Abstract:In the past few decades, microbubble flotation has been widely studied in the separation and beneficiation of fine minerals. Compared with conventional flotation, microbubble flotation has obvious advantages, such as high grade and recovery and low consumption of flotation reagents. This work systematically reviews the latest advances and research progress in the flotation of fine mineral particles by microbubbles. In general, microbubbles have small bubble size, large specific surface area, high surface energy, and good selectivity and can also easily be attached to the surface of hydrophobic particles or large bubbles, greatly reducing the detaching probability of particles from bubbles. Microbubbles can be prepared by pressurized aeration and dissolved air, electrolysis, ultrasonic cavitation, photocatalysis, solvent exchange, temperature difference method (TDM), and Venturi tube and membrane method. Correspondingly, equipment for fine-particle flotation is categorized as microbubble release flotation machine, centrifugal flotation column, packed flotation column, and magnetic flotation machine. In practice, microbubble flotation has been widely studied in the beneficiation of ultrafine coals, metallic minerals, and nonmetallic minerals and exhibited superiority over conventional flotation machines. Mechanisms underpinning the promotion of fine-particle flotation by nanobubbles include the agglomeration of fine particles, high stability of nanobubbles in aqueous solutions, and enhancement of particle hydrophobicity and flotation dynamics.

Abstract:The removal of particles is of great importance in many fields including effluent treatment, mineral separation, clean metal production, etc. However, most of the researchers paid their attention to the two-phase flow involving gas–liquid or solid–liquid independently. The motion and interaction between bubbles and particles in the swirling three-phase flow field were simulated by discrete phase model. The swirling flow and the collision between bubbles and particles were governed by compiling the user-defined function program. The centripetal pressure gradient force pushes the discrete phases toward the central region, where the collision rate between particle and bubbles is improved greatly. Moreover, it proved beneficially for particle removal to increase the swirling velocity, particularly for larger particles. Thus, bubble flotation is an effective method to remove particles from the fluid. The swirling velocity was optimized, which is valuable for industrial design.

Determination and modulation of the typical interactions among dispersed phases relevant to flotation applications: A review

Abstract:Flotation is a process involving multi-components, multi-scales, and gas-liquid-solid three phases, where the material separation is achieved based on the difference in surface hydrophobicity of various constituents. In a flotation system, fluids are usually regarded as the continuous phase, while the dispersed phases refer to scattered particles, bubbles, and droplets with low solubility as a dispersion that is surrounded by the aqueous environment. Fundamentally, the interactions among dispersed phases exist throughout the flotation process, and play distinct roles during different periods. For example, the liquid collector-solid, solid-solid, bubble-bubble and gas bubble-solid interactions are closely associated with the particle surface modification, particle behavior, bubble size evolution and separation in flotation, respectively. Therefore, the influences of each stage are all worthy of concern, and should be spared sufficient attention, which requires to formulate a horizontal writing structure. In this review, instead of summarizing all available characterization techniques or measurements, certain typical examples or methods were consciously chosen to perform analysis or comparison, aiming to summarize recent studies on the determination and modulation of dispersed phase interactions. The determination on the interactions among dispersed phases is helpful for fundamentally understanding the microcosmic process connotations, and their modulation contributes to firmly providing macroscopic optimization schemes for practical applications. By integrating some typically available theoretical calculations and experimental measurements related to the dispersed phase interactions, the present article is devoted to revealing the influential factors, finding out the current challenges or knowledge gaps, and affording certain references or suggestions for future investigations.
Effect of frother on dynamic detachment of rising bubble-coarse particle aggregates at gas-liquid interface

