Abstract:There is an extensive body of research about chronic pain and treatment in developed countries. In contrast there is a lack of research on this topic in developing countries including China. This study was aimed to estimate the prevalence of chronic pain in different regions of China. Data on pain and its treatment were collected from 9357 participants using questionnaires and telephone-based interviews, from 31 regions of China. Gathered data were then coded into electronic data acquisition system and descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed. Out of 9298 participants, the ratio of chronic pain was 31.54% with the proportion of male having chronic pain (33.86%) was higher than that of female (29.53%). The average age of participants with pain (45.02 +/- 15.07 years) was higher than free-pain participants (36.19 +/- 11.12 years). There were also significant differences between groups in occupation, education levels, and illness history. Proportion of patients with pain duration of 1 year was 12.104%, between 1 and 5 years was 60%, and over 10 years was 10.74%. There were 63.9% of patients with moderate pain and 36.1% with severe pain. About 43.042% of patients thought that pain resulted in sleep disorder, 38.99% thought that it causes anxiety, and about 33% thought depression and irritable bowel was the result of their pain. For the chronic pain, more than half of patients used naprapathy, cupping, and other physical therapies. Up to 2016, the ratio of pain incidence was over 30% in China. The location of pain was focused on back and upper limb. There has been a lack of proper treatment. Patients with pain had obvious economic burden, and their quality of life and psychology were significantly affected.
Association of Body Pain with Somatic and Mental Multimorbidity in Chinese Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Background: Body pain was associated with many individual somatic and mental chronic conditions, but the association of body pain with somatic and mental multimorbidity (SMM) remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association of body pain with the prevalence and onset of SMM and SMM patterns.Methods: Participants aged ≥45 years at baseline (2011) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included. Body pain included pain sites in the head, neck/shoulder, upper limb, torso, and lower limb. Five SMM patterns were categorized by the number of mental condition (MC, depression) and somatic conditions (SC): 1 MC, 1 SC, SC multimorbidity (≥2 SC), mixed multimorbidity (1 MC and 1 SC), and complex multimorbidity (1MC and ≥2 SC). Multinomial logistic regressions were used to link body pain, specific pain sites, and the number of pain sites with SMM patterns in cross-sectional (2011) and longitudinal (2011-2018) analyses.Findings: Body pain was associated with higher odds of SMM and SMM patterns among 10,984 participants in the cross-sectional analysis; it was associated with 1 SC (odds ratio [OR] 1.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10-2.40), SC multimorbidity (OR 2.90, 95% CI 1.94-4.34), mixed multimorbidity (OR 3.27, 95% CI 1.95-5.48), and complex multimorbidity (OR 4.90, 95% CI 2.85-7.92) among 1,914 participants in the longitudinal analysis. Pain in the head, neck/shoulder, torso, and lower limb were associated with increased odds of SMM patterns, including SC multimorbidity, mixed multimorbidity, and complex multimorbidity. Moreover, participants with ≥4 pain sites would experience higher odds of most SMM patterns.Interpretation: Body pain was significantly associated with higher odds of SMM and SMM patterns, and different pain sites were associated with the onset of different SMM patterns, and so do pain site numbers. Prevalence and characteristics of chronic Pain in the Chinese community-dwelling elderly: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Chronic pain adversely affects health and daily life in the elderly. Gaining insight into chronic pain that affects the community-dwelling elderly is crucial for pain management in China, which possesses the largest elderly population in the world. Methods: This is a cross-sectional design study that followed the STROBE Guideline. A randomized cluster sampling method was used to recruit participants in the Sichuan Province from Dec 2018 to May 2019. In addition, face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect socio-demographic data, characteristics and health-seeking behaviors of chronic pain through a self-designed questionnaire. Results: A total of 1381 older adults participated in this study. Among these participants, 791 (57.3%) had chronic pain. Here, prevalence and pain intensity were both found to increase from the 60-69 group to the 70-79 group, which then decreased in the ≥80 group with no significant differences in sex (p > 0.05). The most common pain locations were observed in the legs/feet (53.5%), head (23.6) and abdomen/pelvis (21.1%). Among the elderly suffering from chronic pain, 29.4% sought medical help, 59.2% received medication and 59.7% adopted non-drug therapy. Conclusion: Chronic pain is a common health concern in the Chinese community-dwelling elderly, which possesses different characteristics than other countries' populations. Therefore, easier access to medication assistance and provision of scientific guidance for non-drug therapy may serve as satisfactory approaches in improving pain management.
The Comorbidity of Mental and Physical Disorders with Self-Reported Chronic Back or Neck Pain: Results from the China Mental Health Survey.

