Abstract:Understanding of catalytic trends is an important prerequisite for providing rational guidance toward the prediction of advanced catalysts as well as the development of original materials design principles. A combined theoretical and experimental study that reveals the periodic trends in electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from Group IV B to Group VIII metal diborides is reported here. Theoretical results demonstrate a general linear relationship between the catalytic activity and d‐band center of metal diboride, meaning that the latter can serve as a descriptor of activity. And theoretical results also predict ruthenium diboride as the most competitive, nonplatinum candidate among metal diborides for HER because this material has a suitable d‐band center and a high density of efficient active sites. Furthermore, the experimental results validate the theoretical activity trends and identify ruthenium diboride as an efficient, pH‐universal electrocatalyst with Pt‐like activity for HER under both acidic and alkaline media. A combined theoretical and experimental study is conducted to reveal the trends in electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on a family of 12 transition metal diborides. The results identify ruthenium diboride as an efficient, pH‐universal electrocatalyst with Pt‐like activity for HER under both acidic and alkaline media.

Theoretical study on hydrogen evolution reaction in transition metal borides

Abstract:Given increasing energy demands and environmental pollution, it is highly desirable to design new hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. In this study, we have performed high throughput screening of transition-metal borides (M 2 B) and Janus counterparts for appealing catalysts. The simulations showcase that the Pd 2 B, PdPtB, PdIrB and PdAuB possess favorable HER performance with the different chemical nature and unique asymmetry structure. To our surprise, PdIrB monolayer has an ultralow hydrogen adsorption free energy (Δ G H ) ranging from 6 to 92 meV for HER reaction, which is even comparable to that of Pt. Our current results may pave the way to design high-performance and easy-accessible HER catalysts.

Simultaneous Interfacial Chemistry and Inner Helmholtz Plane Regulation for Superior Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:In the search for a highly active bulk material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic conditions, we developed a simple solvothermal approach to synthesize Pd2B nanosheets supported on carbon, which achieves a low overpotential for the HER, 15.3 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), a small Tafel slope of 22.5 mV dec(-1) and a high exchange current density (j(0)) of 2.84 mA cm(-2). The atomic structure evolution from Pd to Pd2B catalyst during synthesis is analyzed in detail via experimental and theoretical calculations, which shows that the slow insertion of B is assisted by the layer-by-layer fcc-to-hcp phase transition. Theoretical calculations further revealed that both the subsurface B and the lattice expansion after the hcp lattice formation play a key role to boost the HER activity. Since the Pd2B crystal is the global minimum in the Pd-B alloy, the success in the synthesis and demonstration of high HER activity paves the way towards further exploration of the catalytic performance for this stable metal boride material.
Computational screening of single-atom transition metals on boron-rich boron nitride nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution catalysis in all pH range

Abstract:Low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts are of crucial importance for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Two-dimensional (2D) boron nitride (B-N) compounds formed by the combination of boron and nitrogen atoms of group III and V elements are promising candidates for electrocatalytic HER due to their significant electronic properties. Hence, an electrocatalyst is computer-aided designed with isolated single atoms of 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals supported on 2D B-N (B2N, B5N3, and B7N5) monolayers to fabricate single-atom catalysts (SACs) with an excellent HER performance. Moreover, pH modulations are considered to improve the HER activity theoretically based on first-principles calculation. Our results indicate that B-N compounds surface doping with transition metal atoms can effectively enhance the HER catalytic performance over a wide range of pH. Among all SACs studied, Co-, Ti-, V-, Nb-, Ru-, Tc-, Zr-, and Os-embedded B2N, Sc-, Cr-, Mn-, Ti-, and Y-embedded B5N3, and Sc- and Mn-embedded B7N5 have excellent catalytic activity under acidic conditions, while Mo-, Ir-, Re-, Ta-, and W-embedded B2N and Ti- and Fe-embedded B7N5 show high catalytic activity under alkaline conditions. Interestingly, Hf@B2N and V@B5N3 systems exhibit promising catalytic activity under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. Our work offers cost-effective candidates with a wide pH range HER performance for exploring ideal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal borides (TMBs) are promising catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). While the commercially available TMBs indicate poor HER performance due to powder electrode and low activity sites density, optimizing commercial TMBs for better HER performance is urgent. To break through the challenge, a new strategy is proposed to compose integral bulk electrodes with needle surfaces in TMBs. The integral bulk electrodes in TiB2, ZrB2, and HfB2 are formed under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT), and the nanoneedle morphology is constructed by chemical etching. In the three materials, the smallest overpotential is 346 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in the HCl etched bulk TiB2 electrode, which is about 61.9% higher than commercial TiB2 powder. Better performance arises from better conductivity of the integral bulk electrode, and the nano morphology exposes the edge sides of the structure which have high activity site density. This work is significant for developing new kinds of bulk TMBs catalysts.

