Abstract: Topological superconductor is a timely and frontier topic in condensed matter physics. In superconducting state, an order parameter will be established with the basic or subsidiary symmetry of the crystalline lattice. In doped Bi2Se3 with a basic threefold symmetry, it was predicted however that superconductivity may have a twofold symmetry of odd parity. Here we report the proximity effect induced superconductivity in Bi2Te3 thin film on top of an iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45. By using the quasiparticle interference technique, we demonstrate clear evidence of twofold symmetry of the superconducting gap. The gap minimum is along one of the main crystalline axis following the so-called Delta_4y notation. This is also accompanied by the elongated vortex shape mapped out by the density of states within the superconducting gap, with probably the Majorana mode within the vortex core. Our results reveal the direct evidence of superconductivity with odd parity in Bi2Te3 thin film.
Twofold Symmetry Observed in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$/FeTe Interfacial Superconductor

Abstract:Superconducting pairing symmetry are crucial in understanding the microscopic superconducting mechanism of a superconductor. Here we report the observation of a twofold superconducting gap symmetry in an interfacial superconductor Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$/FeTe, by employing quasiparticle interference (QPI) technique in scanning tunneling microscopy and macroscopic magnetoresistance measurements. The QPI patterns corresponding to energies inside and outside the gap reveal a clear anisotropic superconducting gap. Furthermore, both the in-plane angle-dependent magnetoresistance and in-plane upper critical field exhibit a clear twofold symmetry. This twofold symmetry align with the Te-Te direction in FeTe, which weakens the possible generation by bi-collinear antiferromagnetism order. Our finding provides key information in further understanding of the topological properties in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$/FeTe superconducting system and propels further theoretical interests in the paring mechanism in the system.

Evidence for a Robust Sign-Changing S-Wave Order Parameter in Monolayer Films of Superconducting Fe (Se,te)/bi2te3

Abstract:The Fe-based superconductor Fe (Se,Te) combines non-trivial topology with unconventional superconductivity and may be an ideal platform to realize exotic states such as high-order topological corner modes and Majorana modes. Thin films of Fe (Se,Te) are particularly important for device fabrication and phase sensitive transport measurements. While bulk Fe (Se,Te) has been extensively studied, the nature of the superconducting order parameter in the monolayer limit has not yet been explored. In this work, we study monolayer films of Fe (Se,Te) on Bi2Te3 with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Monolayer Fe (Se,Te)/Bi2Te3 heterostructures host a multigap superconducting state that strongly resembles the bulk. Analysis of the phase-referenced quasiparticle interference signal reveals a sign-changing s-wave order parameter similar to the bulk as well as a unique pattern of sign changes which have not been observed in the bulk. Our work establishes monolayer Fe (Se,Te)/Bi2Te3 as a robust multi-band unconventional superconductor and sets the stage for explorations of non-trivial topology in this highly-tunable system.
Two-dimensional Superconductivity at the Interface of a Bi2Te3/FeTe Heterostructure

Abstract:The realization of superconductivity at the interface between a topological insulator and an iron-chalcogenide compound is highly attractive for exploring several recent theoretical predictions involving these two new classes of materials. Here we report transport measurements on a Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure fabricated via van der Waals epitaxy, which demonstrate superconductivity at the interface, which is induced by the Bi2Te3 epilayer with thickness even down to one quintuple layer, though there is no clear-cut evidence that the observed superconductivity is induced by the topological surface states. The two-dimensional nature of the observed superconductivity with the highest transition temperature around 12 K was verified by the existence of a Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and the diverging ratio of in-plane to out-plane upper critical field on approaching the superconducting transition temperature. With the combination of interface superconductivity and Dirac surface states of Bi2Te3, the heterostructure studied in this work provides a novel platform for realizing Majorana fermions.

Anisotropic magnetic responses of a 2D-superconducting Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure.

