Abstract:Heavy metal ions that leach from various industrial and agricultural processes are simultaneously present in the contaminated soil and water systems. The competitive sorption of these toxic metal ions on the natural soil components and sediments significantly influences their migration, bioavailability and ecotoxicity in the geochemical environment. In this study, the competitive sorption and selectivity order of Cu(II) and Ni(II) on montmorillonite are investigated by combining the batch experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), surface complexation modeling and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). The batch experimental data show that the coexisting Ni(II) exhibits a negligible influence on the sorption behavior of Cu(II), whereas the coexisting Cu(II) reduces the Ni(II) sorption percentage and changes the shape of the Ni(II) sorption isotherm. The sorption species of Cu(II) and Ni(II) on montmorillonite over the acidic and near-neutral pH range are well simulated by the surface complexation modeling. However, this model cannot identify the occurrence of surface nucleation and the co-precipitation processes at a highly alkaline pH. Based on the results of the EPR and XAS analyses, the microstructures of Cu(II) on montmorillonite are identified as the hydrated free Cu(II) ions at pH 5.0, inner-sphere surface complexes at pH 6.0 and the surface dimers/Cu(OH)(2)(s) precipitate at pH 8.0 in the single-solute and the binary-solute systems. For the Ni(II) sorption in the single-solute system, the formed microstructure varies from the hydrated free Ni(II) ions at the pH values of 5.0 and 6.0 to the inner-sphere surface complexes at pH 8.0. For the Ni(II) sorption in the binary-solute system, the coexisting Cu(II) induces the formation of the inner-sphere complexes at pH 6.0. In contrast, Ni(II) is adsorbed on montmorillonite via the formation of Ni phyllosilicate co-precipitate/alpha-Ni(OH)(2)(s) precipitate at pH 8.0. The selective sequence of Cu(II) > Ni(II) for binding on montmorillonite can be ascribed to the differences in the metal properties and the compatibility between the configurations of the montmorillonite binding sites and those of the Cu(II)O-6/Ni(II)O-6 polyhedra. The derived findings in this study could provide significant information for the evaluation of the competitive sorption behaviors at solid/water interfaces and the fate of the coexisting heavy metal ions in multicomponent environmental systems. Sorption of Eu(III) on Montmorillonite and Effects of Carbonate and Phosphate on Its Sorption

Abstract:The environmental behaviours of actinides and fission products have been highly concerned due to their potential risks to human beings after entering the body through inhalation or food chains. The chemical reactions of actinides and fission products at mineral-water interface are the most important factors influencing the sorption, diffusion, migration and other processes of actinides and fission products in natural environments. Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate the chemical behaviours of these radioactive elements or nuclides in terms of environmental safety, especially in the area of safety assessment for geological disposal of high level radioactive wastes. However, the chemical behaviours of nuclides at mineral-water interface are complex and the investigations at a molecular level are challenging. To understand the chemical behaviours of trivalent actinides An(III) in depth, non-radioactive Eu(III) is used as an analogue of An(III) due to their similar ionic sizes and chemical characteristics. In this study, batch sorption experiments and spectroscopic characterization methods were used to study the surface sorption species of Eu(III) on montmorillonite and possible sorption mechanisms. We studied the effects of solid-liquid ratio, contacting time, ionic strength, pH, carbonate and phosphate on Eu(III) sorption on montmorillonite. Our results indicated that the sorption percentage of Eu(III) on montmorillonite was low in the range of pH 3.0 to 6.0, and much higher in the range of pH 7.0 to 10.0. The increase of ionic strength inhibited the sorption of Eu(III) at low pH values, suggesting that the sorption of Eu(III) on montmorillonite was mainly outer-sphere complexation in low pH conditions. Based on the results of fluorescence analysis, we can conclude that the sorption of Eu(III) on montmorillonite is mainly outer-sphere complexation in low pH conditions, inner-sphere complexation in neutral pH conditions and surface induced precipitations in high pH conditions. Furthermore, we studied the sorption behaviours of Eu(III) not only in montmorillonite/Eu(III) binary system but also in montmorillonite/Eu(III)/anion ternary system. Our results indicated that carbonate and phosphate could also influence the sorption of Eu(III). Carbonate did not have an obvious influence on the sorption amount of Eu(III), but it helped to change the surface sorption species of Eu(III) on montmorillonite in high pH conditions. As for phosphate, although the sorption of phosphate onto montmorillonite was very weak, it could significantly enhance the sorption of Eu(III) on montmorillonite. Because there were no reference data about fluorescence lifetime of Eu(III)-phosphate species, we did XPS measurements and phosphate sorption experiments to find out the reason for phosphate enhancing effect. Our results proved that Eu(III) precipitated as EuPO4 on the surface of montmorillonite resulting in the enhancement of Eu(III) sorption. This work is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the chemical behaviours of trivalent actinides An(III) at mineral-water interface and predict the migration of An(III) in the environment.
Multiple Investigations of Aqueous Eu(III)-oxalate Complexes: the Reduction in Coordination Number and Validation of Spectral Linear Correlation.