Abstract:Background: To investigate mental and physical health comorbidity with chronic back or neck pain in the Chinese population, and assess the level of disability associated with chronic back or neck pain. Methods: Data were derived from a large-scale and nationally representative community survey of adult respondents on mental health disorders in China (n = 28,140). Chronic back or neck pain, other chronic pain conditions and chronic physical conditions were assessed by self-report. Mental disorders were assessed by the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Role disability during the past 30 days was assessed with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHO-DAS-II). Results: The 12-month prevalence of chronic back or neck pain was 10.8%. Most of respondents with chronic back or neck pain (71.2%) reported at least one other comorbid condition, including other chronic pain conditions (53.4%), chronic physical conditions (37.9%), and mental disorders (23.9%). It was found by logistic regression that mood disorders (OR = 3.7, 95%CI:2.8-4.8) showed stronger association with chronic back or neck pain than anxiety disorders and substance disorders. Most common chronic pains and physical conditions were significantly associated with chronic back or neck pain. Chronic back or neck pain was associated with role disability after controlling for demographics and for comorbidities. Physical and mental comorbidities explained 0.7% of the association between chronic back or neck pain and role disability. Conclusions: Chronic back or neck pain and physical-mental comorbidity is very common in China and chronic back or neck pain may increase the likelihood of other physical and mental diseases. This presents a great challenge for both clinical treatment and public health education. We believe that further study needs to be conducted to improve the diagnostic and management skills for comorbidity conditions.
Prevalence and Factors Associated With Body Pain: Results of a Nationally Representative Survey of 9,586 Chinese Adults Aged 60 and Over

Abstract:Background: Pain management has become a critical problem worldwide with the aging population. More than half of older people have experienced pain with different severity. The aim of this research is to identify the characteristics of older people with body pain and the associations between pain and characteristics of demographic, health status, and health services use amongst Chinese seniors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), using follow-up survey data in 2015. The national survey comprised 20,284 women and men aged 45 years or older who completed questionnaires. Data of older people who were asked whether they had troubles with body pain were extracted and analyzed. Multiple logistic regression modeling was used to determine the important indicators (demographic, health status, and health services use) amongst Chinese elderly with pain. Results: Analyses revealed that 32.5% ( n = 9,586) of Chinese people aged over 60 reported having body pain. Pain is positively associated with female gender (OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.80–2.39, p < 0.001), living in non-urban areas (OR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.25–1.77, p < 0.001), having physical disabilities (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.15–1.82, p = 0.002), diagnosed with stomach diseases (OR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.20–1.64, p < 0.001), diagnosed with arthritis (OR = 1.91, 95% CI 1.66–2.20, p < 0.001), self-rating with poor health status (OR = 7.03, 95% CI 5.63–8.78, p < 0.001), self-purchased over-the-counter western medications (OR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.30–1.73, p < 0.001) and self-purchased Chinese herbal medicine (OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.24–1.85, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Body pain is common amongst the Chinese elderly. This research highlights the need for further nationwide studies exclusively focusing on people with pain including the elder population, and provides evidence-based insights for healthcare providers and policy-makers, to improve the quality of pain management. Future research should also pay attention to the importance of health literacy for health outcomes with regard to pain management.

Prevalence and Correlates of Chronic Pain in a Random Population Study of Adults in Chongqing, China

