Abstract:Polarized white-light emission was realized from a single copolymer with green and red-light-emitting chromophores incorporated into the blue-light-emitting poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) backbone through intrachain energy transfer. Based on the good thermal stability and nematic liquid crystalline state of the copolymer, the emissive layer spin coated on a rubbed poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) layer was aligned under thermal treatment at a temperature of 180 °C for 5 min. The polarized white-light emission was stable with a Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage coordinates of (0.33, 0.35). A high polarization ratio of up to 24 with a luminance of 419 cd/m2 at voltage of 15 V was achieved.

Abstract:White-light-emitting materials and devices have attracted enormous interest because of their great potential for various lighting applications. We herein describe the light-emitting properties of a series of new difunctional organic molecules of remarkably simple structure consisting of two terminal 4-pyridone push-pull subunits separated by a polymethylene chain. They were found to emit almost "pure" white light as a single organic compound in the solid state, as well as when incorporated in a polymer film. To the best of our knowledge, they are the simplest white-light-emitting organic molecules reported to date.

Abstract:The development of single molecule white light emitters is extremely challenging for pure phosphorescent metal-free system at room temperature. Here we report a single pure organic phosphor, namely 4-chlorobenzoyldibenzothiophene, emitting white room temperature phosphorescence with Commission Internationale de l’Éclair-age coordinates of (0.33, 0.35). Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the white light emission is emerged from dual phosphorescence, which emit from the first and second excited triplet states. We also demonstrate the validity of the strategy to achieve metal-free pure phosphorescent single molecule white light emitters by intrasystem mixing dual room temperature phosphorescence arising from the low- and high-lying triplet states.

Abstract:White-light-emitting single molecules have attracted broad attention because of their great potential for use in flat-panel displays and future light sources. We report a unique molecule of 3-(diphenylamino)-9H-xanthen-9-one (3-DPH-XO), which was found to exhibit bright white-light emission in the solid state caused by the spontaneous formation of a mixture with different polymorphs. Single-crystal analyses demonstrate that noncovalent interactions (such as π···π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and C-H···π interactions) induce different stacking arrangements (polymorphs A, B, and C) with different photophysical properties in a molecular solid. In addition, crystals B and C with the acceptor···acceptor stacking feature show the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics, indicating that appropriate noncovalent interactions could enhance the reverse intersystem crossing process and consequently lead to delayed fluorescence. This discovery provides an effective strategy for the design of new white-light-emitting single molecules as well as TADF materials.

Abstract:A novel white-light-emitting organic molecule, which consists of carbazolyl-and phenothiazinyl-substituted benzophenone (OPC) and exhibits aggregation-induced emission-delayed fluorescence (AIE-DF) and mechanofluorochromic properties was synthesized. The CIE color coordinates of OPC were directly measured with a non-doped powder, which presented white-emission coordinates (0.33, 0.33) at 244 K to 252 K and (0.35, 0.35) at 298 K. The asymmetric donor acceptor-donor' (D-A-D') type of OPC exhibits an accurate inherited relationship from dicarbazolyl-substituted benzophenone (O2C, D-A-D) and diphenothiazinyl-substituted benzophenone (O2P, D'-A-D'). By purposefully selecting the two parent molecules, that is, O2C (blue) and O2P (yellow), the white-light emission of OPC can be achieved in a single molecule. This finding provides a feasible molecular strategy to design new AIE-DF white-light-emitting organic molecules.