Abstract:Detailed information on the An(iii)/Ln(iii) complexation properties in solution is essential for separation chemistry and the prediction of their potential for radionuclide migration from nuclear waste repositories into natural aquifers. In the present study, to better reveal and confirm the structural information of [Eu(Ox)x (H2O)h-2x]3-2x (h = 8, 9; x = 0-3) aqueous species, especially the variable coordination number (CN), and explore the validity of the spectral linear correlation between the luminescence lifetime and the residual hydration number in the first coordination sphere of Eu(iii) compounds in solution, a comparison between the spectral results and the theoretical calculations in a wide parametric space in terms of the pH value and oxalate concentration was carried out by combining time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy (TRLS) with speciation modelling and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found direct and clear evidence for the 9-fold to 8-fold coordination number reduction of Eu(iii) atoms upon coordination with more than one oxalate in an aqueous medium, and as well systematically validated the applicability of the spectral linear correlation in an aqueous system (otherwise solid state) involving multiple species with the support of relatively reliable and clear speciation modelling.

Abstract:The peculiar structure of montmorillonite K-10 makes it has cation exchange capability,and it is the base that montmorillonite K-10 can be used to adsorb heavy mental ions.The adsorption properties of montmorillonite K-10 to nickel ion from aqueous solution were studied by liquid scintillation counting.The effects of such reaction conditions as temperature,pH va1ue,amount of montmorillonite and initial nickel concentration on the nickel ion adsorption content of montmorillonite K-10 were researched.The results indicated that higher pH va1ue,more montmorillonite K-10 and higher temperature are favourable for enrichment of nickel ion on the sorbent.Thermodynamic adsorption isotherm model for nickel ion is described by Freundlich equation.
Sorption of Eu(III) on MXene-derived Titanate Structures: the Effect of Nano-Confined Space

Abstract:Developing versatile materials that rapidly and efficiently adsorb radionuclides is an urgent objective for environmental remediation in response to radioactive contamination. Herein, we report the preparation of hierarchical titanate nanostructures (HTNs) by a in situ chemical conversion strategy using a two-dimensional MXene crystal precursor. These HTNs are very stable and can efficiently remove Eu(III) with large sorption capacities, owing to well-maintained layered structures and abundantly exchangeable guest cations. The replacement of sodium or potassium ions with Eu(III) in HTN interlayers has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The extended X-ray sorption fine structure (EXAFS) results, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, further indicate that the sequestration of Eu(III) is realized by forming inner-sphere surface complexes in nano-confined space, evidenced by the decrease of Eu-O distances (R) and coordination numbers (N). The finding of the inner-sphere complexation induced by Ti−O/Ti−OH coordination and confinement effect provides new insights into the interaction mechanism between radionuclides and titanates. Given their extraordinary sorption capacity and facile synthesis under mild conditions, these HTNs are promising candidates for the efficient removal of trivalent lanthanides and actinides from aqueous solutions during the cleanup of radioactive pollution in the environment.