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Numerous studies have documented rates of chronic pain in developed western nations; however, little is known about its prevalence or correlates in rapidly developing countries, where much of the world's population lives. This study was designed to assess the prevalence of chronic pain among adults in Chongqing, China and the correlates of chronicity among respondents with pain and degree of impairment within the subgroup reporting chronic pain.DESIGN:A structured telephone interview was used within a cross-sectional design. Chronic pain was defined as the pain that had persisted for ≥3 months.PARTICIPANTS:Adults from a random sample of 1003 Chongqing households completed a structured telephone interview on pain experiences of themselves and other family members over the past 6 months.RESULTS:Overall, 42.2% of interviewees reported pain for at least 1 day during the past 6 months and 25.8% experienced pain lasting for at least 3 months. The most common complaints were back pain (17.6%), headache (14.2%), joint pain, (10.5%), and abdominal pain (10.4%). Among those who reported pain, correlates of a chronic duration included older age, presence of back pain, heightened impairment, use of Chinese medicine, and greater numer of interventions used for pain management. For interviewees whose pain was chronic, increased functional impairment was related to older age, presence of pain every day, and increased likelihood of consulting physicians and using Chinese medicine to manage pain.CONCLUSIONS:Rates of chronic pain in Chongqing appear to approximate to those reported in western countries. A significant minority of those affected report substantial or severe impairment and are more likely than less impaired cohorts to have sought medical interventions to manage pain.
Prevalence and influencing factors of chronic pain in middle-aged and older adults in China: results of a nationally representative survey

Abstract:Background With China's rapidly aging population, chronic pain has become a major public health issue. This article aims at determining associations between chronic pain and multiple factors, including demographic characteristics, health status, and health service utilization of middle-aged and older adults in China. Methods We selected all the 19,829 respondents who were over 45 years old from the China Health and Aging Tracking Survey 2018 (CHARLS) as our study population. The key information in terms of the body pain, demographic characteristics, health status, behaviors and health services use was extracted and analyzed. Logistic regression model was used to determine the influencing factors of chronic pain. Results Analysis revealed that 60.02% (9,257) of the data from this survey reported physical pain, with pain sites concentrated at the head (40.9%), lower back (62.2%) and knees (47.2%). Pain was positively associated with influencing factors for pain: being a female (OR = 2.10, 95% CI 1.90–2.33, p < 0.001), living in a western region (OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.16–1.41, p < 0.001), living in a rural area (OR = 1.14, 95% CI 1.06–1.23, p < 0.001), smoked (OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.14–1.38, p < 0.001), drank alcohol (OR = 1.16, 95% CI 1.06–1.26, p = 0.001), and had poor self-rated health (OR = 6.84, 95% CI 5.41–8.65, p < 0.001), had hearing problems (OR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.11–3.37, p < 0.001), were depressed (OR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.03–1.29, p < 0.001), had arthritis (OR = 2.21, 95% CI 2.02–2.41, p < 0.001), stomach disorders (OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.55–1.85, p < 0.001), visited a Western medicine hospital (OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.10–1.50, p = 0.002), and visits to other medical institutions (OR = 1.42, 95%CI 1.22–1.64, p < 0.001). On the other side, as a protective factor for pain, having nighttime sleep ≥7 h (OR = 0.74, 95%CI 0.68–0.80, p < 0.001) was negatively associated with pain. Conclusion Physical pain affects many older adults. Women, regional, rural residents, smokers, alcohol drinkers, people with poor self-rated health, those having <7 h of sleep at night, those with hearing problems, depression, arthritis, stomach disorders, and people who visits Western hospitals or other medical institutions are at greater risk for pain and deserve the attention of health care providers and policy makers to focus on pain prevention and management in middle-aged and older adults. Future research studies should also focus on the impact of health literacy on pain prevention and management outcomes.

Abstract:Background: Chronic pain is a common disease; about 20% of people worldwide suffer from it. While compared with the research on the prevalence and management of chronic pain in developed countries, there is a relative lack of research in this field in China. This research aims to construct the China Pain Health Index (CPHI) to evaluate the current status of the prevalence and management of chronic pain in the Chinese population. Methods: The dimensions and indicators of CPHI were determined through literature review, Delphi method, and analytical hierarchy process model, and the original values of relevant indicators were obtained by collecting multi-source data. National and sub-provincial scores of CPHI (2020) were calculated by co-directional transformation, standardization, percentage transformation of the aggregate, and weighted summation. Results: The highest CPHI score in 2020 is Beijing, and the lowest is Tibet. The top five provinces are Beijing (67.64 points), Shanghai (67.04 points), Zhejiang (65.74 points), Shandong (61.16 points), and Tianjin (59.99 points). The last five provinces are Tibet (33.10 points), Ningxia (37.24 points), Guizhou (39.85 points), Xinjiang (39.92 points), and Hainan (40.38 points). The prevalence of chronic pain is severe in Heilongjiang, Chongqing, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Fujian. Guizhou, Hainan, Xinjiang, Beijing, and Guangdong display a high burden of chronic pain. The five provinces of Guangdong, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang have better treatment for chronic pain, while Tibet, Qinghai, Jilin, Ningxia, and Xinjiang have a lower quality of treatment. Beijing, Shanghai, Qinghai, Guangxi, and Hunan have relatively good development of chronic pain disciplines, while Tibet, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Guizhou are relatively poor. Conclusion: The economically developed provinces in China have higher CPHI scores, while economically underdeveloped areas have lower scores. The current pain diagnosis and treatment situation in economically developed regions is relatively good, while that in financially underdeveloped areas is rather poor. According to the variations in the prevalence and management of chronic pain among populations in different provinces in China, it is necessary to implement chronic pain intervention measures adapted to local conditions.

