Abstract:An attosecond pulse is used to create a wavepacket in molecular nitrogen composed of multiple bound and autoionizing electronic states of Rydberg and valence character between 12 and 16.7 eV. A time-delayed, few-femtosecond, near-infrared (NIR) laser pulse is used to couple individual states in the wavepacket to multiple neighboring states, resulting in time-dependent modification of the absorption spectrum and revealing both individual quantum beats of the wavepacket and the energy shifts of the excited states in the presence of the strong NIR field. The broad bandwidth of the attosecond pulse and high energy resolution of the extreme ultraviolet spectrometer allow the simultaneous observation of time-dependent dynamics for many individual vibrational levels in each electronic state. Quantum beating with periods from 1.3 to 12 fs and transient line shape changes are observed among vibrational levels of a progression of electronically autoionizing Rydberg states leading to the excited A (2)Πu N2(+) ion core. Vibrational levels in the valence b (1)Πu state exhibit 50 fs oscillation periods, revealing superpositions between individual vibrational levels within this state. Comparisons are made to previous studies of electronic wavepackets in atoms that highlight similarities to atomic behavior yet illustrate unique contributions of the diatomic molecular structure to the wavepacket, including the influence of different electronic potentials and vibrational-level-specific electronic dynamics.
Excited-state Vibronic Wave-Packet Dynamics in H-2 Probed by XUV Transient Four-Wave Mixing

Abstract:The complex behavior of a molecular wave packet initiated by an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse is investigated with noncollinear wave mixing spectroscopy. A broadband XUV pulse spanning 12-16 eV launches a wave packet in H-2 comprising a coherent superposition of multiple electronic and vibrational levels. The molecular wave packet evolves freely until a delayed few-cycle optical laser pulse arrives to induce nonlinear signals in the XUV via four-wave mixing (FWM). The angularly resolved FWM signals encode rich energy exchange processes between the optical laser field and the XUV-excited molecule. The noncollinear geometry enables spatial separation of ladder and V-or Lambda-type transitions induced by the optical field. Ladder transitions, in which the energy exchange with the optical field is around 3 eV, appear off axis from the incident XUV beam. Each vibrationally revolved FWM line probes a different part of the wave packet in energy, serving as a promising tool for energetic tomography of molecular wave packets. V-or Lambda-type transitions, in which the energy exchange is well under 1 eV, result in on-axis nonlinear signals. The first-order versus third-order interference of the on-axis signal serves as a mapping tool of the energy flow pathways. Intra-and interelectronic potential energy curve transitions are decisively identified. The current study opens possibilities for accessing complete dynamic information in XUV-excited complex systems.

Abstract:Nuclear and electronic dynamics in a wavepacket comprising bound Rydberg and valence electronic states of nitrogen from 12 to 15eV are investigated using attosecond transient absorption. Vibrational quantum beats with a fundamental period of 50 femtoseconds persist for a picosecond in the b′ 1Σ+u valence state. Multi-state calculations show that these coherences result primarily from near infrared-induced coupling between the inner and outer regions of the b′ 1Σ+u state potential and the dark a″ 1Σ+g state. The excellent spectral and temporal resolution of this technique allows measurement of the anharmonicity of the b′ 1Σ+u potential directly from the observed quantum beats.

Abstract:Attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy using an XUV pulse and two noncollinear near-infrared pulses is employed to measure Rydberg wavepacket dynamics resulting from extreme ultraviolet excitation of a 3s electron in atomic argon into a series of autoionizing 3s-1np Rydberg states around 29 eV. The emitted signals from individual Rydberg states exhibit oscillatory structure and persist well beyond the expected lifetimes of the emitting Rydberg states. These results reflect substantial contributions of longer-lived Rydberg states to the four wave mixing emission signals of each individually detected state. A wavepacket decomposition analysis reveals that coherent amplitude transfer occurs predominantly from photoexcited 3s-1(n+1)p states to the observed 3s-1np Rydberg states. The experimental observations are reproduced by time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations using electronic structure and transition moment calculations. The theory highlights that coherent amplitude transfer is driven non-resonantly to the 3s-1np states by the near-infrared light through 3s-1(n+1)s and 3s-1(n-1)d dark states during the four-wave mixing process.