Abstract:We did a kinetic and thermodynamic study of Eu(III) sorption on natural red earth (NRE) in South China as a function of contact time, pH values, ionic strength, humic acid (HA) and temperature under ambient conditions. Linear and nonlinear regression methods in selecting the optimum sorption isotherm were applied on the experimental data. The results suggest that sorption of Eu(III) on NRE can be described by a pseudo-second-order rate equation and strongly dependent on ionic strength at pH<7. Sorption of Eu(III) on NRE increased with increasing temperature, two-parameter and three-parameter isotherms were applied to analysis the equilibrium adsorption data, and a comparison of linear and nonlinear regression methods was done. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH 0 , ΔS 0 and ΔG 0 ) of Eu(III) sorption on NRE at different temperatures were calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms, indicating that the sorption process of Eu(III) was spontaneous. The results showed that the nonlinear method is a better way to obtain the isotherm parameters and the data were in good agreement with the Freundlich isotherm model.
Sequestration and speciation of Eu(iii) on gamma alumina: role of temperature and contact order

Abstract:The speciation, migration and transport of radionuclides in the environment are significantly influenced by their interactions with the natural minerals and humic substances therein. In view of this, the effect of temperature and contact order on the sorption behaviors of trivalent Eu(iii) in the γ-Al2O3/Eu(iii) and γ-Al2O3/HA/Eu(iii) systems was studied using batch experiments and the extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) technique. The endothermic sorption behavior of Eu(iii) in the γ-Al2O3/Eu(iii) systems was induced by the hydrolysis reaction of Eu(iii) in solution and the complexation of Eu(iii) with the γ-Al2O3 surface sites. The endothermic sorption of Eu(iii) in the γ-Al2O3/HA/Eu(iii) systems was attributed to the endothermic binding of HA on γ-Al2O3 and the endothermic complexation between Eu(iii) and HA. EXAFS analysis suggested the formation of type B ternary complexes and their thermodynamic stability improves with rising temperature. The different sorption percentages under various contact orders were closely related to the binding mode of Eu(iii) on the exposed γ-Al2O3 surfaces or the γ-Al2O3/HA colloids. The findings obtained herein are important to evaluate the security of the radioactive waste repository and predict the fate of trivalent actinides (e.g., Am(iii), Cm(iii), Pu(iii), etc.) near the geological repository.
Co-transport and Co-Release of Eu(III) with Bentonite Colloids in Saturated Porous Sand Columns: Controlling Factors and Governing Mechanisms.

Abstract:Accurate prediction of the colloid-driven transport of radionuclides in porous media is critical for the long-term safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal repository. However, the co-transport and corelease process of radionuclides with colloids have not been well documented, the intrinsic mechanisms for colloids-driven retention/transport of radionuclides are still pending for further discussion. Thus the controlling factors and governing mechanisms of co-transport and co-release behavior of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids (BC) were discussed and quantified by combining laboratory-scale column experiments, colloid filtration theory and advection dispersion equation model. The results showed that the role of colloids in facilitating or retarding the Eu(III) transport in porous media varied with cations concentration, pH, and humic acid (HA). The transport of Eu(III) was facilitated by the dispersed colloids under the low ionic strength and high pH conditions, while was impeded by the aggregated colloids cluster. The enhancement of Eu(III) transport was not monotonically risen with the increase of colloids concentration, the most optimized colloids concentration in facilitating Eu(III) transport was approximately 150 mg L-1. HA showed significant promotion on both Eu(III) and colloid transport because of not only its strong Eu(III) complexion ability but also the increased dispersion of HA-coated colloid particles. The HA and BC displayed a synergistic effect on Eu(III) transport, the co-transport occurred by forming the ternary BC-HA-Eu(III) hybrid. The transport patterns could be simulated well with a two-site model that used the advection dispersion equation by reflecting the blocking effect. The retarded Eu(III) on the stationary phase was released and remobilized by the introduction of colloids, or by a transient reduction in cation concentration. The findings are essential for predicting the geological fate and the migration risk of radionuclides in the repository environment.
Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in EuSr2 Ru1-xNbxCu2O8

