Discovery of Melanism Mutation in Silkworm Bombyx mori and the Possibility of Its Practical Utilization

Abstract:A natural mutation melanism is discovered in silkworm variety Huafeng,its moth shows grayish black in the whole body and the wings. Silkworm larva of the mutation has some distinct characters from the normal one,that is,the head shows deep brown, the end part has browm marks, three pairs of thorax feet are black. The F1 progeny crossed between the melanism and the normal moths are all normal, and the corresponding F2 and BC1 have the progeny by crossing among the mutation moths show all melanism moths. Therefore, it is concluded that melanism is a recessive character. The development duration, survival rate of larval-pupa of the mutation silkworms are similar to that of the normal ones, however, its cocoon quality characters are a little lower than the normal ones. The possibility of its practical utilization in silkworm egg production and introduction techniques of the mutation into the commercial varieties are also discussed in the present paper.
