Abstract:The development of photoresponsive systems with non-invasive orthogonal control by distinct wavelengths of light is still in its infancy. In particular, the design of photochemically triggered-orthogonal systems integrated into solid materials that enable multiple dynamic control over their properties remains a longstanding challenge. Here we report the orthogonal and reversible control of two types of photoswitches in an integrated solid porous framework, that is, visible-light responsive o-fluoroazobenzene and nitro-spiropyran motifs. The properties of the constructed material can be selectively controlled by different wavelengths of light thus generating four distinct states providing a basis for dynamic multifunctional materials. Solid state NMR demonstrated the selective transformation of the azobenzene switch in the bulk which in turn modulates N2 and CO2 adsorption.

Abstract:Synthetic molecular photoswitches have taken center stage as high-precision tools to introduce light-responsiveness at the smallest scales. Today they are found in all areas of applied chemistry, covering materials research, chemical biology, catalysis, or nanotechnology. For a next step of applicability truly orthogonal photoswitching is highly desirable but to date such fully independent addressability of different photoswitches remains to be extremely challenging. In this work we present the first example of all-visible, all-light responsive, path independent, and fully orthogonal photoswitching. By combining two recently developed indigoid photoswitches - peri-anthracenethioindigo and rhodanine-based chromophore - a four-state system is established and each state can be accessed in very high yields completely independently and also with visible light irradiation only. The four states give rise to four different colors, which can be transferred to a solid polymer matrix yielding a multi-state photochromic material of high versatility. Further, combination with a fluorescent dye as third component is possible elevating applicability in all-photonic molecular logic behavior and information processing with this orthogonal photoswitching system.

Abstract:An orthogonal three‐wavelength‐controlled two‐stage supramolecular self‐assembly is developed, which shows photochromic properties of absorption and fluorescence in different behaviors. It allows to create a visual pattern capable of displaying multiple hidden information simultaneously in aqueous solution. This work signifies a promising strategy in improving the ability of information encryption and anti‐counterfeiting in living systems. Photoswitchable supramolecular self‐assemblies are promising candidates for intelligent recognition because of their noninvasive and spatial precision. However, the manipulation of the self‐assembly and disintegration of multicomponent mixtures with light of different wavelengths remain difficult. Here, an orthogonal three‐wavelength‐controlled two‐stage supramolecular self‐assembly consisting of two photoswitches, diarylethene, and protonated merocyanine is designed, mediated by supramolecular macrocyclic host. Owing to the reversible photo‐transformation of the switches, an optimized approach including three wavelengths irradiation and a thermal relaxation process is developed without mutual interference, realizing interconversion among four self‐assembled states. These self‐assemblies are photodeformable with reversibility, which can be operated in a cellular environment. Taking advantage of the photochromism in both absorption and fluorescence of these self‐assemblies in different behaviors, a visual pattern that can simultaneously display multiple hidden information under dual‐signal emission is created. This work signifies a promising strategy in improving the ability of information encryption and anti‐counterfeiting.

Abstract:Multiphotochromic systems are of immense importance for promising applications nowadays, while it remains a formidable challenge to develop a compound containing various photoswitches with spectral complementarity. Herein, we describe a novel multiphotochromic system based on a first generation donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) and an aurone, in which all physicochemical properties of two photoswitches are preserved and four isomers are selectively reachable with three different wavelengths of light sources (365 nm, 430 nm, 585 nm) and a thermal relaxation process in an orthogonal manner. Multi-addressable behavior of the system could be beneficial for potential applications such as logic devices and photo-printing.

Abstract:The ability of molecular photoswitches to convert on/off responses into large macroscale property change is fundamental to light-responsive materials. However, moving beyond simple binary responses necessitates the introduction of new elements that control the chemistry of the photoswitching process at the molecular scale. To achieve this goal, we designed, synthesized and developed a single photochrome, based on a modified donor–acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA), capable of independently addressing multiple molecular states. The multi-stage photoswitch enables complex switching phenomena. To demonstrate this, we show spatial control of the transformation of a three-stage photoswitch by tuning the population of intermediates along the multi-step reaction pathway of the DASAs without interfering with either the first or final stage. This allows for a photonic three-stage logic gate where the secondary wavelength solely negates the input of the primary wavelength. These results provide a new strategy to move beyond traditional on/off binary photochromic systems and enable the design of future molecular logic systems.

