Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) in the older rural and urban Chinese populations in Zhejiang province. An analysis of the association between potential factors and QoL for these two groups was conducted. A cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2007. The total sample consisted of 2,441 rural and 2,554 urban participants. A Chinese version of the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to quantify the QoL of participants. A comparison between the QoL of rural and urban participants was made. The association between potential factors and QoL was performed using a multiple linear regression model. The study revealed all scale scores of SF-36 in the rural population were significantly lower than those in the urban population except general health (GH; p < .001). The common factors associated with high QoL in both older rural and urban populations were gender (male), tea consumption, income, and consumption of alcohol. Age and the number of chronic diseases an individual suffered from were negatively associated with QoL. In addition, the study revealed the perception that giving up smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol were negatively associated with QoL for participants living in rural areas, whereas educational level and regular exercise were positively associated with QoL for participants living in urban areas. Intervention programs for decreasing chronic diseases, establishing security mechanisms of the pension, and spreading the knowledge of healthy lifestyles may improve QoL for the older populations in Zhejiang province, especially in rural areas.

Abstract:Quality of life of the elderly population is of an increasing concern,and the understanding of the subjective well-being of the elderly population will help improve it.Based on data from a survey of urban and rural elderly people in Hangzhou,we econometrically analyzed its demographic characteristics,including parent-child relationship,economic conditions,physical and mental health,living conditions.It is found that urban elders are happier than rural elders. Children's filial piety has a significant effect and is the most important factor for the subjective well-being of both urban and rural elderly populations.Economic conditions,job satisfaction, marriage,sex are the other common factors,but the degree of influence is different between urban and rural populations.In addition,there are still some different influential factors:in urban model are the personal characteristics,such as self-care and the number of children,while in the rural model are the economic and social security factors such as income sources and the approach to protect themselves when their rights and interests are violated.In short,there are different needs for urban and rural elderly people to improve their quality of life.While urban elders focus on spiritual needs,rural elders still need to meet the material ones first.
[Study on Social Determinants and Health-Related Quality of Life among the 'empty Nest' (lonely) Elderly Chinese People].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the social determinants and health-related quality of life among the Chinese 'empty nest' (lonely) elderly.METHODS:A total of 4995 elderly, aged 60 or over were recruited in rural and urban areas of Zhejiang province, under a cluster sampling method. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the social determinants on the 'empty nest' elderly. Health-related quality of life was assessed by SF-36 and compared between the 'empty nest' and 'non-empty nest' elderly, using multiple linear regression analysis after adjusting for confounding factors.RESULTS:Comparing with the 'non-empty nest' elderly, the characteristics of the empty nest population were as follows: age at 70 to 79 (P = 0.0417), having higher education level (P < 0.0001), living in rural area (P < 0.0001), lower income level (P = 0.0178, P = 0.0049), with higher level of satisfaction of life (P = 0.0070, P = 0.0035) and lower level of depressive mood (P = 0.0371). 'Empty nest' elderly people had lower scores of SF-36 in BP (P = 0.0032)dimension of physical function, and RE (P = 0.0033) dimension of psychological function as well as MCS (P = 0.0342) after adjusting for age, gender, marriage status, education level, residential areas, personal income, scores for satisfaction of life and depressive mood.CONCLUSION:The 'empty nest' elderly people with the characteristics such as higher education level, lower income level and living in the rural areas should be under greater concern, especially on those people with lower health-related quality of life or poorer psychological function.

