Abstract:Among practical anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), SiOx has garnered substantial attention owing to its relatively low volumetric variation and high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the volumetric change of micro-SiOx remains a formidable challenge for existing adhesives. Here, we propose an innovative design strategy that amalgamates both rigidity and flexibility, in which rigid anion gum Arabic (GA), flexible acrylic random copolymer (ARC), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) interwoven into a 3D network with strong interfacial adhesion and excellent mechanical properties. These attributes effectively restrict SiOx particles and favor a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formed on SiOx. Here, GA plays a pivotal role in dispersing CNTs and maintaining their consistent proximity to SiOx, thereby establishing stable electron conduction networks. The SiOx electrode still sustains a specific capacity of 760 mAh g � 1 after 350 cycles under a high current of 1C. Additionally, at 0.2C, the SiOx electrode attains a notably high capacity of 1105 mAh g � 1 with a capacity retention of 72.9 % at the 300th cycle, while exhibiting an excellent areal capacity of 1.4 mAh cm-2 even after 400 cycles. This work develops a straightforward yet highly efficacious approach for fabricating high areal capacity electrodes and offers promising prospects for improving the stableness of Si-based anodes.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered as the most promising candidate for anode materials in the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Regulating the morphology and structure of Si plays a vital role in alleviating the volume expansion and improving electronic conductivity. Herein, an ingenious core-shell structure (denoted as CoMOE-D@Si@C) is synthesized by depositing Si uniformly on the pyrolytic metal-organic frameworks (MOF5) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then encapsulated with a carbon shell. The CoMOF-D@Si@C exhibits excellent rate capability and cycle performance, which delivers a high-rate capability of 957 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) and a reversible capacity of 1493 mAh g(-1) after 400 cycles. In particular, the capacity is maintained at 648 mAh g -1 after 1200 cycles at a high current density of 4 A g(-1) with a rapid increase of the Coulombic efficiency (CE) to 99.8% after only 5 cycles and the average CE (99.7%) in the whole cycling at 4 A g(-1) . Profiting from the outer carbon shell, uniform Si deposition and inner porous pyrolytic MOF structure, this architecture can maintain structural stability and provide constructive conductivity during cycling processes. The superior electrochemical performance of the CoMOF-D@Si@C composite makes it a promising anode material for LIBs. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Silicon is regarded as the next generation anode material for lithium-ion batteries because of its high specific capacity, low intercalation potential and abundant reserves. However, huge volume changes during the lithiation and delithiation processes and low electrical conductivity obstruct the practical applications of silicon anodes. In this study, a treble-shelled porous silicon (TS-P-Si) structure was synthesized via a three-step approach. The TS-P-Si anode delivered a capacity of 858.94 mA h g(-1) and a capacity retention of 87.8% (753.99 mA h g(-1)) after being subjected to 400 cycles at a current density of 400 mA g(-1). The good cycling performance was due to the unique structure of the inner silicon oxide layer, middle silver nano-particle layer and outer carbon layer, leading to a good conductivity and a decreased volume change of this silicon-based anode.

Abstract:Silicon is regarded as the next-generation alternative anode material of lithium–ion battery due to the highest theoretical specific capacity of 4200 mAh g−1. Nevertheless, the drastic volume expansion/shrink (~ 300%) during the lithiation/delithiation process and the poor electrical conductivity obstruct its commercial application. Herein, we report a novel design of litchi-structural Si@C nanoparticles (L-S Si@C) as long cycle life anode material for lithium–ion battery. The L-S Si@C with nanosized (~ 50 nm) SiC dispersed in the inner surface and ~ 6 wt% carbon layer covering the outer surface delivers a specific capacity of 1145 mAh g−1 in the initial cycle and maintains a specific capacity of 570 mAh g−1 after 300th cycling times, which can be attributed to the specially structurally stable L-S Si@C nanoparticles.

Abstract:Constructing a robust structure is crucial for addressing the inherent flaws of SiO-based anode materials, such as significant volume expansion and high ion and electron resistance. Therefore, in this article, we synthesized a SiO-based composite denoted as SiO–SiO2@C via a facile liquid-phase method. This composite possessed a sturdy three-dimensional structure and dual functionality. The superstructure was formed by the carbon-coated amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles surrounding the SiO particles, which endowed the structural stability of SiO–SiO2@C. It is worth noting that the SiO–SiO2@C composite manifested a high ICE of 75.7% and an impressive reversible capacity of 1061.0 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 100 cycles, with a 97% capacity retention compared to the second discharge. Furthermore, this electrode showed exceptional cycle performance of 430.5 mA h g–1 after 700 cycles at 2 A g–1 and rate performance with an average reversible capacity of 703.4 mA h g–1 at 3 A g–1. Overall, the prepared SiO–SiO2@C electrode material displayed a huge opportunity for lithium-ion battery anodes.