Abstract:Cheap, efficient, and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts have long been pursued, owing to their scientific and technological importance. Currently, platinum has been regarded as the benchmarked HER electrocatalyst. Unfortunately, the low abundance and high cost impede its industrial applications. Here, we synthesize bimetallic carbide Mo6Ni6C grown on nickel foam as a HER catalyst, delivering a low overpotential of -51 mV at -10 mA cm(2) in 0.5 M H2SO4 for more than 200 h, which is among the best reported benchmarked HER catalysts in acid to date. On the basis of experimental observations and theoretical modeling, we ascribe the good activity to the proper Gibbs free energy of adsorbed hydrogen (?G(H*)) for the carbon active sites and attribute the stability to the corrosion-stable MoMo bonds in the crystal structure. This work demonstrates the possibility for Mo6Ni6C to be one of the best candidates for HER electrocatalysts in the large-scale electrolysis industry.

Abstract:Molybdenum-based materials have been considered as alternative catalysts to noble metals, such as platinum, for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We have synthesized four binary bulk molybdenum borides Mo2 B, α-MoB, β-MoB, and MoB2 by arc-melting. All four phases were tested for their electrocatalytic activity (linear sweep voltammetry) and stability (cyclic voltammetry) with respect to the HER in acidic conditions. Three of these phases were studied for their HER activity and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for the first time; MoB2 and β-MoB show excellent activity in the same range as the recently reported α-MoB and β-Mo2 C phases, while the molybdenum richest phase Mo2 B show significantly lower HER activity, indicating a strong boron-dependency of these borides for the HER. In addition, MoB2 and β-MoB show long-term cycle stability in acidic solution.
Boron Nanosheet-Supported Rh Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution: A New Territory for the Strong Metal-Support Interaction Effect

Abstract:Abstract High-efficiency electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) offers a promising strategy to address energy and environmental crisis. Platinum is the most effective electrocatalyst for the HER. However, challenging scarcity, valuableness, and poor electrochemical stability still hinder its wide application. Here, we designed an outstanding HER electrocatalyst, highly dispersed rhodium (Rh) nanoparticles with an average diameter of only 3 nm supported on boron (B) nanosheets. The HER catalytic activity is even comparable to that of commercial platinum catalysts, with an overpotential of only 66 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 101 mV in 1 M KOH to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, the catalyst exhibited impressive electrochemical durability during long-term electrochemical processes in acidic and alkaline media, even the simulated seawater environment. Theoretical calculations unraveled that the structure–activity relationship between B(104) crystal plane and Rh(111) crystal plane is beneficial to the release of hydrogen, and surface O plays a vital role in the catalysis process. Our work may gain insights into the development of supported metal catalysts with robust catalytic performance through precise engineering of the strong metal-supported interaction effect.

Abstract:Abstract Tungsten carbides, featured by their Pt-like electronic structure, have long been advocated as potential replacements for the benchmark Pt-group catalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction. However, tungsten-carbide catalysts usually exhibit poor alkaline HER performance because of the sluggish hydrogen desorption behavior and possible corrosion problem of tungsten atoms by the produced hydroxyl intermediates. Herein, we report the synthesis of tungsten atomic clusters anchored on P-doped carbon materials via a thermal-migration strategy using tungsten single atoms as the parent material, which is evidenced to have the most favorable Pt-like electronic structure by in-situ variable-temperature near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Accordingly, tungsten atomic clusters show markedly enhanced alkaline HER activity with an ultralow overpotential of 53 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and a Tafel slope as low as 38 mV/dec. These findings may provide a feasible route towards the rational design of atomic-cluster catalysts with high alkaline hydrogen evolution activity.