Abstract:We study the evolution of nuclear wave packets launched in molecular nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon monoxide by intense 8-fs infrared pulses. We use velocity map imaging to measure the momentum of the ion fragments when these wave packets are interrogated by a second such pulse after a variable time delay. Both quasibound and dissociative wave packets are observed. For the former, measurements of bound-state oscillations are used to identify the participating states and, in some cases, extract properties of the relevant potential-energy surfaces. Vibrational structure is resolved in both energy and oscillation frequencies for the cations of oxygen and carbon monoxide, displaying the same quantum wave-packet motion in both energy and time domains. In addition, vibrational structure is seen in the dication of carbon monoxide in a situation where the energy resolution by itself is inadequate to resolve the structure.

Abstract:Intense few-to-sub-femtosecond soft x-ray pulses can produce neutral, two-site excited double-core-hole states by promoting two core electrons to the same unoccupied molecular orbital. We theoretically investigate double nitrogen K-edge excitations of nitrous oxide (N2O) with multiconfigurational electronic structure calculations. We show that the second core-excitation energy is reduced with respect to its ground state value. A site-selective double core-excitation mechanism using intense few-femtosecond x-rays is investigated using time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) simulations. The subsequent two-step Auger-Meitner and two-electrons-one-electron decay spectra of the double core-excited states are analyzed using a Mulliken population analysis of the multiconfirational wavefunctions. The change in the electron emission lineshape between the absorption of 1 or 2 photons in the resonant core-excitation is predicted by combining this approach with the TDSE simulations. We examine the possibility of resolving the double core-excited states with x-ray pump-probe techniques by calculating the chemical shifts of the core-electron binding energy of the core-excited states and decay products.

Abstract:The capability of generating two intense, femtosecond x-ray pulses with controlled time delay opens the possibility of performing time-resolved experiments for x-ray induced phenomena. We have applied this capability to study the photoinduced dynamics in diatomic molecules. In molecules composed of low-Z elements, \textit{K}-shell ionization creates a core-hole state in which the main decay mode is an Auger process involving two electrons in the valence shell. After Auger decay, the nuclear wavepackets of the transient two-valence-hole states continue evolving on the femtosecond timescale, leading either to separated atomic ions or long-lived quasi-bound states. By using an x-ray pump and an x-ray probe pulse tuned above the \textit{K}-shell ionization threshold of the nitrogen molecule, we are able to observe ion dissociation in progress by measuring the time-dependent kinetic energy releases of different breakup channels. We simulated the measurements on N$_2$ with a molecular dynamics model that accounts for \textit{K}-shell ionization, Auger decay, and the time evolution of the nuclear wavepackets. In addition to explaining the time-dependent feature in the measured kinetic energy release distributions from the dissociative states, the simulation also reveals the contributions of quasi-bound states.

Abstract:Molecular rotational spectroscopy based on strong-field-ionization-induced nitrogen laser is employed to investigate the time evolution of the rotational wave packet composed by a coherent superposition of quantum rotational states created in a field-free molecular alignment. We show that this technique uniquely allows real-time observation of the ultrafast dynamics of the individual rotational states in the rotational wavepacket. Our analysis also shows that there exist two channels of generation of the nitrogen laser, shedding new light on the population inversion mechanism behind the air laser generated by intense femtosecond laser pulses.