Abstract:In photoswitches that undergo fluorescence switching upon ultraviolet irradiation, photoluminescence and photoisomerization often occur simultaneously, leading to unstable fluorescence properties. Here, we successfully demonstrated reversible solid-state triple fluorescence switching through "Pump-Trigger" multiphoton manipulation. A novel fluorescence photoswitch, BOSA-SP, achieved green, yellow, and red fluorescence under excitation by pump light and isomerization induced by trigger light. The energy ranges of photoexcitation and photoisomerization did not overlap, enabling appropriate selection of the multiphoton light for "pump" and "trigger" photoswitching, respectively. Additionally, the large free volume of the spiropyran (SP) moiety in the solid state promoted reversible photoisomerization. Switching between "pump" and "trigger" light is useful for three-color tunable switching cell imaging, which can be exploited in programmable fluorescence switching. Furthermore, we exploited reversible dual-fluorescence switching in a single molecular system to successfully achieve two-color super-resolution imaging.

Abstract:Optical information storage requires careful control of excitation and emission wavelengths in a reversible and orthogonal manner to enable efficient reading, writing, and erasing of information. Photochromic systems, in which a photoswitch is typcially coupled to an emissive organic fluorophore, have much promise in this regard. However, these suffer from considerable spectral overlap between the switch and fluorophore, such that their emissive and photoswitchable properties are not orthogonal. Here, we overcome this limitation by coupling visible/NIR emissive lanthanide complexes with molecuar photoswitches, enabling reversible and orthogonal photoswitching with visible light. Crucially, photoswitching does not lead to sensitised emission from the lanthanide, while excitation of the lanthanide does not induce photoswitching, enabling the state of the system to be probed without perturbation of the switch. This opens up the possibility of developing multi-colour read-write methods for information storage using emisisve photoswitches.

Abstract:A novel light-responsive supramolecular polymer was demonstrated from an overcrowded alkene switch (OAS) mounted with two rigid 2-ureido-4-pyrimidinone (UPy) groups. By strong quadruple hydrogen bonding interactions, transOAS-Upy could form well-defined nanospheres in chloroform, which would be transformed into worm-like assemblies after UV irradiation. Moreover, the inverse process of this system could be achieved by exposure to heat.

Abstract:Light offers unique opportunities for controlling the activity of materials and biosystems with high spatiotemporal resolution. Molecular photoswitches are chromophores that undergo reversible isomerization between different states upon irradiation with light, allowing a convenient means to control their influence over the system of interest. However, a significant limitation of classical photoswitches is the requirement to initiate the switching in one or both directions using deleterious UV light with poor tissue penetration. Red-shifted photoswitches are hence in high demand and have attracted keen recent research interest. In this Review, we highlight recent progress towards the development of visible- and NIR-activated photoswitches characterized by distinct photochromic reaction mechanisms. We hope to inspire further endeavors in this field, allowing the full potential of these tools in biotechnology and materials chemistry applications to be realized.

Abstract:Gated photochromism is of interest for the operation and control of modern high-tech optofunctional materials. For further advancing this topic towards the achievement of multifunctional molecular switching, however, it remains a great challenge to incorporate multiple fluorescence regulation into gated photochromism in one unimolecular system. Herein, it is reported that a dithienylethene derivative DTEN with a Schiff base connection can be facilely synthesized by one-step coupling, and it enabled distinct color and spectral changes upon different stimuli, including ultraviolet, visible light, Ni2+, and Al3+. Relying on hydrazine and hydroxy units in this molecule, compound DTEN exhibited novel Ni2+-locked photochromic characteristics originating from complexation of the compound with Ni2+ in a 2:1 stoichiometry. On the other hand, a 1:1 complexation between compound DTEN and Al3+ could allow both of the initial and photostationary states of DTEN to display fluorescent enhancement and a redshift, realizing a dual-fluorescence "turn-on" sensing of Al3+ by light. On this basis, it is argued that the switching of the coordination mode between DTEN and Ni2+ or Al3+ brings up the possibility of tunable photoswitching by multiple stimuli, which offers a novel way for future development of multifunctional switching materials with different input and output signals, as exemplified by the construction of a delicate molecular circuit.

Abstract:We synthesized a novel green-light-responsive tetra-ortho-isopropoxy-substituted azobenzene (ipAzo). Cis-ipAzo forms a strong host-guest complex with gamma-cyclo dextrin (gamma-CD) whereas trans-ipAzo binds weakly. This new photoresponsive host-guest interaction is reverse to the well-known azobenzene (Azo)/alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) complex, which is strong only between trans-Azo and alpha-CD. By combining the UV-light-responsive Azo/alpha-CD and greenlight- responsive ipAzo/gamma-CD host-guest complexes, a photoresponsive orthogonal supramolecular system is developed.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive behaviour is key to the design of smart materials, surfaces, nano-systems and effector molecules, allowing their application as switchable catalysts, molecular transporters, bioimaging probes or caged drugs. Supramolecular chemistry has embraced the widespread integration of photoswitches because of their precise spatiotemporal addressability and waste-free nature. In the vibrant area of discrete metal-mediated self-assembly, however, photoswitches are still rarely employed. Only recently has it been shown that embedding photoswitches into the organic backbones of coordination cages enables control of their host and material properties and thus unlocks the hitherto unexploited dynamic adaptivity of such systems. Here we discuss four cases where triggering ligand-integrated photoswitches leads to (1) control over disassembly/reassembly, (2) bi-stable switching between defined states, (3) interplay with thermal processes in metastable systems and (4) light-fuelled dissipative self-assembly. We highlight first clues concerning the relationship between fundamental photophysics and dynamic assembly equilibria and propose directions for future development.

