Abstract:Luminesent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention due to the applications in color display, sensor, and smart materials. However, how to balance the energy distribution between singlet and triplet excited states towards new generation of persistent luminescent MOFs is still a challenging goal. In this work, we report that the construction of cluster-based MOFs can supply an effective way to modulate the fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission based on adjustable π-π stacking, halogen bonding interaction and metal-cluster units. Compared with the pristine ligand (bromoisophthalic acid) with obvious spin-orbit coupling, Zn5 and Zn3 cluster-based MOFs exhibit tunable photoluminescence (such as fluorescence and RTP wavelength, lifetime and quantum yield). The ultralong-lived RTP visualization and temperature-dependent luminescence also provide the Zn5 cluster-based MOF as a new type of anti-counterfeiting and temperature-responsive phosphorescent switch material. Therefore, this work highlights the first example of cluster-based MOFs as ultralong-lived persistent luminescent materials towards tuning singlet and triplet excited states, which may be extended to other similar systems for developing ultralong RTP and delayed fluorescence materials.

Abstract:Long afterglow organic-inorganic hybrid materials have attracted much attention in recent years and are widely used in information security, biological imaging and many other fields. Since up-conversion long-persistence materials are promising for bio-optical imaging due to their high penetration depth and elimination of autofluorescence background, it is highly desirable to combine down-conversion and up-conversion pathways to obtain smart materials with excitation-dependent tunable room-temperature phosphorescence properties. In this work, a metal-organic framework (Zn-DCPS-BIMB), consisting of divalent zinc ions, o-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene and 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenylsulfone, is designed to stabilize triplet excitons, coordinate the emission of different ligands, and endow materials with tunable emission color and up-conversion properties via heavy atoms effects promoting single-triplet orbital coupling and intersystem crossing.
Dynamic multi-color long-afterglow and cold-warm white light through phosphorescence resonance energy transfer in host-guest metal-organic frameworks

Abstract:Dynamic tuning of single-color and multi-color (including white-light) luminescence has attracted much attention for applications in various fields; however, effective systems are still scarcity to date. Herein, we report the construction of host-guest metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) serves as an effective strategy to achieve the excitation- and time-dependent long afterglow and white light emitting, simultaneously. The guest-induced structural distortion modulates the single-triplet state intersystem crossing, promotes ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) in layer-column MOFs, and further boosts multiple exciton generation of triplet states for multi-color ultralong phosphorescence, as indicated by both experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. By further doping of dyes into MOFs, white-light emitting with tunable color temperature can be facilely obtained, which has been further fabricated into white-light light-emitting diode (LED) with color rendering index of 88.4, higher than that of most as-reported pure inorganics and inorganic-organic hybrid systems. Therefore, this work not only describes a host-guest energy transfer route for dynamic tailoring wide range of color-tunable long-afterglow, but also explores the application prospect of new white-light materials with high color rendering and low blue light for promising display and lighting applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or coordination polymers (CPs)-based phosphorescence materials may provide a powerful route for photoelectric and optical recording devices. Herein, two phosphorescence ligands, iso-phthalic acid (IPA) and 2-methylimidazole (MIM), were selected to construct an nonporous CP {Zn(IPA)(MIM)2} (1) with a long-lived phosphorescence lifetime up to 552 ms. By the doping of Eosin Y (EY) dye molecules under an in situ process, the phosphorescence emission color of 1 can be expressly tuned from green to red. The light-harvesting range can also be vastly broadened from the UV to the visible region (550 nm). Photoelectron measurements reveal that the synergistic effect of bias voltage and illumination can greatly restrain electron-hole recombination for the generation of additional free charges.

Abstract:Long-afterglow materials have a broad of applications in optoelectronic devices, sensors, medicine and other fields due to their excellent luminescent properties. The host-guest long-afterglow MOFs material combines the advantages of multi-component characteristics and the stability of MOFs, which improves its luminous performance and expands its other properties. This review introduces the classification, synthesis and application of host-guest MOFs materials with long afterglow. Due to their rigid frames and multi-channel characteristics, MOFs can load common guest materials including rare earth metals, organic dyes, carbon dots, etc. The synthesis methods of loading guest materials into MOFs include solvothermal synthesis, post-encapsulation, post-modification, etc. Those long-afterglow host-guest MOFs have a wide range of applications in the fields of sensors, information security and biological imaging.

