Abstract:Mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables smart terminals to actively offload computation workloads to computational servers deployed at the edge of networks, has provided an efficient approach to address the intensive computation requirement in mobile Internet applications. In this paper, we investigate the delay-aware computation offloading via MEC for Internet of Things (IoT) with secrecy provisioning. Specifically, we consider a scenario where a malicious eavesdropper intentionally overhears the IoT devices’ offloaded computational data. Taking into account the secrecy outage due to the eavesdropper’s overhearing, we formulate a joint optimization of the secrecy-provisioning, computation offloading, and radio resource allocation (including time and power allocations), with the objective of minimizing the overall delay in finishing the computation requirement of the IoT device. Despite the nonconvexity of the joint optimization problem, we propose an efficient algorithm to compute the optimal computation offloading solution. By exploiting the optimal offloading decision of each IoT device, we further consider the scenario of a group of IoT devices offloading computation workloads to the edge server, and investigate how the edge server optimally selects the devices for providing the computation offloading service while subject to the limited energy budget and the time-slot budget of the edge server. We propose an efficient algorithm to find the optimal selection of the devices. We present extensive numerical results to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms and show the impact of the secrecy requirement.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the cellular assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) via non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), where a group of edge-computing users (EUs) exploit NOMA to simultaneously offload their computation-workloads to an edge-server (ES), and conventional cellular-user (CU) allows the EUs to reuse its authorized frequency channel for the NOMA-transmission. We firstly characterize the transmit-powers of the CU and EUs and then formulate a joint optimization of the EUs' offloaded computation-workloads, offloading-duration (i.e., how long for reusing the CU's channel), as well as the ES's computation-resource allocations (for processing different EUs' offloaded workloads), with the objective of minimizing the overall-latency in completing all EUs' computation-requirements, subject to the CU's and EUs' limited power and energy capacities as well as the ES's limited computation-resource capacity. Despite the strict non-convexity of the formulated joint optimization problem, we propose an efficient algorithm to compute the optimal offloading solution. With the optimal offloading solution for the scenario of one CU, we further investigate the scenario of multiple CUs and investigate the optimal pairing of the EUs for reusing different CUs' channels for computation-offloading. Taking into account the coupling effect due to the ES's limited computation-resource, we formulate a joint optimization of the EU-pairing and the ES's capacity allocation of the computation-resource for accommodating different EU-pairs. Despite the difficulty due to the mixed binary and non-linear non-convex programming of the formulated problem, we propose an efficient layered algorithm for solving the problem. Numerical results are provided to validate the accuracy of our proposed algorithms. We also show the performance advantage of our NOMA-assisted offloading in comparison with conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based computation offloading.
Partial Offloading for Latency Minimization in Mobile-Edge Computing.

Abstract:The mobile edge computing platform [2, 3] generally measured the delay based on the total time required to offload the services of edge devices to edge servers. On the other hand, the service delay is also depended on the response time of edge services from different mobile applications. Hence, there exists a disparity between the actual and measured service delay experienced by the mobile edge devices. This type problem arises due to the fact that the wireless radio network infrastructure is shared by the multiple mobile devices. As a result, the congestion occurs in the network and the arrival packets are likely to be dropped by the network switches in the access network. In such situation, the real-time critical edge applications mostly care about the quality-of-service (QoS) for different mobile devices, while offloading the edge services to edge servers. Thus, we improve the QoS of edge devices using delay-agnostic service offloading scheme to meet the offloading requirements of those delay-agnostic applications. Prior works have devoted to filling the gap at edge network by introducing the priority-based computational offloading [1] or energy-efficient resource allocation [4] schemes for edge computing applications. However, the priority-based service offloading and resource allocation do not provide the fair QoS to mobile devices, as the actual bottleneck is usually existed in the delay-agnostic nature of mobile applications. Therefore, although the existing offloading schemes perform well for multi-modal applications in terms of energy efficiency and computational overhead [1]. However, in those works, they assumed that the delay requirement of services to be fixed, but in real-life the delay requirement of services may vary radically. This type of situation is considered to be delay-agnostic property for edge devices, in this poster. Looking at the above points, we propose DESERVE, which introduces a delay-agnostic service offloading scheme for mobile edge computing platform in order to improve the QoS of each individual. The overview of DESERVE is depicted in Figure 1. For the edge devices, the flexible and optimal resource allocation technique is exploited for delay-agnostic service offloading scheme in edge computing platform. The resource allocation technique is leveraged for edge devices using the advanced techniques of software defined networks (SDN). However, an adaptive service identifier is deployed specifically for the identification of critical edge applications at the edge of mobile edge platform, instead of installing centralized SDN controller. After the identification of critical edge services, the identified services are forwarded to the controller and the corresponding rules to be offloaded for those services in the edge servers of edge platform.

