Abstract:With its capacity to visually demonstrate the interconnectedness of human and other life forms, cinema is perfect for interrogating the set boundaries between humans and animals. This article explores the cinematic representation of the human–animal relationship in two Chinese-language films, Cow and Wolf Totem, and examines the ways in which these two films foreground the animal figures and their interactions with humans to question and destabilize the conventional human–animal divide. Reading Cow through the Deleuzian lens of becoming, Yanhong Zhu argues that this film seeks to reposition humans and animals in “the zone of proximity,” where boundaries can be blurred or dissolved. Zhu further argues that through the shift from “becoming-animal” in the original novel to the animal’s Umwelt (environment) in the film adaptation, Wolf Totem reveals how cinema can possibly grant agency to animals and challenge the anthropocentric human–animal distinction.

With the rapid development of science and technology, creation orientations of AI films have also changed. The reason is that the art world is a reflection of the real world, and is also viewed and reconstructed by the real world. Perceptions and concepts of the real world will have an indirect impact on the foundation of the art world, and artistic ideas can in turn become the trigger and starting point for real world developments. Light Chaser Animation, as one of the most important forces in Chinese film production, has been exploring new possibilities for animation films, inheriting and innovating traditional Chinese cultural elements, and has produced the famous "New Gods" series of films, which combines oriental elements and cultural characteristics, blends modernity and tradition, and forms an Oriental Punk style with Chinese characteristics. Oriental Punk not only shows the construction of modernity of Chinese traditional culture, but also the embodiment of cultural self-confidence, and at the same time presents the unique style and aesthetic value of Chinese culture to the world. This article analyzes the visual symbols, color design and action vocabulary of the film New Gods: Yang Jian, and points out a new direction for Chinese films to integrate traditional cultural elements and modern art technology in the creation of new mythological themes.

Abstract:In recent years, with the development of popular culture and digital technology, there has been a new trend of fusion between online games and film art. In movies themed on popular games, some NPC images have developed self-awareness with the operation of artificial intelligence systems, they own the information body and the self-generating system, regarding human player as the mirror to self-identify and become a channel between the virtual and real worlds. These images play an important role in the narration, some of them resist system instructions in the climax of the story, not only break the original rules of the game, but also evolve new life forms, and challenge the authority of the traditional human-machine boundary for the acquisition of emotion, memory and thinking. The film's vivid interpretation of the NPC autogenesis process enriches the characters and expands the meaning of the theme, at the same time, it allows us to reflect on the contradictions and conflicts between humans, machines and other species from the perspective of virtual life, provides some inspiring opinions on how to meet the unknown posthuman future.

Abstract:Abstract Wuershan is a well-known Chinese film director, screenwriter, and producer, who is known for his directorial blockbusters The Butcher, the Chef, and the Swordman (Daojianxiao, 2011); Painted Skin: The Resurrection (HuapiII, 2012); Mojin: The Lost Legend (Guichuideng Zhi Xunlongjue, 2015); and Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (Feng shen: zhao ge feng yun, 2023). This interview was conducted between Wuershan and Xuguang Chen on October 12th, 2023 in Wuershan’s Director Studio, Beijing. In this in-depth interview, they focused on the experience of the Chinese film industry and the aesthetics of Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms . First, they discussed industrialized operations of filmmaking in terms of film creativity, screenwriting, production, and casting. Second, they emphasized the classical aesthetic elements involved in the movie, including selection criteria and their creative transformation, and the inheritance and innovation of traditional values. They also analyzed the characters and stories of the movie in the third part, which are derived from Chinese historical texts, and rewritten to meet the requirements of both a mythological movie framework and the contemporary times. And then they explored the role of technology in cinema, the place of authorship within the system, and the consumption of imaginative films. In the end, they discussed the issue of cross-media operations and the international communication of Chinese films.

