Abstract:The vibrational responses of single-crystal gold nanorods with different sizes and aspect ratios caused by femtosecond laser heating have been simulated, using a numerical method that integrates the two-temperature model into molecular dynamics. The fundamental extensional periods of nanorods are derived by analyzing the simulated responses of nanorods and then used to determine the elastic modulus of nanorods with the finite element calculations. It is shown that the modulus of nanorods increases and approaches the value of bulk gold with the increasing nanorod width. The dispersion curves for the fundamental extensional mode of nanorods as obtained by the analytical solutions and the finite element analysis are compared, confirming that the extensional periods of nanorods with an aspect ratio as small as ∼2.4 are fairly well described by the theory based on the long-wavelength limit.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser irradiation of single gold nanorods of various sizes is simulated for the investigation of the vibrations of the nanorods. The investigation uses a hybrid method that couples molecular dynamics (MD) with the two-temperature model (TTM). The extensional frequencies of the single gold nanorods are extracted from the atomic trajectories obtained by the MD simulations. In combination with continuum elasticity, the elastic moduli of the single gold nanorods are determined, along with the predicted extensional frequencies of the nanorods. It is shown that as the nanorod width increases, the modulus of the single gold nanorods also increases and approaches that of bulk gold. The notable softening of the elastic modulus is clearly shown for the smaller nanorods with widths of ∼8 and ∼12 nm.

Abstract:The ultrafast laser-excited breathing vibrations of gold nanodisks with different crystal structures have been studied via atomistic simulations. The vibrational periods and damping rates of nanodisks are obtained by the analysis of the simulated transient responses of nanodisks. It is shown that the breathing period of nanodisks is considerably dependent on their crystal structure, which is contrary to the cases for the breathing vibration of metal nanospheres and nanorods. Furthermore, single-crystal nanodisks exhibit much lower intrinsic damping as compared with polycrystalline nanodisks, for which the additional energy dissipation by the grain boundaries in the polycrystalline nanodisks could be one major factor.

Abstract:The intrinsic damping for the acoustic vibrations of single gold nanorods excited by ultrafast laser has been studied through the atomistic simulations. It is shown that the intrinsic damping for the breathing mode is strongly sensitive to the nanorod sizes, which is very likely due to the different energy redistributions between the vibrational modes of nanorods and could play a non-negligible role in the broad distribution of the experimentally measured breathing-mode quality factors. In comparison, the intrinsic damping for the extensional vibration of gold nanorods appears much less influenced by the variations of nanorod dimensions. Moreover, we also find that the intrinsic mechanism is a significant source for the vibrational damping of gold nanorods, particularly for the breathing mode.
General Existence of Flexural Mode Doublets in Nanowires Targeting Vectorial Sensing Applications

Abstract:Nanowires (NWs) are one of the fundamental building blocks for nanoscale devices, and have been frequently utilized as mechanical resonators. Earlier studies show that ultra-sensitive vectorial sensing toolkits can be fabricated by changing the flexural mode of NWs to oscillation doublets along two orthogonal directions. Based on in silico studies and the Timoshenko beam theory, this work finds that the dual orthogonal flexural mode of NWs can be effectively controlled through the proper selection of their growth direction. It is found that metallic NWs with a directional-independent shear modulus possess a single flexural mode. However, NWs with a directional-dependent shear modulus naturally exhibit flexural mode doublets, which do not disappear even with increasing slenderness ratio. Further studies show that such a feature generally exists in other NWs, such as Si NWs. Mimicking a pendulum configuration as used in NW-based scanning force microscopy, the cantilevered < 110 > Si NW demonstrates zeptogram mass resolution and a force sensitivity down to the order of 10(-24) N Hz(-1/2) (yN Hz(-1/2)) in both transverse directions. The findings in this work open up a new and facile avenue to fabricate 2D vectorial force sensors, which could enable ultra-sensitive and novel detection devices/systems for 2D effects, such as the anisotropy strength of atomic bonds.
Surface Effects on the Dual-Mode Vibration of < 1 1 0 > Silver Nanowires with Different Cross-Sections

Abstract:Dual-mode vibration of nanowires (NWs) has been reported experimentally through actuation of the NW at its resonance frequency, which is expected to open up a variety of new modalities for nanoelectromechanical systems that could operate in the nonlinear regime. In this work, we utilize large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the dual-mode vibration of < 1 1 0 > Ag NWs with triangular, rhombic and truncated rhombic cross-sections. By incorporating the generalized Young-Laplace equation into the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the influence of surface effects on the dual-mode vibration is studied. Due to the different lattice spacings in the principal axes of inertia of the {1 1 0} atomic layers, the NW is also modelled as a discrete system to reveal the influence from such a specific atomic arrangement. It is found that the < 1 1 0 > Ag NW will be under a dual-mode vibration if the actuation direction deviates from the two principal axes of inertia. The predictions of the two first mode natural frequencies by the classical beam model appear underestimated compared with the MD results, which are found to be enhanced by the discrete model. Particularly, the predictions by the beam theory with the contribution of surface effects are uniformly larger than the classical beam model, which exhibit better agreement with MD results for a larger cross-sectional size. However, for ultrathin NWs, current consideration of surface effects still experiences certain inaccuracy. In all, for all different cross-sections, the inclusion of surface effects is found to reduce the difference between the two first mode natural frequencies. This trend is observed to be consistent with MD results. This study provides a first comprehensive investigation on the dual-mode vibration of < 1 1 0 > oriented Ag NWs, which is supposed to benefit the applications of NWs that act as a resonating beam.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser-excited acoustic vibrations of single gold nanorods and nanospheres in water and vacuum have been studied using the finite element and atomistic simulations, for the individual intrinsic and fluid damping rates of vibrations of nanoparticles. It is shown that the damping of the extensional vibration of gold nanorods in water mainly results from the dissipation by the water. For the breathing mode of gold nanorods and nanospheres in water, both fluid damping and intrinsic dissipation account for the damping of nanoparticles, with more significant fluid damping effect. Further simulations for gold nanorods with different truncated tips demonstrate that the damping of the breathing mode of nanorods is sensitive to the sizes of truncated rod tips, which could be one of mechanisms for the experimentally observed large particle-to-particle variations of breathing quality factors of gold nanorods.

