Abstract:Green solvent is a topic of increasing attention in modern chemistry because of the consciousness of the effect of solvents on air quality, energy usage, pollution, and continuous climate change. Over the past few years, remarkable progress has been made to accomplish these goals by giving interest in sustainable synthesis. For sustainable development, continuous efforts have been put forward for addressing these issues and the chemical approaches are now analysed for the usage of solvents. Realizing solvent property is a crucial area of green chemistry, and therefore the solvents were categorized by their handling techniques, ecological, and healthiness (ESH) features. The focus of this ranking is to help the researchers in choosing their reaction solvent efficiently, keeping in mind the ESH values of the solvents and discouraging them from using environmentally harmful and toxic solvents which are commonly used in laboratories. In this review article, we are trying to consider various synthetic methodologies of the most protuberant sustainable solvents such as polyethylene glycol, supercritical CO2, and water. We herein examine not only the chemical reactions but also represent the mechanism and synthetic utility of each class of solvent inside the background of the reactions for which it is used, but also documented the widespread substrate scope of the reaction. A broad range of economic and environmental factors are also demonstrated, giving a wider display of the current status of sustainable solvent research and development.

Abstract:Selecting greener solvents during experiment design is imperative for greener chemistry. While many solvent selection guides are currently used in the pharmaceutical industry, these are often paper-based guides which can make it difficult to identify and compare specific solvents. This work presents a stand-alone version of the solvent flashcards that were developed as part of the AI4Green electronic laboratory notebook. The functionality is an intuitive and interactive interface for the visualisation of data from CHEM21, a pharmaceutical solvent selection guide that categorises solvents according to "greenness". This open-source software is written in Python, JavaScript, HTML and CSS and allows users to directly contrast and compare specific solvents by generating colour-coded flashcards. It can be installed locally using pip, or alternatively the source code is available on GitHub: https://github.com/AI4Green/solvent_flashcards. Abstract:Research into the synthesis and application of green solvents is a developing field of interest relevant to a variety of chemical manufacturers. Tunable solvents utilising carbon dioxide lend themselves to a reduction in work-up solvent and can help avoid the need for energy intensive solvent recovery options such as distillation. This perspective examines the potential beneflts of tunable solvents to the chemical manufacturing industry and the environment. Freed from the usual reliance on distillation, high boiling solvents with an inherently lessened potential to cause air emissions can be used as part of a tunable solvent system. Abstract:Abstract Solvents are important in most industrial and domestic applications. The impact of solvent losses and emissions drives efforts to minimise them or to avoid them completely. Since the 1990s, this has become a major focus of green chemistry, giving rise to the idea of the ‘green’ solvent. This concept has generated a substantial chemical literature and has led to the development of so-called neoteric solvents. A critical overview of published material establishes that few new materials have yet found widespread use as solvents. The search for less-impacting solvents is inefficient if carried out without due regard, even at the research stage, to the particular circumstances under which solvents are to be used on the industrial scale. Wider sustainability questions, particularly the use of non-fossil sources of organic carbon in solvent manufacture, are more important than intrinsic ‘greenness’. While solvency is universal, a universal solvent, an alkahest, is an unattainable ideal.

Abstract:In recent years, almost all extraction processes in the perfume, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food ingredients, nutraceuticals, biofuel and fine chemical industries rely massively on solvents, the majority of which have petroleum origins. The intricate processing steps involved in the industrial extraction cycle makes it increasingly difficult to predict the overall environmental impact; despite the tremendous energy consumption and the substantial usage of solvents, often the yields are indicated in decimals. The ideal alternative solvents suitable for green extraction should have high solvency, high flash points with low toxicity and low environmental impacts, be easily biodegradable, obtained from renewable (non-petrochemical) resources at a reasonable price and should be easy to recycle without any deleterious effect to the environment. Finding the perfect solvent that meets all the aforementioned requirements is a challenging task, thus the decision for the optimum solvent will always be a compromise depending on the process, the plant and the target molecules. The objective of this comprehensive review is to furnish a vivid picture of current knowledge on alternative, green solvents used in laboratories and industries alike for the extraction of natural products focusing on original methods, innovation, protocols, and development of safe products.

