Abstract:This study aimed to describe the distribution and characteristics of ocular biometric parameters among a large Chinese population. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 146,748 subjects whose ocular biometric parameters were measured at the ophthalmology clinic of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, and recorded in the hospital database. Ocular biometric parameters, including axial length, anterior chamber depth, corneal keratometry, and keratometric astigmatism, were recorded. Only monocular data for each subject were analyzed to avoid bias. Valid data from 85,770 subjects (43,552 females and 42,218 males) aged 3–114 years were included in this study. The mean axial length, mean anterior chamber depth, average corneal keratometry, and mean keratometric astigmatism were 24.61 mm, 3.30 mm, 43.76 D, and 1.19 D, respectively. The stratification of the ocular parameters by age and gender showed significant inter-gender and inter-age differences. Analysis of a large population of subjects in western China aged 3–114 years showed that the distribution and characteristics of ocular biometric parameters, including axial length, anterior chamber depth, corneal keratometry, and keratometric astigmatism, differed by age and gender. This study is the first to describe ocular biometric parameters in subjects aged > 100 years.

Abstract:Aims. To describe and explore the distribution of ocular biometric parameters of adult cataract patients in rural China.Methods. Three Lifeline Express Hospital Eye-Train missions of Peking University People’s Hospital in China were chosen. 3828 adult cataract patients aged 29 to 88 years with axial length (AL) less than 27.0 mm were enrolled. The ocular biometry including visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure, AL, corneal power (K1 andK2), and corneal endothelial counting (CEC) were collected and analysis. Corneal radius (CR) was calculated from the corneal power.Results. The participants in Zhoukou of these three missions had the worse preoperative VA (p<0.001), the lowestK1 (p<0.001),K2 (p<0.001), andK(p<0.001) and the highestK1-K2(p<0.001), moreover AL/CR more closely to 3.0. The AL,K1-K2, and AL/CR were normally distributed. But theK1,K2,K, and CEC were not normal distributions. ExceptK1, all parameters were positively skewed and peaked.Conclusion. Our study provides normative ocular biometry in a large, representative rural Chinese population. The AL is normally distributed with a positive skew and big kurtosis. The corneal powers are not normal distribution. The corneal astigmatism might have a significant effect on the visual acuity.
Comparison of Ocular Biometry Profiles in Urban and Rural Cataract Candidates in Eastern China

Abstract:Purpose: To compare ocular biometric parameters between urban and rural cataract patients in Shanghai, China. Methods: A study of ocular biometry records from urban and rural hospitals was performed for cataract patients at least 50 years of age. The ocular biometrical parameters, which were measured with partial coherence laser interferometry (IOL Master, Zeiss), were axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), radius of corneal curvature (K, including steep/flat/average K), astigmatism, and axis. Only the right eye record of each patient was analysed. Results: Ocular biometric data included 2839 urban patients (73.15 ± 9.54 years) and 2646 rural patients (73.64 ± 7.32 years). Mean AL, ACD, and K were 24.35 ± 2.34 mm, 3.14 ± 0.58 mm, and 44.38 ± 1.52 D, respectively, in urban patients and 23.58 ± 1.70 mm, 3.08 ± 0.57 mm, and 44.53 ± 1.50 D, respectively, in rural patients. The urban subjects had significantly longer axial lengths (in both univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses) and deeper ACDs (in univariate analysis) than rural subjects (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in steep K, flat K, and average K between the two groups. With-the-rule (WTR) corneal astigmatism was found in 1787 eyes (32.58%), against-the-rule (ATR) corneal astigmatism was found in 2727 eyes (49.72%), and oblique corneal astigmatism was found in 971 eyes (17.70%). Conclusions: We report biometry and astigmatism data in a large cohort of urban and rural adult subjects for the first time. In our study, a short AL, shallow ACD, and axis turned in an ATR direction had higher prevalence rates in the rural subjects. This profile of ocular biometric data and corneal astigmatism will be helpful in planning for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations and astigmatism correction in subjects in different locations.
The analysis of corneal asphericity (Q value) and its related factors of 1,683 Chinese eyes older than 30 years

