Abstract:Owing to their exceptional properties, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and high-entropy materials have emerged as promising research areas and shown diverse applications. Here, the recent advances in the field are comprehensively reviewed, organized into five sections. The first section introduces the background of HEAs, covering their definition, significance, application prospects, basic properties, design principles, and microstructure. The subsequent section focuses on cutting-edge high-entropy structural materials, highlighting developments such as nanostructured alloys, grain boundary engineering, eutectic systems, cryogenic alloys, thin films, micro-nano-lattice structures, additive manufacturing, high entropy metallic glasses, nano-precipitate strengthened alloys, composition modulation, alloy fibers, and refractory systems. In the following section, the emphasis shifts to functional materials, exploring HEAs as catalysts, magneto-caloric materials, corrosion-resistant alloys, radiation-resistant alloys, hydrogen storage systems, and materials for biomedicine. Additionally, the review encompasses functional high-entropy materials outside the realm of alloys, including thermoelectric, quantum dots, nanooxide catalysts, energy storage materials, negative thermal expansion ceramics, and high-entropy wave absorption materials. The paper concludes with an outlook, discussing future directions and potential growth areas in the field. Through this comprehensive review, researchers, engineers, and scientists may gain valuable insights into the recent progress and opportunities for further exploration in the exciting domains of high-entropy alloys and functional materials. Abstract:High-entropy materials, especially high-entropy alloys and oxides, have gained significant interest over the years due to their unique structural characteristics and correlated possibilities for tailoring of functional properties. The developments in the area of high-entropy oxides are highlighted here, with emphasis placed on their fundamental understanding, including entropy-dominated phase-stabilization effects and prospective applications, e.g., in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Critical comments on the different classes of high-entropy oxides are made and the underlying principles for the observed properties are summarized. The diversity of materials design, provided by the entropy-mediated phase-stabilization concept, allows engineering of new oxide candidates for practical applications, warranting further studies in this emerging field of materials science.

Abstract:Entropy-related phase stabilization can allow compositionally complex solid solutions of multiple principal elements. The massive mixing approach was originally introduced for metals and has recently been extended to ionic, semiconductor, polymer and low-dimensional materials. Multielement mixing can leverage new types of random, weakly ordered clustering and precipitation states in bulk materials as well as at interfaces and dislocations. The many possible atomic configurations offer opportunities to discover and exploit new functionalities, as well as to create new local symmetry features, ordering phenomena and interstitial configurations. This opens up a huge chemical and structural space in which uncharted phase states, defect chemistries, mechanisms and properties, some previously thought to be mutually exclusive, can be reconciled in one material. Earlier research concentrated on mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, fatigue and ductility. This Review shifts the focus towards multifunctional property profiles, including electronic, electrochemical, mechanical, magnetic, catalytic, hydrogen-related, Invar and caloric characteristics. Disruptive design opportunities lie in combining several of these features, rendering high-entropy materials multifunctional without sacrificing their unique mechanical properties.

Abstract:High-entropy materials (HEMs), including high-entropy alloys (HEAs), high-entropy oxides (HEOs), and other high-entropy compounds, have gained significant interests over the past years. These materials have unique structures with the coexistence of antisite disordering and crystal periodicity, which were originally investigated as structural materials. Recently, they have emerged for energy-related applications, such as catalysis, energy storage, etc. In this work, we review the research progress of energy-related applications of HEMs. After an introduction on the background, theory, and syntheses of HEMs, we survey their applications including electrocatalysis, batteries, and others, aiming to retrieve the correlations between their structures and performances. In the end, we discussed the challenges and future directions for developing HEMs.

