Abstract:Herein, we reported a simple one-pot green method for preparation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with a high quantum yield up to 8.6%, using glutathione as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Cu NCs had good water solubility, excellent stability and ultrafine size through the characterization of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence of Cu NCs was linearly quenched by the Fe3+ concentrations in the range of 1-100 mu M, with the detection limit of 0.3 mu M. Abstract:Two copper nanoclusters (NCs) stabilized by l-cysteine and glutathione have been reported. The nanoparticles with ultrafine size had excellent water solubility and exhibited green or red emission respectively. Particularly, the two copper clusters were found to be responsive to the presence of tetracycline (TC) and on-off quenching effects were achieved. After incubation, the cell staining and target-detection features could be still effective in two adherent live cells. The nanocluster showed very low cytotoxicity and excellent biological compatibility. Accordingly, the special photophysical properties of copper NCs will be attractive for various potential applications such as bio-sensing and medical diagnosis.
Au Nanoclusters/porous Silica Particles Nanocomposites As Fluorescence Enhanced Sensors for Sensing and Mapping of Copper(ii) in Cells.

Abstract:In this work, we first report Au nanoclusters/porous silica particles nanocomposites as fluorescence enhanced sensors for selective and sensitive detection of Cu (II). As red-emitting GSH-protected Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) were self-assemble into porous silica particles (PSPs) after ultrasonic treatment. As a result, the Au NCs can be immobilized in the nano-channels of PSPs, which leads to the observation of an immobilized induced emission enhancement phenomenon. The photoluminscence (PL) intensity of the nanocomposites can enhance dozens of times compared with Au NCs. As a result, we obtain a novel PL enhanced sensor of Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites with excellent PL properties. The as-prepared Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites show good water-solubility, high stability, low toxicity, and exhibit a high PL quenching for reliable, sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+. The limit of detection can reach as low as 1 ppb. What is more, the Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites also show sensitive detection of Cu2+ in living cells. These properties provide the Au NCs/PSPs nanocomposites with promising PL sensors for Cu2+ detection in various environmental and biological systems.
Optically tunable fluorescent carbon nanoparticles and their application in fluorometric sensing of copper ions

Abstract:A series of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) with emission wavelength ranging from 483 to 525 nm were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of poly-3-thiopheneacetic acid (PTA) and NaOH. The emission wavelength and surface oxidation degree of CNPs were shown to be controllable by simply adjusting NaOH concentration. These CNPs presented obvious fluorescence spectral response toward copper ions (Cu 2+ ) through static quenching caused synergistically by electron transfer and inner filter effect. The O- and S-containing groups on the surface of CNPs were demonstrated to be responsible for their outstanding sensing performance. Based on that, a CNPs-based ratiometric fluorescent probe for Cu 2+ with a high fluorescence quenching rate constant of 1.4 × 10 5 L/mol and a short response time (10 s) was developed. Their practical applications in detecting Cu 2+ in pond water and living cells were also demonstrated.

Abstract:As an ideal substitute for traditional organic fluorescent dyes or up-conversion nanomaterials, copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) have developed rapidly and have been involved in exciting achievements in versatile applications. The emergence of novel CuNCs composites improves the poor stability and fluorescence intensity of CuNCs. With this in mind, great efforts have been made to develop a wide variety of CuNCs composites, and impressive progress has been made in the past few years. In this review, we systematically summarize absorption, fluorescence, electrochemiluminescence, and catalytic properties and focus on the multiple factors that affect the fluorescence properties of CuNCs. The fluorescence properties of CuNCs are discussed from the point of view of core size, surface ligands, self-assembly, metal defects, pH, solvent, ions, metal doping, and confinement effect. Especially, we illustrate the research progress and representative applications of CuNCs composites in bio-related fields, which have received considerable interests in the past years. Additionally, the sensing mechanism of CuNCs composites is highlighted. Finally, we summarize current challenges and look forward to the future development of CuNCs composites. Facile Synthesis of Ultrastable Fluorescent Copper Nanoclusters and Their Cellular Imaging Application