Abstract:In the flotation process, the bubble-coarse particle aggregates easily undergo detachment at the gas-liquid interface, resulting in low mineral recovery. This paper tested the variation rule of surface tension with a concentration in the solution of four alcohols frother, namely, n-pentanol (NPA), methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 2-octanol, and polypropylene glycol (PPG). The effects of frothers on the motion characteristics of rising bubble-coarse particle aggregates and the dynamic detachment of aggregates at the gas-liquid interface were investigated separately using a high-speed dynamic camera system and a dynamic detachment device. The results showed that the solution surface tension decreased and then tended to be stabilized with the increase of frother concentration. Under the same concentration, the stronger the surface activity of the frother, the smaller the rising velocity of the bubble-coarse particle aggregates, and the more stable the motion state of the aggregates, with a smaller velocity fluctuation. The lower rising velocity reduced the particle detachment probability when aggregates collided with the gas-liquid interface. The merger time of the bubble-coarse particle aggregates was extended with the improved surface activity of the frother, increasing by more than 1 s compared to the solution without the frother. The study will contribute to effectively reduce the dynamic detachment probability of bubbles-coarse particle aggregates at the gas-liquid interface by selecting the type and concentration of frothers, meanwhile optimizing the reagent regime to enhance the coarse particle flotation recovery in the practical production process.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, there has been a rapid growth in the research and extraordinary applications of micro and nanobubbles due to their unique physicochemical properties beyond conventional bubbles including large specific surface area, slow rising velocity, high interface potential, high mass transfer efficiency, and so on. Although there were considerable excellent results and findings reported, a remarkable lag is still recorded concerning the detailed explanation of their formation principle, generating methods and special physicochemical properties. Simultaneously, limited efforts have been made on collecting and preparing a well-organized, comprehensive report of their potential applications in the areas of flotation science and technology. This review is dedicated to a systematic description on their generating principle, fabricating methods, special physicochemical properties and state-of-the-art characterization technologies based on up-to-date research progresses. Subsequently, the main applications of micro and nanobubbles in typical flotation processes with a special emphasis on mineral & secondary resource processing, environment & water treatment, separation & purification for metals were comprehensively reviewed and thoroughly discussed. Ultimately, the challenges and limitations of the current research field including the opportunities for future work of micro and nanobubbles were prospected. Oily-bubble floating-extraction, as the 3th generation foam extraction technology, were also proposed to enhance mass transfer. In summary, this review may be helpful to improve the overall understanding on Micro and Nanobubbles: What They Are and Why They matter.

Effect of Flotation Froth Properties on Froth Rheology

Abstract:Froth flotation is a widely used process of particle separation exploiting differences in surface properties. The froth performance in a flotation cell is expected to be affected by the froth rheology, as it affects the froth residence time that determines the probability of recovery of valuable minerals in the froth phase. Flotation froths have a similar structure to the gas–liquid foams whose rheology has been widely studied. However, to date, very little work has been done in the rheology of flotation froths owing to their instability and the presence of solid particles (on bubble surfaces and in the plateau borders) that are believed to influence froth rheology and complicate any investigation. In this paper, the effects of froth properties on froth rheology were studied by examining the results of 33 flotation tests performed under various conditions that resulted in changes in the froth properties and, consequently, the froth rheology. The experiments were performed in a 20L continuous flotation cell. It was found that the bubble size and the fraction of lamellae covered by solids defined the froth rheology, while the presence of particles in the plateau borders contributed very little to the froth rheology. A model structure was developed by taking into account froth properties to predict froth viscosity.

Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing

Abstract:Froth flotation, as one of the most widely used separation approaches in mineral processing, is commonly used to recover valuable components from minerals. However, maintaining high flotation efficiencies is a serious challenge for conventional froth flotation in the face of decreasing particle size of the minerals to be sorted. To date, there have been plenty of reports on the software of nano-bubbles (NBS) in flotation, and the experimental consequences show that nano-bubbles' introduction has given rise to improvement's different grades in the recovery of varieties of minerals, which highlights the great potential of nano-bubbles for mineral flotation. Nanobubbles have smaller bubble radii and unusually high stability compared to conventional flotation bubbles, and their related behavior in flotation has been a hot research topic. This paper reviews some of the methods of preparing nanobubbles, equipment techniques for characterizing nanobubbles, factors affecting their stability, and some of the popular doctrines. In particular, the reinforcing mechanism of nanobubbles in the particle flotation process is discussed, first, the nanobubbles improve the electrostatic attractiveness with the particles by achieving the charge inversion while the nanobubbles that was adsorbed on the particles' surface will cover a share of the charge, which decreases the electrostatic repulsive force between the particles; and second, the nanobubbles can act as a bridge between the surfaces of the two particles, which advances the agglomeration between the particles. This review aims to be able to further advance the research related to the industrialization of nanobubbles.

