Abstract:By using a multilayer composite ab initio method ONION-G3B3, we calculated O-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of 58 oximes that were measured experimentally. Experimental BDEs derived from thermal decomposition kinetics and calorimetric measurements were found to be consistent with the theory. However, the electrochemical method was found to give questionably high BDEs possibly due to errors in the measurement of pKa's or redox potentials. Subsequently, the performances of a variety of DFT functionals including B3LYP, B3P86, B3PW91, BHandH, BHandHLYP, BMK, PBE1PBE, MPW1KCIS, mPWPW91, MPW1B95, and MPW1K were tested to calculate oxime O-H BDEs, where ROBHandHLYP was found to be the most accurate. By using this method, we calculated O-H BDEs of over 140 oximes in a systematic fashion. All of the calculated O-H BDEs fell in the range from 76.8 to 89.8 kcal/mol. An amino group on the azomethine carbon was found to strengthen the O-H bond, whereas bulky alkyl substituents on oximes decreased O-H BDEs due to their large steric-strain-relieving effects in the process of O-H bond cleavage. Para substituents had little effect on the BDEs of benzaldoximes and phenyl methyl ketoximes. Finally, on the basis of a spin distribution calculation, aryl-, alkyl-, and carbonyl-substituted iminoxyl radicals were found to be sigma-radicals, whereas amino-substituted iminoxyl radicals were of pi-structure.
Electron Affinities And Electronic Structures Of O-, M-, And P-Hydroxyphenoxyl Radicals: A Combined Low-Temperature Photoelectron Spectroscopic And Ab Initio Calculation Study

Abstract:Hydroxyl substituted phenoxides, o-, m-, p-HO(C6H4)O-, and the corresponding neutral radicals are important species; in particular, the p-isomer pair, i.e., p-HO(C6H4)O- and p-HO(C6H4)O center dot, is directly involved in the proton-coupled electron transfer in biological photosynthetic centers. Here we report the first spectroscopic study of these species in the gas phase by means of low-temperature photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and ab initio calculations. Vibrationally resolved PES spectra were obtained at 70 K and at several photon energies for each anion, directly yielding electron affinity (EA) and electronic structure information for the corresponding hydroxyphenoxyl radical. The EAs are found to vary with OH positions, from 1.990 +/- 0.010 (p) to 2.315 +/- 0.010 (o) and 2.330 +/- 0.010 (m) eV. Theoretical calculations were carried out to identify the optimized molecular structures for both anions and neutral radicals. The electron binding energies and excited state energies were also calculated to compare with experimental data. Excellent agreement is found between calculations and experiments. Molecular orbital analyses indicate a strong OH antibonding interaction with the phenoxide moiety for the o- as well as the p-isomer, whereas such an interaction is largely missing for the m-anion. The variance of EAs among three isomers is interpreted primarily due to the interplay between two competing factors: the OH antibonding interaction and the H-bonding stabilization (existed only in the o-anion).

Abstract:Functionalization of alpha-C-H bonds of tertiary amines to build various alpha-C-X bonds has become a mainstream in synthetic chemistry nowadays. However, due to lack of fundamental knowledge on alpha-C-H bond strength as an energetic guideline, rational exploration of new synthetic methodologies remains a far-reaching anticipation. Herein, we report a unique hydricity-based approach to establish the first integrated energetic scale covering both the homolytic and heterolytic energies of alpha-C-H bonds for 45 representative tertiary amines and their radical cations. As showcased from the studies on tetrahy-droisoquinolines (THIQs) by virtue of their thermodynamic criteria, the feasibility and mechanisms of THIQ oxidation were deduced, which, indeed, were found to correspond well with experimental observations. This integrated scale provides a good example to relate bond energetics with mechanisms and thermodynamic reactivity of amine alpha-C-H functionalization and hence, may be referenced for analyzing similar structure-property problems for various substrates.

