Abstract:Investigation on the fundamental coordination chemistry between U(VI) and simple organic ligands is important to understand the chemical behavior of U(VI) in natural environment and separation processes. In this work, the complexation of U(VI) with a common carboxylic acid, benzoic acid, has been systematically investigated through potentiometry, spectrometry and DFT calculations. Three successive complexes (UO2L+, UO2L2 and UO2L3−, L = benzoate ion) between U(VI) and benzoic acid are successfully identified in aqueous solution and their corresponding thermodynamic parameters (stability constant, enthalpy and entropy) are determined. Notably, it is the first time the previous missing 1:2 and 1:3 (U to L) complexes in aqueous solution and their complexation thermodynamics are reported, which would aid more accurate prediction of the chemical behavior of U(VI) in the presence of benzoic acid. Moreover, the structures of the complexes are elucidated by DFT calculation, which shows that benzoic acid coordinates to U(VI) in bidentate form in all the complexes.

Syntheses, Structures and Properties of Zn(II) and Cu(II) Complexes Based on N2-2-methylenepyridinyl 1,2,3-Triazole Ligand

Abstract:Four new Zn(II) and Cu(II) coordinated polymers ([ZnL2N3]ClO4 (1), [Cu2L2(CH3CN)]Cl4 (2) [CuL](NO3)2 (3), [Cu(H2O)L](SO4) (4) L=2-((4-phenyl-2H-1,2,3-triazol-2-yl)methyl) pyridine (ptmp)) have been reported. All the compounds have been characterized by IR spectrum, elemental analyses and X-ray crystallography diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses show that one-dimensional polymers are formed in these four complexes. Chain-like structures are formed in complex 1, 2 and 3, which are connected by azide, chloride and nitrate anions, respectively. In complex 4, one-dimensional left-handed polymer is formed by a μ2-SO4 bridge. The fluorescent and electrochemical properties of these four complexes were investigated. It was found that these three Cu(II) complexes displayed a quenching of fluorescence, while Zn(II) complex exhibited a clear enhanced fluorescence.

Abstract:The complexation of U(VI) with diphenyldithiophosphinic acid (denoted as HL) in acetonitrile was studied by UV–Vis, FT-IR, crystallography and DFT calculations. UV–Vis absorption spectrophotometry implies that three successive complexes, UO 2 L + , UO 2 L 2 , UO 2 L 3 − , form in the solution. Significant ligand to metal charge transfer occurs from soft atom S to U(VI) in all the three complexes. A crystal of UO 2 L 2 complex was successfully synthesized from the solution. In the crystal both the two ligands coordinate to U(VI) in bidentate form. DFT calculations confirm the formation of UO 2 L 3 − complex and help illustrate the structures of all the U(VI) species in the solution.

Abstract:Complexation of UO22+ with dipicolinic acid (DPA) has been investigated in 0.1 M NaClO4. The stability constants (log beta(1) and log beta(2)) for two successive complexes, UO2L and UO2L22- where L2- stands for the deprotonated dipicolinate anion, were determined to be 10.7 +/- 0.1 and 16.3 +/- 0.1 by spectrophotometry. The enthalpies of complexation (Delta H-1 and Delta H-2) were measured to be -(6.9 +/- 0.2) and -(28.9 +/- 0.5) kJ.mol(-1) by microcalorimetry. The entropies of complexation (Delta S-1 and Delta S-2) were calculated accordingly to be (181 +/- 3) and (215 +/- 4) J.K-1.mol(-1). The strong complexation of UO22+ with DPA is driven by positive entropies as well as exothermic enthalpies. The crystal structure of Na2UO2L2(H2O)(8)(s) shows that, in the 1:2 UO22+/DPA complex, the U atom sits at a center of inversion and the two DPA ligands symmetrically coordinate to UO22+ via its equatorial plane in a tridentate mode. The structural information suggests that, due to the conjugated planar structure of DPA with the donor atoms (the pyridine nitrogen and two carboxylate oxygen atoms) arranged at optimal positions to coordinate with UO22+, little energy is required for the preorganization of the ligand, resulting in strong UO22+/DPA complexation.