Abstract:Luminophores with tunable emission properties are appealing due to various applications. Among those properties, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been attracting enormous research interests. Herein, we synthesized a 9,9'-spirobifluorene based homo-conjugated molecule 1, which connects a diphenylamino moiety as electron donor and a naphthalimide group as electron acceptor via 2,2'-positions of spirofluorene. Compound 1 displays dual emission behaviour with both blue and orange fluorescence. The one orange fluorescence around 555 nmshows sensitivity to oxygen and a prolonged lifetime of 284 ns in degassed toluene. Such characteristics imply TADF nature for this emission from a charge-transfer excited state. The other emission at 440 nm with blue colour displayed resistance to oxygen quenching and a normal fluorescence lifetime of 1.5 ns. Compared with control molecule, this emission band is assigned as conventional fluorescence from a localized excited state. In addition, dual emission property allows molecule 1 to be modulated to emit white photoluminescence in thin film with a CIE color coordinate of (0.25, 0.33).
Excitation-Dependent Triplet-Singlet Intensity from Organic Host-Guest Materials: Tunable Color, White-Light Emission, and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Abstract:A series of organic host-guest materials with multifunctional luminescence were constructed. Four isoquinoline derivatives were used as the guests, and benzophenone was used as the host. The doped system exhibited excellent dual emission with cyan fluorescence and orange-yellow room-temperature phosphorescence, and the dual emission could be combined into almost pure white-light emission. Importantly, the relative intensity of the fluorescence-phosphorescence could be adjusted by changing the excitation wavelength, with the phosphorescence intensity being significantly higher than the fluorescence intensity under shorter excitation wavelengths and vice versa under longer excitation wavelengths. Therefore, three-color emission switching among cyan, white, and orange could be achieved by simply adjusting the excitation wavelength. The results of experimental and theoretical calculations indicated that the excitation-dependent emission colors were caused by different transfer paths for excitons under different excitation wavelengths. These materials with multifunctional luminescence could be used as writable inks for advanced anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Developing a single emitter with dual emission or multi‐emission, termed as single‐molecule white‐light emission (SMWLE), has attracted more and more attention. However, the exploration of fluorescence‐RTP SMWLE is very challenging because purely organic RTP molecule is still at the preliminary stage. Here, a robust white‐light emitting is successfully achieved through dual‐mode phosphorescence by incorporating intramolecular electron coupling. A series of carbazole–nicotinamide isomers are designed and synthesized. Dyads 2–4 show efficient room‐temperature persistent phosphorescence with the highest quantum yield of 21.3% and the longest lifetime of 846 ms. In particular, dyad 4 manifests robust white‐light emitting property with a rather high phosphorescence quantum yield of 11.2%. The calculated CIEx,y chromaticity coordinate is (0.26, 0.28) in the white‐light zone. Interestingly, dyad 4 is sensitive to mechanical force and acid, demonstrating the multi‐state stimuli‐responsive properties. It is found that the force‐induced phase transition from crystalline to amorphous drives the dual‐mode mechanochromism (fluorescence shift and phosphorescence on–off), and the protonation of pyridine units results in acidichromism. Moreover, a RTP self‐enhancement process is observed. Dyad 4 is a considerably rare white‐light‐emitting purely organic RTP molecule with multi‐responsive luminescence via dual‐mode phosphorescence.

Abstract:This study reveals the mechanism of the dual-emission properties for asymmetrical diphenylsulfone and diphenylketone derivatives. A series of asymmetrical diphenylketone and diphenylsulfone derivatives with dualemission properties are designed and synthesized. By single crystal structure analyses, various photophysical studies, and 2D H-1-H-1 NOSEY NMR studies, the lower energy emission bands in the dual-emission spectra are successfully assigned to hydrogen-bonding-assisted intermolecular charge transfer emission. The emission properties of these compounds can easily be tuned in both solid state and solution state by destroying or strengthening the intermolecular hydrogen bonding. In addition, thermally activated delayed fluorescence characteristics for the intermolecular charge transfer emissions are also observed. The control of the intermolecular and intramolecular charge transfers serves as the basis for the generation of the white-light emission. For compound CPzPO, nearly pure white-light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.31, 0.32) is easily achieved by precipitation from dichloromethane and hexane mixed solvent system. These results clearly give an insight into the dual-emission properties and provide a rational strategy for the design and synthesis of single-component white-light-emitting materials and mechanoresponsive light-emitting materials.
Remarkable mechanochromism and force-induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence enhancement from white-light-emitting organic luminogens with aggregation-induced emission

Abstract:The development of organic materials with white-light emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties in the solid state remain a challenge. Herein, a series of white-light-emitting organic luminogens have been developed and are found to show aggregation-induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF) characteristics. The AIDF emitters present dual-emission consisted of prompt fluorescence and TADF in the crystalline state. Their white-light emissions can be easily tuned by altering the chemical structure and connecting position of the heterocyclic aromatic substituent. Under the stimuli of mechanical force and solvent vapor, the compounds exhibit remarkable and reversible mechanochromism, in which their emission colors are switchable between white and yellow. Upon grinding, they also display linearly tunable luminescence colors, as well as force-induced TADF enhancement, which may be associated with the more compact molecular packing and the restriction of intramolecular motions. The results from time-resolved emission scanning and theoretical calculation suggest that the dual-emission of the AIDF luminogens likely results from the twisted intramolecular charge transfer transitions of the molecules, and the reversible mechanochromism properties probably stem from the interconversion of the quasi-axial and the quasi-equatorial conformations.

Abstract:Two heavy atom-free luminophores (SHB2t and SDB2t) with simple molecular structures have been synthesized via Suzuki coupling reactions in which both display white-light emission with prompt fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the solid state. The impressive RTP of the luminophores is produced by a synergistic effect of the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in addition to the spin-orbit coupling of the sulfonyl oxygen atoms and the moderate singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔEST). These factors facilitate the intersystem crossing (ISC) process to generate triplet excitons in which the molecular conformations become immobilized to effectively suppress radiationless decay. Under the stimuli of mechanical force and solvent vapor, the RTP of SHB2t and SDB2t can be simply turned off and on by breaking and reforming the robust hydrogen bonding, which leads to remarkable and reversible mechanochromism between white and deep-blue emission. Moreover, two different thermochromic processes have been observed for the pristine and ground samples of SDB2t, in which a tricolor switching system between white, deep-blue and blue emission has been successfully achieved through the sequential control of grinding, heating and fuming. From detailed studies we have determined that the mechanism for the thermochromism of SDB2t is correlated with the rearrangement of the white-light emitting molecules to a new packing mode without RTP emission.
Highly Emissive Organic Single‐Molecule White Emitters by Engineering O‐carborane‐based Luminophores