Highly Efficient and Direct Ultralong All-Phosphorescence from Metal-Organic Framework Photonic Glasses

Abstract:Realizing efficient and ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is highly desirable but remains a challenge due to the inherent competition between excited state lifetime and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Herein, we report the bottom-up self-assembly of transparent metal-organic framework (MOF) bulk glasses exhibiting direct ultralong all-phosphorescence (lifetime: 630.15 ms) with a PLQY of up to 75 % at ambient conditions. These macroscopic MOF glasses have high Young's modulus and hardness, which provide a rigid environment to reduce non-radiative transitions and boost triplet excitons. Spectral technologies and theoretical calculations demonstrate the photoluminescence of MOF glasses is directly derived from the different triplet excited states, indicating the great capability for color-tunable afterglow emission. We further developed information storage and light-emitting devices based on the efficient and pure RTP of the fabricated MOF photonic glasses.

Abstract:Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention due to their structural tunability and broad range of light-emitting applications. The fluorescence emission of such inorganic-organic hybrids can be significantly tuned by the encapsulation of guest species such as cations, anions, vapors, and dyes. In contrast, the phosphorescence tunability for MOFs has rarely been reported. In this study, an anionic MOF [CdLi(IPA)(2)](Me2NH2) (IPA = isophthalic acid, Me2NH2 = dimethylamine), denoted as AMOF-1, was prepared via a solvothermal method. The as-synthesized MOF exhibited green long-lasting phosphorescence (LLP). The single-crystal structural analysis revealed that the AMOF-1 channels were lined with the p-electron-rich phenyl rings of IPA and were occupied by exchangeable (Me2NH2)(+) guest cations. Based on a facile cation exchange with Mn2+ at different concentrations, the LLP performance of AMOF-1 could be further adjusted across an unusually wide range from blue to violet, white, yellow, orange and red. Furthermore, the reversible changes in the LLP emission indicated that AMOF-1 could also serve as a Cu2+-responsive "on-off" phosphorescent switch. Therefore, this study not only provides a facile way to develop a new type of multi-color LLP materials, but also a strategy to obtain a cation-responsive sensor based on an anionic MOF.

Abstract:A two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) Na2Zn2(C9H3O6)(2)(H2O)(8)center dot 3H(2)O has been synthesized based on the principal of stabilizing organic ligand by crystallization and coordination effect in MOFs. It exhibits unique multi-emissive room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) centered at 455 nm, 482 nm and 525 nm with lifetimes of 92 ms, 97 ms and 351 ms, respectively. Such Zn-based 2D MOF also shows temperature-responsive photoluminescence performance.

Abstract:A macrocyclic molecule 15‐crown‐5 with CdX2 was hydrothermally constructed into metal‐organic linker, which was built into 2D metal‐organic frameworks with metal halide chains that play an external heavy atom effect to achieve long persistent luminescence at room temperature. Near white light emission is achieved in a single component, moreover adjustable phosphorescence is realized with longest visual time of 1‐2 s at ambient conditions. Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with long persistent luminescence (LPL) have raised particular attention among researchers for their potential uses in chemical sensing, optical recording devices, biological imaging, and security systems applications, due to the long‐lived triplet states. In this study, one‐pot method of reaction of appropriate ratio of crown ether ligand (15‐Crown‐5) and metallic salts (CdX2) is utilized to yield three metal halide‐based complexes (namely 15‐5‐CdCl2, 15‐5‐CdBr2, and 15‐5‐CdI2). In solid state, three complexes exhibit nearly standard white light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.28, 0.32), (0.31, 0.39), (0.30, 0.34) at room temperature under UV radiation of 340 nm. Meanwhile, they display the excitation‐dependent room temperature phosphorescence from blue/cyan to green/yellow, especially, 15‐5‐CdCl2 and 15‐5‐CdBr2 exhibit color‐tunable and visible LPL with time‐resolved luminescence lifetime as high as 1–2 s. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the bright LPL of 15‐5‐CdCl2 and 15‐5‐CdBr2 arise from the crown ether ligand and aggregation state induced by halogen‐bond. The thus obtained LPL provides potentials in lighting and displaying devices, optical recording devices, security systems and so on.