Abstract:Abstract This paper analyzes the 2016 Chinese animation film Big Fish & Begonia and its precursor, a 2004 Flash animated short video, in conjunction with Zhuangzi’s philosophy of becoming and transformation. It traces the origin of the film in the auteur’s dream experience and the development of cinematic language and animation technology from the initial short video to the full-feature film. Adopting a form closely associated with the fantastical and speculative traditions of Chinese mythology, Big Fish & Begonia represents animal becomings through the apparatus of the dream, as both crucial content and form, and the formal characteristics of animation. Both the dream and the animation forms allow the expression of desires to break through the ontological and epistemological constraints of the human subject and to render the physical form unstable. By engaging with key passages from Zhuangzi that discuss dreams, knowledge, “free and easy wandering,” and “becoming/transformation,” the paper asserts Zhuangzi’s continued influence in contemporary Chinese animation. The film offers new ways of conceptualizing and addressing modern environmental crises while aligning itself with the cultural–political agenda to create “authentic” Chinese stories.

Abstract:The dual attributes of artificial intelligence AlphaGd production, combined with modern social culture, industrial economy, and other factors, show rich connotation and extension in the development process of film and television animation production from the perspective of artificial intelligence AlphaGd. This paper first discusses and analyzes the practical significance and points out that AI AlphaGd has powerful functions, can greatly improve the sense of animation, and can effectively promote the technological innovation of animation production, then introduces the role modeling ideas of AI AlphaGd, and describes the modeling steps. Finally, the application of AI AlphaGd works produced after the use of artificial intelligence AlphaGd is more lifelike and specific in both the embodiment of the character image and the basic picture effect, which can make the audience have a more comfortable and perfect viewing experience. After summarizing, this paper puts forward the shortcomings of perspective artificial intelligence AlphaGd. Abstract:In the process of the development of Chinese animations, mythical themes have provided a variety of practical materials for the creation of animated films. The recent domestic movies such as Monkey King: Hero is Back (2015) and Ne Zha : I am the Destiny (2019) are cases in point, achieving great progress in both quality and box office in the film industry. It can be seen that Chinese mythology and the creation of animated films are closely related; while the previous animation works might focus on the educational significance in design characters, films were productive while they lack of fun or suspense at some point. In addition, the development of Chinese animation in previous years has also been impacted by American and Japanese animations, an academic worry is that, would the Chinese mythological themes in the process of adaptation be slightly lost? Then, how to understand the connection between Chinese myths and the creation of animations becomes a key subject for writing the paper. In other words, this paper will use content analyses to claim that creation of animation films is to inherit cultural elements of Chinese mythology. Such inheritance not only highlight s the national spirit, but also advocate s cultural communication, allowing audience to understand the essence of Chinese culture.

Abstract:Movies permeate every aspect of people's life. Movies are typically viewed as a kind of entertainment or an escape from reality. However, certain films include hidden messages. This study examines the animal symbolism in the movie Zootopia. The film exemplifies how the animal characters are symbolically utilized throughout the film and how it reflects on contemporary situations. Animal qualities described in the movie Zootopia indicate a cultural custom already accepted by civilization. After comparing how the animals in the movie are portrayed to how they are depicted in real life through the culture used by the movie, the authors see that the animals in the movies are portrayed similarly to how they are portrayed in the culture of the United States. Abstract:Visual signs can be differentiated into denotative and connotative messages, where denotative messages form the perceptual foundation of an image, and connotative messages engage with a deeper, culturally cognisant layer, imbued with subjective interpretations and aesthetic significations. This study embarks on a qualitative textual analysis with the main aim to elucidate the connotation and denotation of visual significations in two pivotal Chinese animated films, Monkey King: Hero is Back and Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child. Guided by Roland Barthes’ Semiotic theory and Chen’s study, the research delves into the connotative and denotative meanings embodied in the films’ visual elements. The focus is primarily on facial design, physical appearance, clothing, and props, providing a comparative analysis of how these elements function within each film’s narrative framework. The key findings reveal that the visual significations in both films are not merely aesthetic choices but serve as substantial cultural and narrative tools. The characters’ faces, physical appearances, clothing, and props are intricately tied to themes like Chinese opera masks, subversive reconstructions, natural elements, and intangible cultural heritage. These visual cues play a crucial role in reinforcing cultural heritage, spurring innovation, invoking nature reverence, and bolstering national sentiment within film storytelling. Contrasting with previous research that predominantly focused on characters, this study expands the analytical scope to include props, recognising their significance as visual signs in animation. By expanding the analysis to include props alongside characters and visual elements into the analysis, this research offers a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Chinese mythological animations. It enriches the academic discourse on animation studies, demonstrating how visual elements can profoundly influence narrative interpretation and cultural representation. The research affirms the cultural and narrative potency of visual signification in animation and underscores the dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation within the realm of Chinese animated films.

