Abstract:Transition‐metal‐free access to carbazoles was achieved through base‐mediated intramolecular C–C bond formation. Reactions of N‐substituted o‐halodiarylamines with potassium tert‐butoxide in the presence of ethylene glycol or 1,10‐phenanthroline provided carbazoles in moderate to excellent yields. This transformation may proceed through a radical pathway according to a control experiment with a radical scavenger.

Abstract:p-Methoxybenzeneazo-substituted o-carboranes have been synthesized and their reactivity with half-sandwich iridium and rhodium complexes has been investigated in detail. A variety of solventand base-dependent, highly site-selective B@H and C@C s-bond activations at the C/B cage have been observed. While the use of CH3OH leads to the formation of metallacarboranes, o-carborane clusters undergo cyclometallation reactions involving B(6)@H, B(4)@H or a rare B(7)@H activation in CH2Cl2. The synthesis of a unique pseudo-closo-iridacarborane through a very unconventional metal-mediated Ccage@Ccage activation is described in this contribution.

Abstract:Iridium(iii)-induced selective B(2,3)-H and C-H bond activations at mono- and bi-p-methoxybenzeneazo-substituted m-carboranes have been investigated. A powerful methodology is introduced for the preparation of unique polynuclear complexes featuring m-carboranyl ligands in a single step. The experimental results highlight that the base employed in the reaction plays a key role in the formation and the structures of the complexes.

Abstract:The regioselective derivatization of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion via catalytic B-H bond activation is reported. Amide directing groups in combination with rhodium and iridium catalysts allowed for the direct functionalization of cage boron vertices. Products comprising B-C, B-N and B-Cl bonds were synthesized. As a key intermediate of the B-H activation step, an iridium complex with a direct B-Ir interaction was isolated and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:A series of cage penta-arylated carboranes have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed intermolecular coupling of the C-carboxylic acid of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion [CB11H12](-) with iodoarenes by direct cage B-H bond functionalization. These transformations set a record in terms of one-pot directing group-mediated activation of inert bonds in a single molecule. The methodology is characterized by high yields, good functional group tolerance, and complete cage regioselectivity. The directing group COOH can be easily removed during or after the intermolecular coupling reaction. The mechanistic pathways were probed using density functional theory calculations. A Pd(II)-Pd(IV)-Pd(II) catalytic cycle is proposed, in which initial coupling is followed by preferred B-H activation of the adjacent boron vertex, and continuation of this selectivity results in a continuous walking process of the palladium center. The methodology opens a new avenue toward building blocks with 5-fold symmetry.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed coupling-cyclization reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides has been developed. In this reaction, the highly reactive alkenylketenimine intermediates generated by coupling reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides undergo intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition and provide a novel, highly efficient method for the one-step synthesis of carbazoles by formation of three new bonds and two rings from readily available acyclic starting materials.

Abstract:An iridium-catalyzed alkenylation/annulation sequence between monocarba-closo-dodecaborate carboxylic acids and diarylacetylenes is reported. Regioselective activation of the B2 position, followed by B-C bond formation and ring closure, affords 3D bora-analogues of isocoumarins. The reaction tolerates a variety of functional groups on the aromatic rings and can be extended to B12-substituted derivatives. Furthermore, subsequent alkenylation of the B4 vertex has been achieved in high yields.

Abstract:The synthesis of monocarborane sulfonamides is reported. The methodology relies on coupling of the anionic {CB 11 } boron cluster to sulfonyl azides. Under rhodium catalysis and with the assistance of a pyridine or pyrimidine directing group at the C1 position, the cluster undergoes B−H activation. Conditions have been identified that lead to B2‐selective mono‐sulfonamidation with concomitant loss of N 2 . The protocol requires no additional ligand, oxidant or base and enables B−N bond formation with various monocarborane and sulfonyl azide inputs. The new products possess the structure [1‐(heteroaryl)‐2‐(NHSO 2 Ar)−CB 11 H 10 ] − and have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. In addition, three solid state structures confirm the particular B2 substitution pattern. Furthermore, the stoichiometric reaction of the pyridinyl monocarborane precursor with Rh(III) affords a cyclometalated complex with a direct B−Rh bond that has also been characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

Abstract:Base-promoted decarboxylative azo couplings of carboranyl carboxylic acids with diazo salts have been developed to provide trans-azocarboranes in high yields (up to 94%). This approach is simple, efficient, and compatible with various functional groups. Mechanistically, the coupling has been proven to proceed in a nonradical pathway, which is distinct from those classical decarboxylative couplings.