Abstract:The long-persistent phosphorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) is a kind of highly desirable but rare material. Here, two new molecular MOF materials, {[Zn(tipa)Cl]center dot NO3 center dot 2DMF}(n) (1) and {[Cd-2(tipa)(2)Cl-4]center dot 6DMF}(n) (2) (tipa = tri(4-imidazolylphenyl)amine), which have 3D twofold interpenetrated (utp) and 2D noninterpenetrated (kgd) topologies, respectively, are reported. They exhibit unexpected long-persistent emissions yet reported: At 77 K, they persist in glowing after stopping the UV irradiation on a timescale up to seconds at 77 K, which can be detected by the naked eye (ca. 2 s). Compounds 1 and 2 also undergo single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations through different routes; a simple anion-exchange route for 1 and a complicated replacement of mu(1)-Cl- ions by DMF molecules accompanying I-3(-) captured in the void for 2.
Strongly Enhanced Long‐Lived Persistent Room Temperature Phosphorescence Based on the Formation of Metal–Organic Hybrids

Abstract:Molecule‐based solid‐state materials with room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are playing an increasingly important role in developing optical sensors, security systems, and biological imaging. However, molecular systems involving long‐lived persistent RTP are still rare to date, which has limited the efficiently luminescent recognition and identification. Herein, it is illustrated that the RTP properties of molecular phosphors can be highly enhanced based on coordination interaction with common metal (such as Zn2+). These molecule–metal hybrids present tunable afterglow phosphorescence by adjusting metal species and stacking fashions of molecular units, with the longest RTP lifetime of 1.3 s. Such long‐lived persistent emission decay is higher than most of currently reported molecule‐based and molecule–metal solid‐state RTP systems. Moreover, the reversible phosphorescence transformation under different pH and heat conditions can be further switched and recycled. This work therefore offers a cost‐effective and facile way to achieve high‐performance RTP metal‐organic hybrid materials, which could serve as promising candidates for noble‐metal‐free and rare‐earth‐free phosphors in illumination and sensor applications.
Unveiling long-lived dual emission in a tetraphenylethylene-based metal–organic framework

Abstract:Incorporating photoactive linkers into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has proved useful in improving photophysical properties of organic chromophores. This is achieved by controlling the local packing of linkers or defect engineering within the MOF. Using these ideas, we demonstrate that a tetraphenylethylene-based MOF exhibits long-lived linker-based emission out to 1 μs—substantially longer than previously reported. The emission contains two independent components whose dynamics branch from early timescales. These findings suggest that charge recombination and distinct defect sites exist and contribute a weak yet detectable emission, and demonstrate how high-sensitivity transient photoluminescence spectroscopy can reveal unexpected populations in nominally crystalline materials.

Abstract:Long-lived emissive materials based on room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are considered as the cornerstone of the development of optical sensors, security systems and solid-state lighting. Nevertheless, molecular systems with these properties are scarce because most of them suffer from aggregation caused quenching emission (ACQ). One approach to address this shortcoming is by inhibiting the molecular motions/vibrations by employing a fixed matrix as afforded by a metal-organic framework (MOF). There, the organic chromophores are confined in a crystalline framework, and the structure-property relationship can be designed to get RTP/TADF. Inspired by this, the present work explores the relation between the linker arrangement and the physicochemical properties of two isochemical MOFs with different crystalline structures. The denser MOF exhibits a long-lived green RTP due to a hyperfine coupling of the linkers. On the other hand, the more porous MOF presents a long-lived temperature-dependent turquoise emission, reflecting the influence of the TADF. Hence, this study provides a huge advance about the potential of MOFs to undergo RTP and TADF emission, and at the same time, demonstrates their potential applicability in a wide range of photonic technologies, including physical and chemical sensing and the first example of a MOF-LED based on RTP-MOFs.

Abstract:It is a great challenge to manufacture room‐temperature blue long afterglow phosphorescent materials adapted to environmental conditions. Herein, an Na‐based metal−organic framework (MOF) was constructed using Na+ and 1H‐1,2,4‐triazole‐3,5‐dicarboxylic acid, which exhibits long‐lived of 378.9 ms, deep blue and room‐temperature phosphorescence, meanwhile possesses the visible blue afterglow for 3~6 seconds after removing excitation light source. The three‐dimensional coordination bonds network provided by Na‐based MOF protects the organic ligands intrinsic hydrogen bond network, resulting in the phosphor lifetime and residual color remaining unchanged in different gas atmospheres. Furthermore, first‐principles time‐dependent density functional theory reveals that the rigid Na‐based MOF structure can limit the rotation and vibration of the room‐temperature phosphorescent organic ligands. This limitation results in the suppression of non‐radiative decay for both singlet and triplet excitons, promotes intersystem crossing, and increases the rate of radiative decay, ultimately achieving long‐lived room‐temperature phosphorescence.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Organic-Doped Inorganic Frameworks Showing Wide-Range and Multicolor Long-Persistent Luminescence