Abstract:This paper investigates a multiuser mobile edge computing system under interference channels, where mobile users can offload their latency-sensitive (computation-intensive) tasks to the mobile edge server via a base station (BS). In this work, we seek to jointly optimize the user selection indicators for offloading and the computation resources, as well as the transmit power level of the offloading users in order to minimize the system energy consumption under latency-sensitive, computation and transmit power budget, transmission quality, and user selection constraints. The proposed optimization problem is nonconvex and highly coupled, which is difficult to solve. By exploiting binary relaxation and introducing auxiliary variables, we first convert this problem into a more tractable form. We then propose a concave-convex procedure (CCCP) based algorithm to obtain the resulting problem. Furthermore, a simplified algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results are proposed to verify the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:By offloading intensive computation tasks to the edge cloud located at the cellular base stations, mobile-edge computation offloading (MECO) has been regarded as a promising means to accomplish the ambitious millisecond-scale end-to-end latency requirement of fifth-generation networks. In this paper, we investigate the latency-minimization problem in a multi-user time-division multiple access MECO system with joint communication and computation resource allocation. Three different computation models are studied, i.e., local compression, edge cloud compression, and partial compression offloading. First, closed-form expressions of optimal resource allocation and minimum system delay for both local and edge cloud compression models are derived. Then, for the partial compression offloading model, we formulate a piecewise optimization problem and prove that the optimal data segmentation strategy has a piecewise structure. Based on this result, an optimal joint communication and computation resource allocation algorithm is developed. To gain more insights, we also analyze a specific scenario where communication resource is adequate while computation resource is limited. In this special case, the closed-form solution of the piecewise optimization problem can be derived. Our proposed algorithms are finally verified by numerical results, which show that the novel partial compression offloading model can significantly reduce the end-to-end latency.

Abstract:To minimize the average latency of users to complete tasks, this letter jointly optimizes offloading decision, computation and bandwidth resource allocation for Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) networks via partial offloading. Since the considered problem is strongly non-convex with coupled variables, we decompose the original problem into two subproblems: (1) offloading decision; (2) communication bandwidth and computation resources allocation, and further employ Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) method to tackle them sequentially with linear computation complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve better performance on the average latency, and converge speedily.

Abstract:Mobile edge computing (MEC) has recently emerged as a promising technology to release the tension between computation-intensive applications and resource-limited mobile terminals (MTs). In this paper, we construct a Markov decision process (MDP) framework to optimize the delay performance in computation-constrained mobile edge networks. Different to most of the existing works, we consider the computation task queue at the MEC server due to its constrained computation capability. In this case, the task queue at the MT and that at the MEC server are mutually strongly coupled in a cascade manner, which creates complex interdependence and brings new technical challenges. To address the challenge, the infinite horizon average cost MDP is reformulated to a virtual continuous time system (VCTS) with reflections. We derive the closed-form approximate priority functions for the MDP in different system scenarios with dynamic rate estimation. Based on the approximate priority function, we propose a multi-level water filling solution to characterize the influence of not only the local queue state information (LQSI) but also the remote queue state information (RQSI) on the computation offloading policy in a closed form. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed computation offloading scheme outperforms the conventional schemes.

Abstract:ABSTRACTMobile Cloud Computing (MCC) enables smartphones to offload compute-intensive codes and data to clouds or cloudlets for energy conservation. Thus, MCC liberates smartphones from battery shortage and embraces more versatile mobile applications. Most pioneering MCC research work requires a consistent network performance for offloading. However, such consistency is challenged by frequent mobile user movements and unstable network quality, thereby resulting in a suboptimal offloading decision. To embrace network inconsistency, we propose ENDA, a three-tier architecture that leverages user track prediction, realtime network performance and server loads to optimize offloading decisions. On cloud tier, we first design a greedy searching algorithm to predict user track using historical user traces stored in database servers. We then design a cloud-enabled Wi-Fi access point (AP) selection scheme to find the most energy efficient AP for smartphone offloading. We evaluate the performance of ENDA through simulations under a real-world scenario. The results demonstrate that ENDA can generate offloading decisions with optimized energy efficiency, desirable response time, and potential adaptability to a variety of scenarios. ENDA outperforms existing offloading techniques that do not consider user mobility and server workload balance management.