Abstract:Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) are generally formed by several to dozens of atoms. Because of wide range of raw materials and cheap prices, Cu NCs have attracted scientists’ special attention. However, Cu NCs tend to undergo oxidation easily. Thus, there is a dire need to develop a synthetic protocol for preparing fluorescent Cu NCs with high QY and better stability. Herein, we report a one-step method for preparing stable blue-green fluorescent copper nanoclusters using glutathione (GSH) as both a reducing agent and a stabilizing agent. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometer (ESI-MS) were used to characterize the resulting Cu NCs. The as-prepared Cu NCs@GSH possess an ultrasmall size (2.3 ± 0.4 nm), blue-green fluorescence with decent quantum yield (6.2%) and good stability. MTT results clearly suggest that the Cu NCs@GSH are biocompatible. After incubated with EB-labeled HEK293T cells, the Cu NCs mainly accumulated in nuclei of the cells, suggesting that the as-prepared Cu NCs could potentially be used as the fluorescent probe for applications in cellular imaging.
Encapsulating Copper Nanoclusters in 3D Metal-Organic Frameworks to Boost Fluorescence for Bio-Enzyme Sensing, Inhibitor Screening, and Light-Emitting Diode Fabrication

Abstract:Herein, copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) were encapsulated with metal-organic framework based on the confine-ment effect to fabricate a sensitive fluorescence probe for xanthine oxidase activity monitoring and inhibitor screening. Compared with CuNCs, the yielded fluorescent composite exhibits long fluorescence lifetime, high quantum yield, and strong stability. The fluorescence intensity of the sensor is efficiently quenched by H2O2 (lambda em = 566 nm), which is a product of the oxidation of xanthine by dissolved oxygen in the presence of xanthine oxidase. On this basis, a fluorescent sensor was reported for xanthine oxidase detection with a detection limit of 0.034 U/L, and a good linear range from 0.4 to 28 U/L. This method is capable of screening xanthine oxidase inhibitors as potential drugs for the treatment of diseases such as hyperuricemia. Moreover, the composite was used to manufacture orange and white light-emitting diodes. Taken together, the present work provides a new heuristic strategy for the monitoring of xanthine oxidase and the screening of its inhibitors, and exhibits some insights into the construction of multicolor light-emitting diodes.
Ultra-small water-soluble fluorescent copper nanoclusters for p-nitrophenol detection

Abstract:Due to the widespread application of p -nitrophenol ( p -NP) across various industries, particularly in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, it has emerged as a significant environmental contaminant in both soil and water ecosystems. The development of swift and sensitive detection platforms for p -NP is therefore demanding. Herein, a fluorescence sensor based on ultra-small copper nanoclusters with exterior glutathione ligands determined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) as [Cu 14 (SG) 12 ] + (denoted as Cu-SG NCs) has been prepared in high efficiency, and shown high selectivity for p -NP detection. The Cu-SG NCs, synthesized via a facile one-pot chemical reduction technique, exhibit emission maxima at 620 nm. Notably, the introduction of p -NP into the nanocluster system causes a significant quenching of the Cu-SG NCs fluorescence. The quenching phenomenon arises predominantly as a result of the inner filter effect (IFE), which stems from the substantial overlap between the UV-Vis absorption spectrum of p -NP and the excitation wavelength of Cu-SG NCs. The developed fluorescence sensor platform demonstrates a wide determination range for p -NP, ranging from 0.04 to 2000 μM, with a detection limit of 30 nM. Additionally, the sensor efficacy was successfully validated in the analysis of actual water samples. The ease of synthesis, excellent optical properties, and low toxicity of Cu-SG NCs represent significant advantages over the reported noble metal nanomaterials and is highly promising for future practical applications.