Abstract:The autoionization dynamics of the (2P1/2)ns/d Rydberg states in krypton are investigated using wave-mixing signals generated with subfemtosecond XUV pulses and noncollinear, few-cycle NIR pulses. Despite quantum beat oscillations from the XUV-induced coherence, these wave-mixing spectra allow for the simultaneous evaluation of autoionization lifetimes from a series of Rydberg states. Experimentally measured lifetimes for the wave-mixing signals emitting from the (2P1/2)6d/8s, 7d/9s, and 8d/10s resonances compare favorably with lifetimes for the (2P1/2)6d, 7d, and 8d Rydberg states determined from spectral linewidths. Analysis of the quantum beats reveals that the enhancement of wave-mixing pathways leads to reporter state-dependent decays in the wave-mixing signals. The results demonstrate the promise of wave-mixing spectroscopies with subfemtosecond XUV pulses to provide valuable insights into processes governed by electronic dynamics.
Non-perturbative Effects in Attosecond Four-Wave Mixing Spectra

Abstract:We study the nonlinear optical response of argon to a four-wave-mixing pulse sequence consisting of an extreme ultraviolet pulse, an overlapping collinear IR and an non-collinear delayed IR pulses. Absorption of an extreme ultraviolet and an IR photon from the collinear beams excites, sequentially, the $3s^{-1}4p$ bright state and the {$3s^{-1}3d/5s$} dark states. The subsequent absorption of an IR photon from the non-collinear beam results in an angled extreme ultraviolet emission whose variation with delay encodes coupling between autoionizing-states, dark-state lifetimes, and non-perturbative effects. Both our measurements and \emph{ab initio} simulations of the angled four-wave-mixing signal show a double-peak structure in delay dependence, in excellent agreement with each other. We attribute the minimum at the center of the signal to the rapid Rabi cycling, driven by the IR pulse, between dark states and the $3s^{-1}4p$ resonance, which results in the destructive interference in the final transition amplitude.

Abstract:We investigate the interwoven dynamic evolutions of neutral nitrogen molecules together with nitrogen ions created through transient tunnel ionization in an intense laser field. By treating the molecules as open quantum systems, it is found that considering real-time injection of ions and strong couplings among their electronic states, nitrogen molecular ions are primarily populated in the electronically excited states, rather than staying in the ground state as predicted by the well-known tunneling theory. The unexpected result is attributed to sub-cycle switch-on of time-dependent polarization by transient ionization and dynamic Stark shift mediated near-resonant multiphoton transitions. Their combined contribution also causes that the vibrational distribution of N$_2^+$ does not comply with Franck-Condon principle. These findings corroborate the mechanism of nitrogen molecular ion lasing and are likely to be universal. The present work opens a new route to explore the important role of transient ionization injection in strong-field induced non-equilibrium dynamics.
Revealing and controlling nuclear dynamics following inner-shell photoionization of N2

Abstract:In this work, we apply the Monte Carlo wave packet method to study the ultrafast nuclear dynamics following inner-shell photoionization of N2 exposed to an ultrashort intense X-ray pulse. The photon energy of the X-ray pulse is large enough to remove a 1s electron from the N atom in N2. The intermediate state in N+2 is highly excited so that autoionization takes place from this state to the dissociative or non-dissociative electronic states of ungerade and gerade symmetries in N++2. The possible vibrational resonances allowed by the non-dissociative states prevents a direct extraction of the nuclear kinetic release (KER) spectrum from the nuclear wave packets in N++2. Therefore, we propose a hybrid technique by combining the advantages of two energy analysis strategies to obtain the final nuclear KER spectrum of the process. A femtosecond IR probe pulse, which couples the electronic states in N++2 together, is applied to achieve a time-resolved imaging and controlling of the ultrafast dynamics that takes place during double ionization of N2. The influence of the laser parameters including the peak intensity, pulse duration and pump-probe delay, on the nuclear dynamics is also investigated.

Abstract:An approach used for steering the wave packet dynamics and the population transfer between electronic states of the Na2 molecule by a pair of femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated. Four controlling schemes, i.e., four different combinations of time delays (intuitive and counterintuitive sequences) and frequency detunings (positive and negative detunings), are discussed in detail. The light-induced potentials are used to describe the wave packet dynamics and population transfer. The numerical results show that the wave packet excited by femtosecond laser pulses oscillates drastically on 21Πg state with time. The efficiency of controlling population transfer from the X1Σg+to21Πg states of Na2 is nearly 100% for the schemes of the counterintuitive sequence pulses with positive and negative detunings.
N-level Li2 Multiphoton Rotational Wave Packets: Alignment Effects in Resonant Multiphoton Coherent Excitation