Abstract:The chemical industry makes extensive use of solvents, especially for chemical reactions and separations. When considering the large number of existing solvents and the necessity for finding new and alternative ones, systematic methods for the optimal selection and molecular design of solvents become significant for efficient and sustainable chemical manufacturing. During the past decade, a substantial number of contributions have been made in this area. This article summarizes property models for predicting solvent effects and introduces theoretical methods for solvent selection and design. Recent developments in computer-aided solvent selection/design for four selected application areas including reaction rate acceleration, carbon capture, extractive desulfurization, and homogeneous catalyst recovery are briefly reviewed. To conclude, several remaining challenges and possible future directions are discussed.

Abstract:The solvent-free and catalyst-free (SFCF) reaction has garnered significant interest among chemists due to its alignment with many of the 12 principles of green chemistry. In recent years, numerous innovative techniques have been employed to expand the scope of SFCF reactions and diversify the range of substrates. This paper presents an exhaustive examination of these transformations involving various functional groups, including alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, ketones, imines, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, amides, amines, epoxides, aziridines, and organoselenides. Our review primarily seeks to elucidate the impact of solvent and concentration effects on these reactions by applying novel theories, such as the aggregate effect, multi-body effect, and multiple weak interactions, to ascertain how solvents impede these reactions. Additionally, different reaction mechanisms are contrasted under catalytic versus non-catalytic as well as solvent versus non-solvent conditions. Furthermore, the applications of such environmentally friendly reactions in fields such as material synthesis and drug synthesis are emphasized.

Abstract:In recent years, green solvents have emerged as promising alternatives in the field of analytical chemistry, replacing conventional organic solvents known for their toxicity, volatility, and flammability. The combination of these solvents with liquid-liquid microextraction techniques has facilitated the development of simpler, faster, more economical, and environment-friendly methodologies for the analysis of samples of varying complexity. This review discusses the fundamental physicochemical properties and advantages of using deep eutectic solvents, ionic liquids, switchable-hydrophilicity solvents, supramolecular solvents, and surfactants as extractants. Furthermore, analytical methods based on liquid-liquid microextraction techniques developed in the last 5 years for the determination of organic compounds and metals in biological and environmental samples are presented and discussed, highlighting their applications and benefits to improve analytical performance and sustainability.

Abstract:Emulsifiable concentrates are a common form of agrochemical formulation in which a high quantity of active ingredient is typically dissolved in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. There are considerable health and environmental hazards associated with the solvents in emulsifiable concentrates, and finding alternatives was deemed worthy of investigation. Using a combination of in silico modeling and experimental testing, a number of alternative safer solvents have been tested for the agrochemicals pendimethalin, prochloraz, and pyraclostrobin. Cyclohexanone, diethyl carbonate, ethyl acetate, and dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) were observed to be effective solvents.

Abstract:The increasing awareness of environmental issues and the transition to green analytical chemistry (GAC) have gained popularity among academia and industry in recent years. One of the principles of GAC is the reduction and replacement of toxic solvents with more sustainable and environmentally friendly ones. This review gives an overview of the advances in applying green solvents as an alternative to the traditional organic solvents for peptide and protein purification and analysis by liquid chromatography (LC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) methods. The feasibility of using greener LC and CE methods is demonstrated through several application examples; however, there is still plenty of room for new developments to fully realize their potential and to address existing challenges. Thanks to the tunable properties of designer solvents, such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents, and almost infinite possible mixtures of components for their production, it is possible that some new designer solvents could potentially surpass the traditional harmful solvents in the future. Therefore, future research should focus mainly on developing new solvent combinations and enhancing analytical instruments to be able to effectively work with green solvents.