Abstract:We have investigated the anisotropic magnetic responses of a 2D-superconducting Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure. Cross-sectional STEM imaging revealed that the excess Fe atoms in the FeTe layer occupy specific interstitial sites. They were found to show strong anisotropic magnetic responses under a magnetic field either perpendicular or parallel to the sample surface. Under perpendicular magnetic fields within 1000 Oe, conventional paramagnetic Meissner effect, superconducting diamagnetism, and anomalous enhancement of magnetization successively occur as the magnetic field increases. In contrast, under parallel magnetic fields, superconducting diamagnetism was not observed explicitly in the magnetization measurements and the anomalous enhancement of magnetization appears only for fields higher than 1000 Oe. The observed strong magnetic anisotropy provides further evidence that the induced superconductivity at the interface of the Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostucture has a 2D nature.
Superconducting four-fold Fe(Te,Se) film on six-fold magnetic MnTe via hybrid symmetry epitaxy

Abstract:Epitaxial Fe(Te,Se) thin films have been grown on various substrates but never been realized on magnetic layers. Here we report the epitaxial growth of four-fold Fe(Te,Se) film on a six-fold antiferromagnetic insulator, MnTe. The Fe(Te,Se)/MnTe heterostructure shows a clear superconducting transition at around 11 K and the critical magnetic field measurement suggests the origin of the superconductivity to be bulk-like. Structural characterizations suggest that the uniaxial lattice match between Fe(Te,Se) and MnTe allows a hybrid symmetry epitaxy mode, which was recently discovered between Fe(Te,Se) and Bi2Te3. Furthermore, Te/Fe flux ratio during deposition of the Fe(Te,Se) layer is found to be critical for its superconductivity. Now that superconducting Fe(Te,Se) can be grown on two related hexagonal platforms, Bi2Te3 and MnTe, this result opens a new possibility of combining topological superconductivity of Fe(Te,Se) with the rich physics in the intrinsic magnetic topological materials (MnTe)n(Bi2Te3)m family.

Abstract:We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the \textit{in situ} prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show a clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the principal crystalline axes of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$. This gap form is consistent with the $\Delta_{4y}$ notation of the topological superconductivity proposed in such systems. Our results provide fruitful information of the possible topological superconductivity induced by the proximity effect in high-temperature superconducting cuprates.

Abstract:The interplay of different electronic phases underlies the physics of unconventional superconductors. One of the most intriguing examples is a high-Tc superconductor FeTe1-xSex: it undergoes both a topological transition, linked to the electronic band inversion, and an electronic nematic phase transition, associated with rotation symmetry breaking, around the same critical composition xc where superconducting Tc peaks. At this regime, nematic fluctuations and symmetry-breaking strain could have an enormous impact, but this is yet to be fully explored. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we study the electronic nematic transition in FeTe1-xSex as a function of composition. Near xc, we reveal the emergence of electronic nematicity in nanoscale regions. Interestingly, we discover that superconductivity is drastically suppressed in areas where static nematic order is the strongest. By analyzing atomic displacement in STM topographs, we find that small anisotropic strain can give rise to these strongly nematic localized regions. Our experiments reveal a tendency of FeTe1-xSex near x 0.45 to form puddles hosting static nematic order, suggestive of nematic fluctuations pinned by structural inhomogeneity, and demonstrate a pronounced effect of anisotropic strain on superconductivity in this regime.

Abstract:We investigated the electron-pairing mechanism in an iron-based superconductor, iron selenide (FeSe), using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Tunneling conductance spectra of stoichiometric FeSe crystalline films in their superconducting state revealed evidence for a gap function with nodal lines. Electron pairing with twofold symmetry was demonstrated by direct imaging of quasiparticle excitations in the vicinity of magnetic vortex cores, Fe adatoms, and Se vacancies. The twofold pairing symmetry was further supported by the observation of striped electronic nanostructures in the slightly Se-doped samples. The anisotropy can be explained in terms of the orbital-dependent reconstruction of electronic structure in FeSe.

Abstract:Topological superconductivity is the quantum condensate of paired electrons with an odd parity of the pairing function. By using a Corbino-shape like electrode configuration, we measure the c-axis resistivity of the recently discovered superconductor Sr x Bi2Se3 with the magnetic field rotating within the basal planes, and find clear evidence of two-fold superconductivity. The Laue diffraction measurements on these samples show that the maximum gap direction is either parallel or perpendicular to the main crystallographic axis. This observation is consistent with the theoretical prediction and strongly suggests that Sr x Bi2Se3 is a topological superconductor.