Abstract:Diazo compounds and organic azides are widely used as reagents for accessing valuable molecules in multiple areas of fundamental and applied chemistry. Their capacity to undergo versatile chemical transformations arises from the reactive nature of an incipient dinitrogen molecule at the terminal position. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)–stabilized diazoborane—a boron-centered analog of organic azides and diazoalkanes. The diazoborane displays a strong tendency to release dinitrogen, thus serving as a borylene source, in analogy to organic azides and diazoalkanes serving as nitrene and carbene sources, respectively. Also reminiscent of diazoalkane and organic azide reactivity, the diazoborane serves as a 1,3-dipole that undergoes uncatalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition with an unactivated terminal alkyne, affording a five-membered heterocycle after a two-step rearrangement.

Abstract:A general synthesis of 4-hydroxylcarbazoles by domino vinylogous conjugate addition/cyclization/elimination/aromatization of easily prepared 3-nitroindoles with alkylidene azlactones under mild and transition-metal-free conditions has been developed. This method was also applicable to other nitrosubstituted benzofused heterocycles such as 3-nitrobenzothiophene, 2-nitrobenzothiophene, and 2-nitrobenzofuran. The valuable tetracyclic carbazole derivatives, such as 6H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazole and 3,6-dihydro-2H-oxazolo[4,5-c]carbazol-2-one, were readily prepared from the product, demonstrating synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract:A highly efficient Ir-catalyzed regioselective cage B(4)-H acylmethylation of o-carboranyl acids using sulfoxonium ylides as alkylating regents has been developed, leading to the preparation of a large class of B(4)-acylmethylated o-carboranes in good to excellent yields with a broad substrate scope under redox neutral conditions. The -COOH moiety serves as the traceless directing group and controls the regioselectivity and monoselectivity.

Abstract:The convenient cross-coupling of sp2 or sp3 carbons with a specific boron vertex on carborane cage represents significant synthetic values and insurmountable challenges. In this work, we report an Rh-catalyzed reaction between o-carborane and N-acyl-glutarimides to construct various Bcage -C bonds. Under the optimized condition, the removable imine directing group (DG) leads to B(3)- or B(3,6)-C couplings, while the pyridyl DG leads to B(3,5)-Ar coupling. In particular, an unexpected rearrangement of amide reagent is observed in pyridyl directed B(4)-C(sp3 ) formation. This scalable protocol has many advantages, including easy access, the use of cheap and widely available coupling agents, no requirement of an external ligand, base or oxidant, high efficiency, and a broad substrate scope. Leveraging the RhI dimer and twisted amides, this method enables straightforward access to diversely substituted and therapeutically important carborane derivatives at boron site, and provides a highly valuable vista for carborane-based drug screening.

Abstract:Icosahedral o /m /p-carborane (C2B10H12) and nido-7,8-carborane (C2B9H12-) are boron clusters with three-dimensional aromaticity, which has been well applied in material and pharmaceutical science. Although the diversity of highly functionalized carborane derivatives is continually desired, only a few have been afforded in the past few decades. Connecting specified vertices of carboranes with an organic fragment, termed as carboranylation, has been well explored under the aegis of novel synthetic strategies including transition-metal catalysis, metal-free catalysis, electrocatalysis, visible-light-induced photocatalysis, mechanochemical ball-milling reaction, and asymmetric catalysis. This chapter details and contextualizes the advancements in molecule construction brought forth by aforementioned means. The carboranylation approaches summarized in this chapter are categorized as (1) functionalization via B-H bond activation; (2) transformation of pre-functionalized carborane; (3) functionalization on carbon vertex.
