Abstract:Utilizing threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) velocity imaging, dissociation of state-selected CH(3)Cl(+) ions was investigated in the excitation energy range of 11.0-18.5 eV. TPEPICO time-of-flight mass spectra and three-dimensional time-sliced velocity images of CH(3)(+) dissociated from CH(3)Cl(+)(A(2)A(1) and B(2)E) ions were recorded. CH(3)(+) was kept as the most dominant fragment ion in the present energy range, while the branching ratio of CH(2)Cl(+) fragment was very low. For dissociation of CH(3)Cl(+)(A(2)A(1)) ions, a series of homocentric rings was clearly observed in the CH(3)(+) image, which was assigned as the excitation of umbrella vibration of CH(3)(+) ions. Moreover, a dependence of anisotropic parameters on the vibrational states of CH(3)(+)(1(1)A') provided a direct experimental evidence of a shallow potential well along the C-Cl bond rupture. For CH(3)Cl(+)(B(2)E) ions, total kinetic energy released distribution for CH(3)(+) fragmentation showed a near Maxwell-Boltzmann profile, indicating that the Cl-loss pathway from the B(2)E state was statistical predissociation. With the aid of calculated Cl-loss potential energy curves of CH(3)Cl(+), CH(3)(+) formation from CH(3)Cl(+)(A(2)A(1)) ions was a rapid direct fragmentation, while CH(3)Cl(+)(B(2)E) ions statistically dissociated to CH(3)(+) + Cl via internal conversion to the high vibrational states of X(2)E.

Abstract:The kinetic processes of the photoionization and photodissociation ionization of CH3Cl have been investigated under the supersonic beam conditions using synchrotron radiation. The ionization energy of CH3Cl is 11.28 �� 0.01eV. Based on the measured appearance potential (AP) of the ionic fragments, the related formation enthalpies of the ionic species, the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of ionic and neutral species, and the dissociation energy (DE) of parent ion have been evaluated. The most possible channel of dissociation photoionization were analyzed.

Abstract:Photoionization and fragmentation of CHF2Cl were studied with photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) and photoionization efficiency spectroscopy (PIES) at NSRL. Ionization potential of CHF2Cl was obtained and major fragment ions CHF2+, CHFCl+, CHF+, and CF+ were observed with their appearance energies, respectively. Dissociation energies of some possible dissociation channels were deduced. The processes of photoionization and fragmentation of CHF2Cl are discussed based on the comparison between determined appearance energies and energies predicted by the Gaussian-2 calculations.

Abstract:The dissociative photoionization of CF3Cl was investigated using threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) imaging in the energy range of 12.30-18.50 eV. The coincident time-of-flight mass spectra and three-dimensional time-sliced images of the CF2Cl+ fragment were recorded at a few specific photon energies. Two fragmentation pathways were observed that led to the breakage of the C-Cl and C-F bonds, while the branching ratio elicited an energy-dependent relationship. The CF3+ fragment was dominant in the dissociation of the (XE)-E-2, A(2)A and B(2)A states, while CF2Cl+ became the predominant fragment and its branching ratio remained constant in the energy range associated with the (CE)-E-2 and (DE)-E-2 states. Based on the inflection point in the energy-dependent curve of the fragment branching ratios, the adiabatic ionization energy (IEa) of (CE)-E-2 is suggested to be 15.46 eV. Although the excess energy increased considerably from (CE)-E-2 to (DE)-E-2, the kinetic energy release distributions (KERDs) of CF2Cl+ were similar. Moreover, the anisotropy parameters for the F-loss channel were positive and larger than those for the Cl-loss channel. The calculated F-loss potential energy curves of CF3Cl+ suggested that for the (CE)-E-2 and (DE)-E-2 states, the C-F bond rupture occurred via the internal conversion to the A(2)A state followed by the dissociation attributed to the crossing of the barrier along the C-F coordinate. Based on the experimental and theoretical conclusions, the internal conversion is the rate-determining step in the dissociative photoionization of CF3Cl via the (CE)-E-2 and (DE)-E-2 ionic states, irrespective of whether the C-F and C-Cl bonds rupture.