Abstract:PURPOSE: To determine corneal Q value and its related factors in Chinese subjects older than 30 years.DESIGN: Cross sectional study.METHODS: 1,683 participants (1,683 eyes) from the Handan Eye Study were involved, including 955 female and 728 male with average age of 53.64 years old (range from 30 to 107 years). The corneal Q values of anterior and posterior surfaces were measured at 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0mm aperture diameters using Bausch & Lomb Orbscan IIz (software version 3.12). Age, gender and refractive power were recorded.RESULTS: The average Q values of the anterior surface at 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0mm aperture diameters were -0.28±0.18, -0.28±0.18, and -0.29±0.18, respectively. The average Q value of the anterior surface at the 5.0mm aperture diameter was negatively correlated with age (B = -0.003, p<0.01) and the refractive power (B = -0.013, p = 0.016). The average Q values of the posterior surface at 3.0, 5.0, and 7.0mm were -0.26±0.216, -0.26±0.214, and -0.26±0.215, respectively. The average Q value of the posterior surface at the 5.0mm aperture diameter was positively correlated with age (B = 0.002, p = 0.036) and the refractive power (B = 0.016, p = 0.043).CONCLUSION: The corneal Q value of the elderly Chinese subjects is different from that of previously reported European and American subjects, and the Q value appears to be correlated with age and refractive power.

Abstract:Background Ocular biometry is important for preoperative assessment in cataract and anterior segment surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate normative ocular biometric parameters and their associations in an older Chinese population. Methods This was a cross-sectional observational study. From 2013 to 2014, we recruited inhabitants aged 50 years or older in Guangzhou, China. Among 1,117 participants in the study, data from 1,015 phakic right eyes were used for analyses. Ocular parameters including axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal curvature (K) were measured using an IOL Master. Results The mean AL, ACD, and K were 23.48 mm [95 % confidence interval (CI), 23.40–23.55], 3.03 mm (CI, 3.01–3.05), and 44.20 mm (CI, 44.11–44.29), respectively. A mean reduction in ACD with age was observed ( P = 0.002) in male subjects but not in female subjects ( P = 0.558). Male subjects had significantly longer ALs (23.68 mm versus 23.23 mm, P < 0.001), deeper ACDs (3.13 mm versus 2.95 mm, P < 0.001), and flatter Ks (43.85D versus 44.50 D, P < 0.001) than female subjects. Eyes with axial elongation had a flatter cornea ( r = −0.437, P < 0.001) and a deeper anterior chamber ( r = 0.652, p < 0.001). The ACD was correlated with K ( r = −0.266, P < 0.001). Conclusions These data provide normative values for AL, ACD, and K using the IOL Master for a population in South China. The AL in this Chinese cohort was greater than that observed in the Singaporean Chinese but smaller than that observed in Malaysia and for Caucasians. The Chinese have a shallower ACD than some other racial groups. Age and sex were the most consistent predictors of ocular biometry in the older population from South China.
Anterior and posterior ocular biometry in healthy Chinese subjects: data based on AS-OCT and SS-OCT

Abstract:Background: To measure the anterior and posterior ocular biometric characteristics concurrently and to determine the relationship between the iris and choroid in healthy Chinese subjects. Methods: A total of 148 subjects (270 eyes) were enrolled in this cross-section study. The anterior and posterior ocular biometric characteristics were measured simultaneously by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Results: Compared with male eyes, female eyes had narrower anterior biometric parameters that presented with smaller anterior segment parameters [including anterior chamber depth (ACD), width (ACW), area (ACA), and volume (ACV); (all p<0.001)], narrower anterior chamber angle parameters [including angle opening distance (AOD750), trabecular-iris space area (TISA750), and angle recess area (ARA); (all p<0.001)], higher iris curvature (ICURV) (p = 0.003), and larger lens vaults (LV) (p = 0.019). These anterior ocular biometric parameters were correlated with increasing age (p<0.01). Iris thickness (IT750) and iris area (IAREA) were associated with age, ACW, and pupil diameter (all p<0.05), while choroidal thickness (CT) was associated with age, gender, and axial length (all p<0.05). Univariate regression analysis showed that greater CT was significantly associated with smaller IAREA (p = 0.026). Conclusion: Compared with male eyes, female eyes had narrower anterior biometric parameters that correlated with increasing age, which would be helpful in explaining the higher prevalence of angle closure rates in the female gender and in aging people. Increased CT might be associated with smaller iris area; however, this possibility needs to be investigated in future studies before this conclusion is made.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To describe corneal endothelial characteristics, central corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure in a population of Chinese age-related cataract patients and to determine the effects of age, gender, hypertension, and body mass index (BMI).METHODS:1551 eyes were examined preoperatively. The parameters measured were endothelial cell density (CD), average cell area (CA), coefficient of variation (CV), cell hexagonality (HEX), central corneal thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), and axial length (AL).RESULTS:There were significant differences in CV and BMI between genders. There was a significant decrease in CD, CCT, and IOP and, conversely, an increase in CA and BMI with increasing age. The patients who suffered from hypertension had bigger CA, less CD, and lower HEX than the patients who did not suffer from hypertension. CD has a negative correlation with age and CV and a positive correlation with CCT, CCT has a positive association with CD and IOP, and IOP had a negative relationship with age and a positive relationship with CCT, CA, and HEX.CONCLUSIONS:Normative data for the corneal endothelium, central corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure in the normal age-related cataract patients are reported which will serve as a baseline for comparative studies about cataract.
Association Between Myopia, Biometry and Occludable Angle: the Jiangning Eye Study