Abstract:Hydroxyl radical reduction and peroxide bond breaking in hydrogen peroxide are reactions involved in various processes such as the Fenton reaction, which has applications as e.g. groundwater remediation. Here, we study these two reactions from a thermodynamical point of view through the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the O–O bond in hydrogen peroxide and the electron affinity (EA) of the hydroxyl radical. High-level ab-initio calculations at the complete basis set (CBS) limit were carried out, and the performance of different DFT-based methods was addressed by following a specific classification on the basis of the Jacob’s ladder in combination with various Pople’s basis sets. The ab-initio calculations at the CBS limit are in agreement with experimental reference data and identify a significant contribution of the electron correlation energy to the BDE and EA. The studied DFT-based methods were able to reproduce the ab-initio reference values, although no functional was particularly detected as the best for both reactions. The inclusion of certain percentage of Hartree–Fock (HF) exchange in DFT functionals leads in most cases to smaller BDE and EA values, which might be related to the poor description of the two reactions by the HF method. Considering the computational cost, DFT methods provide better BDE and EA values than HF methods with an accuracy comparable to the MP2 or CCSD level of theory. Additionally, the quality of the hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and hydroxyl anion structures obtained from these functionals was compared to experimental reference data. In general, bond lengths were well reproduced and the errors in the angles were between one and two degrees with some systematic trend with respect to the basis set’s size. From our results we conclude that DFT methods present a computationally less expensive alternative to describe these two reactions that play a role in the Fenton reaction. Abstract:Alkoxyamines are heat-labile molecules, widely used as an in situ source of nitroxides in polymer and materials sciences. Here we show that the one-electron oxidation of an alkoxyamine leads to a cation radical intermediate that even at room temperature rapidly fragments, releasing a nitroxide and carbocation. Digital simulations of experimental voltammetry and current-time transients suggest that the unimolecular decomposition which yields the "unmasked" nitroxide (TEMPO) is exceedingly rapid and irreversible. High-level quantum computations indicate that the collapse of the alkoxyamine cation radical is likely to yield a neutral nitroxide radical and a secondary phenylethyl cation. However, this fragmentation is predicted to be slow and energetically very unfavorable. To attain qualitative agreement between the experimental kinetics and computational modeling for this fragmentation step, the explicit electrostatic environment within the double layer must be accounted for. Single-molecule break-junction experiments in a scanning tunneling microscope using solvent of low dielectric (STM-BJ technique) corroborate the role played by electrostatic forces on the lysis of the alkoxyamine C-ON bond. This work highlights the electrostatic aspects played by charged species in a chemical step that follows an electrochemical reaction, defines the magnitude of this catalytic effect by looking at an independent electrical technique in non-electrolyte systems (STM-BJ), and suggests a redox on/off switch to guide the cleavage of alkoxyamines at an electrified interface.
Long-range interactions in the ozone molecule: spectroscopic and dynamical points of view

Abstract:Using the multipolar expansion of the electrostatic energy, we have characterized the asymptotic interactions between an oxygen atom O$(^3P)$ and an oxygen molecule O$_2(^3\Sigma_g^-)$, both in their electronic ground state. We have calculated the interaction energy induced by the permanent electric quadrupoles of O and O$_2$ and the van der Waals energy. On one hand we determined the 27 electronic potential energy surfaces including spin-orbit connected to the O$(^3P)$ + O$_2(^3\Sigma_g^-)$ dissociation limit of the O--O$_2$ complex. On the other hand we computed the potential energy curves characterizing the interaction between O$(^3P)$ and a O$_2(^3\Sigma_g^-)$ molecule in its lowest vibrational level and in a low rotational level. Such curves are found adiabatic to a good approximation, namely they are only weakly coupled to each other. These results represent a first step for modeling the spectroscopy of ozone bound levels close to the dissociation limit, as well as the low energy collisions between O and O$_2$ thus complementing the knowledge relevant for the ozone formation mechanism.

Abstract:Classical molecular dynamics has been performed with explicit polarization on NaOH aqueous solutions from 0.5 mol L–1 up to 9.7 mol L–1. We adapted a force field of OH– for polarizable simulation in order to reproduce the NaOH structural and thermodynamics properties in aqueous solutions. A good agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been found. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) intensities issued from molecular dynamics are compared to experimental ones measured on Synchrotron facilities. The structure of the first coordination shell of Na+ has been studied to determine the variation of the oxygen number and hydroxide oxygen around the cation. In addition, Na+–OH– McMillan-Mayer potential issued from molecular dynamics simulations has been calculated and allows for calculating Na+–OH– pair association constant of 0.1 L mol–1, which is in good agreement with the experiments.
A New Ab Initio Potential-Energy Surface of HO2(X2A″) and Quantum Studies of HO2 Vibrational Spectrum and Rate Constants for the H+O2↔O+OH Reactions