Abstract:The dissociative photoionization of CF3Cl was investigated in the photon energy range of 12.30-18.50 eV. The low-lying electronic states of CF3Cl+ cations were prepared by the method of threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TPEPICO). The threshold photoelectron spectrum and the coincident time-of-flight mass spectra at the specific photon energies were recorded. Only a CF3+ fragment was observed at lower energy, while a CF2Cl+ fragment appeared for C2E and D2E states. As Cl-loss from the ground ionic state is statistical, the total kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) is represented as a Boltzmann profile, and a 0 K appearance energy of AP0 =12.79 ± 0.02 eV is derived from the statistical modelling of the breakdown diagram from 12.60 to 12.85 eV without taking into account the kinetic shift. For the A2A1 and B2A2 states of CF3Cl+ cations, the total KERDs are bimodal, where a parallel faster dissociation appears together with the statistical distribution. At higher energies like the C2E and D2E ionic states, a bimodal distribution similar to that of the A2A1 and B2A2 states is also observed for the KERD. With the aid of the calculated Cl-loss potential energy curves, the dissociative mechanisms of internal energy-selected CF3Cl+ cations are proposed.

Abstract:Dissociative photoionization of methyl bromide (CH3Br) in an excitation energy range of 10.45-16.90 eV has been investigated by using threshold photoelectron-photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) velocity imaging. The coincident time-of-flight mass spectra indicate that the ground state X(2)E of CH3Br(+) is stable, and both A(2)A1 and B(2)E ionic excited states are fully dissociative to produce the unique fragment ion of CH3 (+). From TPEPICO 3D time-sliced velocity images of CH3 (+) dissociated from specific state-selected CH3Br(+) ion, kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) and angular distribution of CH3 (+) fragment ion are directly obtained. Both spin-orbit states of Br((2)P) atom can be clearly observed in fast dissociation of CH3Br(+)(A(2)A1) ion along C-Br rupture, while a KERD of Maxwell-Boltzmann profile is obtained in dissociation of CH3Br(+)(B(2)E) ion. With the aid of the re-calculated potential energy curves of CH3Br(+) including spin-orbit coupling, dissociation mechanisms of CH3Br(+) ion in A(2)A1 and B(2)E states along C-Br rupture are revealed. For CH3Br(+)(A(2)A1) ion, the CH3 (+) + Br((2)P1/2) channel is occurred via an adiabatic dissociation by vibration, while the Br((2)P3/2) formation is through vibronic coupling to the high vibrational level of X(2)E state followed by rapid dissociation. C-Br bond breaking of CH3Br(+)(B(2)E) ion can occur via slow internal conversion to the excited vibrational level of the lower electronic states and then dissociation.

Abstract:The photoionization and dissociative photoionizations of carbon tetrachloride have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. In experiments, we have combined the techniques of synchrotron radiation, molecular beam and mass spectrometry to obtain the photoionization efficiency spectra for CCl3+, CCl2+, CCl+, C+ and Cl+. Thus we have measured the appearance energies of these ion fragments, which in turn lead to the various dissociation energies (D0) for CCln+ and CCln. Computationally, we have also obtained the D0 values by the ab initio Gaussian-2 method. The two sets of D0 values are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract:VUV dissociative photoionization of CHF2Cl in an energy region ∼12–22eV was investigated with photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) using synchrotron radiation (SR). The ionization energy of CHF2Cl and appearance energies for its fragment ions, CHF2+, CF+, CHF+, CHFCl+, CF2+, Cl+, CFCl+, CCl+, HCl+, CF2Cl+, H+ and CHCl+, were determined with photoionization efficiency spectroscopy (PIES). The dissociation energies of some possible dissociation channels to produce those fragment ions were also determined experimentally. The total energies of CHF2Cl and its main photofragments were calculated using Gaussian 98 program and Gaussian – 2 calculations. And then, the ionization energy of CHF2Cl, appearance potentials for its fragment ions, and the dissociation energies to produce them were predicted using high accuracy energy model. The mechanism of photoionization and photodissociation of CHF2Cl was discussed deeply based on comparison of our experimental results with those predicted theoretically. According to our research results, the experimental dissociation energies were in reasonable agreement with either the calculated dissociation energies (Ed) or the reaction barriers V(G2) of possible photodissociation channels of CHF2Cl.