Abstract:The structural, magnetic and transport properties of EuSr2Ru1-xNbxCu2O8 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5) samples have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistance measurements. It is found that the EuSr2RuCu2 O8 compound exhibits a ferromagnetic order of the Ru moments below the Curie temperature of 130.19 K, and becomes superconducting at a much lower critical temperature of 10 K. The experimental observation that partial substitution of Nb for Ru in this system results in the decrease of the Curie temperature further supports the idea that the ferromagnetic order involves only Ru moments in this compound. We suggest that the decrease of the superconducting critical temperature Tc due to the partial substitution of Nb for Ru originates from the decrease of the carrier concentration in the CuO2 plane because of Nb existing always in the Nb5+ valence state while Ru is in a mixed valence state between Ru4+ and Ru5+. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity is also discussed.

Abstract:The adsorption of five toxic metallic cations, Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II), onto montmorillonite was investigated as a function of pH and ionic strength and a two-site surface complexation model was used to predict the adsorption data. The results showed that in the lower pH range, 3 similar to 6 for Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn, and 3 similar to 4.5 for Pb, the adsorption was greatly affected by ionic strength, while in the higher pH range, the adsorption was not. In the lower pH range, the metallic cations were mainly bound through the formation of outer-sphere surface on the permanently charged basal surface sites (equivalent to X-) while in the higher pH range the adsorption occurred mainly on the variably charged edge sites (equivalent to SOH) through the formation of inner-sphere surface complexes. Acid-base surface constants and metal binding constants for the two sites were optimized using FITEQL. The adsorption affinity of the five metallic cations to the permanently charged sites of montmorillonite was Pb > Cu > Ni approximate to Zn approximate to Cd, while that to the variable charged sites was Pb >> Cu > Zn > Cd > Ni. Abstract:Aluminum (hydr)oxides play an important role in the regulation of the composition of soil/water, sediment/water and other natural water systems. In this study, the interactions among Eu(III), humic acid (HA) and γ-Al 2 O 3 were investigated using a combination of batch and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) techniques. Experiments were performed with varying contact times (2, 15, 60 and 180 d) at a pH of 6.5 for both the binary γ-Al 2 O 3 /Eu(III) and the ternary γ-Al 2 O 3 /HA/Eu(III) systems. In addition, two representative pH values (pH 6.5 for a near-neutral condition and pH 8.5 for an alkalescence condition) were selected to determine the sequestration mechanisms of Eu(III) in the ternary γ-Al 2 O 3 /HA/Eu(III) systems. To verify the specific binding modes and corresponding chemical species, a coordination geometry calculation and a quantitative comparison between the HA binding site concentration and the initial Eu(III) concentration were conducted along with EXAFS data analysis. The microstructure and thermodynamic stability of the formed Eu(III) species were dependent on various environmental parameters. For the binary γ-Al 2 O 3 /Eu(III) systems, quantitative analysis results of EXAFS spectra suggested the presence of two Eu(III) species within a contact time of 15 d. Using a coordination geometry calculation, the R Eu–Al values at ∼3.28 A and ∼3.99 A corresponded to the formation of edge-shared and corner-shared surface complexes, respectively. For samples reacted longer than 15 d, the appearance of an additional Eu–Eu shell at ∼3.50 A was indicative of a structural rearrangement process, leading to the formation of thermodynamically stable surface polynuclear complexes. For the ternary γ-Al 2 O 3 /HA/Eu(III) systems, the EXAFS-derived structural parameters indicated the formation of 1:1 type B ternary complexes and binary corner-shared complexes at pH 6.5 after 2 d. In contrast, the Eu(III) sequestration mechanisms at pH 8.5 were mainly attributed to the formation of 1:2 type A ternary complexes and binary edge-shared complexes. Considering the high proton dissociation constant of strong HA phenolic sites (8.8) and the high metal loading in the present study, the weak HA carboxylic sites are predominantly involved in Eu(III) complexation at pH 6.5 and 8.5. The time-dependent variation tendency of the Eu(III) chemical species formed in the ternary systems may arise from Eu(III)-induced HA agglomeration, binding of Eu(III) ions on stronger HA binding sites and migration of Eu(III) ions to less sterically accessible sites in the HA macromolecule structures. The adsorbed HA could accelerate Eu(III) immobilization at the γ-Al 2 O 3 /water interfaces and could enhance the thermodynamic stability of the formed chemical species. The findings presented in this study could provide important microcosmic information for the prediction of the long-term behaviors of Eu(III) and the relevant Ln/An(III) in a geological environment rich in aluminum hydr(oxides).
Surface complexation of Ca and competitive sorption of divalent cations on montmorillonite under alkaline conditions