Abstract:BackgroundMyopia subjects usually have long axial lengths and are predisposed to deep anterior chamber depths and open angles. Jiangning eye study is a randomized, population based study in Shanghai to determine whether myopia has an effect on the prevalence of occludable angles.MethodsA total of 2478 residents aged 50 years and over were randomly selected, and 2044 (82.5%) individuals of them participated in ophthalmic examinations between November 2012 and February 2013. Eye examinations included autorefraction, noncontact tonometry, measurement of axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and spectral domain optical coherence tomography.ResultsThe crude prevalences of iris trabecular meshwork contact in Jiangning Chinese individuals with myopia, emmetropia, and hyperopia are 1.25%, 6.44%, and 7.43%, respectively. There is also iris trabecular meshwork contact and shallow anterior chamber depth in myopia subjects even with long axial lengths.ConclusionsThe prevalence of iris trabecular meshwork contact in myopia subjects is lower than their emmetropia or hyperopia counterparts. Axial length is an important factor associate with occludable angle.
Analysis of Factors Associated with the Ocular Features of Congenital Cataract Children in the Shanghai Pediatric Cataract Study.

Abstract:Purpose. To investigate the ocular features of children with congenital cataract in a tertiary referral eye center in East China. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of congenital cataract children who underwent cataract surgery between April 2009 and April 2014 at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University and identified factors associated with the axial length (AXL) and corneal curvature (K value). Results. We included 493 children, 210 with unilateral and 283 with bilateral cataract. The mean AXL was 22.03 +/- 1.97mm and the mean K value was 43.61 +/- 1.86 D. Age showed a linear correlation with AXL in unilateral cataract eyes and a logarithmic correlation with AXL in bilateral cataract eyes (both P < 0 001). AXL was longer and the K value was smaller (both P < 0 01) in boys than in girls after adjusting for age and cataract laterality. AXL was longer in unilateral cataract eyes than in bilateral cataract eyes after adjusting for age and gender (P = 0 004). In children with unilateral cataract, AXL was significantly longer in the affected eye than in the contralateral eye (P < 0 001). Conclusion. Age, gender, and cataract laterality together contribute to the development of ocular features of congenital cataract children, especially for AXL.
Associations between anterior segment biometry and high axial myopia in 3438 cataractous eyes in the Chinese population

Abstract:Abstract Background To investigate the associations between anterior segment biometry and high axial myopia in cataractous eyes in the Chinese population. Methods Data on 3438 eyes from 3438 subjects were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Anterior segment biometry, axial length measurements, and intraocular pressure evaluation were implemented using an Oculus Pentacam HR, a Zeiss IOLMaster 500, and a Nidek TonoRef II, respectively. A multivariate-adjusted logistic model and a multivariate-adjusted linear model were used for statistical analysis. Results The mean age of the subjects was 62.2 ± 10.6 years, and 56.4% were female. There were 2665 subjects with high axial myopia (axial length, ≥26.50 mm) and 773 without (axial length, < 26.50 mm). The characteristics independently associated with high axial myopia included lower total corneal refractive power, a more negative Q value, greater total corneal astigmatism, greater white-to-white corneal diameter, greater anterior chamber depth, and higher intraocular pressure (all P < 0.05). In addition, greater axial length correlated with a thicker temporal cornea and a thinner nasal cornea (both P < 0.001). Conclusions For cataractous eyes, high axial myopia was associated with corneal flattening, increased total corneal astigmatism, anterior segment enlargement, and intraocular pressure elevation. The findings may inform the choice of intraocular lenses and the calculation of their power, help improve the surgical practice of refractive cataract procedures, and provide useful information on the centration and stability of intraocular lenses.

