Contribution of Vocabulary Knowledge,Morphological Awareness and Lexical Inferencing Ability to Reading Comprehension:Evidence from SEM

Abstract:Within the SEM framework,this study tests the relationship between vocabulary knowledge,morphological awareness,lexical inferencing ability and reading comprehension among Thai Chinese learners.The results show:1)vocabulary knowledge and lexical inferencing ability contribute significantly to Chinese reading comprehension,but morphological awareness does not;2)morphological awareness shows indirect effects on reading comprehension through the mediation of vocabulary knowledge and lexical inferencing ability,and its indirect effects outweigh its direct effects;3)lexical inferencing ability has both direct effects and indirect effects through the mediation of vocabulary knowledge on reading comprehension,with direct effects being more marked than indirect effects.Then follows a discussion of the results and relative pedagogical implications.
