Abstract:This essay addresses the key role of analytical psychology amid our changing world: to work towards an expansion of Humanity's worldview. In current times of utmost transformation, it becomes imperative that we embrace a total cosmovision, one that includes the 360 degrees of existence: not only the 180 diurnal degrees of ascent, light and order, yet also the descendent sphere, incorporating what is unconscious, nocturnal and mysterious. Integrating this lower realm in our psychic life, however, contrasts our Western worldview, in which these two domains are seemingly opposed and mutually excluding. Mythopoetic language, and the mythologems that manifest in different myths, provide the means of delving into the profound paradoxes at the core of the total cosmovision. Myths such as Añañuca (Chile), Osiris (Egypt), Dionysus (Greece) and Innana (Sumer), highlight the descending path, providing a symbolic narrative of an archetypical transformation or spin, a key moment of "turning on its own axis" that merges the realms of Life and Death, ascent and descent, birth and decay. To live this paradoxical and generative path of transformation, individuals must seek their personal myth not outside but within themselves, where springs the Suprasense.

Abstract:Contemporary spirituality discourses tend to assume that a canopy of light and love overarches all spiritual pathways. Unfortunately, the dark side of humanity cannot be spirited away so easily, and aberrations of personal spiritual development, interpersonal spiritual relationships and new spiritual movements can often be traced to the denial, repression and return of our dark side. Transpersonal psychology offers a way of approaching, reframing and redeeming the unconscious depths of our psyche, with its metaphors of shadows and daimons on the one hand, and its therapeutic practices for symbolically containing and transcending polarities on the other. In its absence, any spirituality which eulogises holistic growth is likely to engender the reverse effect.

Abstract:This project tries to study the ways that lead Siddartha- a character in the novel of the same name by Hermann Hesse, to a state of liminality. It is a transitory moment in which a person realizes a perfect nothingness. It is a place neither outside nor inside, but a new journey starts from here. It is a phase in which a person forgets the present state of existence. It is a point of transition which is often accompanied by ritual. In the novel, Siddartha undergoes a situation in which his dissatisfaction with his present state of being leads him to meditate, through which he attains nothingness. This paper studies those moments of Siddhartha’s journey from the peripheral to the center from the perspective of Performance Studies. The finding of the study suggests that every one of us should try to find the essence of life within our own self for spiritual development. It makes a thematic analysis of the text with the insights of Turner Victor, Richard Schechner, Arnold Van, Tanya Goodman, Michelle Foucault, etc. It brings sources from the articles and books conceptually similar to Liminality or Transition.

Abstract:This article seeks to link art and archetypal psychology in the exploration of the psychic suffering of a population that has been forced to undertake a journey. It speaks of the power exercised by the collective over our psyche. I use a series of bronze sculptures called the bipedal migrant suitcase as a symbol of the migratory process, an image of the journey of those who must venture beyond the veil of the known to the unknown. A journey that addresses mysterious forces that restore the balance lost in the traveller, leading him to a destination that favours the presence of life-or-death forces.

Abstract:This reflective poem explores the profound human impact of receiving a serious medical diagnosis. The speaker grapples with the emotional upheaval of this sudden severing from one's presumed healthy future. There are attempts to cling to denial or bargain for a different outcome. But the truth of the diagnosis persists, sending ripples of change throughout the patient's life. Dreams slip away and plans evaporate in the crucible of illness. After a struggle, the mind makes peace and courageously leans into the difficulties ahead. The poem celebrates the human capacity to accept vulnerability, find gifts within trials, and walk the remaining road with wisdom. It reflects on how a diagnosis can heighten awareness that life is fleeting and precious. The accompanying digital artwork was generated using OpenAI's DALL·E 3 and modified using Adobe Firefly. It is a stark, black canvas, which can be seen as a metaphor for the profound and contemplative journey described patients go through. It symbolizes the inner darkness and uncertainty faced when confronting life-altering diagnoses, echoing the feelings of isolation, the search for meaning, and the gradual acceptance of a new reality as one navigates through the trials of illness.