Abstract:Multicomponent alloys are promising candidates as catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous solutions owing to the synergic effects between elements. However, due to the vast compositional space they occupy, identifying the optimum catalyst is challenging both computationally and experimentally. In this paper, we propose a scalable high-throughput bubble screening method that is able to identify the multicomponent alloys with the highest catalytic properties. As a demonstration, the optimum compositions with advanced intrinsic catalytic activities in the ternary Ni–Co–Ti and Ni–Fe–Au alloys are identified using this method. The advanced catalytic performance of the optimum Ni56.5Co35Ti8.5 alloy ribbon is further confirmed by the individual electrochemical tests, with an over-potential of about 425 mV at 500 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of about 82 mV dec–1. This is attributed to the low atomic packing density and low electron binding energy. Abstract:Abstract Supported metal catalysts often suffer from rapid degradation under harsh conditions due to material failure and weak metal-support interaction. Here we propose using reductive hydrogenated borophene to in-situ synthesize Pt/B/C catalysts with small sizes (~2.5 nm), high-density dispersion (up to 80 wt% Pt ), and promising stability, originating from forming Pt-B bond which are theoretically ~5× stronger than Pt-C. Based on the Pt/B/C module, a series (~18 kinds) of carbon supported binary, ternary, quaternary, and quinary Pt intermetallic compound nanocatalysts with sub-4 nm size are synthesized. Thanks to the stable intermetallics and strong metal-support interaction, annealing at 1000 °C does not cause those nanoparticles sintering. They also show much improved activity and stability in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction. Therefore, by introducing the boron chemistry, the hydrogenated borophene derived multielement catalysts enable the synergy of small size, high loading, stable anchoring, and flexible compositions, thus demonstrating high versatility toward efficient and durable catalysis.

Crystalline Phase Engineering to Modulate the Interfacial Interaction of the Ruthenium/Molybdenum Carbide for Acidic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru) is an ideal substitute to commercial Pt/C for the acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but it still suffers from undesirable activity due to the strong adsorption free energy of H* (ΔGH*). Herein, we propose crystalline phase engineering by loading Ru clusters on precisely prepared cubic and hexagonal molybdenum carbide (α-MoC/β-Mo2C) supports to modulate the interfacial interactions and achieve high HER activity. Advanced spectroscopies demonstrate that Ru on β-Mo2C shows a lower valence state and withdraws more electrons from the support than that of Ru on α-MoC, indicative of a strong interfacial interaction. Density functional theory reveals that the ΔGH* of Ru/β-Mo2C approaches 0 eV, illuminating an enhancement mechanism at the Ru/β-Mo2C interface. The resultant Ru/β-Mo2C exhibits an encouraging performance in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer with a low cell voltage (1.58 V@ 1.0 A cm-2) and long stability (500 h@ 1.0 A cm-2).
High Intrinsic Catalytic Activity of Boron Nanotubes for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: an Ab Initio Study