Abstract:Rigid oxygen-deficient TiO2-x coated mesoporous hollow Si nanospheres with a mechanically and electrically robust structure have been constructed through a facile method for high-performance Li-ion battery anodes. The mesoporous hollow structure provides enough inner void space for the expansion of Si. The oxygen-deficient TiO2-x coating has functions in three aspects: (1) avoiding direct contact between Si and the electrolyte; (2) suppressing the outward expansion of the mesoporous hollow Si nanospheres; (3) improving the conductivity of the composite. The combined effect leads to high interfacial stability and structural integrity of both the material nanoparticles and the whole electrode. By virtue of the rational design, the composite yields a high reversible specific capacity of 1750.4 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, an excellent cycling stability of 1303.1 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 with 84.5% capacity retention after 500 cycles, and a high rate capability of 907.6 mA h g-1 even at 4 A g-1.

Abstract:Silicon oxides (SiOx) have been widely recognized as a highly potential material for anodes in advanced lithium-ion batteries due to their remarkable reversible capacity. Nonetheless, the commercial utilization of SiOx anodes is still impeded by their low inherent electrical conductivity and substantial volumetric fluctuations. Herein, a layer-by-layer structure, composited of two-dimensional (2D) SiOx and nitrogen-doped carbon, is fabricated as a robust lithium-ion battery anode via the thermal pyrolysis of in situ formed siloxene/polyaniline. Nitrogen-doped carbon is distributed across both the interlayer and surface of 2D SiOx, yielding the composite anode with a stable electrode interface, superior structural integrity, and enhanced electrical conductivity. Therefore, the optimized 2D SiOx/nitrogen-doped carbon anode presents high reversible capacity (957.8 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g), ideal rate capability, and excellent cycling performance (696.4 mAh/g after 300 cycles at 1.0 A/g and 217.5 mAh/g over 1000 cycles at 5.0 A/g). This work provides a novel and simple approach to making 2D SiOx anodes hybridize with carbonaceous materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Silicon suboxides (SiO x ) materials are highly desirable as anode for high energy Li‐ion batteries due to their much higher specific capacity than conventional graphite anode. However, the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and inadequate capacity retention of SiO x anode arising from its immense volume variation during repeated lithiation/delithiation process greatly hinder its practical applications. To address these drawbacks of SiO x , by a simple calcination method, a robust and fast‐ion conducting interphase enriched of LiF, Li 2 C 2 O 4 , LiBO 2 , and Li 2 B 4 O 7 is rationally pre‐constructed With the assistance of this pre‐constructed artificial protective layer, the formed solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer possesses high Young's modulus and fast Li + conducting, and thus can accommodate the plastic deformation of SiO x anode, alleviate the parasitic reactions, and maintain the electrode integrity upon cycling. Thus, the modified SiO x (M‐SiO x ) anode exhibits higher ICE, better capacity retention and superior rate capability. More encouragingly, full cells pairing the M‐SiO x anode with LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 cathode show a high capacity retention of 80.6% for 200 cycles. This paper reveals the importance of pre‐constructing an artificial SEI layer and regulating interfacial chemistry in improving the performance of SiO x ‐based anodes, which is a milestone work for boosting the large scale application of SiO x ‐based anodes.

Abstract:SiOx@C anodes have been regarded as one of the most attractive candidates for next-generation high-capacity lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the uneven thickness and lack of continuity in the carbon coating have led to a decrease in capacity, lifespan, and coulombic efficiency. Thus, there is a pressing need to address the atomiclevel construction of the Si/C interface. In this study, we present a simple interfacial engineering approach to achieve an in-situ compact carbon layer on porous SiOx@C (pSiOx@C) anodes through low-temperature zinc thermal reduction. Following prelithiation, the pSiOx@C anode demonstrates excellent performance, including a high initial Coulombic efficiency (93.4%), a reversible capacity exceeding 900 mAh/g, long-term cycling stability (1300 charge/discharge cycles at 0.3 A/g) and remarkable rate capability. Furthermore, when coupled with the LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode, the pSiOx@C//LCO full cell exhibits superior Li-ion storage performance, achieving a high reversible capacity of 147 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g. This work provides valuable insights into the design of SiOxbased anode materials for high-energy-density LIBs.