Abstract:Variables of hydrodynamics are equally important as those of surface chemistry in determining the efficiency of froth flotation processes. In a mechanical flotation cell, macro hydrodynamics is responsible for solids suspension and aggregates transport, and micro-turbulence plays an important role in the sub-processes of flotation, such as gas dispersion into small bubbles and bubble-particle collision. Generating optimal hydrodynamic regimes will benefit these sub-processes. Despite the growing research attention, flotation hydrodynamics remains a poorly understood field, especially with respect to its effects on fine and ultrafine minerals flotation. In this work, we have reviewed factors influencing flotation hydrodynamics and the characterization of flotation hydrodynamics at different scales. In particular, the effects of hydrodynamics on fine and ultrafine particle flotation processes, including bubble-particle interaction, gas dispersion, flotation kinetics, fine bubble generation, mineral particle size enlargement, and mechanical entrainment have been discussed. Recent thoughts expressed in the literature are introduced, together with recent advances of improving fines flotation by hydrodynamics optimization in cell design using the reactor-separator concept. This review may improve the overall understanding of flotation hydrodynamics and provide guidance for solving the problems in fine and ultrafine minerals flotation from the hydrodynamics perspectives. Research gaps are identified and opportunities for future work are suggested.

Abstract:Flotation process of micro-fine minerals have historically been hampered by slow flotation rate, poor selectivity, high reagent consumption, and low recovery. These disadvantages are mainly due to the large specific surface area attributed to the small-sized mineral particles. As such, research have revolved around enhancing their recovery by process intensification as one of the known effective methods. Micro/nanoparticles, on the other hand, possess many attributes, for instance, strong chemical activity, high reactivity, high surface free energy, and large adsorption capacity, all of which can contribute to improve the separation of micro-fine minerals. The mechanisms and preparation methods of nanoparticle collectors (NPCs) as well as ultrafine bubbles (UFBs) are described in this paper. Furthermore, the influences of NPCs and UFBs on the flotation of micro-fine minerals are also discussed. NPCs and UFBs are capable of providing hydrophobicity selectivity to the desired minerals to improve the flotation performance of mineral particles. This paper offers an overview of the underlying properties of NPCs and UFBs in intensifying flotation applications.

Abstract:The decreasing size of minerals that need to be separated with flotation technique has posed a rigorous challenge to conventional flotation techniques. It's urgent for the researchers working in the field of minerals processing to develop a kind of new, efficient but economic flotation technique. In the past dozens of years, a mass of reports regarding the application of bulk nanobubbles in flotation has been emerging and the positive effect of bulk nanobubbles has been widely verified by the flotation performance of various minerals. The rapid and brilliant progresses made in this field and the huge potential of application in minerals processing motivated the present work. In this work, we reviewed various techniques to produce bulk nanobubbles and the widely used measurement techniques for bulk nanobubbles and analyzed the disadvantages of them. These measurement techniques fail to identify the real identification of nanoentities, which have resulted in debates about the real identification of the observed nanoentities. Then, we reviewed the methods as in detail as possible that were proposed by many researchers to identify the identification of nanoentities, which should help close the relevant debate. Next, considering it that flotation is usually performed in such a liquid environment with complex physical and chemical properties (pH, salt, surfactant, ultrasonication et al.), we reviewed the responses of bulk nanobubbles to external stimuli including the factors described above. Only the bulk nanobubbles keep stable all the time during a flotation process does it make sense to employ bulk nanobubbles for flotation. In the last section, we reviewed the underlying mechanism of how the flotation performance was improved in the presence of bulk nanobubbles. The aim of this review is to provide researchers who are working in the area of mineral processing with rough information about nanobubbles from the field of interface physics and shed some light on developing new techniques for fine particle separation.

Abstract:A novel classification approach termed the flotation classification approach based on controlling interactions between particles was introduced. It differs considerably from the conventional classification processes operating on mechanical forces. During test, the micro-bubble flotation technology was grafted onto hydro-classification. Selective aggregation and dispersion of ultrafine particles have been achieved through governing the interactions in the classification process. A series of laboratory classification tests for - 44 mu m kaolin and - 22 mu m quartz have been conducted on a classification column. As a result, about - 10 mu m classifying product can be obtained from the feeds of kaolin and quartz. In addition, two criteria for the classification were set up. Finally, the theoretical model of flotation classification has been presented based on surface thermodynamics and hydrodynamics.
Comparing the effect of biosurfactant and chemical surfactant on bubble hydrodynamics in a flotation column.