Abstract:Objective To assess quality of life in elderly in Shanghai communities and to analyze relevant influence factors.Methods The quality of life and relevant influence factors of 4 395 residents aged 60 years or older who were registered in the health records of three community healthcare centers in Shanghai were investigated through questionnaire survey.Results Total 4 350 valid questionnaire were retrieved with a response rate of 99.0％.The mean physical component summary scale (PCS) score was (50.1± 10.1) and the mean mental component summary scale (MCS) score was (47.3±7.9).Factors influencing the quality of life in order of importance were depressive symptom(B=-8.41),self-care ability(B=7.45),disease score(B=-1.91),participating in outdoor activities(B=1.89),proportion of medical expenses over income(B=-1.72),social intercourse score(B=-1.48),gender(B=-1.37),education level(B=-1.03) and age(B=-0.93).Conclusion The quality of life in elderly residents of Shanghai is relatively high,but the mental components of quality of life need to be further improved.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo understand the health-related life quality and its influencing factors in elderly community residents in Shanghai， and to provide reference for improving their life quality.MethodsDuring April to June 2021， a cross-sectional survey was conducted in five selected community health care centers， from Baoshan District， Minhang District， Songjiang District and Pudong New District of Shanghai， respectively. The elderly residents aged 65 and over who received physical examination were face-to-face interviewed using EQ-5D-5L scale. SPSS 26.0 and Stata 16 were used for statistical analysis. Binary logistic regression， multiple linear regression and Tobit regression were used to analyze influencing factors of each dimension in EQ-5D scale， EQ-VAS score and health utility value.ResultsA total of 1302 elderly residents were included in the study， and the proportions of problems in the five dimensions of EQ-5D-5L scale were pain/discomfort （13.9%）， mobility （9.1%）， daily activity （5.8%）， self-care ability （4.8%） and anxiety/depression （3.6%）， while age was a factor influencing problems in each dimension. The average score of EQ-VAS was 84.28±10.32， and the average health utility value based on Chinese population was 0.97±0.08， which was higher than the rest of the country. Tobit regression analysis showed that female （t=-3.96， P<0.001）， age group over 75 （t=-5.28， P<0.001）， high school education or above （t=-2.53， P=0.012）， chronic disease （t=-5.12， P<0.001） had poor quality of life （P<0.05）.ConclusionThe overall quality of life of the elderly in Shanghai community is good， but the quality of life in the elderly women and in the group suffering from chronic diseases is relatively poor. It is necessary to pay more attention to the key populations to improve their health status.

Abstract:Objective To understand the quality of life of elderly person living at community,and to find out the related influencing factors and thus to provide references for policies makers to improve the of life quality of the elderly person.Methods To investigate quality of life for elderly person living at community in Minhang district of Shanghai by adopting SF-36 form. Conclusions The controllable factors that impact on quality of life of elderly living at community is habitation,physical exercise,entertainment and disease.

Abstract:Objective:To know about the status quo of quality of life(QOL)and its influencing factors of people more than 80 years old living at home.Methods:A total of 390 community-dwelling senile aged more than 80 years old in Shanghai were investigated by the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire.The influencing factors were analyzed by t-test and analysis of variance.Results:The scores were in turn 44.60±11.02、48.15±10.32、55.85±9.85、42.34±11.15 respectively in the physical domain,psychological domain,social relations and the environmental domain.The score of each area was significantly lower than the norm(P<0.01).The main influencing factors of QOL were gender,dwelling style,education level,economic level,the number of species suffering from chronic diseases and daily drug administration.There were significant differences for each factor in different areas of QOL of the oldest people.Conclusion:The overall QOL of the community-dwelling senile aged is poor,which should be paid sufficient attention to by the social and the community health services.