Abstract:The discovery of two-dimensional superconductivity in Bi 2 Te 3 /FeTe heterostructures provides a new platform for the search of Majorana fermions in condensed matter systems. Since Majorana fermions are expected to reside at the core of the vortices, a close examination of the vortex dynamics in superconducting interface is of paramount importance. Here, we report the robustness of the interfacial superconductivity and 2D vortex dynamics in four as-grown and aged Bi 2 Te 3 /FeTe heterostructure with different Bi 2 Te 3 epilayer thickness (3, 5, 7, 14 nm). After two years’ air exposure, superconductivity remains robust even when the thickness of Bi 2 Te 3 epilayer is down to 3 nm. Meanwhile, a new feature at ~13 K is induced in the aged samples and the high field studies reveal its relevance to superconductivity. The resistance of all as-grown and aged heterostructures, just below the superconducting transition temperature follows the Arrhenius relation, indicating the thermally activated flux flow behavior at the interface of Bi 2 Te 3 and FeTe. Moreover, the activation energy exhibits a logarithmic dependence on the magnetic field, providing a compelling evidence for the 2D vortex dynamics in this novel system. The weak disorder associated with aging-induced Te vacancies is possibly responsible for these observed phenomena.
Superconductivity in Single-quintuple-layer Bi2Te3 Grown on Epitaxial FeTe.

Abstract:How an interfacial superconductivity emerges during the nucleation and epitaxy is of great importance not only for unveiling the physical insights but also for finding a feasible way to tune the superconductivity via interfacial engineering. In this work, we report the nanoscale creation of a robust and relatively homogeneous interfacial superconductivity (TC ≈ 13 K) on the epitaxial FeTe surface, by van der Waals epitaxy of single-quintuple-layer topological insulator Bi2Te3. Our study suggests that the superconductivity in the Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure is generated at the interface and that the superconductivity at the interface does not enhance or weaken with the increase of the Bi2Te3 thickness beyond 1 quintuple layer (QL). The observation of the topological surface states crossing Fermi energy in the Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure with the average Bi2Te3 thickness of about 20 QL provides further evidence that this heterostructure may potentially host Majorana zero modes.
Strong-Coupling Superconductivity Revealed by Scanning Tunneling Microscope in Tetragonal Fes

Abstract:We investigate the electronic properties of the tetragonal FeS superconductor by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. It is found that the typical tunneling spectrum on the top layer of sulfur can be nicely fitted with an anisotropic s wave or a combination of two superconducting components in which one may have a highly anisotropic or nodal-like superconducting gap. The fittings lead to the superconducting gap of about Delta(max) similar to 0.90 meV, which yields a ratio of 2 Delta(max)/k(B)T(c) approximate to 4.65. This value is larger than that of the predicted value 3.53 by the BCS theory in the weak-coupling limit, indicating a strong-coupling superconductivity. Two kinds of defects are observed on the surface, which can be assigned to the defects on the S sites (fourfold image) and Fe sites (dumbbell shape). Impurity-induced resonance states are found only for the defects on the S sites and stay at zero-bias energy.

Abstract:The interface between magnetic material and superconductors has long been predicted to host unconventional superconductivity, such as spin-triplet pairing and topological nontrivial pairing state, particularly when spin-orbital coupling (SOC) is incorporated. To identify these unconventional pairing states, fabricating homogenous heterostructures that contain such various properties are preferred but often challenging. Here, we synthesized a trilayer-type van der Waals heterostructure of MnTe/Bi2Te3/Fe(Te, Se), which combined s-wave superconductivity, thickness-dependent magnetism, and strong SOC. Via low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we observed robust zero-energy states with notably nontrivial properties and an enhanced superconducting gap size on single unit cell (UC) MnTe surface. In contrast, no zero-energy state was observed on 2-UC MnTe. First-principle calculations further suggest that the 1-UC MnTe has large interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a frustrated AFM state, which could promote noncolinear spin textures. It thus provides a promising platform for exploring topological nontrivial superconductivity.

Abstract:The recent discovery of the interfacial superconductivity (SC) of the Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe heterostructure has attracted extensive studies due to its potential as a novel platform for trapping and controlling Majorana fermions. Here we present studies of another topological insulator (TI)/Fe1+yTe heterostructure, Sb2Te3/Fe1+yTe, which also enjoys an interfacial two-dimensional SC. The results of transport measurements support that the reduction of excess Fe concentration of the Fe1+yTe layer not only increases the fluctuation of its antiferromagnetic (AFM) order but also enhances the quality of the SC of this heterostructure system. On the other hand, the interfacial SC of this heterostructure was found to have a wider-ranging TI-layer thickness dependence than that of the Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe heterostructure, which is believed to be attributed to the much higher bulk conductivity of Sb2Te3 that enhances indirect coupling between its top and bottom topological surface states (TSSs). Our results provide the evidence of the interplay among the AFM order, itinerant carries from the TSSs and the induced interfacial SC of the TI/Fe1+yTe heterostructure system.