Abstract:Fabrication of oxide layer over Si-based anode materials is recognized as a promising strategy to enhance the cycling performance of Si-based anodes through alleviating the severe volume variation during the lithiation/delithiation processes. In this work, an extremely simple and green plasma oxidation strategy is exploited to fabricate SiOx layer on the surface of Si nanoparticles. The obtained Si@SiOx materials deliver significant enhanced cycling stability (1201 mAh g−1 at 200th cycle) and promoted initial coulombic efficiency (89.96%) for application in lithium ions batteries (LIBs). The fabricated SiOx layer, which can not only serve as mechanical protect coating to buffer the huge volume change of Si, but also improve the electrolyte wettability of anode to facilitate the contact between electrolyte and electrode, thus promoting the transmission of lithium ions in the electrode. The presented work provides a simple and energy-efficiency and absolute green method to modify the surface of nanoparticles has been inspired preliminarily, and the prepared Si@SiOx materials exhibit promising electrochemical performances could be applied in the energy storage field.
Dual‐Carbon Phase‐Encapsulated Prelithiated SiOx Microrod Anode for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:An in situ pre‐lithiation strategy is achieved by a simple thermal treatment of the lithium salt of the silsesquioxane trisilanolate, which also results in the formation of dual carbon encapsulation of SiOC nanodomains. In practical application, the materials prepared have good electrochemical properties and cycling stability. Among silicon‐based anode family for Li‐ion battery technology, SiOx, a nonstoichiometric silicon suboxide holds the potential for significant near‐term commercial impact. In this context, this study mainly focuses on demonstrating an innovative SiOx@C anode design that adopts a pre‐lithiation strategy based on in situ pyrolysis of Li‐salt of silsesquioxane trisilanolate without the need for lithium metal or active lithium compounds and creates dual carbon encapsulation of SiOC nanodomains by simply one‐step thermal treatment. This ingenious design ensures the pre‐lithiation process and pre‐lithiation material with high‐environmental stability. Moreover, phenyl‐rich organosiloxane clusters and polyacrylonitrile polymers are expected to serve as internal and external carbon source, respectively. The formation of an interpenetrating and continuous carbon matrix network would not only synergistically offer an improved electrochemical accessibility of active sites but also alleviate the volume expansion effect during cycling. As a result, this new type of anode delivered a high reversible capacity, remarkable cycle stability as well as excellent high‐rate capability. In particular, the L2‐SiOx@C material has a high initial coulomb efficienc of 80.4% and, after 500 cycles, a capacity retention as high as 97.5% at 0.5 A g−1 with a reversible specific capacity of 654.5 mA h g−1.

In Situ Artificial Hybrid SEI Layer Enabled High‐Performance Prelithiated SiO x Anode for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Considered the promising anode material for next‐generation high‐energy lithium‐ion batteries, SiOx has been slow to commercialize due to its low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, which leads to reduced full‐cell energy density, short cycling lives, and poor rate performance. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to in situ construct an artificial hybrid SEI layer consisting of LiF and Li3Sb on a prelithiated SiOx anode via spontaneous chemical reaction with SbF3. In addition to the increasing ICE (94.5%), the preformed artificial SEI layer with long‐term cycle stability and enhanced Li+ transport capability enables a remarkable improvement in capacity retention and rate capability for modified SiOx. Furthermore, the full cell using Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2 and a pre‐treated anode exhibits high ICE (86.0%) and capacity retention (86.6%) after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. This study provides a fresh insight into how to obtain stable interface on a prelithiated SiOx anode for high energy and long lifespan lithium‐ion batteries. The in situ construction of artificial hybrid solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layers mainly composed of Li3Sb and LiF by using an effective immersion reaction between the prelithiated SiOx anode and SbF3/DME solution is proposed. The optimized artificial hybrid SEI layer not only suppresses the volume change of SiOx anode, but also enhances the Li+ transport kinetics, which enables a high‐initial coulombic efficiency and stable cycling performance of NCM811|| SiOx full cell.