Abstract:The plethora of existing concepts of journeying, as explored by the authors of articles collected in the present issue of RIAS, reveals the multifaceted nature of travel, irreducible to physical mobility alone. Despite their differences, all forms of travel share common elements, including leaving home, facing risks, stepping out of comfort zones, and encountering logistical challenges, which renders journeying a significant component of existential experience. Involving aporetic encounters with the unfamiliar, travels allow for the deconstruction of stereotypes, offering not only opportunities for the revision of ossified perspectives, but also opening space for philosophical self-exploration. Literature and visual culture throughout different eras have captured these insights, from travel diaries and reports to cartographic works, paintings, photographs, and modern digital media such as travel vlogs and virtual reality. These records reflect the multidimensionality of the “truth” of their times, testifying to the material reality of a given time and place, but also revealing cultural prejudices and the particularities of the dominant discourse of the time. The authors of the texts in this volume reconstruct historical worlds, uncovering new aspects of literature and cultural artifacts, and offering fresh perspectives on travel and journeys as depicted in literary and visual narratives of the Americas since the Spanish Conquest until the first decades of the 21st-century.

Abstract:The biggest crisis that we are in nowadays is existential, which is the state of not knowing our true natures or our true selves; hence, we suffer from deep anxiety and we fail to find safety and a way to ground ourselves. In this article, we share our practical experiences of encountering and practicing the teachings of two important Buddhist scriptures: the Heart Sutra and the Diamond Sutra. We show how both sutras, and especially their teachings on emptiness, allow us to remove our attachment to a sense of a separate self, which deepens our understanding about life, and transforms suffering toward peace and love. We further demonstrate the importance of meditation, contemplative chanting and reading, and experimentation with Buddhist teachings as pathways towards understanding our true natures. In sum, both sutras help us to go beyond the materialistic, capitalistic, narrow vision of who we are and to access the higher dimension of our existence, which allows us to discover our cosmic selves in the ultimate reality. It is through experiencing one’s true self that one gains a greater capacity to seek social transformation in times of crisis.

Toward a clinical model for patient spiritual journeys in supportive and palliative care: Testing a concept of human spirituality and associated recursive states

Abstract:Objective In 2015, a Chaplaincy Research Consortium generated a model of human spirituality in the palliative care context to further chaplaincy research. This article investigates the clinical fit of (a) the model's fundamental premise of universal human spirituality and (b) its 4 proposed stage descriptors (Discovery, Dialogue, Struggle, and Arrival). Method First, we collected qualitative data from an interdisciplinary palliative care focus group. Participants (n = 5) shared responses to the statement "the human spirit has essential commonalities across [ ... ] groups and [ ... ] attributes." Participants also shared vignettes of spiritual care, and 48 vignettes illustrating patients' spiritual journeys were subsequently taken from the transcript of that group. Second, we invited different mixed discipline palliative care professionals (n = 9) to individually card sort these vignettes to the model's 4 stage descriptors; we conducted pattern analysis on the results. We then administered a third step, convening six physicians to complete the card sort again, this time allowing designation of cards to one or two of the 4 stage descriptors. Results Focus group participants were supportive of the model's all-encompassing definition of spirituality. The concept of "connectedness" was a shared focus for all participants, connectedness and spirituality appearing almost synonymous. Pattern analysis of assigned 48 vignettes to the 4 stages showed stronger consensus around Discovery and Arrival than Struggle and Dialogue. Results of the additional card sort suggested Struggle and Dialogue involve oscillation and are harder to think of as a steady state as distinct from processes associated with Discovery or Arrival. Significance of results "Connectedness" is a productive concept for modeling human spiritual experience near the end of life. As one healthcare professional said: "this connectedness piece is [ ... ] what I always look for ... " Although further work is needed to understand struggle and dialogue elements in peoples' spiritual journeys, discovery and arrival shared consensus among participants.

Abstract:Does the phenomenology of human evil indeed attest to the correctness of the Freudian pessimistic thesis concerning man's tragic fate within the civilization that he himself had built? To answer this crucial question this study has a two-fold intention: (1) To pose vis-à-vis Freud's pessimistic thesis an optimistic alternative: one that dares to offer the abandonment of evil as the explanation of man's nature, and the return to a vision of human solidarity, ethical responsibility, and the faith in good; (2) To trace Freud's struggle against his own optimism. The study would propose a novel synergy between psychoanalytic self psychology and the Buddhist dharma in order to illustrate the existence of a vertical split within the core of the colossal essay of Civilization and Its Discontents, which reflects Freud's own emotional and intellectual distress between his manifest psychoanalytic pessimistic world-view, and his profound humane understanding of transcendental horizon of optimism. The transition from civilization of pessimism to the culture of compassion will be presented as a transition of the psychoanalytic domain from metaphysics of knowledge to metaphysics of presence.