Abstract:Purpose:To investigate the distribution of white-to-white (WTW) distance and its associations with other biometric parameters in Chinese cataractous eyes. Methods:Data on 39,986 eyes from 23,627 Chinese cataract patients were analyzed. Ocular biometric parameters, including WTW distance, corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), central corneal thickness (CCT), and axial length (AL), were obtained using the ZEISS IOLMaster 700. Results:The mean age of patients was 63.7 ± 12.4 years, and 57.61% were female. The mean WTW distance was 11.69 ± 0.46 mm. The WTW distance was larger in male patients than in female patients for all age groups (all P < 0.001). The WTW distance was positively correlated with corneal curvature and ACD and negatively correlated with age, LT, and CCT (all P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed that a larger WTW distance was associated with younger age; male gender; larger corneal curvature, ACD, and LT; and thinner CCT (all P < 0.001). Notably, the association between WTW distance and AL was not linear. As the AL increased, the WTW distance initially increased, reached a peak in the group with ALs of 24.5 to 26 mm, and then slowly decreased. However, all of the myopic eyes (AL > 24.5 mm) still had larger WTWs than the normal and short eyes (AL ≤ 24.5 mm). Conclusions:In Chinese cataractous eyes, the WTW distance was larger in younger male patients with flatter corneas, deeper anterior chambers, thicker lenses, and thinner central corneas. The association between WTW distance and AL was not linear, and WTW distance was the largest in eyes with ALs of 24.5 to 26 mm.
Preoperative Characteristics of Ocular Biometry in Children with Unilateral Congenital Cataracts

Abstract:The ocular biometry characteristics are clinically significant for children with unilateral congenital cataracts, but there is a lack of data analysis concerning the preoperative measurements. The axial length (AL), mean keratometry (Km), corneal astigmatism (CA), and the anterior chamber depth (ACD) from both eyes before cataract surgery were obtained from 205 patients (410 eyes, 3–15 years of age) with unilateral congenital cataracts. In the congenital cataract eyes, shorter AL (22.44 ± 1.52 mm vs. 22.57 ± 1.04 mm, p = 0.036) and higher CA (– 1.89 ± 0.91 D vs. – 1.24 ± 0.67 D, p < 0.001) were found, and no significant difference was found in the Km and the ACD measurements compared to the contralateral normal eyes. Females had shorter AL and shallower ACD compared to males. However, the Km and CA in the females were significantly larger than that in males. Shorter AL, larger Km, higher CA, and shallower ACD were also found in females who had a binocular axial difference (the value obtained by subtraction of the contralateral normal eye from the congenital cataract eye) that less than zero. The preoperative ocular biometry of shorter AL, larger Km, higher CA, and shallower ACD should be considered in females with unilateral congenital cataracts. The age and the binocular axial differences had a statistically significant correlation (r = –0.192, p = 0.006). Therefore, changes in the binocular axial differences associated with aging may enhance the guidelines for intraocular lens selection and the management of congenital cataracts.
Quantitative assessments of retinal macular structure among rural-dwelling older adults in China: a population-based, cross-sectional, optical coherence tomography study