Abstract:Chronic pain is a prevalent health condition that imposes a significant burden on the global health system. Health literacy is a determinant of the quality of pain management which directly impacts public and individual health. However, the existing health literacy measurements have predominantly focused on medical models stemmed from Western culture and the knowledge of non-Western health models has largely been neglected. This review scopes refereed health literacy publications with regard to traditional Chinese medicine and chronic pain to explore and identify 1) the conceptual basis underlying the development of traditional Chinese medicine health literacy in this area, and 2) measurement tools used in this area and their associated psychometric qualities. Twenty-eight journal articles were assessed and the results showed that most studies’ conceptual frameworks were unable to cover three key health literacy aspects defined by the World Health Organization (access, understand, and apply). Furthermore, the identified health literacy measurement tools generally lacked rigorous psychometric evaluation. Future studies should focus on exploring a comprehensive model that encompasses various health models and developing measurement tools with more culturally representative psychometric assessments.
A cross sectional study between the prevalence of chronic pain and academic pressure in adolescents in China (Shanghai)

Abstract:Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of four types of chronic pain (headache, abdominal pain, neck and shoulder pain (NSP), and low back pain (LBP)) and to explore the relationship between the prevalence of chronic pain and self-reported academic pressure in high school students in Shanghai, China. Method Three thousand students were randomly surveyed on related issues using a questionnaire, and the results were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model. Results Among the 2849 high school students who completed the questionnaire, the overall prevalence rates of headache, abdominal pain, NSP, and LBP were 30.3, 20.9, 32.8, and 41.1 %, respectively. The students in general experienced a heavy burden of learning, a high level of stress, and sleep deprivation, which were closely related to the four types of chronic pain. Conclusion Chronic pain is a common condition in Chinese adolescents and is closely related to self-reported academic pressure.
Association of Body Pain and Chronic Disease: Evidence from a 7-Year Population-Based Study in China

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Evidence is limited on the risk impact of body pain on future chronic disease. The present study aimed to investigate the association between body pain and chronic diseases.METHODS:Data were analyzed using four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study with 17 708 individual respondents aged 45 years and older. The association between body pain and chronic disease was estimated in both a cross-sectional cohort (2011) and a longitudinal cohort (2011-2018). The key outcomes include the incidence of overall and any specific chronic diseases. The associations among different body pain sites and 10 independent chronic disease risks were also assessed.FINDINGS:A total of 17 128 participants in 2011 were included in the cross-sectional cohort and 5611 participants were included in the 2011-2018 longitudinal cohort. Body pain showed an association with overall chronic disease in both the cross-sectional models (OR 2.71, 95% CI 2.47 to 2.98) and longitudinal model (risk ratio (RR) 1.21, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.35). Moreover, body pain was found to be associated with an increased risk of chronic respiratory disease (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.92), heart disease (RR 1.45, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.89), kidney disease (RR 1.83, 95% CI 1.28 to 2.6), and digestive disease (RR 1.48, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.88).CONCLUSION:Body pain is associated with major disease and mortality. Future clinical research should be targeted to whether or not improved pain control can mitigate this population-level disease burden.
Pain Prevalence and Pain Management in a Chinese Hospital.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Pain prevalence has been investigation in many developed countries, but integrated information about pain prevalence in Chinese hospitals is lacking. To achieve better pain treatment of hospitalized patients, pain management needs to be investigated. The present descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed to demonstrate the prevalence of pain by comparison with the 4 traditional vital signs, and to investigate pain management in a Chinese teaching hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS Structured and systematic interviews were undertaken by independent researchers. During a patient's hospitalization, the prevalence of pain and the 4 vital signs were recorded. Then, the catalog, severity, causes, duration of pain, and pain management were assessed. RESULTS We found: (1) 63.36% of patients (3248 in total) suffered from pain while in hospital, which was 1.8~2.8 times higher than the prevalence of abnormality of the 4 vital signs. (2) 76% of patients had moderate pain and 21.98% had severe pain. (3) Pain intensity differed among patients with different diseases, but did not differ by demographic factors. (4) Acute and chronic pain were present in 68% and 26% of patients, respectively. In addition, 16% of the patients had neuropathic pain. (5) More than half of the patients with pain refused to receive pain-relief medication because they worried about addiction to opioids and the adverse effects of analgesics. (6) Most medical staff properly understood the 3 ladder analgesics. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of pain is higher than the abnormality of the 4 traditional vital signs in a Chinese hospital. Although pain management has broadly improved, more patient education is necessary.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Five Pain-Related Conditions in Urban China: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional National Health and Wellness Survey

