Abstract:Rhodium(III)-catalyzed N-directed ortho C-H activation and subsequent roll-over C-H activation represents an important strategy to synthesize fused polycyclic compounds. Herein, the novel methodology broadens the scope of the coupling partner to alkenes, which working smoothly with 7-azaindoles has been proven to be an efficient and atom-economical strategy to access complex p-conjugated 7-azaindole derivatives.

Abstract:An efficient approach for the preparation of tetracyclic indeno[1,2-b]indoles via Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H cascade annulation between arylhydrazines and diazo indan-1,3-diones has been established. In addition, a series of indeno[1,2-b]indoles were obtained in up to 96% yield with a wide range of substrates and high functional group tolerance. Finally, the diverse transformations of the desired products demonstrate the synthetic utility and utilization of this protocol.

Abstract:A novel Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/[5 + 2] cascade annulation of aroyl hydrazides with iodonium ylides is accomplished, in which diverse seven-membered dibenzodiazepinediones were afforded in moderate to excellent yields. This annulation reaction features an ideal functional group tolerance and a wide substrate scope. Large-scale and derivatization reactions were conducted to demonstrate the potential utility of this transformation.

Abstract:A novel Rh(III)-catalyzed relay cross-coupling/cyclization cascade between arylketoimines and diazoesters is described. This transformation provides a concise access to unique pi-conjugated 1-azaphenalenes (1-APLEs) via a double aryl Csp(2)-H bond carbenoid functionalization process. As illustrative examples, the 1-APLE-based pi-conjugated molecules which possess low-lying HOMO levels could be converted to promising organic optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:By using gem-difluorocyclopropenyl acetates as versatile coupling partners, we realized Rh(iii)-catalyzed cascade C-H functionalization/[3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine imines, which delivered various gem-difluorinated pentacyclic indenopyrazolopyrazolone derivatives under mild reaction conditions with specific regio-/diastereo-selectivity and good functional group tolerance. A one-pot three-component reaction and preliminary enantioselective synthesis are also illustrated to further strengthen the potential use of the developed transformation.

Abstract:The first rhodium(II)-catalyzed aza-[4+3] cycloadditions of 1-sulfonyl 1,2,3-triazoles with 1,3-dienes have been developed, and enable the efficient synthesis of highly functionalized 2,5-dihydroazepines from readily available precursors. In some cases, the reaction pathway could divert to formal aza-[3+2] cycloadditions, thus leading to 2,3-dihydropyrroles. In this context, the titled reaction represents a capable tool for the divergent synthesis of two types of synthetically valuable aza-heterocycles from common rhodium( II) iminocarbene intermediates.

Abstract:A facile synthetic method for 4-aryl-4,5-dihydropyrrole-3-carboxylates is developed, with a rhodium-catalyzed ring expansion strategy from readily available 2-(azetidin-3-ylidene) acetates and aryl boronic acids. Mechanistic investigations suggest a novel domino "conjugate addition/N-directed α-C(sp3)-H activation" process. The asymmetric catalytic synthesis of the 4-aryl-4,5-dihydropyrrole-3-carboxylate is realized by using QuinoxP* (91-97% ee). The synthetic utility of this protocol is demonstrated by the synthesis of 3,4-disubstituted or 2,3,4-trisubstituted pyrrolidines with excellent diastereoselectivities.

Abstract:A Rh(III)-catalyzed tandem C-H alkylation/intramolecular decarboxylative cyclization of azoxy compounds with diazoesters for the synthesis of 3-acyl-2H-indazoles is disclosed. The azoxy instead of the azo group enables a distinct approach for cyclative capture, leading to a [4 + 1]-annulation rather than a classic [4 + 2] manner. The azoxy oxygen atom is traceless after annulation, and further removal from the product is not required. This reaction features a complete regioselectivity for unsymmetrical azoxybenzenes and a compatibility of monoaryldiazene oxides.

Abstract:A Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of α-keto oximes and a cyclization cascade with diazo compounds were developed to construct the highly fused indano[1,2-<i>b</i>]azirine frameworks in good yields with a broad range of substrates under mild reaction conditions. More intriguingly, a [4+1+1] sequential annulation cascade is demonstrated for the first time in this reaction and opened a new reaction mode for α-keto oximes. These fused indano[1,2-<i>b</i>]azirine derivatives could also be further transformed into intriguing privileged drug scaffolds.
