Research on High Yield Cropping Pattern of Wheat Intercropping with Early and Middle Maturing Cotton

Abstract:The paper mainly discussed the optimal wheat-cotton intercropping pattern to increase cotton yield and its mechanism in high yield area in Huang huai hai Plain. The results showed that wheat—early maturing cotton—wheat—middle maturing cotton in rows of 3—2—3—2 was the effective intercropping pattern to raise cotton yield further in higher yield cotton field. Compared to traditional 3—2 wheat-cotton intercropping pattern, its wheat yield was nearly the same, but lint cotton yield increased 17.2%. The mechanism was due to : (1)the combine of early and middle maturing cotton together that established a compound population which could give full play to different maturing cotton variety in characteristic differences of growth period, plant type, bud and boll development process; (2)the different maturing cotton occupied the different time niche and space niche in population which made the compound canopy LAI trend reasonable that solve the problems of canopy closure, the light condition become worsen, the higher shedding of young bolls during late growing period of high yield cotton field on some degrees. The results also indicated that not all various maturing cotton randomly arranged together could raise the yield, the unsuitable arrangement pattern, i.e, 6—2—2, could not increase or even decrease cotton yield due to their econiche overlapping and competition become greater. In a word, the key to increase cotton yield was to select reasonable early and middle maturing cotton arrangement intercropping pattern.
