Abstract:Helium isotopes provide an important tool for tracing early-Earth, primordial reservoirs that have survived in the planet's interior. Volcanic hotspot lavas, like those erupted at Hawaii and Iceland, can host rare, high 3He/4He isotopic ratios (up to 50 times the present atmospheric ratio, Ra) compared to the lower 3He/4He ratios identified in mid-ocean-ridge basalts that form by melting the upper mantle (about 8Ra; ref. 5). A long-standing hypothesis maintains that the high-3He/4He domain resides in the deep mantle, beneath the upper mantle sampled by mid-ocean-ridge basalts, and that buoyantly upwelling plumes from the deep mantle transport high-3He/4He material to the shallow mantle beneath plume-fed hotspots. One problem with this hypothesis is that, while some hotspots have 3He/4He values ranging from low to high, other hotspots exhibit only low 3He/4He ratios. Here we show that, among hotspots suggested to overlie mantle plumes, those with the highest maximum 3He/4He ratios have high hotspot buoyancy fluxes and overlie regions with seismic low-velocity anomalies in the upper mantle, unlike plume-fed hotspots with only low maximum 3He/4He ratios. We interpret the relationships between 3He/4He values, hotspot buoyancy flux, and upper-mantle shear wave velocity to mean that hot plumes-which exhibit seismic low-velocity anomalies at depths of 200 kilometres-are more buoyant and entrain both high-3He/4He and low-3He/4He material. In contrast, cooler, less buoyant plumes do not entrain this high-3He/4He material. This can be explained if the high-3He/4He domain is denser than low-3He/4He mantle components hosted in plumes, and if high-3He/4He material is entrained from the deep mantle only by the hottest, most buoyant plumes. Such a dense, deep-mantle high-3He/4He domain could remain isolated from the convecting mantle, which may help to explain the preservation of early Hadean (>4.5 billion years ago) geochemical anomalies in lavas sampling this reservoir.

Abstract:Primordial volatiles were delivered to terrestrial reservoirs during Earth's accretion, and the mantle plume source is thought to have retained a greater proportion of primordial volatiles compared with the upper mantle. This study shows that mantle He, Ne, and Xe isotopes require that the plume mantle had low concentrations of volatiles like Xe and H2O at the end of accretion compared with the upper mantle. A lower extent of mantle processing alone is not sufficient to explain plume noble gas signatures. Ratios of primordial isotopes are used to determine proportions of solar, chondritic, and regassed atmospheric volatiles in the plume mantle and upper mantle. The regassed Ne flux exceeds the regassed Xe flux but has a small impact on the mantle Ne budget. Pairing primordial isotopes with radiogenic systems gives an absolute concentration of 130Xe in the plume source of ∼1.5 × 107 atoms 130Xe/g at the end of accretion, ∼4 times less than that determined for the ancient upper mantle. A record of limited accretion of volatile-rich solids thus survives in the He-Ne-Xe signatures of mantle rocks today. A primordial viscosity contrast originating from a factor of ∼4 to ∼250 times lower H2O concentration in the plume mantle compared with the upper mantle may explain (a) why giant impacts that triggered whole mantle magma oceans did not homogenize the growing planet, (b) why the plume mantle has experienced less processing by partial melting over Earth's history, and (c) how early-formed isotopic heterogeneities may have survived ∼4.5 Gy of solid-state mantle convection.
Core formation and magma ocean outgassing set planetary N-S-C ratios

Abstract:Earth’s volatile elements cannot be accounted for as mixtures of different chondrites, despite their clear chondritic heritage. Early-acting, but as yet unidentified, processes apparently fractionated volatile elements now contained by planets. Here we test the hypothesis that planetary-scale differentiation, namely core formation and primordial atmosphere degassing, set Earth’s distribution of N, S, and C. To this end, we report new metal-silicate partitioning experiments on N up to 26 GPa and 3400 K; the highest pressure and temperatures conditions yet explored. Our results highlight a strong, positive effect of pressure on nitrogen partitioning into cores. We apply our new experiments with literature data for S and C partitioning to a model that couples core formation with degassing into the primordial atmosphere, to demonstrate that volatile elements ratios for Earth, and potentially Mars and Venus, can be set by primordial differentiation under conditions that also satisfy their moderately siderophile element budgets.