Abstract:Silicon oxide (SiOx) emerges as one of the most promising anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the severe capacity fading arising from the structural degradation and low electronic conductivity still hinders its practical application. Herein, a novel SiOx anode material is constructed by embedding the SiOx microparticles into the 3D wrinkled multilayer graphene sheets with the heteroatoms of N, S co-doping. The proposed stable 3D conductive architecture can effectively facilitate the electronic and ionic transportation as well as buffer the volume changes of SiOx to maintain the structural integrity during cycling. Moreover, the first principles calculations confirm the synergistic effect of N, S co-doping, which introduces more heteroatomic defects, lowers the band gap and leads to more negative Li adsorption energies to further promote the electron transfer and improve the Li storage capability. Consequently, the fabricated anode material exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1150 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles. When paired with the commercial LiCoO2 cathode, the fabricated full LIB delivers the excellent long-life cycling stability, showing a high reversible capacity of 151 mA h g(-1) and a superior energy density up to 501 W h kg(-1) after 330 cycles, among the best of the recently reported work. Monodisperse and Homogeneous SiOx/C Microspheres: A Promising High-Capacity and Durable Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Monodisperse SiOx/C microspheres with tunable size (300–1000nm) and well-controlled carbon content (~ 20–60wt%) have been fabricated through a facile sol-gel method. The judicious selection of silicon and carbon precursors (vinyltriethoxysilane and resorcinol/formaldehyde) enables the formation of an homogeneous SiOx/C (x = 1.63) composite, in which the SiOx mainly exists as ultrafine nano-domains (<2nm). Benefiting from the unique structural features, the resultant SiOx/C microspheres demonstrate high capacity and outstanding cyclability. Specifically, a reversible capacity of 999mAhg−1 can be achieved at 100mAg−1, retaining 853mAhg−1 after 150 cycles. At 500mAg−1, the SiOx/C delivers a specific capacity of 689mAhg−1 and maintains 91.0% of the capacity after 400 cycles. SiOx/C//LiFePO4 full cells are also assembled, leading to an energy density of ~ 372Whkg−1 based on the total mass of active materials. This work sheds light on the rational design of high-performance SiOx based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
A Hybrid Structure to Improve Electrochemical Performance of SiO Anode Materials in Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:The wide utilization of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) prompts extensive research on the anode materials with large capacity and excellent stability. Despite the attractive electrochemical properties of pure Si anodes outperforming other Si-based materials, its unsafety caused by huge volumetric expansion is commonly admitted. Silicon monoxide (SiO) anode is advantageous in mild volume fluctuation, and would be a proper alternative if the low initial columbic efficiency and conductivity can be ameliorated. Herein, a hybrid structure composed of active material SiO particles and carbon nanofibers (SiO/CNFs) is proposed as a solution. CNFs, through electrospun processes, serve as a conductive skeleton for SiO nanoparticles and enable SiO nanoparticles to be uniformly embedded in. As a result, the SiO/CNF electrochemical performance reaches a peak at 20% the mass ratio of SiO, where the retention rate reaches 73.9% after 400 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1, and the discharge capacity after stabilization and 100 cycles are 1.47 and 1.84 times higher than that of pure SiO, respectively. A fast lithium-ion transport rate during cycling is also demonstrated as the corresponding diffusion coefficient of the SiO/CNF reaches ~8 × 10-15 cm2 s-1. This SiO/CNF hybrid structure provides a flexible and cost-effective solution for LIBs and sheds light on alternative anode choices for industrial battery assembly.
A Low‐Cost and Scalable Carbon Coated SiO‐Based Anode Material for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon monoxide (SiO) is considered as one of the most promising alternative anode materials thanks to its high theoretical capacity, satisfying operating voltage and low cost. However, huge volume change, poor electrical conductivity, and poor cycle performance of SiO dramatically hindered its commercial application. In this work, we report an affordable and simple way for manufacturing carbon‐coated SiO−C composites with good electrochemical performance on kilogram scales. Industrial grade SiO was modified by carbon coating using cheap and environment friendly polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as carbon source. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectra results show that there is an amorphous carbon coating layer with a thickness of about 40 nm on the surface of SiO. The synthesized SiO−C‐650 composite shows great electrochemical performance with a high capacity of 1491 mAh.g−1 at 0.1 C rate and outstanding capacity retention of 67.2 % after 100 cycles. The material also displays an excellent performance with a capacity of 1100 mAh.g−1 at 0.5 C rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results also prove that the carbon coating layer can effectively improve the conductivity of the composite and thus enhance the cycling stability of SiO electrode.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is a promising anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its unprecedented theoretical capacity of 4200 mA h g(-1) and earth-abundant supply (26.2 wt%). Nevertheless, the huge volume expansion and unstable solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) of Si in multiple cycles make it very hard to simultaneously achieve high-energy and long-term cycle life for applications in large-scale renewable energy storage. Herein, we demonstrate a new class of Si/SiOx@void@nitrogen-doped carbon double-shelled hollow superstructure (Si/SiOx-DSHS) electrodes that are capable of accommodating huge volume changes without pulverization during cycling. Benefiting from the unique double-shelled hollow superstructure, Si/SiOx-DSHSs can facilitate the formation of a highly stable SEI layer and provide superior kinetics toward Li+-ion storage. The diffusion-controlled process and the capacitance-type reaction can work together to endow Si/SiOx-DSHSs with remarkable electrochemical characteristics, especially at high current density. These important characteristics make Si/SiOx-DSHSs deliver a large reversible capacity (1290 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C), high first-cycle coulombic efficiency (71.7%), superior rate capability (360 mA h g(-1) at 10C), and excellent cycling behavior up to 1000 cycles with a small capacity decay of 10.2%. The Si/SiOx-DSHSs are among the best Si-based anode materials for LIBs reported to date.