Abstract:Five novel complexes with two pyridine substituted benzotriazole ligands, 1-(2-pyridyl)benzotriazole (L1) and 1-(4-pyridyl)benzotriazole (L2), [Zn(L-1)(2)Cl-2](1), [{Zn(L-1)(2)Cl-2} (C)(L1)2](2), [Zn(L-2)(2)Cl-2](3), [{Zn(L2)(H2O)(3)(mu(2)-SO4)}center dot H2O] (4), and [{Cd(L2)(H2O)(3)(mu(2)-SO4)}center dot H2O](5) were synthesized. The details of the structures were characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis, revealing that these complexes were assembled together via supramolecular interaction, such as, hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. Abstract:C-functionalized dioxotetraamine 6-(5'-8'-hydroxyquinolinic)methylene-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclo tetradecane-5,7-dione ligand, containing two independent chelating groups, L has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, mass spectra and H-1 NMR spectra. The pH titration has been performed to study the stabilities of L-5-R-1,10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) with proton, copper(II) and cobalt(II). The results show that for Cu2+ and Co2+, 8-hydroxyquinoline is a stronger chelating reagent than dioxotetraamine macrocycles. Using molecular mechanics (MM+) calculation, the stability of ternary mixed system on Co(II)-L-5-substituted- 1,10-phenanthroline-Cu(II) and Cu(II)-L-5-substituted- 1,10-phenanthroline Cu(II), compared with the coordination ability for different coordination sites and for different metal ions [Co(II) and Cu(II)] at same coordination site have been studied.

Studies on the Synthesis and Properties of Bischelating Dioxotetraamine Macrocycle, Its Metal Complexes and Thermodynamic Stability in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:A new route to obtain C-functionalized dioxotetraamine, in which two independent chelating groups 8-quinolinol and dioxotetraamine are included, is described. In addition, two trinuclear metal complexes are synthesized and fully characterized. The thermodynamic properties of the ligand and its respective metal complex were investigated by a potentiometric titration method. Coupled with UV spectra, the difference in affinities for copper ion between dioxotetraamine and 8-quinolinol in the new ligand are investigated and the results show that 8-quinolinol is a stronger donor group than the dioxotetraamine macrocycle in an aqueous solution. Over pH 3~11, 8-quinolinol interacts 100% with the copper ions while dioxotetraamine is only partially coordinated.Key words: macrocycle, dioxotetraamine, 8-quinolinol, copper ion, stability constants.

Abstract:Starting from 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, its alpha-(aminomethyl) pyridine derivative-N, N'-bis(2'-pyridine) methyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2, 9-dimethanamine (L) was synthesized and was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR. The protonation constants of the ligand L;, the stability constants of M (II) L (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) binary complexes have been determined by pH potentiometric titration method at 25 +/- 0.1 degrees C, I = 0.1mol . dm(-3) NaNO3. The probable structures of the corresponding complexes were proposed. The internal cause for larger stability constants was further discussed.

Abstract:New zinc( II) and mercury( II) complexes of 2,20- diamino- 4,40- bis( 1,3- thiazole) ( DABTZ), [ M( DABTZ)( CH3COO)(2)], have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR-, H-1 NMR-,C-13 NMR spectroscopy and studied by thermal analysis and X- ray crystallography. The structural characterization of the [ Zn( DABTZ)( CH3COO)(2)] complex shows the complex to be a monomer and the Zn coordinated by two nitrogen atoms of the "DABTZ" ligand and four oxygen atoms of the acetate anions.

Abstract:A new chelating ligand, 2-(2-(5-tert-butylisoxazol-3-yl)hydrazono)-N-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-3-oxobutanamide (HL), and its four binuclear transition metal complexes, M(2)(L)(2) (micro-OCH(3))(2) [M=Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)], were synthesized using the procedure of diazotization, coupling and metallization. Their structures were postulated based on elemental analysis, (1)H NMR, MALDI-MS, FT-IR spectra and UV-vis electronic absorption spectra. Smooth films of these complexes on K9 glass substrates were prepared using the spin-coating method and their absorption properties were evaluated. The thermal properties of the metal(II) complexes were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Different thermodynamic and kinetic parameters namely activation energy (E*), enthalpy of activation (DeltaH*), entropy of activation (DeltaS*) and free energy change of activation (DeltaG*) are calculated using Coats-Redfern (CR) equation.
Density Functional Study of Uranyl (vi) Amidoxime Complexes