Abstract:Following photoexcitation of Cl 2p electrons to various resonances, the dissociation dynamics of ionic and excited neutral fragments of gaseous CH2Cl2 was investigated by combined measurements of photon-induced ionic dissociation, x-ray absorption, and uv-visible dispersed fluorescence. The Cl 2p core-to-Rydberg excitations near the ionization threshold produce a notable enhancement of excited neutral fragments (C* and CH*), which is attributed to the contribution from a shake-modified resonant Auger decay and postcollision interaction. The excitation Cl 2p -> 10 a(1)* induces an enhanced yield of CH2+, possibly originating from fast dissociation via a strongly repulsive surface. The experimental results provide insight into the dissociation dynamics of ionic and excited neutral fragment production following core-level excitation.

Abstract:Anionic fragments, F− and Cl− including two isotope species 35Cl− and 37Cl−, are observed in the photoexcitations of CFCl3. The ion-pair anion efficiency spectra of 35Cl− and 37Cl− are recorded in the photon energy range of 7.75–22.00 eV. The threshold of ion-pair dissociation CFCl3→CFCl2++Cl− is experimentally determined to be 7.94±0.04 eV. With the references of the high-resolution photoabsorption spectra reported in the literatures, we make tentative assignments of the electron valence-to-Rydberg transitions. Furthermore, the multibody ion-pair fragmentation processes to Cl− are discussed by comparison between the calculated thermochemical thresholds and the experimental efficiency spectrum.

Abstract:The state-resolved photodissociation dynamics of CH3Br+ cations are studied using a combination of slice imaging and velocity mapping. Parent ions are prepared by (2 + 1) two-photon resonant three-photon ionization of CH3Br through the 5s Rydberg state in the energy region 29 069.8-29 976.0 cm(-1). Analysis of the photoelectron spectra reveals that CH3Br + ions are produced in the spin-orbit ground electronic state with a wide distribution of vibrational excitation. The photodissociation of CH3Br+ produces CH3+(X) + Br(P-2(1/2))/ Br(P-2(3/2)) whose product state distribution shows substantial excitation in the umbrella mode of the CH3+ photofragment, especially when concurrently producing the Br(P-2(1/2)) channel. The shapes of the photofragment angular distributions clearly show the different dissociation mechanisms in the Br(P-2(1/2)) and Br(P-2(3/2)) channels. The dissociation dynamics of the 5s Rydberg state of CH3Br are also presented and analyzed.

Abstract:van der Waals complexes Nam...(XR)n (R=CH3 and Ph; X=Cl and F) have been generated by crossing a beam of Na with a supersonic jet of halide molecules XR seeded with Ar. The complexes were identified and measured by photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Tunable visible radiation (530–680 nm) was used to measure the photodissociation spectrum (an ‘‘action spectrum’’) of these clusters. The peak cross section for photodissociation of Na2...(ClCH3)n (n=1 and 2) was found to be large (∼6 Å2) with its maximum at 635 nm for n=1 and at 615 nm for n=2. These peak wavelengths suggest that the primary route for photodissociation is excitation of the Nam followed by charge-transfer dissociation: Na2...(ClCH3)1,2 + hυ → [Na*2...(ClCH3)1,2]‡ → [Na+2...(ClCH3)1,2−]‡→products (the double dagger indicates a transition state). By contrast, the photodissociation of Na2+...(ClCH3) appeared to follow a direct mechanism involving the dissociation of the [Na–Na]+. For Na...FPh, two excited states of the complex (Π and Σ) were thought to be responsible for the two broad peaks in the action spectrum, each with vibrational structure.
Prompt and Delayed Coulomb Explosion of Doubly Ionized Hydrogen Chloride Molecules in Intense Femtosecond Laser Fields

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the dissociative double ionization of hydrogen chloride (HCl) molecules in intense femtosecond laser pulses. In addition to the prompt dissociation channels which occur on femtosecond timescales, long-lived hydrogen chloride dications which Coulomb-explode in flight towards the detector are clearly identified in the photoion-photoion coincidence spectrum. Different pathways leading to these prompt and delayed dissociation channels involving various bound and repulsive states of the HCl dication are discussed based on the observed kinetic energy release and momentum distributions. Our results indicate that the specific features of the HCl dication potential energy curves are responsible for the generation of the delayed fragmentation channels, which are expected to be general processes for the hydrogen halides.
Combined CASSCF and MR-CI Study on Photoinduced Dissociation and Isomerization of Acryloyl Chloride.

