Abstract:The morphology, infraciliature and silverline system of 7 marine scuticociliates including one new species: Paranophrys magna Borror, 1972; Mesanophrys carcini (Groliere & Leglise, 1977); Paralembus digitiformis Kahl, 1931, Miamiensis avidus Thompson & Moewus, 1964, Parauronema longum Song, 1995, Parauronema virginianum Thompson, 1967 and Metanophrys sinensis nov. spec. have been observed from life and investigated using protargol and Chatton-Lwoff impregnation methods. Separation and identification about some closely related philaterids, Paranophrys, Metanophrys, Mesanophrys, Miamiensis and Parauronema, are discussed based on our studies. Improved diagnosis for the genera Paranophrys, Miamiensis is suggested. For Paranophrys: small to middle sized Uronematids with pointed anterior end; well developed membranelle 1 and 2, of which the M-1 consists of two or more longitudinal rows of basal bodies and is about the same length as M-2; paroral membrane extending anteriorly to the anterior end of M-2, single caudal cilium present. The genus Miamiensis differs from the Paranophrys in having a dimorphic paroral membrane, of which the anterior part consists of monokinetids and may be slightly separated form the posterior part. Metanophrys and Mesanophrys are characterized by their paroral membrane: the PM in the former extends anteriorly to about half way of the membranelle 2, while in the latter it stretches only to the posterior end of membranelle 2. Parauronema can be identified from all genera mentioned above by presence of a flattened, though sometimes inconspicuous, apical plate. According to our redefinition for Paranophrys, the genus Anophryoides De Puytorac & Groliere, 1979 will be considered as a junior synonym of the former. We regard the following 14 forms as misidentifications or junior synonyms: Parauronema antarcticum Petz, Song & Wilbert, 1995 (= Parauronema longum Song, 1995); Uronema acutum Borror, 1963/ 1965/ 1968, Potomacus pottsi Small & Lynn, 1985 and Parauronema acutum Small & Lynn, 1985, Uronema acutum Dragesco & Dragesco-Kerneis, 1986 (= Parauronema virginianum Thompson, 1967); Paranophrys carnivora Czapik & Wilbert, 1986, Anophryoides salmacida De Puytorac & Groliere, 1979, Anophryoides puytoraci Small & Lynn, 1985 and (?) Anophryoides soldoi Small & Lynn, 1985 (= populations of Paranophrys magna Borror, 1972); Miamiensis blitzae Small & Lynn, 1985 and (?) Philasterides dicentrarchi Dragesco et al., 1995 (= Miamiensis avidus Thompson & Moewus, 1964), Uronema acutum Petz et al., 1995 (= Metanophrys sinensis nov, spec.); Mesanophrys pugettensis Morado & Small, 1994 and Mesanophrys maggii Small & Lynn, 1985 (= Mesanophrys carcini Groliere & Leglise, 1977).