Abstract:The availability of well performing and cost efficient energy storage devices is of utmost importance for a smooth transition to sustainable energy. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been successfully commercialized and widely used in various portable devices. Functional materials with higher voltages and greater capacity are needed to further boost the energy density of these batteries. Recently, high-entropy materials (HEMs), with their unique structural characteristics and tunable functional properties, are actively investigated by several research groups [1]. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with superior mechanical properties were first reported about a decade ago. Afterwards, the concept was adapted to high-entropy ceramic (HECs), such as high-entropy oxides, which are promising materials for electrodes as well as electrolytes in LIBs [2-4]. These materials usually contain more than 5 metals in a single disordered phase [5]. HECs are constructed with different type of cations and anions. Their structural and electronic complexity represent a challenge to the computational methods. We discuss the refined Density Functional Theory (DFT)-based methods that are able to successfully describe the electronic structure of these materials. The correct assignment of oxidation states of transition metals is one of the challenges, and we will show importance of correct description of d orbitals for achieving this task. Besides, we will also discuss the cycling performance, as well as thermodynamic aspects of selected HECs [6,7]. Abstract:High-entropy materials (HEMs) hold promise for a variety of applications because their properties can be readily tailored by selecting specific elements and altering stoichiometry. In this Perspective, we highlight the emerging potential of HEMs in energy and electronic applications. We place particular emphasis on (ionic and covalent) ceramics that have only emerged in powder form since 2015. Although the discovery of opportunities is in its early stages, we discuss a few case studies in which the use of HEMs has led to improved material properties and device performance. We also correlate features with the respective properties and identify topics and effects for future investigations. An overview of these intrinsic properties, such as cocktail effects, lattice distortions and compositional freedom, as well as a list of general attributes, is given and linked to changes in material characteristics.

Abstract:This paper reviews a current trend and recent progress in research on phase stability, atomic structures, mechanical and functional properties of high-entropy alloys. The survey is carried out based partly on the special issue published in April, 2020, in Materials Transactions (Vol. 61, No. 4). Research on high-entropy alloys has spread worldwide since the year of 2004, as many of them exhibit attractive properties for structural and functional applications, which have never been achieved in conventional alloys. Significant progress has been made in recent years in our understanding of high-entropy alloys in terms of processing, characterization, modeling and simulation, and so on. Some of them are briefly described in this paper.

Abstract:High-entropy materials (HEMs) are typically crystalline, phase-pure and configurationally disordered materials that contain at least five elements evenly blended into a solid-solution framework. The discovery of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and high-entropy oxides (HEOs) disrupted traditional notions in materials science, providing avenues for the exploration of new materials, property optimization, and the pursuit of advanced applications. While there has been significant research on HEAs, the creative breakthroughs in HEOs are still being revealed. This focus review aims at developing a structured framework for expressing the concept of HEM, with special emphasis on the crystal structure and functional properties of HEOs. Insights into the recent synthetic advances, that foster prospective outcomes and their current applications in electrocatalysis, and battery, are comprehensively discussed. Further, it sheds light on the existing constraints in HEOs, highlights the adoption of theoretical and experimental tools to tackle challenges, while delineates potential directions for exploration in energy application.

Abstract:High-entropy materials (HEM) are expected to make new advances in electrocatalysis and energy storage by virtue of their broad compositional tunabilities, high-temperature stabilities, and high chemical stabilities. In recent years, HEM have been investigated extensively in these fields, prompting researchers to investigate the relationships among structure, composition, and electrochemical performance. This paper systematically reviews the recent advances of HEM, focusing on the controlled syntheses, atomic-scale structural analyses, progresses in electronic properties, and quantum calculations. The electrochemical performances of HEM in several representative reactions and batteries are then further discussed to demonstrate their structure–composition–property relationships. Finally, the development prospects of HEM in terms of controllable syntheses, deep characterizations and analyses, and applications are discussed and foreseen.

Abstract:High-entropy materials, which consist of multiple elements occupying a single sublattice in a disordered manner, have emerged as innovative material systems with various promising applications. Many macroscopic physical properties, such as electrical transport and thermal transport, are closely related to the periodic distribution of atoms. In high-entropy compounds, the long-range periodic arrangement of atoms is broken down by the disordered distribution of various elements, which would lead to changes in physical properties. Therefore, the high-entropy idea will open new avenues for designing these functional materials with promising performance and high reliability. This perspective focuses on the high-entropy strategies of thermoelectric materials, discussing how high entropy will alter their properties. The possible routes of designing high-entropy high-performance thermoelectric materials are prospected, which can also provide enlightenment for the development of high-entropy systems in other research fields.