Abstract:Background: While there is an extensive body of research regarding pain and its treatment in developed countries, little research on this topic has been performed in developing countries. This study aimed to investigate the diagnosis, treatment, and treatment satisfaction in individuals with pain in urban China using real-world data. Methods: All respondents from the 2013, 2015, and 2017 China National Health and Wellness Survey were included in the analysis and were classified into diagnosed and undiagnosed groups according to their self-reported physician diagnosis or experience in the past month. The following five categories of pain were analysed: headache, cancer-associated pain, musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, and fibromyalgia. Rates for diagnosis, treatment, and satisfaction with medication were calculated overall and for each pain type. Results: A total of 3802 respondents reported experience of at least one type of pain in the past month. Among those, 61.2% were diagnosed with a pain-related condition, the majority of which (84.0%) were receiving treatment. For diagnosed respondents taking over-the-counter and/or prescription medication, 70.3% were satisfied with their treatment. Comparing between pain types, the diagnosis rates for cancer-associated pain (32.7%) and fibromyalgia (22.8%) were relatively low, whereas respondents with musculoskeletal pain has the highest diagnosis rate (61.1%). Respondents with cancer-associated pain had the lowest satisfaction (30.0%) with over-the-counter and prescription medication, while respondents with headache (76.2%) had the highest satisfaction rate with such medications. Conclusion: Our study highlights the importance of raising awareness for pain management as well as education and training for healthcare providers and patients.

Abstract:Abstract Chronic pain is a primary health problem in people living with HIV (PWH). However, there is limited research regarding chronic pain among PWH in Chinese health care settings. To investigate biopsychosocial factors of chronic pain severity, we conducted a cross-sectional study in Shenzhen, China. Chronic pain was defined as pain lasting for more than three months. Pain intensity was measured using the numeric rating scale (NRS). Among 123 hospitalized PWH, 78.86% of participants had mild pain and 21.14% had moderate–severe pain. Multiple logistic regression results indicated that PWH in moderate–severe pain group were more likely to have higher levels of interleukin [IL]-6 (OR = 1.034, 95% CI: 1.003–1.066, p = .029) and anxiety (OR = 1.334, 95% CI: 1.071–1.662, p = .010) than those in the mild chronic pain group. Targeted pain management interventions should be explored in clinical practices and future studies regarding PWH with high levels of IL-6 and anxiety.

Abstract:We explore the association of depressive symptoms and chronic pain (arthritis, back or neck pain, headache, or other pain) in a community population of Beijing, China. Two thousand four hundred and sixty nine residents aged 16 years and older were investigated in 2010. Data were collected from face-to-face interviews using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview-3rd version. The presence of chronic pain condition and depressive symptoms were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analysis methods. We found a 12-month prevalence of MDD (Major depressive disorder) at 3.28%. Nearly half (41.01%) of respondents with depressive symptoms also had at least one chronic pain condition, and 64.20% of subjects with MDD (Major depressive disorder) experienced at least one chronic pain. After adjusting for selected demographic variables, it was found by multivariate logistic regression analysis that depressive symptom without MDD was significantly associated with back-or neck pain (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=1.97, 95% CI, 1.34–2.90), headache (AOR=3.17, 95% CI, 1.81–5.58), and other chronic pain (AOR=2.21, 95% CI, 1.07–4.49). MDD was significantly associated with arthritis (AOR=2.23) back or neck pain (AOR=4.17), headache (AOR=3.16), and other chronic pain (AOR=3.51). Multiple types of chronic pain are associated with depressive symptoms and MDD. Future studies are needed to infer causality.