Abstract:Background Population aging is an inevitable trend and previous studies have showed the relationship between social health related factors and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in the elderly. The objective of this study is to investigate the association of social health status with HR-QOL among community-dwelling elderly in Zhejiang. Methods This cross-sectional study was based on community-dwelling elderly individuals from July 2018 to September 2018 in Zhejiang, China. HR-QOL was measured by the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). Social health status was estimated by the long-form of the Social Health Scale for the Elderly (SHSE-L) and classified into three categories (poor, moderate and good). Multivariable linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the association between social health status and HR-QOL (PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score). Results A total of 2952 elderly participants were included in this study. The mean age was 70.68 ± 7.75 years (mean ± SD); of the eligible participants, more than half (50.4%) were females; the mean scores were 48.10 ± 8.49, 47.70 ± 7.09 and 47.90 ± 5.86 for PCS, MCS and SF-12 total score, separately. Results from the multivariable models showed that social health status was positively related to HR-QOL after adjusting for covariates. Compared with individuals with a poor social health status, those who had a moderate or good social health status were more likely to report better HR-QOL (for moderate social health status: β = 1.90(95%CI: 1.09, 2.71) for PCS, β = 1.78(1.08, 2.48) for MCS, β = 1.84(1.29, 2.39) for SF-12 total score; for good social health status: β = 3.29(2.24, 4.34) for PCS, β = 3.10(2.12, 4.01) for MCS, β = 3.20(2.48, 3.91) for SF-12 total score). Conclusion In our study, we found that social health status was positively associated with HR-QOL among the elderly in Zhejiang. Our findings could provide valuable information for decision-makers to develop interventions to improve the HR-QOL of the elderly.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the health quality and analyze the influencing factors of elderly people in the community of Shanghai.Methods A sample survey of elderly persons above 60 years old in a community of Shanghai was made and some statistically analysis was conducted.Results This survey showed high prevalence of chronic diseases in this community,the ranking of diseases were: hypertension,heart disease,diabetes,chronic bronchitis,high cholesterol and so on.The ability of daily living and the self-evaluation was good,most of them were optimistic.Conclusion The older,the higher prevalence occurred of chronic diseases,the worse of the ability of daily living.BMI was related to hypertension and high cholesterol.Long-term smoking may cause diabetes,heart disease,and high cholesterol;marital status and living mode were concerned with elderly chronic diseases.Age and hearing problems affected the activities of daily living.To enhance the social security and improve the health level of elderly persons from "social care,government safeguard,community facilities,home nursing,personal protection" was proposed.

The major influential factors on the life quality were gender, education, marriage, profession, age, disease, residence, entertainment, physical exercise for community; Age, disease, residence, entertainment, physical exercise for nursing home; Age, etc for elderly ward. Conclusions The influences of demographic factors on life quality of the senior citizens in communities are more significant than in nursing home and elderly wards. Variations on the degree of satisfaction (in residence, entertainment, health care and transportation) and the situation of physical exercise have made vast difference in the life quality of the senior citizens both in communities and nursing homes.

Abstract:Purpose: There is a growing population of older people living alone within the context of dramatic population ageing and changing living arrangements. However, little is known about the quality of life (QoL) of older people living alone in Mainland China. This study aimed to investigate QoL and its related factors among Chinese older people who live alone. Methods: A stratified random cluster sample of 521 community-dwelling older people living alone in Shanghai completed a structured questionnaire through face-to-face interviews. QoL was measured using the Older People's Quality of Life Questionnaire. Other data collected included self-rated health, physical health, cognitive function, depression, functional ability, loneliness, social support, physical activity, health services satisfaction, satisfaction with overall dwelling conditions and socio-demographic variables. Results: Older people living alone in Mainland China rated social relationships and financial circumstances as sources of low satisfaction within their QoL. Multiway analysis of variance showed that satisfaction with overall dwelling conditions, self-rated health, functional ability, depression, economic level, social support, loneliness, previous occupation and health services satisfaction were independently related to QoL, accounting for 68.8% of the variance. Depression and previous occupation had an interaction effect upon QoL. Conclusions: This study identified nine factors influencing the QoL of older people living alone in Mainland China. Interventions to increase satisfaction with dwelling conditions, improve economic level, social support and functional ability, decrease loneliness and depression and improve health services satisfaction appear to be important for enhancing their QoL.
The Status of Quality of Life and Social Support: an Investigation of the Resident People in a Community of Shanghai

Abstract:Purpose Get to know the status of quality of life, social support and their relationship through an investigation in a community of Shanghai in order to carry out evidence based intervention to improve their quality of life. Methods Six hundred resident people were chosen by systematic sampling. The questionnaires of WHOQOL-BREF(Chinese Version) and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS) were used as research instruments. Correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the domains of WHOQOL-BREF and SSRS. Results Every domain score of the WHOQOL-BREF was low, especially the psychological score which was just 45.94% of the full score of this domain. The score of the objective support in SSRS was lower than other domains, which was only 40% of this domain full score. Positive correlations were found between the scores of every two domains of WHOQOL-BREF and SSRS. Conclusions More attention should be paid to physical and mental health of the resident people. Improving social support could be considered a good way to enhance their quality of life.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To verify the association between social determinants and the quality of life (QoL) among the elderly in Beijing.METHODS:A questionnaire household survey was conducted and 1 685 over 60 dwellers in Beijing were interviewed. The EQ-5D scale was used to measure the elderly's QoL and Time Trade-off model was used to calculate the EQ-5D index. Multiple linear regression and Logistic regression were employed to analyze the association between social determinants and the QoL.RESULTS:There was no statistical significant difference in the QoL between the urban and the rural residents (P>0.05). The elderly with higher education level and income or married tended to have higher overall QoL scores and better performance of five dimensions of the QoL (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:More policies should be focused on the elderly with lower social determinants in both urban and rural areas in Beijing.