Abstract:Using one color ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, the authors create N-level multiphoton rotational wave packets via resonant optical pumping between the A((1)Sigma(u) (+)) and E((1)Sigma(g) (+)) electronically bound states of Li(2) from a single optically state-selected rovibrational state |nu(A)=11, j(A)=28>. The authors find that excitation with a single amplitude shaped femtosecond pulse allows the direct observation of up to a six photon absorption, which generates a coherent superposition of 13 rotational states. The multilevel rotational wave packet is theoretically treated with the multipole moment formalism in order to characterize the experimentally observed time-dependent alignment. In particular, the authors find that the magnetic state distributions measured among coherently excited rotational states generated by the resonant multiphoton pumping reduces the measured coherence amplitudes by as much as 40%.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of wave packets in cesium dimers using a femtosecond-controlled pump-probe technique. We implement configurations with one pulse ( pump) or two pulses ( pump and control) to produce vibrational wave packets on the electronic excited state. The transmission of an additional, variable-delay probe pulse is measured to monitor the time evolution of the wave packets. In the case of the pump-control-probe configuration, a superposition of two independent wave packets is observed. In order to elucidate the observed experimental data, we develop a theory based on the Liouville equation for the density matrix associated with the Franck-Condon factors. Both the numerical and analytical calculations are in good agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the dynamic evolution of electrons in matter is among the most fundamental goals of attosecond science. While the most exotic behaviors can be found in complex systems, fast electron dynamics can be studied at the fundamental level in atomic systems, using moderately intense (≲103 W/cm2) lasers to control the electronic structure in proof-of-principle experiments. Here, we probe the transient changes in the absorption of an isolated attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse by helium atoms in the presence of a delayed, few-cycle near infrared (NIR) laser pulse, which uncovers absorption structures corresponding to laser-induced “virtual” intermediate states in the two-color two-photon (XUV+NIR) and three-photon (XUV+NIR+NIR) absorption process. These previously unobserved absorption structures are modulated on half-cycle (~1.3 fs) and quarter-cycle (~0.6 fs) timescales, resulting from quantum optical interference in the laser-driven atom.
Electronic State Population Dynamics upon Ultrafast Strong Field Ionization and Fragmentation of Molecular Nitrogen

Abstract:Air-lasing from single ionized N$_2^+$ molecules induced by laser filamentation in air has been intensively investigated and the mechanisms responsible for lasing are currently highly debated. We use ultrafast nitrogen K-edge spectroscopy to follow the strong field ionization and fragmentation dynamics of N$_2$ upon interaction with an ultrashort 800 nm laser pulse. Using probe pulses generated by extreme high-order harmonic generation, we observe transitions indicative of the formation of the electronic ground X$^2\Sigma_{g}^{+}$, first excited A$^2\Pi_u$ and second excited B$^2\Sigma^+_u$ states of N$_2^+$ on femtosecond time scales, from which we can quantitatively determine the time-dependent electronic state population distribution dynamics of N$_2^+$. Our results show a remarkably low population of the A$^2\Pi_u$ state, and nearly equal populations of the X$^2\Sigma_{g}^{+}$ and B$^2\Sigma^+_u$ states. In addition, we observe fragmentation of N$_2^+$ into N and N$^+$ on a time scale of several tens of picoseconds that we assign to significant collisional dynamics in the plasma, resulting in dissociative excitation of N$_2^+$.

Abstract:We demonstrate an experimental control of electron localization in deuterium molecular ions created and dissociated by the combined action of an attosecond pulse train and a many-cycle infrared (IR) pulse. The attosecond pulse train is synthesized using both even and odd high order harmonics of the driving IR frequency so that it can strobe the IR field once per IR cycle. An asymmetric ejection of the deuterium ions oscillates with the full IR period when the APT-IR time-delay is scanned. The observed control is due to the creation of a coherent superposition of 1s sigma(g) and 2p sigma(u) states via interference between one-photon and two-photon dissociation channels.