Abstract:Exploring efficient electro-catalysts for hydrogen production with earth-rich and non-noble elements is a promising pathway for electrochemical splitting of water. Boron (B) is the fifth element in the periodic table and the complexity of boron coordination number leads to the diversity of boron structure, which has great potential for the development of novel light material for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, the electronic properties, catalytic performance and structural stability of boron nanotubes (BNTs) have been investigated using density functional theory. The calculation results show that the metallicity of BNTs is independent on their chirality and diameters but a strong diameter-dependent catalytic behavior is observed. The BNTs behave potentially high catalytic active for HER with a nearly zero free energy of hydrogen adsorption is presented when their diameters are larger than 11.5 and 13.0 for zigzag and armchair BNTs, respectively. This high catalytic performance is mainly due to the presence of a plenty of active sites on intrinsic nanotubes. This study opens a new way for the developing of non-metal tubular structures as candidates of catalyst for HER.
Intrinsically Synergistic Active Centers Coupled with Surface Metal Doping to Facilitate Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) in acid media usually lose substantial performance in alkaline media primarily due to their inefficiency in the prior step: water dissociation. To circumvent the issue, synergistic catalysts have been designed via combining them with metal (hydro)oxides. While this strategy suffers from high cost and complicated fabrication methods, generating catalytic synergy within a single-phase catalyst is considerably more promising. Herein, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that Ni2P is such a prototypical catalyst whose (001) surface provides not only uniformly distributed single-atom-like but also more importantly intrinsically synergetic active sites to catalyze different elementary steps of alkaline HER Significantly, the unique structural attributes enable surface metal doping to effectively modulate the activity through a bifunctional mechanism and lead to a robust activity descriptor: OH binding strength. We believe that these findings will provide a rational paradigm that advances innovative design of high-performance and economic electrocatalysts for alkaline HER.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an emerging key technology to provide clean, renewable energy. Current state‐of‐the‐art catalysts still rely on expensive and rare noble metals, however, the relatively cheap and abundant transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as exceptionally promising alternatives. Early studies in developing TMD‐based catalysts laid the groundwork in understanding the fundamental catalytically active sites of different TMD phases, enabling a toolbox of physical, chemical, and electronic engineering strategies to improve the HER catalytic activity of TMDs. This report focuses on recent progress in improving the catalytic properties of TMDs toward highly efficient production of H2. Combining theoretical and experimental considerations, a summary of the progress to date is provided and a pathway forward for viable hydrogen evolution from TMD driven catalysis is concluded.

Abstract:The development of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one critical step toward successful transition into a sustainable green energy era. Different from previous design strategies based on single parameter, here the necessary and sufficient conditions are proposed to develop bulk non-noble metal oxides which are generally considered inactive toward HER in alkaline solutions: i) multiple active sites for different reaction intermediates and ii) a short reaction path created by ordered distribution and appropriate numbers of these active sites. Computational studies predict that a synergistic interplay between the ordered oxygen vacancies (at pyramidal high-spin Co3+ sites) and the O 2p ligand holes (OLH; at metallic octahedral intermediate-spin Co4+ sites) in RBaCo2O5.5+ ( = 1/4; R = lanthanides) can produce a near-ideal HER reaction path to adsorb H2O and release H-2, respectively. Experimentally, the as-synthesized (Gd0.5La0.5)BaCo2O5.75 outperforms the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst in many aspects. The proof-of-concept results reveal that the simultaneous possession of ordered oxygen vacancies and an appropriate number of OLH can realize a near-optimal synergistic catalytic effect, which is pivotal for rational design of oxygen-containing materials.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) involves two-step elementary reactions, providing an opportunity to establish dual-site synergistic catalysts. Abstract:Searching for the catalysts with excellent catalytic activity and high chemical stability is the key to achieve large-scale production of hydrogen (H2) through hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Two-dimensional (2D) platinum and palladium dichalcogenides with extraordinary electrical properties have emerged as the potential candidate for HER catalysts. Here, chemical stability, HER electrocatalytic activity, and the origin of improved HER performance of Pt/Pd-based dichalcogenides with single-atom doping (B, C, N, P, Au, Ag, Cu, Co, Fe, Ni, Zn) and vacancies are explored by first-principles calculations. The calculated defect formation energy reveals that most defective structures are thermodynamically stable. Hydrogen evolution performance on basal plane is obviously improved by single-atoms doping and vacancies. Particularly, Zn-doped and Te vacancy PtTe2 have a ΔGH value close to zero. Moreover, defect engineering displays a different performance on HER catalytic activity in sulfur group elements, in order of S < Te < Se in Pd-based chalcogenides, and S < Se < Te in Pt-based chalcogenides. The origin of improved hydrogen evolution performance is revealed by electronic structure and charge transfer. Our findings of the highly activating defective systems provide a theoretical basis for HER applications of platinum and palladium dichalcogenides.
