Abstract:The enhancement of charge separation and utilization efficiency in both the bulk phase and interface of semiconductor photocatalysts, as well as the expansion of light absorption range, are crucial research topics in the field of photocatalysis. To address this issue, twinned Cd0.5Zn0.5S (T-CZS) homojunctions consisting of wurtzite Cd0.5Zn0.5S (WZ-CZS) and zinc blende Cd0.5Zn0.5S (ZB-CZS) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method to facilitate the bulk-phase charge separation. Meanwhile, Cu2-xSe with localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) generated by Cu vacancies was also obtained through a hydrothermal process. Due to their opposite electronegativity, a solvent evaporation strategy was employed to combine Cu2-xSe and T-CZS by intermolecular electrostatic. After optimization, the photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution rate of 5 wt% Cu2-xSe/T-CZS reached an impressive value of 60 mmol∙h-1∙g-1, which was 4.6 and 66.6 times higher than that of pure Cu2-xSe and T-CZS, respectively. Furthermore, this composites demonstrated a remarkable rate of 0.46 mmol∙h-1∙g-1 under near-infrared (NIR) wavelength (>800 nm). The enhanced performance observed in Cu2-xSe/T-CZS can be attributed to its unique and efficient double S-scheme charge transfer mechanism which effectively suppresses rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs both within the bulk phase and at the surface interfaces; this conclusion is supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations as well as electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, incorporation of Cu2-xSe enables effective utilization ultraviolet visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) light by the composites while facilitating injection "hot electrons" into T-CZS for promoting photocatalytic reactions. This study provides a potential strategy for achieving efficient solar energy conversion through synergistic integration of non-stoichiometric plasmonic materials with photocatalysts with twinned-twinned structures.
Promising CoSe2-CNT composite catalyst for efficient photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:CoSe2 is a typical transition metal chalcogenide and an hydrogen evolution reaction hydrogen evolution catalyst due to its efficient and inexpensive characteristics. In this work, CoSe2/CNT composite was synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Specifically, a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) can be achieved under an overpotential of 163 mV, and the Tafel slope is 69.4 mV dec(-1). The reasons for these excellent performances are: 1) the abundant catalytic active sites of CoSe2; 2) the high conductivity of CNTs; and 3) the synergistic effect between CoSe2 and CNTs; iv the solar irradiation excites electrons to join the reaction. This work proposes a new way to reasonably design the high-efficiency and low-cost transition metal chalcogenide hydrogen evolution catalysts.

Abstract:Silicon micropyramids with n(+)pp(+) junctions are demonstrated to be efficient absorbers for integrated solar-driven hydrogen production systems enabling significant improvements in both photocurrent and onset potential. When conformally coated with MoSxCly, a catalyst that has excellent catalytic activity and high optical transparency, the highest photocurrent density for Si-based photocathodes with earth-abundant catalysts is achieved.

Abstract:In this work, ZnSe/ZnCo 2 S 4 (ZCS) composites were synthesized by simple hydrothermal method and Z-scheme heterojunctions were formed. Under the simulated sunlight environment, The results show that the hydrogen production efficiency of 70 wt% ZnSe/ZCS composites was as high as 3402.4 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 4.37 and 94.44 times that of ZnSe and ZCS monomers, respectively, and the apparent quantum efficiency (AQY) reaches 10.5%. Among them, the Z-scheme heterojunction improves the redox ability of the material, which is more conducive to charge separation, and ZCS also promotes absorption of visible light of ZnSe/ZCS. In addition, the Z-scheme heterojunction structure and material stability were verified by XPS, ESR.This work provides a new way to improve ZnSe in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Designing the heterojunction is an efficient method to boost the H 2 evolution activity of photocatalysts. Here, to enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnSe, ZnSe particles were attached to the flower-like Co 3 O 4 surface to form S-scheme heterojunctions. Under visible light exposure, the H 2 production rate of the 3 wt%Co 3 O 4 /ZnSe (COZS) composite was 4197.36 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was approximately 5.5 and 18.2 times that of 1 %Pt-ZnSe (756.76 μmol g −1 h −1 ) and ZnSe (230.52 μmol g −1 h −1 ). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical and photoluminescence results revealed that the recombination of carriers was effectively inhibited, which may be attributed to Co 3+ /Co 2+ autooxidation-reduction pairs and S-scheme heterojunction. According to the specific surface area results, Co 3 O 4 was beneficial in increasing the specific surface area of composite photocatalyst and exposing more active sites, thereby improving photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the optical test results displayed that the light absorbing range of COZS was broadened to the entire visible spectrum, which may promote the increase of photogenerated carriers. According to the band structure of COZS and the possible path of electron transfer, the photocatalytic mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:In order to realize the dream of the practical application of hydrogen energy from solar energy and water, it is necessary to use efficient and earth-abundant cocatalysts for photocatalytic H-2 evolution. Compared with a one-component cocatalyst, the multicomponent cocatalysts with a synergistic effect can effectively accelerate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in photocatalysis. Hence, a novel bicomponent Co3S4/Co@C cocatalyst on a CdS semiconductor photocatalyst is successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The Co3S4/Co-CdS photocatalyst obtained exhibits a highly efficient photocatalytic H-2 evolution rate of 15.17 mmol h(-1) g(-1), which is 2.8 times higher than that of Pt-CdS. Furthermore, the quantum efficiency of Co3S4/Co-CdS reaches a maximum value of 16.80% at 475 nm. The significant improvement in the performance is because of the unique energy level structure of the Co3S4/Co-CdS photocatalyst, which has the maximum efficiency of charge separation and migration. This work not only presents a new protocol for constructing bicomponent cocatalysts on a semiconductor structure, but also proves that the bicomponent Co3S4/Co@C is a promising and low-cost cocatalyst.
Fabrication of Z-scheme Cd0.85Zn0.15S/Co9S8dual-functional Photocatalyst for Effective Hydrogen Evolution and Organic Pollutant Degradation.

