Abstract:A 77-GHz mixed-mode frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) generator based on a Vernier time-to-digital converter (TDC) is presented. By utilizing a coarse-fine segmented digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the generator supports variable slopes and sawtooth-type FMCW chirp modulation. A dual rising-edge fractional-phase detector is proposed to overcome the issue caused by the rising and falling time mismatch of the delay chain in TDC. A self-calibrated delay chain is employed in the TDC to overcome process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variations. A divider-less frequency error estimator is proposed to save area and power. Sampling-edge-selection is utilized to avoid frequency glitches during the retiming process. An LC voltage-controlled oscillator with split varactors is proposed to improve the linearity tuning range. Implemented in 65nm CMOS, the generator consumes 99 mW power and 0.56 mm 2 chip area. The measurement results show that the generator achieves 0.6 to 10 ms FMCW chirp period (triangle-type), 250 MHz to 4 GHz bandwidth, and less than 251 kHz root-mean-square (RMS) frequency error. And the phase noise from 78.7 GHz carrier is -87.4 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset.