Abstract:Organic photoswitchable molecules have struggled in solid state form to fulfill their remarkable potential, in terms of photoswitching performance and long-term stability when compared to their inorganic counterparts. We report the concept of non-electron deficient host's surface with optimal porosity and hydrophobicity, as a priori strategy to design photoefficient organic solid-state photochromic materials with outstanding mechanical robustness. When exposed to a light stimulus including natural sunlight, the photoswitchable nanocomposite changes color promptly and reversibly, in a matter of seconds along with excellent photo-fatigue resistance, which are on a par with inorganic photochromes. Exemplars of commercially viable prototypes that are optically clear, comprising smart windows, complex photochromic sculptures, and self-erasing rewritable devices, were engineered by direct blending with resilient polymers; particularly, the use of high-stiffness polymer (> 2 GPa) is no longer an insurmountable challenge. Finally, photochromic films with anticounterfeiting features could be manufactured through precision inkjet printing of nanocrystals.

Abstract:Photoswitchable molecules that undergo nanoscopic changes upon photoisomerisation can be harnessed to control macroscopic properties such as colour, solubility, shape, and motion of the systems they are incorporated into. These molecules find applications in various fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. Until recently, research efforts have focused on the design of efficient photoswitches responsive to low-energy (red or near-infrared) irradiation, which however may compromise other molecular properties such as thermal stability and robustness. Indirect isomerisation methods enable photoisomerisation with low-energy photons without altering the photoswitch core, and also open up new avenues in controlling the thermal switching mechanism. In this perspective, we present the state of the art of five indirect excitation methods: two-photon excitation, triplet sensitisation, photon upconversion, photoinduced electron transfer, and indirect thermal methods. Each impacts our understanding of the fundamental physicochemical properties of photochemical switches, and offers unique application prospects in biomedical technologies and beyond.

Abstract:Photochromic materials are those which can undergo reversible photo-switches between two different states or isomers upon alternative irradiation with different wavelengths of light accompanied by distinct photophysical and photochemical properties. Inspired by their special photo-switchable characteristics, a variety of light-driven functional materials have been exploited, such as ultrahigh-density optical data storage, molecular switches, logic gates, molecular wires, optic/electronic devices, multi-photon devices, surface/nanoparticle devices, liquid crystals, bio-imaging and so on. Apart from these, further creation of optoelectronic and photo-optical devices based on photochromic molecular switches which operate at both molecular and supramolecular levels have recently attracted many attentions. Thus photo-switchable compounds also have played an important role in sensing, self-assembly, aggregation-induced enhanced emission and photo-controlled biological systems. In particular, dithienylethene derivatives are one of the most promising families of photochromic compounds due to their excellent thermal-stability, remarkable fatigue-resistance, rapid response and fairly high photocyclization quantum yields as well as reactivity in the solid state. According to our recent research achievements, this article provides an overview of recent exciting progress mainly in the field of photochromic dithienylethene derivatives, from systems in solution to modified functional surfaces. Furthermore, based on current development of these photo-switchable systems, further development as well as existing challenges are also discussed and put in prospect.
Spirooxazine-based multifunctional molecular switches with tunable photochromism and nonlinear optical response

Abstract:A new type of organic photochromic spirooxazine has been synthesized, incorporating increasing numbers of thiophene units by vinyl bridges. These compounds exhibit tunable photochromic properties that are sensitive to low-energy visible light compared with traditional UV. Furthermore, the ring-opening mechanism is put in relation to the interaction of fragment molecular orbitals. The result shows that the effective excitation with significant intensity is centred mainly on the naphthoxazine part and vinyl thiophene plays a crucial role in the photochemical and photophysical process. Density functional calculations are performed to rationalize the "on and off" switching nonlinear optical behaviors of compounds, showing the potential for applying the materials in nonlinear optical switches.

Abstract:By introducing a unique, intrinsically chiral copper-gated photoswitch to soft materials, dynamic photoprogramming of LC helical microstructures with multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs) has been established, featuring fine photocontrollability in wavelength and the manipulable range of photonic bands and photoswitch-induced fluorescence intensity. This interesting work could pave a promising avenue toward photoprogramming soft helical multiple DOFs microstructures, especially for integrated optical devices and biologically inspired optical materials.