Abstract:A Z-scheme Cd0.85Zn0.15S/Co9S8(CZS-CS) photocatalyst was reasonably fabricated by a simple solvothermal method for the effective visible-light-driven H2evolution and organic pollutants degradation. The precise construction of the CZS-CS composites provided an efficient heterogeneous contact interface and abundant reaction sites for the proposed photocatalytic reaction. The homogeneous Co9S8nanocrystals were uniformly wrapped on the surface of Cd0.85Zn0.15S nanorods, forming an intimate-contact interface, markedly contributed to the light collection and effectively inhibited the charge-carrier recombination. The optimized CZS-CS-15 composites exhibited a special H2production rate reaching 19.15 mmol·h-1·g-1, roughly 1915 and 4.5 times of pure Co9S8and Cd0.85Zn0.15S samples and 85% of tetracycline (TC) molecule within 15 min was degraded. Furthermore, trapping experiments confirmed that h+was the main active species for TC photodegradation. Moreover, the obtained photocatalysts manifested stability without apparent activity declines during the proposed reactions. Finally, the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was verified to illustrate the characteristics of efficient charge transfer and high redox ability. This study provided a rational and learnable strategy for designing dual-functional Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Composition-dependent Activity of ZnxCd1-xSe Solid Solution Coupled with Ni2P Nanosheets for Visible-Light-driven Photocatalytic H2 Generation