Abstract:Significance Volatile elements play a critical role in the evolution of Earth. Nevertheless, the mechanism(s) by which Earth acquired, and was able to preserve its volatile budget throughout its violent accretionary history, remains uncertain. In this study, we analyzed noble gas isotopes in volcanic gases from the Yellowstone mantle plume, thought to sample the deep primordial mantle, to determine the origin of volatiles on Earth. We find that Kr and Xe isotopes within the deep mantle have a similar chondritic origin to those found previously in the upper mantle. This suggests that the Earth has retained chondritic volatiles throughout the accretion and, therefore, terrestrial volatiles cannot not solely be the result of late additions following the Moon-forming impact.

Abstract:The terrestrial abundance anomalies of helium and xenon suggest the presence of deep-Earth reservoirs of these elements, which has led to great interest in searching for materials that can host these usually unreactive elements. Here, using an advanced crystal structure search approach in conjunction with first-principles calculations, we show that several Xe/He-bearing iron halides are thermodynamically stable in a broad region of P–T phase space below 60 GPa. Our results present a compelling case for sequestration of He and Xe in the early Earth and may suggest their much wider distribution in the present Earth than previously believed. These findings offer insights into key material-based and physical mechanisms for elucidating major geological phenomena.

Abstract:Significance The recent discovery of anomalous 182 W signatures in modern, plume-derived hotspot lavas provides evidence for survival of domains in Earth’s interior since the early Hadean. Only lavas with ancient, high- 3 He/ 4 He signatures preserve anomalous 182 W signatures. However, it is not known why only high- 3 He/ 4 He lavas have anomalous 182 W, while other hotspot lavas do not. We show that only hotspot lavas lacking strong recycled crust signatures exhibit high 3 He/ 4 He and anomalous 182 W. This observation is explained by subduction of W- and 4 He-rich crust that has low 3 He/ 4 He and normal 182 W: Following subduction, the crust masks high- 3 He/ 4 He and anomalous 182 W signatures characteristic of ancient mantle domains. Our model links destruction of Hadean geochemical signatures with the geodynamic process of plate subduction and recycling.
The Origin of Mafic Microgranular Enclaves in Granitoids: Insights from in Situ Sr Isotope of Plagioclases and Zr-Hf Isotopes of Zircons

Abstract:Mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) are common in many granitoid plutons and their origin is crucial for understanding the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of their hosts. Most previous workers have studied MMEs by using in situ zircon U-Pb and Hf-O isotopes. However, whether the zircons in the MMEs recorded the primary isotopes of their host MMEs is not well constrained. Here, two MMEs from the Daocheng (DC-2) and Dongcuo (HZS-3) granitic plutons, as well as their host granites, in the Triassic Yidun arc belt, eastern Tibetan Plateau, were studied. The MMEs have zircon U-Pb ages of 219 +/- 3 Ma and 225 +/- 3 Ma respectively, similar to their host granites. They also have similar or slightly depleted zircon Lu-Hf isotopes to their host granites. Furthermore, zircons from the Dongcuo pluton have indistinguishable Ti-in-zircon temperatures (T-zr) and Th/U ratios from those of their host granites, whereas zircons from the Daocheng pluton have higher T-zr values and Th/U ratios than those of their host granites. Model calculations indicate that the whole-rock composition of the studied MMEs was different from the melt composition from which the zircon grains grew. Additionally, zircon from Daocheng sample DC-2 has larger variations of Zr stable isotopes than its host granite, whereas those of Dongcuo sample HZS-3 have lower delta Zr-94/90(IPGp-zr) values than its host granite. Previous study suggests that early crystallized zircons will have lighter Zr isotopes. Thus, based on our new data, we propose that zircons from Dongcuo were actually xenocrysts that formed at an early stage in the granitic magma chamber, whereas those from Daocheng crystallized during magma mixing. Thus, none of the zircons in this study have recorded the primary isotopes of the MMEs. In addition, there are also many An-rich plagioclase crystals in the MMEs from both localities and the initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios of these plagioclases are quite heterogeneous. Both of the samples (DC-2 and HZS-3) record three peaks of 0.7078, 0.7064 and 0.7030, and 0.7087, 0.7096 and 0.7105, respectively, which record the primary Sr isotopes of the MMEs, as well as details of the interaction between the mantle-derived and crust-derived magmas. The lowest initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio peak was lower than the arc volcanic rocks but similar to those of MORBs in the Jinshajiang suture zone of the area. Therefore, the primary magma of the MMEs was likely derived from a depleted mantle source. We propose that in situ Sr isotopes of Anrich plagioclase and Zr isotopes of zircon can be powerful tools in deciphering the petrogenesis of MMEs. To simply use the zircon Hf-O isotopes to constrain the primary composition of MMEs is not adequate for determining their origin.