Abstract:Uranyl (VI) amidoxime complexes are investigated using relativistic density functional theory. The equilibrium structures, bond orders, and Mulliken populations of the complexes have been systematically investigated under a generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Comparison of (acet) uranyl amidoxime complexes ([UO2(AO)(n)](2-n), 1 <= n <= 4) with available experimental data shows an excellent agreement. In addition, the U-O(1), U-O(3), C(1)-N(2), and C(3)-N(4) bond lengths of [UO2(CH(3)AO)(4)](2-) are longer than experimental data by about 0.088, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.056 angstrom. The angles of N(3)-O(3)-U, O(2)-N(1)-C(1), N(3)-C(3)-N(4), N(4)-C(3)-C(4), and C(4)-C(3)-N(3) are different from each other, which is due to existing interaction between oxygen in uranyl and hydrogen in amino group. This interaction is found to be intra-molecular hydrogen bond. Studies on the bond orders, Mulliken charges, and Mulliken populations demonstrate that uranyl oxo group functions as hydrogen-bond acceptors and H atoms in ligands act as hydrogen-bond donors forming hydrogen bonds within the complex.
The structure and thermodynamics of calix[n]arene complexes with dipyridines and phenanthroline in aqueous solution studied by microcalorimetry and NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:The complex stability constants (K-S) and thermodynamic parameters (Delta H degrees and T Delta S degrees) for 1: 1 intermolecular complexation of three water-soluble calixarenes, that is, p-sulfonato calix[4]arene (C4AS), p-sulfonato thiacalix[4]arene (TCAS), and p-sulfonato calix[5]arene (C5AS), with dipyridines (4-DPD and 2-DPD) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) have been determined by means of titration microcalorimetry in an acidic buffer solution (pH = 2.0) at 298.15 K, and their binding modes have been investigated by H-1 NMR and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained indicate that 4-DPD, 2-DPD, and Phen are included in the cavity of C5AS with the different patterns, this is, accumbent for 4-DPD, acclivitous for 2-DPD and Phen, while Phen is included upright in the cavity of C4AS. The Ks values decrease with increasing cavity size of host molecules but enhance with extending conjugation degree of guest molecules, and thus C4AS exhibits an exceptionally high Phen/4-DPD selectivity of 22.5. Thermodynamically, the complexation of DPDs/Phen with the water-soluble calixarenes is obviously enthalpy-driven, but the molecular selectivity is mainly governed by the entropy term.

Abstract:Three novel mononuclear complexes, [M-II(L)(2)center dot 2H(2)O], (M = Cu, Ni or Cd; HL = 4-(3,4-dichlorophenyl) piperazine-l-carboxylic acid)were synthesized and structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Molecular docking study preliminarily revealed that complex I had potential urease inhibitory activity. In accordance with the result of calculation, in vitro tests of the inhibitory activities of complexes 1-3 against jack bean urease showed complex 1 (IC50 = 8.17 +/- 0.91 AM) had better inhibitory activities than the positive reference acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) (IC50 = 26.99 1.43 AM), while complexes 2 and 3 showed no inhibitory activities., kinetics study was carried out to explore the mechanism of the inhibiting of the enzyme, and the result indicated that complex 1 was a competitive inhibitor of urease. Albumin binding experiment and in vitro toxicity evaluation of complex I were implemented to explore its Pharmacological properties. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The spectroscopic and electrochemical behavior of the complex of tetraalkylurea ligands with uranyl(VI) and europium(III) in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(tri-fluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Bmim][NTf2]) was studied. As the steric hindrance of the substituent increases, the number of ligands in the [UO2(L)n]2+ complex decreases, however, Eu(III) maintains 8-coordinated complexes [Eu(L)8]3+. The effect of urea ligands on the redox potential of Eu(III) is significantly greater than that of UO22+. Tetrabutylurea can better stabilize the low-valence Eu(II) and improve the redox reversibility of UO22+.

Abstract:A simple aqueous complexing system of UO 2 2+ with F - is selected to systematically illustrate the application of Raman spectroscopy in exploring uranyl(VI) chemistry. Five successive complexes, UO 2 F + , UO 2 F 2 (aq), UO 2 F 3 - , UO 2 F 4 2-, and UO 2 F 5 3- are identified, as well as the formation constants except for the 1:5 species UO 2 F 5 3-. The standard relative molar Raman scattering intensity for each species is obtained by deconvolution of the spectra collected during titrations. Results of relativistic quantum chemical first-principles and ab initio calculations are presented for the complete set of [UO 2 (H 2 O) m F n ] 2-n complexes (n=0-5), both for gasphase as well as for aqueous solution modelling bulk water with the conductor-like screening model. Electronic structure calculations at the Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory level provide accurate geometrical parameters and in particular reveal that k water molecules in the second coordination sphere coordinating to the F - ligands in the resulting [UO 2 (H 2 O) m F n ] 2-n (H 2 O) k complexes need to be treated explicitly in order to obtain vibrational frequencies in very good agreement with experimental data. The thermodynamics and structural information obtained in this work and the developed methodology could be instructive for the future experimental and computational research on the complexation of the uranyl ion.