Abstract:Green extraction techniques (GreETs) emerged in the last decade as greener and sustainable alternatives to classical sample preparation procedures aiming to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of analytical methods, simultaneously reducing the deleterious side effects of classical extraction techniques (CETs) for both the operator and the environment. The implementation of improved processes that overcome the main constraints of classical methods in terms of efficiency and ability to minimize or eliminate the use and generation of harmful substances will promote more efficient use of energy and resources in close association with the principles supporting the concept of green chemistry. The current review aims to update the state of the art of some cutting-edge GreETs developed and implemented in recent years focusing on the improvement of the main analytical features, practical aspects, and relevant applications in the biological, food, and environmental fields. Abstract:An overview of solvent replacement strategies shows that there is great progress in green chemistry for replacing hazardous di-polar aprotic solvents, such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), and 1,4-dioxane (DI), used in processing active industrial ingredients (APIs). In synthetic chemistry, alcohols, carbonates, ethers, eucalyptol, glycols, furans, ketones, cycloalkanones, lactones, pyrrolidinone or solvent mixtures, 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran in methanol, HCl in cyclopentyl methyl ether, or trifluoroacetic acid in propylene carbonate or surfactant water (no organic solvents) are suggested replacement solvents. For the replacement of dichloromethane (DCM) used in chromatography, ethyl acetate ethanol or 2-propanol in heptanes, with or without acetic acid or ammonium hydroxide additives, are suggested, along with methanol acetic acid in ethyl acetate or methyl tert-butyl ether, ethyl acetate in ethanol in cyclohexane, CO2-ethyl acetate, CO2-methanol, CO2-acetone, and CO2-isopropanol. Supercritical CO2 (scCO2) can be used to replace many organic solvents used in processing materials from natural sources. Vegetable, drupe, legume, and seed oils used as co-extractants (mixed with substrate before extraction) can be used to replace the typical organic co-solvents (ethanol, acetone) used in scCO2 extraction. Mixed solvents consisting of a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) solvent and a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) are not addressed in GSK or CHEM21 solvent replacement guides. Published data for 100 water-soluble and water-insoluble APIs in mono-solvents show polarity ranges appropriate for the processing of APIs with mixed solvents. When water is used, possible HBA candidate solvents are acetone, acetic acid, acetonitrile, ethanol, methanol, 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran, 2,2,5,5-tetramethyloxolane, dimethylisosorbide, Cyrene, Cygnet 0.0, or diformylxylose. When alcohol is used, possible HBA candidates are cyclopentanone, esters, lactone, eucalytol, MeSesamol, or diformylxylose. HBA—HBA mixed solvents, such as Cyrene—Cygnet 0.0, could provide interesting new combinations. Solubility parameters, Reichardt polarity, Kamlet—Taft parameters, and linear solvation energy relationships provide practical ways for identifying mixed solvents applicable to API systems.

Abstract:Greenness of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents is revisited.Strategies to avoid the disadvantages of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are proposed.This review provides useful guide for the design and application of novel green solvents.Green solvents are one of the hot topics of green chemistry. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are deemed as green solvents to a certain extent, and they have been applied in many areas, such as dissolution, separation, catalysis, electrochemistry and material synthesis. However, the greenness of ILs and DESs should be revisited because more and more evidences have shown that they are not always green. In this perspective, besides the reported merits, the disadvantages and problems of some ILs and DESs, such as instability, volatility, hygroscopicity, toxicity, flammability, regenerability, cost, energy consumption and impurities are discussed. Moreover, 13 strategies to avoid the disadvantages of ILs and DESs and to increase the greenness are proposed. Comparison of the greenness of ILs and DESs is further conducted. This perspective provides some new viewpoints on the greenness of ILs and DESs.Greenness of ionic liquids vs deep eutectic solvents is revisited.

Abstract:The quest for sustainable and environmentally friendly fuel feedstocks has led to the exploration of green solvents for the extraction of bio-oil from various biomass sources. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and future research outlooks for different categories of green extraction solvents, including bio-based solvents, water-based solvents, supercritical fluids, and deep eutectic solvents (DES). The background of each solvent category is discussed, highlighting their potential advantages and limitations. Challenges such as biomass feedstock sourcing, cost fluctuations, solvent properties variability, limited compatibility, solute solubility, high costs, and potential toxicity are identified and examined in detail. To overcome these challenges, future research should focus on alternative and abundant feedstock sources, the development of improved solubility and separation techniques, optimization of process parameters, cost-effective equipment design, standardization of DES compositions, and comprehensive toxicological studies. By addressing these challenges and advancing research in these areas, the potential of green extraction solvents can be further enhanced, promoting their widespread adoption and contributing to more sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial processes.