Abstract:From iodine-plutonium-xenon isotope systematics, we re-evaluate time constraints on the early evolution of the Earth-atmosphere system and, by inference, on the Moon-forming event. Two extinct radioactivites (129I, T1/2 = 15.6 Ma, and 244Pu, T1/2 = 80 Ma) have produced radiogenic 129Xe and fissiogenic 131-136Xe, respectively, within the Earth, which related isotope fingerprints are seen in the compositions of mantle and atmospheric Xe. Recent studies of Archean rocks suggest that xenon atoms have been lost from the Earth's atmosphere and isotopically fractionated during long periods of geological time, until at least the end of the Archean eon. Here we build a model that takes into account these results. Correction for Xe loss permits to compute new closure ages for the Earth's atmosphere that are in agreement with those computed for mantle Xe. The minimum Xe formation interval for the Earth- atmosphere is 40 (-10+20) Ma after start of solar system formation, which may also date the Moon-forming impact.

Abstract:Hydrogen isotopic compositions of three mantle-derived clinopyroxene megacrysts from Cenozoic basalts at Hannuoba have been measured by ion microprobe. Heterogeneity occurs in a single grain, deltaD variation is up to 60 parts per thousand on the scale of 2mm. No correlation exists between deltaD values and hydrogen contents and chemical compositions are homogeneous, so the hydrogen isotope variations are considered to be inherited from parent magma. We suggest that the deltaD scatter of the parent magma could be related to D/H fractionations between vapor and melt during magma degassing. Shortly after the formation of clinopyroxene megacrysts, they are brought to the surface by the host magma and underwent quenching.

Abstract:Oxygen isotopic compositions and trace element contents of minerals from 9 peridotite xenoliths hosted by Cenozoic basalts\ in Nushan, SE China have been obtained by laser fluorination method and LA-ICP-MS respectively. Some samples dont show oxygen isotope equilibrium between pyroxene and olivine with the lowest Delta O-18(Cpx) ( = delta O-18(Cpx)-delta O-18(OI)) of -0.5 parts per thousand. Clinopyroxenes from the amphibole-bearing xenoliths are enriched in LILE (Sr, Th, LREE) and depleted in HFSE (Nb, Zr, Ti). Oxygen isotope data suggest that the Nushan upper mantle experienced metasomatism by oceanic fluids from the subducted plate. Based on the negative correlation between Delta O-18(Cpx-01) and formation depth of Nushan xenoliths, we propose an "ascending + buffering" model for mantle metasomatism in Nushan. The degree of oxygen isotopic disequilibrium is not related with LILE enrichment and HFSE depletion, suggesting at least two metasomatic events happened in the Nushan mantle, one was responsible to LILE enrichment/HFSE depletion and another to oxygen isotopic disequilibrium.