Abstract:Traveling with the intention of encountering art or seeking purification of the spirit involves retribution of intangible nature and therefore can be expected to be a positive experience; nevertheless, among susceptible travelers, there is also a possibility of experiencing pathological conditions. Although it is colloquially known that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, it is necessary to mention that the appreciation of beauty, immensity, or mysticism contained in masterpieces is not perceived only through the eyes but through other sense organs as well. Additionally, this is understood within a cultural framework and through previous knowledge. The reaction triggers a series of somatosensory responses of diverse nature, with a wide range of responses that together constitute a pathological phenomenon that can be defined as syndromic by eliciting signs and symptoms of a physical, physiological, and psychotic nature. Both Stendhal and Jerusalem syndromes are travelers' syndromes that may occur in response to objectively aesthetic elements saturated with meaning linked to the cultural heritage of contemporary humanity. While Stendhal syndrome evokes physical and psychoemotional symptoms from the contemplation of art, Jerusalem syndrome goes beyond perception, adding delusions of being a religious or prophetic protagonist pursuing individual or collective salvation.

Abstract:Description As healthcare workers, invested in the wellbeing of our patients while also hoping to grow as individuals, we sometimes tend to view our jobs as a rigid duality-we are either "in love" with our practice and persevere flawlessly through all hardship, or we are "burnt out," coldhearted, and defeated by the heavy workload and expectations of medicine. In reality, we all sit somewhere in the middle of a blurry spectrum, balancing out physical, mental, and emotional pain with the immense honor of saving and cherishing human life, while simultaneously struggling to reconcile our altruistic goals with realistic but necessary human incentives. I want this open-ended work to acknowledge these challenging but critical "and yet" moments, and I hope anyone who is reading it can connect to the words personally and find new insight, regardless of where they are in life.

Abstract:We are surrounded by trauma, grief, pandemics, health care inequality, poverty, climate change, and social injustice, not to mention increases in suicide, depression, and loneliness. How can group therapists address these issues and thrive? The current special edition focuses on how groups foster compassion, provide spiritual healing, and address human suffering in effective and innovative ways. Instead of focusing on symptom reduction alone, group therapists and researchers are exploring ways that group therapy can provide healing and resources to people including health care providers, and those who are on the front lines. The current special edition will highlight how spiritual interventions, compassion and attachment-focused interventions, and group interventions can engender positive outcomes for diverse group members that include parents of inner-city children to first responders. If there ever was a time for us to focus on compassion, faith, and forgiveness, it is now.

Abstract:The significance of spiritual health in the Māori model of health. Abstract:Description As a psychiatrist in training, I often have the privilege to connect with the unique thoughts and visions patients may be experiencing. The descriptions shared by one patient during my early psychiatry inpatient rotations stuck with me and eventually inspired me to pursue a residency in the field. While interviewing, she expressed a deep spirituality and often finding solace in the mindfulness teachings of Gautama Buddha whenever she was distressed. She would strengthen this coping mechanism by contemplating him sitting and meditating deeply, within a naturalistic setting, however struggled in describing exactly what she was imagining. I further gathered this was a symbol of peace and stillness, an antithesis to the restless worrying thoughts and ruminations that colored her depression and anxiety. As someone who always found nature and drawing as restorative outlets for myself, I felt compelled to put that vision to paper. The vivid multi-color palette along with flowers and vines evoked a sense of life and levity, representing how her imagination painted a brighter outlook upon her overwhelming darker, grayer thoughts. Eastern philosophies often challenge our ideas of separateness between ourselves and the environment, therefore blurring the lines on where the outlines of the Buddha ended and where the natural elements began seemed appropriate. The nature imagery feeds into this, a butterfly and feathers for the fragile beauty of her mental state. In Eastern mythos, foxes were often depicted as creatures of transformation, guiding humans through duress with their wit and cleverness; which for me represented the mind as her companion, sublimating negative thoughts with creativity and imagination in order to guide her along her journey. This exercise reaffirmed my interest in psychiatry, for such interactions offered a window into the unique proclivities of the mind to protect itself in any way possible, even as an artist painting on an unseen canvas.