Abstract:Metal selenide semiconductors have been rarely used for photocatalytic water splitting because of their poor stability and severe photocorrosion properties. Hence, designing stable metal selenides with suitable bandgap energies has considerable practical significance in photocatalytic H-2 evolution. In this work, a novel series of ZnxCd1-xSe (x = 0 similar to 1) with tunable band structure were fabricated through a simple solvothermal method. Impressively, the ZnSe exhibited a maximum H-2 production rate of 1056 mmol g(-1)h(-1), which was higher than that of CdSe and ZnxCd1-xSe solid solutions. Such visible-light photoactivity for water reduction to H-2 was attained even after 6 cycling photocatalytic experiments. Moreover, the two-dimensional (2D) Ni2P nanosheets act as a high-efficiency cocatalyst integrated with ZnxCd1-xSe semiconductor to boost photocatalytic H-2 generation performance. The optimal 8% Ni2P/ZnSe composites displayed excellent cycling stability and superior photocatalytic H-2 evolution performance (4336 mmol g(-1)h(-1)), which was about 4.1 times that of pure ZnSe under visible light irradiation. Photoelectrochemical (PEC), photoluminescence (PL), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements reveal that the improved photoactivity Ni2P/ZnSe photocatalysts were ascribed to the effective separation and migration of photoinduced carriers. The present work paves a pathway to explore the fabrication of ZnxCd1-xSe solid solutions and the hybridization of 2D transition metal phosphides nanosheets toward photocatalytic applications. Abstract:In the process of photocatalysis, semiconductor materials generate photogenerated electrons and photogenerated holes when excited by sunlight, so as to participate in the process of photocatalytic decomposition of water to produce hydrogen. In this work, under the combined action of ultrasonic and electrostatic forces, two semiconductors are successfully coupled through electrostatic self-assembly to effectively avoid the serious phenomenon of sulfide photocorrosion. Through electrochemical and fluorescence characterization experiments, it is confirmed that ZnCo2O4/CdS can accelerate the generation and transmission rates of photogenerated carriers. ZnCo2O4/CdS greatly increased the activity of the catalyst under simulated sunlight irradiation. With good photocatalytic activity, the hydrogen yield reached 80.71 mmol g(-1) within 5 hours, far superior to those of Co3O4/CdS and ZnO/CdS. The relative values of the work functions of ZnCo2O4(311) and CdS(110) were calculated by DFT. Combined with the position of the conduction band, it was concluded that a new S-scheme induced by an internal electric field was formed at the ZCO/CS-25% contact interface, thus improving the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting taking the advantage of using solar energy directly is one of the most effective strategies for hydrogen evolution. The development of facile methods for synthesizing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts for hydrogen production still remains a great challenge. Herein, a metal organic framework (MOF)-templated strategy was designed for the synthesis of solid solutions of (Zn0.95Cu0.05)(1-x)CdxS that exhibit outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction activity. More importantly, efficient light capturing ability and photogenerated charges separation were accomplished via fine-tuning the composition of the photocatalysts by adjusting the concentrations of doping metals in the template MOFs. Under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), an optimized nanocatalyst, (Zn0.95Cu0.05)(0.6)Cd0.4S, exhibited a higher durability and satisfied photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 4150.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) of water splitting.
Metal-organic Framework-Derived Three-Dimensional CoSe2/Cd0.8Zn0.2S Schottky Junction for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:The well-designed interface plays a key role in enhancing the charge transfer kinetics. In this work, a threedimensional CoSe2/Cd0.8Zn0.2S Schottky junction was successfully prepared using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as precursor material by in-situ chemistry synthetic strategies to improve the charge transfer kinetics. The photocatalytic H2 generation rate of 3.2%-CoSe2/Cd0.8Zn0.2S is 80 times higher than pristine Cd0.8Zn0.2S. The systematic characterization (XPS, TRPL, EPR, etc.) and DFT results show the improvement of photocatalytic performance derives from the formation of Schottky junction between CoSe2 and Cd0.8Zn0.2S. The well-designed and tight interface can facilitate electrons transfer from Cd0.8Zn0.2S to CoSe2, and Schottky barrier can suppress the electrons flow back to Cd0.8Zn0.2S, resulting in the high separation of charge carriers. On the other hand, the noble metal-free CoSe2 with larger specific surface area function as the electron acceptors and active sites for reducing H+ to H2 efficiently, thus in favor of obtaining the enhanced H2 generation performance. Combining the three-dimensional structure with Schottky junction, this work provides an effective strategy to prepare photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production utilizing abundant solar energy to produce high-calorie, clean, and pollution-free hydrogen is an important approach to solving environmental and resource problems. In this work, a high-efficiency flower-like ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S photocatalyst was constructed through element doping and the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction. The synergistic effect of Cu doping and the built-in electric field in the heterojunction enhanced light absorption and utilization by the ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S microflowers, accelerated the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and effectively inhibited electron–hole recombination. Thus the photocatalytic hydrogen production ability of the ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S microflowers was increased significantly. The highly stable ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S microflowers could provide excellent catalysis of photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) is used to convert solar energy to hydrogen energy. Therefore, a low-cost, effective, and dependable photocatalyst could be a viable solution to environmental and energy crises. However, performing energy-conversion reactions by preparing photocatalysts with suitable photoabsorption and effective charge separation is challenging. Herein, a novel CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS) hollow microcube composite catalyst with a p-n heterojunction is constructed, in which ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown in situ on the surfaces of CoMn2O4 hollow microcubes. Surprisingly, 10% CoMn2O4-ZnIn2S4 (CMO-ZIS-10) exhibits a PHE rate of up to 11.04 mmol h−1 g−1, which is approximately 3.6 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. In addition, to maintain the excellent visible light absorption efficiency of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets, the close-contact heterogeneous interface of CMO-ZIS enables easy separation and transfer of the carriers. Furthermore, the hollow structure increases the absorption efficiency of sunlight and provides more active sites, thus increasing the reactivity of photocatalyst. In this paper, we report a workable approach for building heterojunction photocatalysts powered by water splitting.