Abstract:Copper is an essential mineral nutrient for the human body. However, excessive levels of copper accumulated in the body can cause some diseases. Therefore, it is great significant to establish a sensitive bioprobe to recognize copper ions (Cu2+) in vivo. In our work, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) are selected as luminescent nanomaterials and the Au NCs/N- CDs nanohybrids is successfully synthesized by coupling method. The Au NCs/N-CDs exhibited characteristic dual-emission peaks at 450 and 620 nm when excited by a single-wavelength of 380 nm. When different amounts of Cu2+ are introduced, the fluorescence intensity of the Au NCs is gradually weakened and fluorescence intensity of the N-CDs is almost unchanged, which can facilitate the visual detection of Cu2+. The Au NCs/N-CDs nanohybrid possesses good selectivity to Cu2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) is 3.5 mu M and linear detection range of 10-150 mu M. Visualization detection of Cu2+ is implemented by using nanoprobe in water samples. Furthermore, the ratiometric nanoprobe is utilized to the toxicity test of liver cancer cells, indicating excellent biocompatibility and low toxicity. This nanoprobe has been used to the intracellular fluorescence imaging. Moreover, this method is expected to be used to monitor the changes of Cu2+ concentration in hepatocytes. Abstract:A simple, one-pot synthetic route was developed for the preparation of green-emitting and pH-responsive Cu nanoclusters (NCs). The Cu NCs were obtained using cysteine (Cys) as both the reducing agent and the capping agent under alkaline conditions at room temperature. The Cu NCs were characterized using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques and exhibited excellent water solubility, ultrasmall size, good dispersion, bright fluorescence and good photostability. Moreover, the Cu NCs were stable even in a high ionic strength medium such as 1M NaCl. Interestingly, the Cys-Cu NCs showed an intrinsically reversible response toward pH change in the range 4-10, and thus can be utilized as an effective and reversible pH indicator.
A new luminescent nickel nanocluster with solvent and ion induced emission enhancement toward heavy metal analysis

Abstract:Expanding the family of fluorescent metal clusters beyond gold, silver, and copper has always been an issue for researchers to solve. In this study, a novel type of cysteine-capped nickel nanoclusters (Cys-Ni NCs) with bright turquoise emission was developed. The as-synthesized Ni NCs showed aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties across Cd2+ and various polar organic solvents. Concurrently, solvents with different viscosities were used to explore the principle of solvent-induced AIEE of Cys-Ni NCs, revealing a positive correlation between fluorescence intensity and solution viscosity. In addition, the concentration of Cd2+ that induced the AIEE effect was reduced by nearly two orders of magnitude in highly viscous solvents, indicating the possibility of Cys-Ni NCs as a promising nanomaterial platform for Cd2+ sensing analysis. Moreover, we propose a novel fluorescent sensing method for rapid detection of Cu2+ based on the carboxyl group of Cys-Ni NCs coupling with Cu2+. Further, validation of Cu2+ detecting methodologies in environmental water samples with the accuracy up to 93.94% underscores their potential as robust and efficient sensing platforms. This study expands the repertoire of fluorescent metal nanoclusters for highly sensitive and selective sensing of hazardous ions and paves the way for further exploration and wide applications in Cu2+ detection in biological and medicine fields.
Ultra-stable L-proline protected copper nanoclusters and their solvent effect

Abstract:Water-soluble and ultra-stable L-proline-protected copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) are reported, which overcome the bottleneck that Cu NCs are easily oxidized. The average size of Cu NCs is found to be 1.88 ± 0.17 nm. The as-prepared Cu NCs exhibit an excellent stability over the physiologically relevant pH range, long storage time, high ionic strength, high concentration of hydrogen peroxide and various common metal ions. The fluorescence intensity of Cu NCs maintains no change after 5 months stored in the refrigerator. Interestingly, the Cu NCs show a pH-dependent fluorescence behavior between 9 and 13, and the reversible process can be repeated for 8 consecutive cycles with the excellent reversibility of the fluorescence intensity. Moreover, the as-prepared Cu NCs display the solvent-dependent properties in the dimethyl sulfoxide and ethylenediamine, where the emission color turn to be green and yellow from blue, respectively. This unique fluorescence property of Cu NCs will make them serve as good probes in analytical applications.

Promising Anodic Electrochemiluminescence of Nontoxic Core/Shell CuInS2/ZnS Nanocrystals in Aqueous Medium and Its Biosensing Potential