Abstract:A new global potential-energy surface for the ground electronic state of HO2(X2A″) has been developed by three-dimensional cubic spline interpolation of more than 15 000 ab initio points, which were calculated at the multireference configuration-interaction level with Davidson correction using the augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple zeta basis set. Low-lying vibrational states were obtained in this new potential using the Lanczos method and assigned. The calculated vibrational frequencies are in much better agreement with the available experimental band origins than those obtained from a previous potential. In addition, rate constants for the H+O2↔O+OH reactions were obtained using a wave-packet-based statistical model. Reasonably good agreement with experimental data was obtained. These results demonstrate the accuracy of the potential.
Quantum-chemical Predictions of Redox Potentials of Organic Anions in Dimethyl Sulfoxide and Reevaluation of Bond Dissociation Enthalpies Measured by the Electrochemical Methods.

Abstract:A first-principle theoretical protocol was developed that could predict the absolute pK(a) values of over 250 structurally unrelated compounds in DMSO with a precision of 1.4 pK(a) units. On this basis we developed the first theoretical protocol that could predict the standard redox potentials of over 250 structurally unrelated organic anions in DMSO with a precision of 0.11 V. Using the two new protocols we systematically reevaluated the bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) measured previously by the electrochemical methods. It was confirmed that for most compounds the empirical equation (BDE = 1.37 pK(HA) + 23.1E(o) + constant) was valid. The constant in this equation was determined to be 74.0 kcal/mol, compared to 73.3 kcal/mol previously reported. Nevertheless, for a few compounds the empirical equation could not be used because the solvation energy changed dramatically during the bond cleavage, which resulted from the extraordinary change of dipole moment during the reaction. In addition, we found 40 compounds (mostly oximes and amides) for which the experimental values were questionable by over 5 kcal/mol. Further analyses revealed that all these questionable BDEs could be explained by one of the three following reasons: (1) the experimental pK(a) value is questionable; (2) the experimental redox potential is questionable; (3) the solvent effect cannot be neglected. Thus, by developing practical theoretical methods and utilizing them to solve realistic problems, we hope to demonstrate that ab initio theoretical methods can now be developed to make not only reliable, but also useful, predictions for solution-phase organic chemistry.
The nature of the NO bond in amine oxides

Abstract:Abstract Despite the ubiquitous presence of amine oxides in chemistry, there is no consensus about the nature of the NO bond in these compounds. In this work, we have used electron density analysis to investigate the nature of this bond in substituted amine oxides, R 3 NO, and have compared it with the nature of the NO bond in hydroxylamines, R 2 NOR, and model molecules that have well‐established chemical bond character. The results showed that the NO bond length and relative stability are proportional to the inductive effect of the substituents. Quantum chemical topology, natural bond orbitals (NBO), and natural resonance theory (NRT) analyses indicated that the NO bond is polar covalent in all the studied amine oxides, but the ionic contribution is different. NBO and NRT analyses revealed that molecules with more electronegative substituents have strongly delocalized NO and NR bonds, whereas molecules with electropositive substituents have localized bonds.

Abstract:The equilibrium acidities in DMSO of nine p-and NI-substituted benzaldoximes and eight p-substituted phenyl methyl ketoximes were measured. Estimates of the homolytic bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of the acidic O-H bonds in these compounds were made by combination of their pK(HA) values with the oxidation potentials of their conjugate bases, E-ox(A(-)), using the equation BDE = 1.37pK(HA) + 23.06E(ox)(A(-)) + 73.3 kcal (1 kcal = 4.184 KJ). Plots of E-ox(A(-)) vs pK(HA) for p-substituted benzaldoximes and p-substituted phenyl methyl ketoximes were linear with slopes near unity. Consequently, as required by the above equation, the BDEs estimated for the O-H bonds in these oximes were constant, being 88.3 + 0.3 and 89.2 +/- 0.4 kcal, respectively. Abstract:This study delves into the fragmentation mechanisms of the oxazolone form (OXA) of protonated cyclo-di-glycine using chemical dynamics simulations. In this way, we were able to capture the intricate dissociation pathways for different internal energies of the system. By transforming molecular geometries into graph representations, we systematically analyze fragmentation processes and identify key intermediates and ion-molecule complexes (IMCs) that play a crucial role in fragmentation dynamics. The study highlights the distinct isomerization landscapes of OXA, driven by IMC formation, which contrasts with the previously reported behavior of cyclic and linear forms [Perez Mellor et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2021, 155, 124103]. The resulting fragmentation channels are characterized by their distinct energetic thresholds and branching ratios and can provide a molecular explanation of what was observed experimentally. Thanks to an accurate analysis of the trajectories using our graph-theory-based tools, it was possible to point out the particular behavior of OXA fragmentation, which is different from other isomers. In particular, the important role of IMCs is shown, which has an impact in populating different isomeric structures.