Abstract:In this work, we design and fabricate a novel Zn0·5Cd0·5S/CoP composite with a 3D microflower structure by a facile hydrothermal method. Comprehensive photochemical measurements showed that the engineering of highly conductive CoP co-catalyst into Zn0·5Cd0·5S solid solution improves the visible light response capability by narrowing the forbidden band gap. At the same time, a morphology control by forming a 3D microflower structure could realize an intimate contact interface between Zn0·5Cd0·5S and CoP, which ensures that electrons from Zn0·5Cd0·5S excited by visible light (420 nm) can be effectively transferred to the highly conductive CoP for separation and migration. The systematic photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiments illustrate a remarkable hydrogen production rate up to 72.71 mmol h−1 g−1 for Zn0·5Cd0·5S/CoP with a CoP mass fraction of 20 wt%, which is 27 times higher than that of bare Zn0·5Cd0.5S. Based on the characterization analysis results, a possible mechanism of hydrogen production by Zn0·5Cd0·5S/CoP composite catalyst is proposed.

Abstract:Although photocatalytic water splitting has excellent potential for converting solar energy into chemical energy, the challenging charge separation process and sluggish surface catalytic reactions significantly limit progress in solar energy conversion using semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a feasible strategy involving the surface assembly of cobalt oxide species (CoOx) on a visible-light-responsive Cd0.9Zn0.1S (CZS) photocatalyst to fabricate a hierarchical CZS@CoOx het-erostructure. The unique hierarchical structure effectively accelerates the directional transfer of photogenerated charges, reducing charge recombination through the smooth interfacial hetero-junction between CZS and CoOx, as evidenced by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and various electrochemical characterizations. The surface cobalt species on the CZS material also act as effi-cient cocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production, with activity even higher than that of noble metals. The well-defined CZS@CoOx heterostructure not only enhances the interfacial separa-tion of photoinduced charges, but also improves surface catalytic reactions. This leads to superior photocatalytic performances, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 20％ at 420 nm for visi-ble-light-driven hydrogen generation, which is one of the highest quantum efficiencies measured among noble-metal-free photocatalysts. Our work presents a potential pathway for controlling complex charge separation and catalytic reaction processes in photocatalysis, guiding the practical development of artificial photocatalysts for successful transformation of solar to chemical energy.

Abstract:A hierarchical CoP@ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst was prepared via a MOF-templated strategy. Owing to the unique composition and morphology that can facilitate the separation of photoexcited carriers, enhance light absorption and provide high surface area, CoP@ZnIn2S4 exhibited a H2 evolution rate of 0.103 mmol h-1 and remained stable over 24 hours.

Abstract:A Z-scheme Cd0.85Zn0.15S/Co9S8 (CZS-CS) photocatalyst was reasonably fabricated by a simple solvothermal method for the effective visible-light-driven H2 evolution and organic pollutants degradation. The precise construction of the CZS-CS composites provided an efficient heterogeneous contact interface and abundant reaction sites for the proposed photocatalytic reaction. The homogeneous Co9S8 nanocrystals were uniformly wrapped on the surface of Cd0.85Zn0.15S nanorods, forming an intimate-contact interface, markedly contributed to the light collection and effectively inhibited the charge-carrier recombination. The optimized CZS-CS-15 composites exhibited a special H2 production rate reaching 19.15 mmol·h−1·g−1, roughly 1915 and 4.5 times of pure Co9S8 and Cd0.85Zn0.15S samples and 85% of tetracycline (TC) molecule within 15 min was degraded. Furthermore, trapping experiments confirmed that h+ was the main active species for TC photodegradation. Moreover, the obtained photocatalysts manifested stability without apparent activity declines during the proposed reactions. Finally, the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was verified to illustrate the characteristics of efficient charge transfer and high redox ability. This study provided a rational and learnable strategy for designing dual-functional Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Abstract:The stable composite photocatalyst integrated by ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS exhibits outstanding visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic H2 generation activity, due to that: i) the Z‐scheme charge transfer route facilitates charge separation, prolongs carrier lifetimes, and remains strong electron reduction capacity; ii) the unique cube‐in‐cube structure brings abundant active sites, improves light harvesting ability, shortens charge transfer distance. Rational design hybrid nanostructure photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and transfer, and good solar light harvesting ability have critical significance for achieving high solar‐to‐chemical conversion efficiency. Here a highly active and stable composite photocatalyst is reported by integrating ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS cube to form the cube‐in‐cube structure. Experimental results combined with density functional theory calculations confirm that the Z‐scheme ZnIn2S4/CdS heterojunction is formed, which highly boosts the charge separation and transfer under the local‐electric‐field at semiconductor/semiconductor interface, and thus prolongs their lifetimes. Moreover, such a structure affords the highly enhanced light‐harvesting property. The optimized ZnIn2S4/CdS nanohybrids exhibit superior H2 generation rate under visible‐light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) with excellent photochemical stability during 20 h continuous operation.