Abstract:Copper indium sulfide (CuInS2, CIS) nanocrystals (NCs) are a promising solution to the toxic issue of Cd- and Pb-based NCs. Herein, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of CIS NCs in aqueous medium is investigated for the first time with l-glutathione and sodium citrate-stabilized water-soluble CIS/ZnS NCs as model. The CIS/ZnS NCs can be oxidized to hole-injected states via electrochemically injecting holes into valence band at 0.55 and 0.94 V (vs Ag/AgCl), respectively. The hole-injected state around 0.94 V can bring out efficient oxidative-reduction ECL with a similar color to Ru(bpy)32+ in the presence of tri- n-propylamine (TPrA) and enable CIS/ZnS NCs promising ECL tags with l-glutathione as linker for labeling. The ECL of CIS/ZnS NCs/TPrA can be utilized to determine vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from 0.10 to 1000 pM with the limit of detection at 0.050 pM (S/N = 3). Although the hole-injected state around 0.55 V is generated ahead of oxidation of TPrA and fails to bring out coreactant ECL, annihilation ECL proves that both hole-injected states generated, at 0.55 and 0.94 V, can be involved in electrochemical redox-induced radiative charge transfer by directly stepping CIS/ZnS NCs from electron-injecting potential to hole-injecting potential. CIS/ZnS NCs are promising nontoxic electrochemiluminophores with lowered ECL triggering potential around 0.55 V for less electrochemical interference upon the development of coreactant.

Abstract:A one-pot sonochemical reaction of Cu(NO3)(2) with glutathione (GSH), the latter functioning as a reducing agent and a stabilizing agent, rapidly affords Cu nanoclusters (NCs). The as-prepared GSH-CuNCs possess a small size (similar to 2.2 +/- 0.2 nm), red luminescence with quantum yield (5.3%), and water-dispersibility. Moreover, the fluorescence of the as-prepared GSH-CuNCs is responsive to pH so that the intensity of fluorescence increases rapidly with decreasing pH from 9 to 4. Besides, the GSH-CuNCs would be aggregated by Pb2+ ions in aqueous solution which results in quenching of the fluorescence. Therefore, such GSH-CuNCs would be excellent candidates as fluorescent probes for the label-free detection of Pb2+ with the limit of detection at 1.0 nM. Importantly, CAL-27 cells are used as models to achieve potential application as probes for monitoring Pb2+ in living cells. Thus, these fluorescent CuNCs could work as an alternative to conventional fluorescent probes for biolabeling, sensing and other applications.

Abstract:Copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) with bright blue-emitting fluorescence have been synthesized via a simple one-pot process using 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI) as a stabilizer. The as-prepared MMI-CuNCs exhibited a high quantum yield of 19.2%, a long luminescence lifetime of 10.57 μs, and excellent photostability. Significantly, the fluorescence intensities of MMI-CuNCs were effectively quenched with addition of Ag+ ions, and the MMI-stabilized CuNCs were developed as a sensitive fluorescent nanoprobe for the label-free determination of silver ions for the first time. The fluorescence sensor provided a fast linear response toward Ag+ in the range of 0.025–50 μM, with a detection limit of 6.7 nM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was ascribed to an agglomeration-induced effect and static quenching. A fluorescence sensing platform was successfully applied for Ag+ detection in human serum samples with good accuracy and high reproducibility, signifying the practical applicability of the assay. Additionally, MMI-CuNCs displayed good solid-state blue emission and are suitable for security ink applications. The MMI-CuNCs were utilized as a color conversion layer to construct blue- and white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with excellent white light properties by a facile combination of MMI-CuNCs and UV LED chips. This result facilitates multiple functions of MMI-CuNCs in the application of label-free sensors, anticounterfeiting, and optical devices.

Abstract:Trace detection of toxic heavy metal ions is a hot topic in the sensing research area, especially in the organic phase using inorganic fluorescent colloidal nanocrystals. We report Mn-doped CsPbCl3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), which were synthesized via the hot-injection method, as a fluorescent probe for the detection of copper ions in hexane. The introduction of Mn altered the emission peak, and lower the toxicity of the probe material. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Mn-doped CsPbCl3 PNCs is significantly quenched after contact with the [Formula: see text] solution. The mechanism of Cu quenching is electron transfer, which is experimentally proved by analyzing the PL spectrum, absorption spectrum and PL decay lifetime. The sensor in solution shape and solid shape is both prepared and their detection range from 10 nM to 500 [Formula: see text]M. The limit of detection in a low concentration area reaches 10 nM, showing great potential in sensing applications. This work expands the wavelength area of the [Formula: see text] detection probe by perovskite nanocrystals, and also improves the properties of probe material in optical performance, low toxicity, and stability.