Abstract:Clues to unraveling the origin and history of terrestrial volatiles lie in the noble gas record of Earth's mantle. However, the low abundance of heavy noble gases (Ar-Kr-Xe) in mantle-derived rocks presents a major analytical challenge that limits our understanding of mantle volatile evolution. Here, we employ a new technique of ultrahigh precision dynamic mass spectrometry to measure Ar-Kr-Xe isotopes in mantle-derived gas collected from Mt. Etna (Italy) and Eifel (Germany), which both tap depleted convecting mantle reservoirs. We find that the fractions of primordial Kr-Xe from accretionary sources (≤ 7 % of non-radiogenic, non-fissiogenic isotopes) and 244 Pu-derived 136 Xe (≤ 9.8 ± 9.3 % of total fissiogenic Xe) are both markedly lower than previously estimated. For Mt. Etna, we find an apparent lack of detectable primordial Xe, which could reflect an additional contribution from recycled atmospheric volatiles from nearby subduction. In addition, slight excesses of 238 U-derived fissiogenic Xe relative to the upper mantle composition may reflect the contribution of a crustal component related to the occurrence of a HIMU ("high μ" where μ = 238 U/ 204 Pb)-type source in Mt. Etna volcanic products. The low primordial heavy noble gas and 244 Pu-derived Xe contents of Earth's convecting mantle, as derived from these new data, requires extensive volatile loss during terrestrial accretion, followed by long-term degassing and pervasive overprinting of primordial heavy noble gases by subduction recycling. In addition, we suggest that quantitative incompatible element (including Pu, U) extraction to the Hadean crust and subsequent reintroduction of U via subduction could have contributed to lowering the ultimate fraction of 244 Pu-derived 136 Xe in the upper mantle. The differences observed between this study and other upper mantle Xe studies may reflect mantle source heterogeneities (e.g. due to the heterogeneous overprinting of mantle volatiles by subduction) but could also result from analytical inconsistencies and/or subsurface isotope fractionation in natural systems. Future studies are crucial to gain insight into the origin of these different results.

Anomalously High Δd and Micro-Scale Hydrogen Isotope Heterogeneities in the Mantle: Ion Microprobe Analysis of Amiboles from Peridotite Xenoliths at Nushan, Eastern China

Abstract:Hydrogen isotopic compositions of four amphibole grains from three pieces of lherzolite xenoliths in Cenozoic basanites of Nushan, eastern China have been analyzed by ion microprobe. δD values of all analyzed points range from −94‰ to +46‰, some of which are much higher than the highest δD (+8‰) reported previously for mantle materials. The heterogeneities of D/H ratios within single grains have been observed, the variation of δD is up to 80‰ on the scale of less than 400 μm. No correlation between hydrogen isotopic ratios and hydrogen contents can be found, implying that the scatter of δD values could not result from a late shallow process such as hydrogen loss or hydrothermal alterations and should be considered as inherited from the source at depth. Chemical compositions of Nushan amphiboles are very homogeneous, excluding the fact that the scatter of δD values could arise from variable fractionation factors between a single fluid source and minerals. Therefore, metasomatic fluids responsible for the formation of Nushan amphiboles should be heterogeneous and result in the observed large variable and anomalously high δD values of amphiboles. We suggested that such metasomatic fluids could be related to magma degassing in the mantle source. Based on the D-H diffusion data and the scale of hydrogen isotope heterogeneities, it was inferred that the mantle metasomatism took place soon before the eruption of host magma.
Partitioning of Noble Gases (he, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) During Earth’s Core Segregation: A Possible Core Reservoir for Primordial Noble Gases

Abstract:Noble gas isotopes in plume-influenced oceanic-island basalts (OIBs) clearly indicate the existence of distinct reservoirs somewhere in the deep Earth that are characterized by their more primitive noble gas isotopic signatures. As one of the largest differentiated layers on Earth, whether the Earth's liquid outer core can preserve 'primordial' noble gases is fundamental for better understanding the Earth's formation and the mantle evolution. Since Earth's core is believed to have formed via liquid iron segregated from magma ocean during the planetary accretion stage, how much noble gases could have been incorporated into Earth's core depends on the partitioning of noble gases between liquid metal and molten silicates. In this study, we perform thermodynamic integration (TI) calculations based on first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulation to investigate the partition coefficients of noble gases (NG: He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) between liquid Fe and MgSiO3 melt. The simulations have been performed by adopting conditions that the pressures are from 10 similar to 135 GPa and the temperatures from 2300 similar to 5000 K to fully account for possible core-mantle equilibrium conditions. By analyzing the temperature and pressure dependence of the results, we suggest that the metal-silicate partitioning of noble gases (D-NG) merely depends on the temperature, with extremely low D-NG < 0.001 at temperatures < 2500 K (20 GPa), but increases to different degrees at high temperatures. The D-NG tends to be more affected by temperature as the noble gas atomic mass increases, with the least temperature effect on the partition coefficient of He (D-He), which increases from similar to 10(-3) at 2300 K (10 GPa) to similar to 10(-1)- (5000 K, 135 GPa) near the core-mantle boundary (CMB), and D-Ne = 10(-6) similar to 10(-3), D-Ar = 10(-6) similar to 10(-2), D-Kr = 10(-7) similar to 10(-1) and D-Xe = 10(-5) similar to 10(0) from 2300 to 5000 K, respectively. Analysis of electronic interactions indicates that noble gases have positive chemical bonding with Fe, Mg, and Si atoms, and the bonding strengths increase with pressure as well as increasing noble gas atomic mass. Based on our calculated partition coefficients, we suggest that Earth's core may have preserved significant amounts of noble gases considering the volatile-rich environment from which the core segregated. Xenon isotopic constraints on the history of volatile recycling into the mantle