Abstract:Mobile edge computing (MEC) enables the caching of various services close to users, thereby reducing service delay for emerging applications. However, realizing efficient and secure computation offloading is challenging due to the limited storage capacity of MEC servers and the offloading security issue arising from the open nature of wireless channels. In this letter, we investigate a MEC network with an eavesdropper, where the MEC server caches service programs required for task execution. Moreover, we propose a cooperative jamming-assisted scheme to enhance the security of computation offloading, in which a friendly jammer actively transmits signals to disrupt eavesdropping. Considering the limited caching capacity of the MEC server and the security concerns of computation offloading, we formulate a delay minimization problem by jointly optimizing service caching placement, transmit power, and devices' computation offloading decisions. To tackle this problem, we develop an efficient layered algorithm using successive convex approximation and the cross entropy-based technique. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in reducing the overall delay in completing devices' computation tasks compared to baseline schemes.

Abstract:Edge service caching can significantly mitigate latency and reduce communication and computing overhead by fetching and initializing services (applications) from clouds. The freshness of cached service data is critical when providing satisfactory services to users, but has been overlooked in existing research efforts. In this paper, we study the online low-latency and fresh service provisioning in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. Specifically, we jointly optimize the service caching, task offloading, and resource allocation without knowledge of future system information, which is formulated as a joint online long-term optimization problem. This problem is NP-hard. To solve the problem, we design a Lyapunov-based online framework that decouples the problem at temporal level into a series of per-time-slot subproblems. For each subproblem, we propose an online integrated optimization-deep reinforcement learning (OIODRL) method, which contains an optimization stage including a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) transformation and a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method, and a learning stage including a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm. Extensive simulations show that the proposed OIODRL method achieves a near-optimal solution and outperforms other benchmark methods.

Abstract:Edge computing has become a major trend in networking research. The rapid growth in the number of data analytics based mobile applications has resulted in an exponential rise in processing demand. One way to cope with this increased processing demand is to use edge networks (EN), which is a wireless ad-hoc network of mobile cloudlets, vehicular cloudlets, dedicated edge devices, and cloud platforms. Typically these devices have different owners and service providers. In this work, we propose a distributed incentive mechanism for an EN, which does not require a trusted third party (TTP). We consider a multi hop EN where a user offloads tasks to neighboring nodes, which may further offload them to their neighbours or the cloud. Our scheme is computationally efficient and helps each node decide on the incentives and workload distribution. We conducted simulations to study the performance of our scheme in different scenarios, including those of untruthful behavior by some nodes. Results show the benefit of using multi hop offloading and that our scheme discourages the untruthful behavior of nodes by assigning them lesser workload. We also propose a partially distributed incentive mechanism and compared its performance to our fully distributed scheme.

Abstract:With the growing popularity of Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has emerged for reducing the heavy workload at the multi-cloud core network by deploying computing and storage resources at the edge of network close to users. In IoT, services are data-intensive and event-driven, resulting in extensive dependencies among services. Traditional task offloading schemes face significant challenges in the IoT scenario with service dependencies. To this end, this paper proposes an intelligent approach for minimizing latency and energy consumption which jointly considers the task scheduling and resource allocation for dependent IoT services in MEC. Specifically, we establish the system model, communication model as well as computing model for performance evaluation by fully considering the dependent relationships among services, and an optimization problem is proposed for minimizing the delay and energy consumption simultaneously. Then, we design a layered scheme to deal with the service dependencies, and present detailed algorithms to intelligently obtain optimal task scheduling and resource allocation policies. Finally, simulation experiments are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
An Online Computation Offloading Mechanism for Mobile Edge Computing in Ultra-Dense Small Cell Networks.

Abstract:Combining the ultra-dense deployment of small-cell base stations (SBSs) and mobile edge computing (MEC) will largely enhance network capacity and provide low-latency computing services for various resource-hungry mobile applications in the future 5G networks. However, performing effective computation offloading will face many new challenges, due to the online nature resulted from the dynamic arrival of tasks and the limited computational resources provided by self-interested SBS owners. In this paper, we develop a novel online computation offloading mechanism, in order to optimize social welfare (system performance) under the task's dynamic arrival and constrained resources capacity. Our mechanism runs in the online fashion without prior knowledge of the future system dynamics and can achieve close-optimal performance compared to the optimal solutions with the complete information. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed online mechanism possesses several desired properties, including individual rationality, truthfulness, computational efficiency, and provable competitive ratio. Moreover, we carry out extensive simulations to demonstrate the mechanism efficiency.
Performance Guaranteed Partial Offloading for Mobile Edge Computing.