Abstract:The development of organic single-molecule solid-state white emitters holds a great promise for advanced lighting and display applications. Highly emissive single-molecule white emitters were achieved by the design and synthesis of a series of o-carborane-based luminophores. These luminophores are able to induce multiple emissions to directly emit high-purity white light in solid state. By tuning both molecular and aggregate structures, a significantly improved white-light efficiency has been realized (absolute quantum yield 67 %), which is the highest value among the known organic single-molecule white emitters in the solid state. The fine-tuning of the packing modes from H- to J- and cross-stacking aggregates as well as intermolecular hydrogen bonds are successful in one molecular skeleton. These are crucial for highly emissive white-light emission in the solid state.
Achieving White-Light Emission in a Single-Component Polymer with Halogen-Assisted Interaction

Abstract:White-light emitting (WLE) polymers have attracted continuous attention for their promising applications in solid-state lighting, flexible display and related fields. However, achieving dual-emission and pure white-light emission in a single-component polymer is still challenging. In this study, a brominated single-component polymer BrOD-TFB was designed and synthesized, which shows dual-emission and white light emission properties in solution and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in thin films. The dual-emission properties can be tuned by concentration, solvent polarity, and excitation energy. Spectral analyses and theoretical calculations reveal that the origin of the high-energy emission band (HEB) is intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) along the polymer chain, whilst the low-energy emission band (LEB) originates from the excited-state related to the intra-chain and inter-chain C-Br⋯π interactions as demonstrated by the single-crystal structure of the model compound. Appropriate control of the formation and the destruction of the halogen-assisted interactions can initiate white-light emission in the single-component polymer. More interestingly, by dispersing BrOD-TFB (0.1 wt%) in a non-emissive, colorless and transparent polymer, the characteristics of this white-light emission can be fully demonstrated while exhibiting unexpected RTP properties, with photoluminescence quantum efficiency (ΦPL) of up to 23% and CIE coordinates of (0.32, 0.32).

Abstract:White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are of great value in daily life. However, the organic white-emissive single molecules in OLEDs are rare. Herein, we report a group of carbazolyl derivatives containing thiophene (PhCz-S), selenophene (PhCz-Se), and tellurophene (PhCz-Te). Through modulating the chalcogen atom, the promoted intersystem crossing brings room-temperature phosphorescence. Moreover, PhCz-Se exhibits Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.30, 0.29) in OLEDs measured at 4 V, which is the first example of the single-molecule WOLEDs combined with dual emission from singlet and triplet states. Also, PhCz-Te realized WOLEDs in a single emission layer at CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.33). The theoretical and experimental results clearly show that the adjustment of heavy atoms exerts influence on the luminescent properties, which provides a new strategy for designing single-molecule WOLEDs.

Abstract:A technique for inducing white-light emission from organic multiheterostructures is proposed. The configuration of organic multiheterostructure white-light emitting diodes is ITO/TPD(50 nm)/BePP2(5 nm)/TPD(4 nm)/BePP2:rubrene(5 nm)/TPD(4 nm)/Alq3(10 nm)/Al. Triphenyldiamine derivative (TPD) is used as a hole-transporting layer and the potential barrier layers. Blue fluorescent phenylpyridine beryllium (BePP2), orange fluorescent rubrene, and green fluorescent aluminum complex (Alq3) are used as three primary colors. BePP2 and BePP2 doped with rubrene act as the potential wells sandwiched between TPD barrier layers, in which excitons are confined. Alq3 is used as an electron-transporting green-color emitter. The white-light emission spectrum covers a wide range of the visible region, and the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage coordinates of the emitted light are (0.32, 0.38) at 9 V. The maximum brightness and luminous efficiency of this device are 4000 cd/m2 (at 17 V) and 0.4 lm/W, respectively.

Abstract:A strategy to generate an efficient white-light emission has been developed by mixing fluorescence and phosphorescence emission from a single polymer. Fluorene is used as the blue-emissive component, benzothiadiazole (BT) and the iridium complex [(btp)(2)Ir(tmd)] are incorporated into a polyfluorene backbone, respectively, as green- and red-emissive chromophores by Suzuki polycondensation: By changing the contents of BT and [(btp)2Ir(tmd)] in the polymer, the electroluminescence spectrum from a,;, single polymer can be adjusted to achieve white-light emission: A white polymeric light-emitting diode (WPLED) with a structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/PFIrR1G03/CsF/Al shows a maximum external quantum efficiency of 3.7% and the maximum luminous efficiency of 3.9 cd A(-1) at the current density of 1.6 mA cm(-2) with the CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.34). The maximum luminance of, 4180 cd . m(-2) is achieved at the current density of 268 mA . cm(-2) with the CIE coordinates of (0.31, 0.32). The white-light emissions from such polymers are stable in the white-light region at all applied voltages, and the electroluminescence efficiencies decline slightly with the increasing current density, thus indicating that the approach of incorporating singlet and triplet species into the polymer backbone is promising for WPLEDs
