External auditory canal cholesteatom-Report of 16 cases

Abstract:Objective: investigate the clinical characteristics of external auditory canal cholesteatoma for improve the effect of treatment. Method: Sixteen patients with external auditory canal cholesteatoma were treated from 1988 to 2001 in our department. There were 10 males and 6 females, ranging in age from 15 to 78 years old. CT scaning was using for fefinition the ranging of lesions and the timum management surgery was completed. Results:The lesion ranging in size from a few millimeters to extensive mastoid destruction. The bone distraction was light in 5,heavy bone distraction but no invasive mastoid cavity or tympanic cavity in 6 ,invasion up tympanic cavity in 2,invasion mastoid cavity and formed fistulas between canal and mastoid cavity in 3. All patients were cure for the period of follow-up 5 years. Conclusion: The cholesteatoma of ear canal occurs was infrequently.It is most commonalty see in the elderly. The keratosis obturans and external auditory canal cholesteatoma could be two different clinical and pathologic processes. Smaller lesions can be managed by frequent debridement in the office, larger lesions require a surgical procedure. [Chinese Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg,2003;10(l):6-8