Abstract:The long-term exchange of volatile species (such as water, carbon, nitrogen and the noble gases) between deep Earth and surface reservoirs controls the habitability of the Earth’s surface. The present-day volatile budget of the mantle reflects the integrated history of outgassing and retention of primordial volatiles delivered to the planet during accretion, volatile species generated by radiogenic ingrowth and volatiles transported into the mantle from surface reservoirs over time. Variations in the distribution of volatiles between deep Earth and surface reservoirs affect the viscosity, cooling rate and convective stress state of the solid Earth. Accordingly, constraints on the flux of surface volatiles transported into the deep Earth improve our understanding of mantle convection and plate tectonics. However, the history of surface volatile regassing into the mantle is not known. Here we use mantle xenon isotope systematics to constrain the age of initiation of volatile regassing into the deep Earth. Given evidence of prolonged evolution of the xenon isotopic composition of the atmosphere1,2, we find that substantial recycling of atmospheric xenon into the deep Earth could not have occurred before 2.5 billion years ago. Xenon concentrations in downwellings remained low relative to ambient convecting mantle concentrations throughout the Archaean era, and the mantle shifted from a net degassing to a net regassing regime after 2.5 billion years ago. Because xenon is carried into the Earth’s interior in hydrous mineral phases3–5, our results indicate that downwellings were drier in the Archaean era relative to the present. Progressive drying of the Archean mantle would allow slower convection and decreased heat transport out of the mantle, suggesting non-monotonic thermal evolution of the Earth’s interior.

Superionic Xenon–water Compounds under High Pressure

Abstract:The reaction of water ice with other substances or compounds under high temperatures and pressures have important implications for the composition and evolution of planetary interiors. In recent years, the exploration for stable compounds of the noble gases xenon combined with water ice has been a concern in field of high-pressure science. To explore this question, using crystal structure predictions and first-principles calculations, we found stable xenon-water compounds at high pressure. Further molecular dynamics simulations show that the Xe-H2O compounds exhibit superionic states behavior at high temperature and pressure conditions, in which the xenon and oxygen atoms framework is fixed and hydrogen atoms diffuse freely like a liquid. The insertion of xenon atoms may alter the superionicity of pure water, reducing the pressure and temperature that superionic states is formed.

Abstract:The observation that many lavas associated with mantle plumes have higher 3He/4He ratios than the upper convecting mantle underpins geophysical, geodynamic and geochemical models of Earth's deep interior. High 3He/4He ratios are thought to derive from the solar nebula or from solar-wind-irradiated material that became incorporated into Earth during early planetary accretion. Traditionally, this high-3He/4He component has been considered intrinsic to the mantle, having avoided outgassing caused by giant impacts and billions of years of mantle convection1-4. Here we report the highest magmatic 3He/4He ratio(67.2 ± 1.8 times the atmospheric ratio) yet measured in terrestrial igneous rocks, in olivines from Baffin Island lavas. We argue that the extremely high-3He/4He helium in these lavas might derive from Earth's core5-9. The viability of the core hypothesis relaxes the long-standing constraint-based on noble gases in lavas associated with mantle plumes globally-that volatile elements from the solar nebula have survived in the mantle since the early stages of accretion.
High P-T experimental perspective on Cr isotopic fractionation during planetary core formation