Abstract:Trends for R-X bond dissociation energies have been examined with density functional methods of B3LYP, BMK, M06-2X, MC3MPW, B2PLYP, MCG3-MPW, and XYG3, as well as G3, MCG3/3, G3X, and G4 theories as functions of alkylation (i.e., R(•) = Me, Et, i-Pr, t-Bu) and X(•) substitution (i.e., X(•) = H, Me, Cl, OH). The results highlight the physical origin of success or failure of each method and demonstrate the good agreement with experimental results for G4, MCG3-MPW, and XYG3. The last holds great promise as a reliable method that is applicable to larger systems.

Abstract:Most organic transformation involves cleavage and formation of various covalent bonds, and naturally, can be regarded as a process of bond reorganization, which should be intrinsically related to bond energies (e.g., pK(a), BDE, etc.). However, in many cases such as in C-H bond activation/functionalization, direct correspondence between the bond energy and reaction rate or other relevant properties is only occasionally observed when applying the bond data by simple rules like the Linear Free-Energy Relationships (LFERs) in handling intricate reaction systems. In this Perspective, we present examples to argue that the above mentioned situation is not a consequence of a diminishing role of the bond energetics in research, but most likely, comes from an improper use of energetic strategy, or simply due to a faulty selection of the data from unsuitable sources. Some advisable applications of bond energies in unscrambling the problems in modern day chemistry are exemplified through representative recent advances of the researches in this connection. Some of the possible directions of future research endeavors in the field of bond energetics and its prudent applications are recommended.

Abstract:Oximes are considered as versatile pharmacophores in discovery new class of medicinally active agents. The incorporation of hydroxylamine‐containing moieties to the carbonyl compounds can generate variety oximes. The current review focused on 49 reports, describing about various activities, including antimicrobial, anticancer, anti‐inflammatory, antihyperglycemic, insecticidal, and antioxidant activities. Oximes, belonging to imines with the general formula of RR'C=NOH, are produced by the nucleophilic addition reaction between hydroxylamine with ketones or aldehydes, yielding corresponding aldoxime and ketoxime. The presence of hydrogen bond acceptor and donor is the classical feature of oxime‐containing structural framework. This review presents a summary of the role of oximes and its structure activity relationships including antimicrobial, anticancer, anti‐inflammatory, antihyperglycemic, insecticidal agents, along with their involvement in the treatment of organophosphorus poisoning. The review also focused on the pharmacological profile of lead molecules of several classes of oxime‐containing compounds.

Abstract:Energy/enthalpy of intermolecular hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in crystals have been calculated in many papers. Most of the theoretical works used non-periodic models. Their applicability for describing intermolecular H-bonds in solids is not obvious since the crystal environment can strongly change H-bond geometry and energy in comparison with non-periodic models. Periodic DFT computations provide a reasonable description of a number of relevant properties of molecular crystals. However, these methods are quite cumbersome and time-consuming compared to non-periodic calculations. Here, we present a fast quantum approach for estimating the energy/enthalpy of intermolecular H-bonds in crystals. It has been tested on a family of crystalline peroxosolvates in which the H∙∙∙O bond set fills evenly (i.e., without significant gaps) the range of H∙∙∙O distances from ~1.5 to ~2.1 Å typical for strong, moderate, and weak H-bonds. Four of these two-component crystals (peroxosolvates of macrocyclic ethers and creatine) were obtained and structurally characterized for the first time. A critical comparison of the approaches for estimating the energy of intermolecular H-bonds in organic crystals is carried out, and various sources of errors are clarified.