Abstract:Bubble hydrodynamics is fundamental to the performance of the flotation process widely used in the separation industry. To compare the effect of biosurfactants and chemical synthetic surfactants on bubble hydrodynamics in the flotation process, the motion of a single bubble and the size distribution of bubble swarms in various surfactants (rhamnolipid, tea saponin and Triton X-100) solutions were observed directly using a high-speed video camera in a laboratory scale flotation column. Bubble trajectory, dimensions, velocity and size distribution were then determined through image analysis. The results indicated that the addition of biosurfactants had the same significant effects on bubble motion and size distribution as chemosynthetic surfactants. The biosurfactant effect on bubble behavior was also found to depend on their type and concentration. In general, the effect of tea saponin was stronger than another biosurfactant (rhamnolipid) used in the present study. The present findings implied that some biosurfactants like tea saponin can replace chemosynthetic surfactants in controlling bubble behavior in flotation operation. This will contribute to promoting the use of green environmentally friendly flotation agents in the separation industry.
A study of bubble size/shape evolution in microbubble countercurrent contacting flotation column

Abstract:Cationic collectors are widely used in the flotation of iron ore, silicate, oxides, and so forth. At this stage, so much research has been carried out on flotation column cells, but more attention needs to be paid to the hydrodynamic properties in the presence of cationic collectors in cells. In order to study foaming performance and hydrodynamic characteristics in the presence of GE609, the bubble characteristics are studied in an experimental scale flotation column. A high‐speed camera recorder is used to take bubbles' images, and the bubble size and shape under different conditions is measured by image analysis. This paper aims to explore the effect of dispersed gas and continuous liquid velocities on the bubble size and aspect ratio at different axial heights in a countercurrent flotation column in the presence and absence of GE609. In the systems, the bubble size distributions and shapes at different axial positions were obtained by using high‐speed camera technology in the superficial gas velocity (Ug) ranges of 0.0021–0.0106 m/s and superficial liquid velocity (UL) ranges of 0.00123–0.00209 m/s. Through the comparison with relevant papers and studying the experiment data, the relationship between the Sauter mean diameter and Ug, UL and axial heights have been analyzed by using multiple linear regression and dimensional analysis. The experimental data have been adopted to establish the correlation between the bubble diameter and the dimensionless array, which have been compared with other literature. And the predicted values/results of Weber and Morton number correlation in this work are relatively close to the experimental values.

Abstract:Atomizer flotation has the advantages of low cost, low energy consumption, adjustable, and long cycle life in industrial applications. The bubble diameter is an important parameter for floatation. The smaller the bubble diameter, the better the flotation effect. However, the bubble diameter produced by the atomizer during flotation separation is large at present. In this paper, a swirl effervescent atomizer is designed and experimental diagnosis through a spray measurement system and submerged spray visualization system. The diameter and size distribution of bubbles in 5 mm from the atomizer outlet to the jet cross-section spray were discussed. The results showed that the swirl effervescent atomizer obtained a fine Sauter mean diameter (SMD is 13–25 μm) compared with the traditional atomizer. Three flow patterns were observed at the submerged spray system: large bubbly flow, discrete bubbly flow, and slug flow. A statistical method of bubbles under high injection pressure was proposed. The effects of the operating conditions of the effervescent atomizer on the bubble diameter were investigated. The average bubble diameter decreased with the increase in injection pressure and gas–liquid mass flow ratios (GLR). However, with the GLR being increased to 0.15, the influence of injection pressure on bubble diameter was reduced. The backpressures (Liquid level heights) have less effect on bubbles compared with injection pressure and GLR. This paper has great significance for the sustainable development of the atomizer in the flotation separation application.

Abstract:The nature of froth flotation is to selectively hydrophobize valuable minerals by collector adsorption so that the hydrophobized mineral particles can attach air bubbles. In recent years, the increasing commercial production of refractory complex ores has been urgent to develop special collectors for enhancing flotation separation efficiency of valuable minerals from these ores. Molecular design methods offer an effective way for understanding the structure-property relationship of flotation collectors and developing new ones. The conditional stability constant (CSC), molecular mechanics (MM), quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), and first-principle theory, especially density functional theory (DFT), have been adopted to build the criteria for designing flotation collectors. Azole-thiones, guanidines, acyl thioureas and thionocarbamates, amide-hydroxamates, and double minerophilic-group surfactants such as Gemini, dithiourea and dithionocarbamate molecules have been recently developed as high-performance collectors. To design hydrophobic groups, the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance parameters have been extensively used as criteria. The replacement of aryl group with aliphatic group or CC single bond(s) with CC double bond(s), reduction of carbon numbers, introduction of oxygen atom(s) and addition of trisiloxane to the tail terminal have been proved to be useful approaches for adjusting the surface activity of collectors. The role of molecular design of collectors in practical flotation applications was also summarized. Based on the critical review, some comments and prospects for further research on molecular design of flotation collectors were also presented in the paper.