Abstract:Aim Few studies have comprehensively evaluated the factors associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the elderly. The purpose of the study is to identify the factors associated with HRQOL using a comprehensive geriatric assessment of community-dwelling elderly people in Beijing, China. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 896 community-dwelling elderly people in Beijing was conducted through face-to-face interviews. Data regarding sociodemographic factors, chronic disease (assessed by the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics, CIRS-G), common geriatric syndromes and HRQOL (assessed by the EuroQol 5-Dimension questionnaire, EQ-5D) were collected using a structured questionnaire. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors related to HRQOL. Results The CIRS-G comorbidity index was negatively related to the EQ-5D index and EQ-Visual Analog Scale (VAS) (P < 0.05). Geriatric syndromes such as chronic pain and non-optimal nutrition were negatively related to HRQOL (P < 0.05), and the negative influence of geriatric syndromes on the EQ-5D index was stronger than that of the cumulative comorbidities. Functional status in daily living activities was positively related to HRQOL (P < 0.05). Receiving care from children was positively related to EQ-VAS (P < 0.05). Conclusions Besides cumulative comorbidities and geriatric syndromes, in particular nutritional problems and chronic pain exert a substantial negative impact on the HRQOL of elderly people in China, whereas family support is an important protective factor. Abstract:Researches outside China show that social support is highly related to quality of life for the older people.Using data from 2002 China Longevity Survey this paper examines impact of social support,in different dimensions,on quality of life of the Chinese elderly.Results from stereotype ordinal logit models controlling demographic,social and health characteristics demonstrate positive effects of social support on quality of life for the elderly,with social support from different sources having had affected differently on the elderly quality of life.

[Methods] 1 201 people in the community were investigated by questionnaires,and SF-36 was used to survey their quality of life. [Results] The prevalence rate of chronic diseases in the community were 54.6%,the quality of life of people with chronic disease was lower than that of general people.The main factors that influenced the quality of life were age,marriage status,economic status,quality of sleep,and so on. [Conclusion] Chronic diseases decrease the quality of life.Comprehensive measures should be taken to improve the quality of life of the people with chronic diseases in the community.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the living conditions of community elders in Jinshan District , Shanghai and analyze the influencing factors .Methods From September to December 2013 , the living conditions of 1 050 community elders (≥60 years old ) in Jinshan District , Shanghai were investigated with the MOS 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scale (Chinese version), and the influencing factors were analyzed by one-way ANOVA analysis.Results The factors including age, marriage situation, education, children, economic situation , physical examination and illness within two weeks significantly influenced the living conditions of the elderly (P<0.01).Chronic disease significantly influenced their health status (P<0.05).Conclusion Several demographic factors and diseases could affect the health status of the community elders in Jinshan Dis -trict, Shanghai .The community elders need more attentions to improve their living conditions and strengthen their chronic disease management .

Abstract:The aging of the rural population is an increasingly influential factor affecting China's social and economic development. By extracting 5450 samples of "rural older adults" with the corresponding entries of housing quality and activities of daily living from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2013, the study yielded an overview of the seniors' housing conditions in China's rural areas. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the potential association between three aspects of housing characteristics (general features, indoor equipment, and spatial composition) and the ADL status of the rural older adults, revealing that the building age, the building style of independent or compound, the type of structure, and whether there are flush toilets and telephone connections indoors, present a significant association with the ADL status. Possible interpretations of the results and strategies for improving the living conditions for the aging rural population were discussed. This study attempts to bridge the knowledge gap related to the housing conditions of seniors in rural China, thereby providing references for planners and policymakers.