Abstract:We conducted a cross-sectional analysis with 901 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients in China to understand the epidemiological characteristics of PD pain among Chinese patients. In addition, we searched PubMed and the China Hospital Knowledge Database for epidemiological studies of pain and fatigue among PD patients from 1999 to 2011 to understand the prevalence of these symptoms around the world and associated clinical features. The 901 PD cases were recruited from 42 university affiliated hospitals randomly selected from seven provincial capitals across four economic regions of China. We documented motor and non-motor symptoms via clinical examinations and questionnaire surveys. Using logistic regression models, we evaluated factors that were associated with PD pain among these Chinese patients. Of the 901 Chinese patients, 269 (29.9%) had PD-related pain. After adjusting for confounders, only dyskinesias (OR = 2.66) and depression (OR = 2.88) were independently associated with PD pain. The literature search identified a total of 16 eligible studies on PD-pain and 19 on PD fatigue with various tools for symptom assessment. The data suggest a crude prevalence of 33.7% for PD pain in Asia and 79.4% in Northern Europe; the prevalence for PD fatigue was 35.4% in Northern Europe and 59.1% in Western Europe. Interestingly, Northern-European PD patients reported the highest prevalence of pain, but the lowest prevalence of fatigue. These studies suggest that motor complications and depression are likely key predictors for PD pain, while disease severity, depression and sleep disturbance are associated with PD fatigue. More studies with standardized methods would be needed to better understand the prevalence of PD pain and fatigue across various regions of the world.

Abstract:Aims: To measure the prevalence of pain in a community-dwelling population, to gauge the impact of pain on their daily activities, and to describe the measures they used for pain management. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey using a standardized structured questionnaire. Subjects were recruited by random digit dialing sampling with the computer-assisted telephone interviewing system (CATI). Subjects were all residents of Hong Kong at the time of their telephone interviews. Questions were asked about the respondent's sex, age, educational level, occupation, pain location and duration, pain relief methods, and the impact of pain on daily life activities. The responses were automatically recorded by the system. Results: A total of 2,126 respondents were successfully recruited and completed the questionnaire. The response rate was 37.1%. The prevalence of pain was 45.9%. The most common site of pain was the back. Impacts on daily lives were mainly those of mood, mobility, and work performance. Seeking medical advice was the most common relief measure taken to alleviate pain. Both Traditional Chinese medicine and alternative methods were popular. Conclusion: This study provides an estimate of the prevalence of pain in the Chinese community in Hong Kong. Western medicine as well as Chinese and alternative methods is popular.

Abstract:Abstract Pain is a significant burden among different communities, but little is known regarding the epidemiology of pain, particularly with respect to socioeconomic status (SES). The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of body pain and to identify risk factors of pain in middle-aged and older Chinese. The data were extracted from the 2008 Chinese Suboptimal Health Study that consisted of 18,316 Chinese subjects aged 18 to 65 years. Information on SES including occupation and education levels and body pain were collected. A Likert scale was used to evaluate reported body pain. We used the multiple logistic regression model to examine the association between SES and body pain. Overall, 65.34% reported body pain (male: 60.93%; female: 69.73%). After adjustments based on sex, age, education, area of residence, marital status, smoking, drinking and health status, the results showed that students (odds ratio [OR] = 1.51; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.32–1.74) and professionals (OR = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.08–1.37) had significant high risk for body pain, compared with civil servants and farmers (OR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.55–0.75) who significantly lower risk of body pain. The study demonstrates there is a significant negative association between education and reported body pain. The results indicated an association between SES and body pain within the Chinese community. Body pain varied among different Chinese occupation-related population and people with higher education level are less like to have body pain.