Abstract:The potential energy surfaces of isomerization and dissociation reactions for CH2CHCOCl in the S0, T1, T2, and S1 states have been mapped with DFT, CASSCF, MP2, and MR-CI calculations. Rate constants for adiabatic and nonadiabatic processes have been calculated with the RRKM rate theory, in conjugation with the vibronic interaction method. Mechanistic photochemistry of CH2CHCOCl at 230-310 nm has been characterized through the computed potential energy surfaces and rate constants. Upon photoexcitation of CH2CHCOCl at 310 nm, the S1-->T1 intersystem crossing is the dominant primary process, which is followed by the 1,3-Cl migration along the T1 pathway. Meanwhile, the S1-->S0 internal conversion occurs with considerable probability and the subsequent trans-cis isomerization proceeds in the ground state. The C-Cl bond cleavage is an exclusive primary channel upon photoexcitation of gaseous CH2CHCOCl at 230 nm. The direct C-Cl bond cleavage is partially blocked by effects of the matrix, and the internal conversion from S1 to S0 becomes an important process for the excited molecule to deactivate in the condensed phase. The present calculations not only provide a reasonable explanation of the experimental findings, but also give new insight into the mechanistic photochemistry of CH2CHCOCl.
On the Use of Photoelectron Spectroscopy to Probe the Dynamics of A Dissociative Intermediate State

Abstract:An in-depth experimental investigation into the use of photoelectron spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of a dissociative intermediate state is reported here. More than 70 velocity-mapped photoelectron images were acquired from either one-colour or two-colour two-photon ionization processes, covering the energy range from the ionization limit of CH3I to about 3600 cm(-1) above the IP. Numerous autoionizing states, both vibrationless and vibrationally excited, were observed and spectroscopically assigned. The finial ion state distributions, derived from the photoelectron kinetic energy analysis, are highly selective both in vibrational modes and in quantum numbers, as well as exhibit sensitive dependences on photon energy. These findings were interpreted as a manifestation of vibronic autclionization processes rather than a direct reflection of the dissociation dynamics of the resonant intermediate state in the (1 + 1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization of CH3I as suggested in previous studies.
Identifying the Multielectron Effect on Chemical Bond Rearrangement of CH3Cl Molecules in Strong Laser Fields

Abstract:Strong field double ionization that triggers the chemical bond rearrangement of CH3Cl is investigated by impulsive control of the alignment of molecules. The alignment and laser intensity dependent H-2(+) and H-3(+) yields in linearly polarized femtosecond laser have been measured, and the obtained data show that the maximum signal of H-2(+) appears at the laser polarization parallel to the C-Cl axis of molecules and H-3(+) species are more likely to eject at the laser polarization parallel to the C-Cl axis at low laser intensity while the H-3(+) signal peaks at laser polarization perpendicular to the C-Cl axis at high laser intensity. The measurements indicate that electrons from HOMO - 1 and HOMO - 2 orbitals have been ionized for the generation of bond rearrangement at different laser intensity. Our results demonstrate the importance of multielectron effects and also provide an effective control method in the process of chemical bond rearrangement of the molecules in strong laser fields.
Channel-resolved Multiorbital Double Ionization of Molecular Cl2 in an Intense Femtosecond Laser Field

Abstract:We measure the sequential double ionization and the subsequent Coulomb explosion of molecular Cl-2 in an intense femtosecond laser field by using the dc-sliced ion imaging technique. The results indicate that not only the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) but also the next two lower-lying molecular orbitals are involved in three distinguished reaction pathways. Pathways (1, 1)(2) and (1, 1)(3) are both dissociated from Cl-2(2+) -> Cl+ + Cl+ but with the two electrons removed from HOMO and HOMO-2 in reverse sequence, and populated on the ionic excited states (3)Pi(g) and (1)Pi(g), respectively. The kinetic energy release differences observed in these two channels are ascribed to the nuclear motion during the ionization process. For pathway (1, 1)(1) (also dissociated from Cl-2(2+) -> Cl+ + Cl+) populated on the ionic excited states (1)Pi(g), the isotropic angular distribution of the fragment ions is attributed to the combination of the electron density distribution of HOMO-1, the vibrational electronic wave-packet evolution, and the field excitation. Our results propose a feasible method to manipulate the electronic dynamics which takes place in the attosecond time domain via accurately tuned laser parameters of a femtosecond laser field.