Abstract:In the geological disposal system of high-level radioactive and transuranic wastes, an increase in Ca concentration (arising from the alteration of cementitious materials) could affect the retention of other radionuclides due to competitive sorption. Batch sorption experiments were performed to investigate the sorption behavior of Ca and its competition with other divalent cations (Sr and Ni) on the edge sites of Kunipia F montmorillonite under alkaline conditions. Ca sorption increased with pH (when pH > 8) and it was more pronounced under high ionic strength conditions, indicating that Ca formed a surface complexation with the edge sites. The sorption behavior of Sr was similar to that of Ca. Meanwhile, the Ni sorption increased with pH, when this was >6 (for lower pH values than in the case of Ca and Sr), Ni tends to form surface complexes more readily than Ca and Sr. The results of a fitting analysis conducted based on the 2-site protolysis non-electrostatic surface complexation and cation exchange (2SPNE SC/CE) model indicate that Ca and Sr sorb onto the ≡SW2OH sites and Ni sorbs onto the ≡SSOH sites. Additionally, the sorption of the CaOH+ and SrOH+ ionic pair species by cation exchange was implied at pH ~ 12. Competitive sorption experiments were also carried out to evaluate the effect of Ca on the sorption of Sr and Ni. Sr sorption decreased with Ca concentration in the alkaline pH region, whereas Ni sorption was not affected by Ca concentration. Overall, these results indicate that Ca and Sr sorb onto the same sites, while Ca and Ni sorb onto different sites; additionally, the competitive sorption seemed to depend on chemical similarities (e.g., hydrolysis behavior). The sorption model parameters obtained from the single-element batch sorption experiments successfully reproduced the results of the competitive sorption experiments.

Abstract:Sorption of radionuclides on MX-80 bentonite has been studied extensively because of its high sorption capacity and low penetrability. Herein, MX-80 bentonite was characterized by acid-base titration, XRD and FTIR in detail. The sorption of Eu(III) from aqueous solution to MX-80 bentonite was investigated as a function of contact time, solid content, ionic strength and pH under N-2 conditions. The experimental data was performed with the diffuse layer model (DLM) with the aid of FITEQL 3.1 code. The site densities are 2.52 x 10(-4) mol/g for [ XOH] and 1.54 x 10(-4) mol/g for [ YOH], and acidity constants as pK(a) are pK(xo)- = 6.772, pK(yOH2+) = - 1.68, and pK(YO-) = 4.145. The sorption of Eu(III) on MX-80 bentonite consists of YOEu2+ species at low pH values and XOEu(OH)(+) species at high pH values. The sorption isotherms were simulated by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubini-Radushkevich (D-R) models, respectively, and the results indicated that Langmuir model fitted the sorption data better than the Langmuir and D-R models. XAFS technique was applied to characterize the local structural environment of the adsorbed Eu(III), and the results indicated that Eu(III) was bond to 0 atoms at a distance of about 2.43 angstrom as Y/XO-Eu2+ at low pH values.
Adsorption of Eu(III) on Alkalized Ti3C2Tx MXene Studied by Batch Experiment and Mechanism Investigation