Abstract:Robot animals are important for the interpretation of the biological world. In this paper, I show that specific design solutions for robot animal signs usually privilege the overall perception of biological systems (and animal signs in general) as machinic entities, which ignores the role of identity self-generation and sustainability, the hallmark of biological signs. Animal signs are semiotic systems that operate roughly on three subsystems: affordance mapping (related with niche construction and embeddedness), essence categorization, displaying co-enabling relations within the animal system, and sensorimotor autonomy. Of these interrelated systems, the first two are commonly associated with robot animal design and conceptualization, whereas the third one suffers from the unsolved AI design problem of engineering true context-dependent sensitivity. As a result, a semiotic blindness toward biological organisms has derived in dissociated perceptions of robot animals as objects that emulate their biological counterparts through both biomorphic affordance design (biomorphism) and bioinspired task completion. Robot signs are thus confined to the realm of techno myths populating experimental settings narratives, which contributes to a diminishing awareness of biological diversity and animal uniqueness for the construction and preservation of the Umwelt.

Abstract:In the context of the ongoing development of multimedia convergence, cross-media storytelling has become an indispensable part of the film and television industry. Many film IPs have adopted the production mode of cross-media narrative, which not only significantly enhances their popularity but also greatly strengthens audience participation and loyalty. Disney's animated film Zootopia combines film IP with theme parks, spin-offs, games and other media. The IP has successfully expanded its story world through collaborative narrative across multiple media, providing a richer and more diverse story experience for the audience. Therefore, based on the concept of transmedia narrative, this paper focuses on analyzing the film IP of Crazy Animal City and its characteristics and analyses the strategy of transmedia narrative expansion of this IP in terms of content, audience, and science and technology, intending to explore the practical significance of the transmedia narrative of the film IP. This analysis contributes to understanding the use of transmedia narratives in today's film and television industry. It emphasizes the importance of exploring new narrative approaches and media integration strategies. In addition, it provides valuable insights and references for future film intellectual property.

Abstract:“ Big Fish & Begonia” is a Chinese fantasy animated film directed by Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun, which took 12 years to complete. It has been well received at home and abroad. This paper analyzes the film from six aspects: ancient culture, ancient charm, ancient modeling, new concept, new fashion and new design. It is found that the film has made breakthroughs and innovations in technology, creativity, theme, and animation skills and catered to audience of all ages, but there are also some shortcomings such as poor rhythm and weak narrative. It is suggested to strengthen the connection between Chinese elements and stories, and to create enough emotion and plots before the climax. The research may shed some light on the development of Chinese animated films.

Abstract:In the era of globalization and rapidly developing technology, China’s animation industry in its development faces a certain anxiety about the preservation of traditional national identity. This article describes the influence of neorealism on contemporary Chinese animation art. The study is an attempt to explore and analyze the fea-tures of neorealism as a current in contemporary Chinese animation through the example of the animated film “Lion Boy”. The appearance of the film (2021) has broken the dominant pattern of contemporary Chinese ani-mated films with “mythological” themes and marked a new direction for the development of contemporary Chi-nese animation. The movie is based on a classical plot, but the characters are adapted to the norms of modern morality and ideas about aesthetics. From a certain angle, the movie is filled with modern pictures, the images of the characters are better depicted, they are more real, and the plot develops more dynamically. The protago-nist is a character with a peculiar morality, who does not believe in prejudice. He meets the main values of mo-dernity, which attracts the viewer. By analyzing the storyline, metaphors and analogies of the film, the author made an attempt to identify the problems of the development of Chinese animation and determine the features brought by neorealism to contemporary Chinese animation cinema. Neorealism filled animation with the con-sideration of the true relationship between ordinary people and society as a whole system, shifting the empha-sis from mythological heroes, leaders to ordinary people. One of the results of the content analysis has become the characterization of a new direction of Chinese animation art in which human dreams and reality can coex-ist. The new animation resolves the contradiction between ideal and reality, the conflict between modern and traditional culture. Conclusions dwells upon the fact that it is possible to bridge the gap and conflict between “tradition” and “modernity”, “individual” and “society” that modern people face in their life world.