Abstract:Long-persistent luminescence based on purely inorganic and/or organic compounds has recently attracted much attention in a wide variety of fields including illumination, biological imaging, and information safety. However, simultaneously tuning the static and dynamic afterglow performance still presents a challenge. In this work, we put forward a new route of organic-doped inorganic framework to achieve wide-range and multicolor ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Through a facile hydrothermal method, phosphor (tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFTPA)) into the CdCO 3 (or Zn 2 (OH) 2 CO 3 ) host matrix exhibits an excitation-dependent colorful RTP due to the formation of diverse molecular aggregations with multicentral luminescence. The RTP lifetime of the doped organic/inorganic hybrids is greatly enhanced (313 times) compared to the pristine TFTPA. The high RTP quantum yield (43.9%) and good stability guarantee their easy visualization in both ambient and extreme conditions (such as acidic/basic solutions and an oxygen environment). Further codoped inorganic ions (Mn 2+ and Pb 2+ ) afford the hybrid materials with a novel time-resolved tunable afterglow emission, and the excitation-dependent RTP color is highly adjustable from dark blue to red, covering nearly the whole visible spectrum and outperforming the current state-of-the-art RTP materials. Therefore, this work not only describes a combined codoping and multicentral strategy to obtain statically and dynamically tunable long-persistent luminescence but also provides great opportunity for the use of organic-inorganic hybrid materials in multilevel anticounterfeiting and multicolor display applications.

Abstract:The rational designability and chemical tunability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are enabling tributes to efficaciously enhance their room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) performance. A family of stable anionic MOFs, [Zn2(4,5-ImDC)2]M2 (NKU-132, M = (CH3)2NH2 or (CH2CH3)2NH2), featuring significant RTP have been synthesized. By rational cation selection and in-situ replacement from dimethylammonium to diethylammonium, the phosphorescence lifetime is increased from 30.88 to 126.3 ms, along with less sensitivity to air. This work provides an anti-quenching and lifetime tuning example for RTP-MOF materials via facile host-guest chemistry.

Abstract:Ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials provide exciting opportunities for the rational design of persistent luminescence owing to their long-lived excitons. However, conventional rare-earth-based all-inorganic emitters involve high cost and harsh synthesis conditions, and purely organic systems may require complicated synthesis routes and tedious purification. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop a cost-effective and easily manufacturable method for achieving color-tunable RTP-TADF with a long afterglow. Herein, we demonstrate a rational strategy to introduce different anions (Cl-, Br- and OAc- ions) into a Zn-based metal-organic scaffold, which can improve the crystal rigidity and achieve a well-balanced RTP-TADF. Both theoretical and experimental studies have demonstrated that the adjustment of different anions can effectively modulate the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the energy gap of singlet-triplet states (ΔEST) and then tailor the afterglow lifetime. Moreover, we prepared dye-doped metal-organic hybrid glasses with remarkable potential for the color-tunable afterglow. Therefore, this work not only provides a new horizon for modulating crystal and glass states with color/lifetime-tunable persistent luminescence, but also contributes to optical information storage and anti-counterfeiting technology.

Abstract:Development of room-temperature phosphorescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with free heavy metal atoms, high quantum yields, and long lifetime has been the focus of this research area. However, it is rare to develop methods to tune the intrinsic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of MOFs. Herein, it is demonstrated that heavy-atom-free CAU-10 MOFs with color-, lifetime-, and intensity-tunable intrinsic RTP can be achieved by ligand functionalization. By introducing an electron-donating substituent to isophthalic acid, the phosphorescence of CAU-10 MOFs can change from green to yellow with a lifetime ranging from 6.5 to 638 ms at ambient temperature. The strong metal–organic coordination bond and firm anchoring of ligands make the MOFs show superior RTP performance and stability compared to the crystals of pure organic ligands. Density functional theory calculations are applied to interpret the effect of ligand substituents on the luminescence of MOFs and reveal the emission difference among ligand molecules, ligand crystals, and MOFs. This work offers a new strategy to control the phosphorescence of MOFs, and emphasizes the advantages of structural tunability and stability of MOFs in the field of photoluminescence.