Abstract:In order to rapidly remove Eu(III) from aqueous solution, an alkalized two-dimensional titanium carbide, Na-Ti3C2Tx, was successfully prepared by treating inorganic two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene) with NaOH. Adsorption behavior of Eu(III) on Na-Ti3C2Tx was systematically investigated by batch experiments. The results show that the adsorption process is greatly affected by pH and ionic strength of the solution, and reached equilibrium within 5 min. Based on Langmuir model fitting results, the maximum adsorption capacity of Eu(III) on Na-Ti(3)C(2)T(x )was calculated to be 54.05 mg/g at pH 4.0 under 298 K. The thermodynamic results suggested that the adsorption process was a spontaneous and endothermic reaction. The adsorption mechanism was further analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). These data revealed that Na+ ions inside MXene galleries were exchanged by Eu3+ ions and Eu(III) existed dominately in under outer-sphere surface complexation after adsorption under acidic pH conditions, but in inner-sphere surface complexation under near neutral pH conditions. Due to its cost-effective prepatation and excellent sorption performance, Na-Ti(3)C(2)T(x )may be a promising candidate for the efficient removal of trivalent minor actinides and lanthanides from radioactive wastewater.
Theoretical Insights into the Separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) by Hydrophilic Sulfonated Ligands

Abstract:In this work, we focused on the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) with four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands (L) based on the framework of phenanthroline and bipyridine through scalar relativistic density functional theory. We studied the electronic structures of [ML(NO3)3] (M = Am, Eu) complexes and the bonding nature between metal and ligands as well as evaluated the separation selectivity of Am(III)/Eu(III). The tetrasulfonated ligand L2 with a bipyridine framework has the strongest complexing ability for metal ions probably because of the better solubility and flexible skeleton. The disulfonated ligand L1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which is attributed to the covalent difference between the Am–N and Eu–N bonds based on the quantum theory of atoms in the molecule analysis. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands are more selective toward Am(III) over Eu(III). In addition, these hydrophilic sulfonated ligands show better complexing ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity compared to the corresponding hydrophobic nonsulfonated ones. Abstract:The sorption of Eu(III) by Na+-substituted bentonite (Na-bentonite) was investigated as a function of pH and NaNO3 concentration ([NaNO3]0). At pH < ∼7.5, Eu(III) sorption decreased with the increasing [NaNO3]0, whereas at pH > ∼7.5, it remained nearly complete, independent of [NaNO3]0. Our thermodynamic model indicated that the sorption at pH < ∼7.5 occurred via a combination of cation exchange and surface complexation, with the former diminishing as [NaNO3]0 increased. Meanwhile, the sorption at pH > ∼7.5 was primarily due to surface complexation. By X-ray diffraction, the incorporation of hydrated Eu(III) in the interlayers of montmorillonite increased its lattice spacing and crystallinity along the c-axis, where cation exchange was predominant. Also, Eu LIII-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the sample dominated by cation exchange had an absorption edge energy and coordination structure similar to aqueous Eu(III), indicating outersphere complex formation. In other cases, Eu(III) sorption was characterized by innersphere complexation, as indicated by increased covalency and the presence of more pronounced second coordination shells. Importantly, the analysis of dissolved Si and Al suggested that the increased stability of Na-bentonite was likely due to the surface complexation of Eu(III) with aluminol groups at the edges, especially at higher surface coverages. Given its high sorption capacity for Eu(III) and stabilization effect mediated by sorption, Na-bentonite could be serve as an effective backfill material and migration barrier for containing actinides in nuclear waste repositories.
Insight into the adsorption of europium(III) on muscovite and phlogopite: Effects of pH, electrolytes, humic substances and mica structures