Abstract:Core formation may modify the stable isotopic signatures for both the mantles and cores of differentiated planetary bodies. We performed high P-T experiments with a piston-cylinder apparatus at 1 GPa and 1873-2073 K to determine the Cr isotopic fractionation factor during metal-silicate segregation. Experimental results consistently indicate that the metal phase is isotopically heavier than the coexisting silicate phase, with Δ53Crmetal-silicate up to 0.3‰ at the investigated experimental conditions. Oxygen fugacity, silicate composition, and S content in the metal phase do not have significant effects on the Cr isotopic fractionation factor. By contrast, increasing Ni content in the metal increases the Δ53Crmetal-silicate value, implying that the Ni content of the core could influence planetary isotopic signatures. We conclude that heavier Cr isotopes enter the core preferentially during planetary core formation. The δ53Cr value of the terrestrial mantle could be lowered by up to ∼0.02‰ by core formation, despite that this is within current analytical uncertainty of chondritic Cr isotopic composition. For smaller bodies such as the Moon, Mars, and Vesta, the lower core formation temperatures could potentially generate a resolvable core-mantle Cr isotopic fractionation. However, the Moon's small core size would limit the change in the Cr isotopic composition of the lunar mantle compared to chondritic. For Vesta and Mars, core formation could lower the δ53Cr values of their mantles by ∼0.01-0.02‰, which is trivial relative to the analytical uncertainty. On the other hand, core formation could increase the δ53Cr values of the cores of the parent bodies of iron meteorites by up to ∼0.2‰ at 1873 K. Therefore, the significantly heavy Cr isotopic composition (up to 2.85‰) of iron meteorites cannot be explained by equilibrium fractionation between the core and the mantle of the parent bodies of iron meteorites.

Abstract:Nucleosynthetic isotopic anomalies in meteorites and planetary objects contribute to our understanding of the formation of the solar system. Isotope systematics of chondrites demonstrate the existence of a physical separation between isotopic reservoirs in the solar system. The isotopic composition of atmospheric xenon (Xe) indicates that its progenitor, U-Xe, is depleted in 134Xe and 136Xe isotopes relative to Solar or Chondritic end-members. This deficit supports the view that nucleosynthetic heterogeneities persisted during the Solar System formation. Measurements of xenon emitted from comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) identified a similar, but more extreme, deficit of cometary gas in these isotopes relative to Solar gas. Here we show that the data from 67P demonstrate that two distinct sources contributed xenon isotopes associated with the r-process to the solar system. The h-process contributed at least 29% (2sigmas) of solar system 136Xe. Mixtures of these r-process components and the s-process that match the heavy isotope signature of cometary Xe lead to depletions of the precursor of atmospheric Xe in p-only isotopes. Only the addition of pure p-process Xe to the isotopic mixture brings 124Xe/132Xe and 126Xe/132Xe ratios back to solar-like values. No pure p-process Xe has been detected in solar system material, and variation in p-process Xe isotopes is always correlated with variation in r-process Xe isotopes. In the solar system, p-process incorporation from the interstellar medium happened before incorporation of r-process nuclides or material in the outer edge of the solar system carries a different mixture of presolar sources as have been preserved in parent bodies.

Abstract:Nitrogen is essential to life, and yet is also the most depleted element in the Earth relative to gas-rich chondrites. A key expression of Earth's N depletion is its elevated sulfur-nitrogen (S/N) ratio. Primordial stratification into a core, mantle, and atmosphere is the largest mass transfer process that terrestrial planets experience, but the data required to evaluate how S/N ratios respond to primordial stratification of Earth-sized planets do not exist. We report new metal-silicate partitioning experiments on N up to 26 GPa and 3437 K. Our data indicate that nitrogen becomes more siderophile with increasing pressure and less siderophile with increasing carbon and nickel in the metal phase. We apply our new experiments with literature data for S partitioning to a core formation-primordial atmosphere degassing model. Our model demonstrates that the S/N ratio of the observable Earth can be set during primordial stratification under the same extreme P-T conditions that satisfy refractory siderophile element budgets while also yielding a bulk planet with S contents near that estimated from Earth's volatility trend.