Abstract:Objectives To quantitatively assess and compare retinal macular structures of rural-dwelling older adults in China using two different optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanners and to examine their associations with demographic, lifestyle, clinical and ocular factors. Design, setting and participants This population-based, cross-sectional study included 971 participants (age ≥60 years) derived from the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China study. We collected data on demographics, lifestyle factors, clinical conditions (eg, cardiovascular disease (CVD)) and ocular factors (eg, visual acuity and spherical equivalent). We used two models of spectral-domain OCT to measure macular parameters in nine Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study subfields. Data were analysed using the multiple general linear models. Results Spectralis OCT demonstrated higher macular thickness but a lower macular volume than Primus 200 OCT (p<0.05). Nasal quadrant of the inner and outer subfields was the thickest, followed by superior quadrant. Adjusting for multiple potential confounding variables, older age was significantly correlated with lower average inner and outer macular thicknesses and overall macular volume. Men had higher macular parameters than women. The presence of CVD was correlated with lower central macular thickness (β=–6.83; 95% CI: –13.08 to –0.58; p=0.032). Middle school or above was associated with higher average inner macular thickness (β=7.85; 95% CI: 1.14 to 14.55; p=0.022) and higher spherical equivalent was correlated with lower average inner macular thickness (β=–1.78; 95% CI: –3.50 to –0.07; p=0.042). Conclusions Macular thickness and volume assessed by Spectralis and Primus 200 OCT scanners differ. Older age and female sex are associated with lower macular thickness and volume. Macular parameters are associated with education, CVD and spherical equivalent. Trial registeration number MIND-China study (ChiCTR1800017758).

Abstract:Objectives: The study aims to explore the ocular biometry of a myopic population in Northern China, focusing specifically on anterior and posterior segment lengths. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The medical records of 3458 myopic patients who underwent refractive surgery were evaluated. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and other biometric parameters were measured using the IOL Master 700. The study determined the anterior segment length (ASL = ACD + LT), the posterior segment length (PSL = AL − ASL) and the ratio of ASL to PSL (ASL/PSL). Results: This study included 3458 eyes from 3458 myopic patients (1171 men and 2287 women). The mean age was 27.38 ± 6.88, ranging from 16 to 48 years old. The mean ASL was 7.35 ± 0.27 mm, and the mean PSL was 18.39 ± 1.18 mm. The ASL and PSL trends demonstrate an age-related increase for both genders, with notable gender-specific variations. Across most age groups, males typically exhibited higher ASLs and PSLs than females, with the exception of the 35–40 and 40–45 age groups. The ASL and PSL consistently increased with a rising AL. The AL strongly correlates with the PSL and negatively correlates with the ASL/PSL ratio. The ACD and LT moderately correlate with the ASL, but an increased LT does not imply a longer posterior segment. The CCT and SE show little correlation with axial eye parameters. Conclusions: Among Chinese myopic patients, a longer ASL and PSL were correlated with older age and the male gender. The AL strongly correlates positively with the PSL and negatively correlates with the ASL/PSL ratio. An elongation of the posterior segment may primarily account for an eyeball's lengthening.

Abstract:Detailed characterizations of ocular biometrics and parameters of aqueous humor dynamics are lacking in primary angle closure suspect (PACS) patients. This study aims to characterize these parameters and compare them with age-matched healthy volunteers.Elderly healthy volunteers (60.6 +/- 7.2 years of age, mean-SD, n=28) and PACS patients (64.1 +/- 11.6 years, n=30) completed the study. Parameters investigated were axial length (AXL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), central cornea thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), aqueous flow (Fa), outflow facility (C), episcleral venous pressure (EVP), and uveoscleral outflow (Fu). Comparisons and correlations were made between and within groups.In healthy volunteers, ocular biometric parameters, IOP, and EVP correlated very well between the 2 eyes of each individual, but Fa, C, and Fu were not significantly correlated. Biometric parameters of the PACS group significantly (P<0.001) differed from those of the healthy controls: AXL (23.31 +/- 1.03mm [PACS] vs 22.39 +/- 1.04mm [Control]; mean +/- SD), ACD (2.44 +/- 0.33mm [PACS] vs 1.86 +/- 0.25mm [Control]), ACV (136.0 +/- 36.1 mu L [PACS] vs 81.4 +/- 21.8 mu L [Control]), CCT (526.9 +/- 37.0 mu m [PACS] vs 556.1 +/- 28.4 mu m [Control]). There was no significant change in IOP, Fa, C, EVP, or Fu between Control and PACS. Furthermore, IOP showed no significant correlations with AXL, ACD, ACV, CCT, or C in both groups.The PACS eyes had a shorter AXL, a shallower ACD, and a smaller ACV, but a thicker CCT. Despite these morphological changes, the PACS eyes did not have any significant changes in IOP, and aqueous humor dynamics parameters. This is consistent with the findings that IOP did not show significant correlations with biometrics, or C.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To estimate the cataract surgical coverage and cataract surgery rate and to assess the visual outcome of cataract surgery among individuals aged at or over 50 years old in four rural populations from four different areas of western China. METHODS:This cross-sectional study, performed during the period 2003 - 2005, used the method of cluster sampling and recruited 5562 persons aged 50 years old or above through household census. Standardized ocular examinations including visual acuity test, intraocular pressure measurement, slit-lamp and fundus examination were performed. The main outcome criteria were cataract surgical coverage, cataract surgery rate, complication rate and visual outcome after cataract surgery. RESULTS:Of individuals with bilateral presenting visual acuity < 6/60 due to age-related cataract, the cataract surgical coverage was 54% in Qinghai. It was the highest among these four populations. The highest cataract surgery rate (CSR) value was 1551 in Qinghai and the lowest 143 in Guangxi during the period of 2000-2002. The overall intraocular lens implantation rate was 51.5% in 200 eyes with cataract surgery and 40.5% eyes with post-operative visual acuity < 6/60. The overall post-operative complication rate was 28%. CONCLUSION:In the beginning of 21st century, the cataract surgical coverage in four rural populations aged 50 years old or above in western China was low and similar to the situation of the last decade in eastern China. Cataract surgical technique and low IOL implantation rate are the main causes for a poor visual outcome. To reduce the risks of cataract blindness, the clinicians should substantially improve the visual outcome as well as the number of cataract surgery.