Abstract:High‐entropy materials defy historical materials design paradigms by leveraging chemical disorder to kinetically stabilize novel crystalline solid solutions comprised of many endmembers. Formulational diversity results in local crystal structures that are seldom found in conventional materials that can strongly influence macroscopic physical properties. Thermodynamically prescribed chemical flexibility provides a means to tune such properties. Additionally, kinetic metastability results in many possible atomic arrangements, including both solid‐solution configurations and heterogeneous phase assemblies, depending on synthesis conditions. Local disorder induced by metastability, and extensive cation solubilities allowed by thermodynamics combine to give many high‐entropy oxide systems utility as electrochemical, magnetic, thermal, dielectric, and optical materials. Though high‐entropy materials research is maturing rapidly, much remains to be understood and many compositions still await discovery, exploration, and implementation. Abstract:Abstract High-entropy ceramics (HECs) are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with one or more Wyckoff sites shared by equal or near-equal atomic ratios of multi-principal elements. Although in the infant stage, the emerging of this new family of materials has brought new opportunities for material design and property tailoring. Distinct from metals, the diversity in crystal structure and electronic structure of ceramics provides huge space for properties tuning through band structure engineering and phonon engineering. Aside from strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity that have already been found in high-entropy alloys, new properties like colossal dielectric constant, super ionic conductivity, severe anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient, strong electromagnetic wave absorption, etc., have been discovered in HECs. As a response to the rapid development in this nascent field, this article gives a comprehensive review on the structure features, theoretical methods for stability and property prediction, processing routes, novel properties, and prospective applications of HECs. The challenges on processing, characterization, and property predictions are also emphasized. Finally, future directions for new material exploration, novel processing, fundamental understanding, in-depth characterization, and database assessments are given.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are emerging materials that are developed based on entropy and draw significant attention for designing their chemical disorders to bring different structural and physical characteristics. Over the past two decades, significant salient efforts have been conducted to explore many unique and useful properties of HEAs, such as overcoming the strength-ductile trade off, outstanding thermal stability, and excellent low temperature plasticity. Here, we review the key research topic of HEAs from the following three aspects: (i) performance advantages and composition design, (ii) performance-driven HEAs and (iii) fabrication process-driven HEAs. Towards their industrial applications, our article reviews a large range of methods to synthesis, fabricate and process HEAs. We also discuss the current challenges and future opportunities, mainly focusing on performance breakthroughs in HEAs.

This article provides a review of the high entropy effect, preparation methods, and main applications of high entropy ceramic materials, especially exploring relevant research on high entropy perovskite ceramics. It is expected to provide reference for the promotion of scientific research and the development of further large-scale applications of high-entropy ceramic materials.

Abstract:High-entropy materials emerged as a field of research in 2004, when the first research on high-entropy alloys was published. The scope was soon expanded from high-entropy alloys to medium-entropy alloys, as well as to ceramics, polymers and composite materials. A fundamental understanding on high-entropy materials was proposed in 2006 by the 'four core effects' — high-entropy, severe-lattice-distortion, sluggish-diffusion and cocktail effects — which are often used to describe and explain the mechanisms of various peculiar phenomena associated with high-entropy materials. Throughout the years, the effects have been examined rigorously, and their validity has been affirmed. This Perspective discusses the fundamental understanding of the four core effects in high-entropy materials and gives further insights to strengthen the understanding for these effects. All these clarifications are believed to be helpful in understanding low-to-high-entropy materials as well as to aid the design of materials when studying new compositions or pursuing their use in applications.

Abstract:High-entropy materials are a nascent class of materials that exploit a high configurational entropy to stabilize multiple elements in a single crystal lattice and to yield unique physical properties for applications in energy storage, catalysis, and thermoelectric energy conversion. Initially, the synthesis of these materials was conducted by approaches requiring high temperatures and long synthetic time scales. However, successful homogeneous mixing of elements at the atomic level within the lattice remains challenging, especially for the synthesis of nanomaterials. The use of atom-up synthetic approaches to build crystal lattices atom by atom, rather than the top-down alteration of extant crystalline lattices, could lead to faster, lower-temperature, and more sustainable approaches to obtaining high entropy materials. In this Perspective, we discuss some of these state-of-the-art atom-up synthetic approaches to high entropy materials and contrast them with more traditional approaches.