Abstract:Europium(III), i.e., Eu(III), is chemically analogous to the trivalent lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An). A good understanding of the adsorption behaviour of Eu(III) on mica group minerals is critical to the safety evaluation of the radioactive contamination. Nevertheless, the structural complexity of micaceous minerals makes it difficult to draw a consistent conclusion in the study of Eu(III) migration. In this work, we contrastively studied Eu(III) adsorption on dioctahedral muscovite and trioctahedral phlogopite as functions of pH, ionic strength, background electrolytes, interaction sequence, and fulvic acid (FA). Batch experiments showed that Eu(III) adsorption on both micas was strongly dependent on pH but quite independent on ionic strength that is determined by Na+. Planar sites are available on both muscovite and phlogopite while interlayer sites only on phlogopite under Na+ and Ca2+ electrolytes (not for K+ and Cs+). An interlayer expansion of phlogopite, as indicated by a newly appeared diffraction peak at ~6° 2-theta, occurred along with Eu(III) adsorption, which was also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the initial Eu(III) concentrations, the concentration ratios between Eu(III) and Cs+, and the reaction sequences of Eu(III)-electrolytes-FA affected both the adsorption behaviour of Eu(III) and reversely the structural alteration of phlogopite. The sequential extraction showed that the adsorbed Eu(III) was mainly in the ion-exchangeable form while the addition of FA could increase the portion of coordinative species. The currently proposed Eu(III) adsorption mechanism can shed new light on predicting the migration of Ln/An(III) at the mica-rich solid-liquid interface on a molecular scale.

Abstract:Knowledge of geochemical behaviors of Eu(III) in natural system is necessary for long-term safety assessment of deep radioactive waste repositories. The mobility or retention of the Eu(III) depends on its adsorption reaction at the mineral/water interface. Here, we studied the Eu(III) adsorption on rutile with batch experiments, zeta-potential analysis and time-resolved fluorescence spectra (TRFS). The results indicate that Eu(III) adsorption is controlled by outer-sphere interaction under acidic conditions, and transforms to inner-sphere interaction under neutral and alkaline conditions. A surface complexation model (SCM) from Rossendorf Expert System for Surface and Sorption Thermodynamics (RES3T) is successfully applied to describe the adsorption behavior of Eu(III) at the rutile/water interface with CHEMSPEC code. The good predictions indicate that the current SCM from RES3T could indeed be used for the estimation of Eu(III) adsorption on rutile surface, though it is not sensitive to the Eu(III) loadings. Overall, this work may provide valuable information on adsorption mechanism of Eu(III) at the rutile/water interface and help us understand the geochemical behaviors of Eu(III) in natural environments.
The Competitive Adsorption of Chromate and Sulfate on Ni-Substituted Magnetite Surfaces: an ATR-FTIR Study

Abstract:With similar chemical properties and geometrical configurations, sulfate and chromate display interesting competitive adsorption on mineral surfaces. Although such issues have been investigated on several Fe (hydr)oxide surfaces, e.g., ferrihydrite, goethite and hematite, the competitive adsorption on magnetite surfaces and the constraint mechanism have seldom been studied. This impedes the understanding of the transfer and fate of chromate and sulfate on magnetite surfaces, as magnetite is not only a useful adsorbent but also an efficient reductant to decrease the mobility and toxicity of chromium. In the present study, the geometries of the competitive adsorption of chromate and sulfate on Ni-substituted magnetite surfaces over a pH range of 4–9 were investigated using in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation analysis. In individual adsorption, nonprotonated monodentate mononuclear (NMM) complexes dominated chromate adsorption, accompanied by a few bidentate binuclear (BB) complexes. For sulfate, NMM complexes and outer-sphere (OS) species predominated under acidic and neutral–alkaline conditions, respectively. The above variation in adsorption configuration resulted in the different adsorption competitiveness between chromate and sulfate at different pH values. Specifically, the NMM complexes of chromate were substituted by NMM sulfate complexes under acidic conditions and vice versa. However, under neutral and alkaline conditions, the OS species of sulfate scarcely affected the adsorption of chromate. The adsorption affinity of chromate and sulfate on Ni-substituted magnetite increased in the following order: OS complex (sulfate) < NMM complexes (chromate) < NMM complexes (sulfate).