Abstract:Aims This study evaluates ocular biometrics and aqueous humour dynamics (AHD) in healthy Chinese volunteers to determine how the various ocular parameters interact to maintain physiological intraocular pressure (IOP) at all ages.Methods Sixty-nine volunteers enrolled in this cross-sectional study and were categorised into young (20-30 years) and old (>= 50 years) groups. Measurements included IOP, ocular biometrics and AHD. Data were analysed using mixed model with random sampling to account for both eyes from the same individual. Spearman's rank correlation with bootstrap resampling was used to find associations between parameters.Results Compared with young subjects, old subjects had significantly (p<0.05) thinner corneas (CCT; 549.7 +/- 5.7 vs 530.6 +/- 5.3 mu m; mean +/- SEM), shallower anterior chambers (3.14 +/- 0.05 vs 2.37 +/- 0.05 mm) and slower aqueous flow (Fa; 3.0 +/- 0.1 vs 2.7 +/- 0.1 mu L/min). Uveoscleral outflow slowed (Fu; 1.0 +/- 0.2 vs 0.7 +/- 0.1) but not significantly. A positive linear association between IOP and episcleral venous pressure was found (young: R-2=0.16; old: R-2=0.08). Negative correlation between Fa and CCT (R-2=0.06) and positive correlation between Fa and outflow facility (R-2=0.08) was found in old participants.Conclusions In the healthy ageing Chinese eye, IOP remains unchanged, while Fa slows, which is counterbalanced by slowing of Fu. Aqueous humour exits the eye preferentially through the trabecular route at all ages. Ageing is also associated with shallowing of the anterior chamber and thinning of the cornea. A slower Fa with lower outflow facility supports existence of autoregulatory mechanisms.

Abstract:The prevalence and the distribution characteristics of corneal astigmatism (CA) and anterior segment biometry before surgery in Chinese congenital cataract (CC) patients are not completely understood. This study involved 400 CC patients from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center enrolled from February 2011 to August 2015. Data on CA, keratometry, central corneal thickness (CCT) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were measured by the Pentacam Scheimpflug System. The mean age of patients was 54.27 months, and the ratio of boys to girls was 1.53:1. The mean CA was 2.03 diopters (D), and 39.25% of subjects had CA values ≥2 D. The most frequent (71.8%) diagnosis was with-the-rule astigmatism. Oblique astigmatism was present in 16.2% of cases, and 12% of cases had against-the-rule astigmatism. The mean keratometry measurement of cataractous eyes in bilateral patients was significantly larger than that in unilateral patients. Girls had a larger mean keratometry but a thinner CCT than did boys. The CA, CCT, and ACD of cataractous eyes were significantly larger than those of non-cataractous eyes in unilateral patients. The CA, mean keratometry, CCT, and ACD in CC patients varied with age, gender, and laterality. Fully understanding these characteristics may help inform guidelines and treatment decisions in CC patients.