Abstract:In this paper, we jointly consider partial offloading and resource allocation to minimize the sum latency with energy efficiency for multi-user mobile-edge computation offloading (MECO) system based on orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA). We formulate mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) sum latency minimization problem considering the edge execution delay, desired energy consumption for local computation, OFDMA, QoS, transmission power in uplink and edge computation capacity constraints. We propose that a user can make use of multi-channel transmissions to reduce the transmission delay for task with large data size. We first derive an expression to determine optimal offloading fraction such that edge computing delay is less than the local execution delay and energy consumed for local execution does not exceed the desired limit. Then, we transform the original problem into communication and computation resource allocation problem and propose a suboptimal low complexity algorithm to find the resource allocation. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves 17% and 25% better performance than random and complete offloading schemes, respectively.
An Incentive-Aware Job Offloading Control Framework for Mobile Edge Computing

Abstract:This paper considers a scenario in which an access point (AP) is equipped with a mobile edge server of finite computing power, and serves multiple resource-hungry mobile users by charging users a price. Pricing provides users with incentives in offloading. However, existing works on pricing are based on abstract concave utility functions (e.g, the logarithm function), giving no dependence on physical layer parameters. To that end, we first introduce a novel utility function, which measures the cost reduction by offloading as compared with executing jobs locally. Based on this utility function we then formulate two offloading games, with one maximizing individual's interest and the other maximizing the overall system's interest. We analyze the structural property of the games and admit in closed form the Nash Equilibrium and the Social Equilibrium, respectively. The proposed expressions are functions of the user parameters such as the weights of computational time and energy, the distance from the AP, thus constituting an advancement over prior economic works that have considered only abstract functions. Finally, we propose an optimal pricing-based scheme, with which we prove that the interactive decision-making process with self-interested users converges to a Nash Equilibrium point equal to the Social Equilibrium point.
Dependent Task Offloading and Service Caching with State Management for Mobile Edge Computing

Abstract:The widespread use of 5G and artificial intelligence applications has led to strong momentum in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). With MEC, we can offload compute-intensive tasks to edge servers that are closer to the user, thereby reducing the long latency incurred by data transmission via WAN. Although many works have investigated task offloading decisions under service caching, the state of services is an equal, if not more important, research area of MEC, yet receive much less attention. In general, the arrival of tasks exhibit a distribution over time. Besides the necessary energy consumption in processing tasks offloaded to edge servers, a large amount of energy is required for maintaining services cached on servers. When more and more services become idle, they will incur a non-negligible additional energy. In this paper, we focus on an interesting but currently less studied problem in MEC, namely online service caching and state management in MEC. We propose DCSO, a bounded online algorithm that considers dynamic service caching and state management of services to minimize long-term cost in MEC systems. Meanwhile, our algorithm achieves a 2 competitive ratio in state management. Trace-driven simulations show that our algorithm reduces the overall cost efficiently while keeping low computation latency.
Computation Peer Offloading in Mobile Edge Computing with Energy Budgets

Abstract:The dense deployment of small-cell base stations (SBSs) endowed with cloud-like computing capabilities paves the way for pervasive mobile edge computing (MEC), enabling ultra-low latency and location-awareness for emerging mobile applications. To handle spatially imbalanced computation workloads in the network, cooperation among SBSs via peer offloading is essential to avoid large latency at overloaded SBSs and provide high quality of service to end users. However, performing effective peer offloading faces many challenges due to uncertainties of the system dynamics, limited energy budget committed by SBS owners and co- provisioning of radio access and computing services. This paper develops a novel online SBS peer offloading framework, called OPEN, by leveraging the Lyapunov technique, in order to maximize the long-term system performance while keeping the energy consumption of SBSs below individual long-term energy budget. OPEN works online without requiring future information of system dynamics, yet provides provably near-optimal performance compared to the oracle solution with complete future information. Extensive simulations are carried out and show that proposed algorithm dramatically improves the performance of edge computing system.

Abstract:Mobile-edge computing is a promising technology to enable real-time information transmission and computing by offloading computation tasks from wireless devices to network edge. In this letter, we propose a price-based distributed method to manage the offloaded computation tasks from users. A Stackelberg game is formulated to model the interaction between the edge cloud and users, where the edge cloud sets prices to maximize its revenue subject to its finite computation capacity, and for given prices, each user locally makes offloading decision to minimize its own cost which is defined as latency plus payment. Depending on the edge cloud’s knowledge of the network information, we develop the uniform and differentiated pricing algorithms, which can both be implemented in distributed manners. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.