Abstract:Many traditional solvents have drawbacks including sustainability and toxicity issues. Legislation, such as REACH, is driving the move towards less hazardous chemicals and production processes. Therefore, safer bio-based solvents need to be developed. Herein, a 10 step method has been proposed for the development of new bio-based solvents, which utilises a combination of in silico modelling of Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs), experimental Kamlet-Abboud-Taft parameters, a selection of green synthetic routes followed by application testing and toxicity measurements. The challenges that the chemical industry face in the development of new bio-based solvents are highlighted through a case study on methyl(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl carbonate (MMC), which can be synthesised from glycerol. Although MMC is an attractive candidate as a replacement solvent, simply being bio-derived is not enough for a molecule to be regarded as green. The methodology of solvent development described here is a broadly applicable protocol that will indicate if a new bio-based solvent is functionally proficient, and will also highlight the importance of early stage Kamlet-Abboud-Taft parameters determination and toxicity testing in the development of a green solvent.

Abstract:Water pollution and depletion of natural resources have motivated the utilization of green organic solvents in solvent extraction (SX) and liquid membrane (LM) for sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery. SX is an old and established separation method, while LM, which combines both the solute removal and recovery processes of SX in a single unit, is a revolutionary separation technology. The organic solvents used for solute removal in SX and LM can be categorized into sole conventional, mixed conventional-green, and sole green organic solvents, whereas the stripping agents used for solute recovery include acids, bases, metal salts, and water. This review revealed that the performance of greener organic solvents (mixed conventional-green and sole green organic solvents) was on par with the sole conventional organic solvents. However, some green organic solvents may threaten food security, while others could be pricey. The distinctive extraction theories of various sole green organic solvents (free fatty acid-rich oils, triglyceride-rich oils, and deep eutectic solvents) affect their application suitability for a specific type of wastewater. Organic liquid wastes are among the optimal green organic solvents for SX and LM in consideration of their triple environmental, economic, and performance benefits.

Abstract:During the last decades, many efforts have been devoted to the adaptation of sample preparation techniques and methods to the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry. Among them, this article review focusses on those aimed to green the solvents involved in sample treatment. Research in this field started in the late 1990s with the synthesis of room temperature ionic liquids , which were later replaced by the deep eutectic solvents (DESs). During the last years, a subclass of DESs, the so-called hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) have attracted attention. HDESs have contributed to circumventing some of the limitations of early-synthesised hydrophilic DESs regarding the cost of raw materials, the simplicity of synthesis, and the biocompatibility and, apparently, the biodegradability of the mixtures. In addition, these mixtures allowed the treatment of aqueous samples and the extraction of non-polar analytes. This article discusses fundamental aspects regarding the nomenclature used concerning HDESs, summarises the main physicochemical properties of these mixtures, and through discussion of key application studies, describes current progress in the use of these green solvents for the extraction of trace organic contaminants from a variety of matrices. Remaining gaps and possible lines of future development in this emerging, active and attractive research area are also identified and critically discussed.

Abstract:The use of environmentally friendly technologies to obtain a wide range of products from renewable resources is a topic at the forefront of innovation for a novel circular economy. To keep up with developments in society, researchers have been studying modern technologies that use green solvents for processing raw materials. The products obtained by processes such as extraction, absorption, and chemical reactions using potential solvents can be of high quality while minimizing waste production.Therefore, this chapter presents a brief motivation to study green solvents like ionic liquids, switchable solvents, supercritical carbon dioxide, and subcritical and supercritical water in chemical-related areas. This chapter includes fundamentals and recent studies about green processes that use such solvents. Initially, a motivation is presented on green solvents used in industrial processes in order to substitute toxic solvents. Afterward, the fundamentals, properties, and possible utilization of such solvents in several areas are presented. The main properties of switchable solvents, ionic liquids, supercritical carbon dioxide, and sub/supercritical water are highlighted to favor specific applications in a wide range of processes as the extraction of metals and oil, gasification and hydrolysis of a wide type of biomass, carbon capture, and energy storage.