Abstract:The vibrations of gold nanowires and nanorods are investigated numerically in the framework of continuum elasticity using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. Special attention is paid to identify the vibrations relevant in Raman scattering experiments. A comprehensive description of the vibrations of nanorods is proposed by determining their symmetry, comparing with standing waves in the corresponding nanowires and estimating their Raman intensity. The role of experimentally relevant parameters such as the anisotropic cubic lattice structure, the presence of faceted lateral surfaces and the shape of the ends of the nanorods is evaluated. Elastic anisotropy is shown to play a significant role contrarily to the presence of facets. Localized vibrations are found for nanorods with flat ends. Their evolution as the shape of the ends is changed to half-spheres is discussed.

Beat Phenomena in Metal Nanowires, and Their Implications for Resonance-Based Elastic Property Measurements.

Abstract:The elastic properties of 1D nanostructures such as nanowires are often measured experimentally through actuation of the nanowire at its resonance frequency, and then relating the resonance frequency to the elastic stiffness using elementary beam theory. In the present work, we utilize large scale molecular dynamics simulations to report a novel beat phenomenon in [110] oriented Ag nanowires. The beat phenomenon is found to arise from the asymmetry of the lattice spacing in the orthogonal elementary directions of the [110] nanowire,i.e., [-110] and [001] directions, which results in two different principal moments of inertia. Because of this, actuations imposed along any other direction are found to decompose into two orthogonal vibrational components based on the actuation angle relative to these two elementary directions, with this phenomenon being generalizable to <110> FCC nanowires of different materials (Cu, Au, Ni, Pd and Pt).The beat phenomenon is explained using a discrete moment of inertia model based on the hard sphere assumption, the model is utilized to show that surface effects enhance the beat phenomenon, while the effect is reduced with increasing nanowires cross-sectional size or aspect ratio.Most importantly, due to the existence of the beat phenomena, we demonstrate that in resonance experiments only a single frequency component is expected to be observed, particularly when the damping ratio is relatively large or very small.Furthermore, for a large range of actuation angles, the lower frequency is more likely to be detected than the higher one,which implies the experimental predictions of Young's modulus obtained from resonance may in fact be under predictions. The present study therefore has significant implications for experimental interpretations of Young's modulus as obtained via resonance testing.

Abstract:Acoustic vibrations of single gold nanorods with various widths and aspect ratios in water have been studied by the continuum finite element simulations in the time domain. As compared to the earlier analytical studies, lower quality factors of nanorods due to the fluid are obtained by the finite element calculations. Especially for the extensional mode, the quality factors predicted by the approximate analytical models can be several times our results. Nonmonotonic dependence of the quality factors of nanorods on the aspect ratio of nanorod is observed for both extensional and breathing modes. For a given aspect ratio, the extensional and breathing quality factors of nanorods are increased with the increase of the nanorod width. Further simulations with involving the heat transfer between the nanorod and the surrounding water show that while causing negligible changes in the frequencies of the nanorod, the variations in the local temperature and viscosity of the surrounding water lead to some, but not considerable, increase in the quality factors of the nanorod.

Abstract:Nanoporous metals are a class of novel nanomaterials with potential applications in many fields such as sensing, catalysis, and fuel cells. The present paper is aimed to investigate atomic mechanisms associated with the uniaxial tensile deformation behavior of nanoporous gold. A phase field method is adopted to generate the bicontinuous open-cell porous microstructure of the material. Molecular dynamics simulations then reveal that the uniaxial tensile deformation in such porous materials is accompanied by an accumulation of stacking faults in ligaments along the loading direction and their junctions with neighboring ligaments, as well as the formation of Lomer–Cottrell locks at such junctions. The tensile strain leads to progressive necking and rupture of some ligaments, ultimately resulting in failure of the material. The simulation results also suggest scaling laws for the effective Young's modulus, yield stress, and ultimate strength as functions of the relative mass density and average ligament size in the material.
Ultrafast Laser-Induced Premelting and Structural Transformation of Gold Nanorod

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation of a gold nanorod has been simulated by a method that couples two-temperature model into molecular dynamics. Numerical results show that the surface premelting occurs prior to the initiation of planar defect and propagates from the surface layer into the inside of nanorod. Pressure relaxation leads to high-frequency temperature oscillation and two-way transformation between fcc and disordered atoms produced by the dynamic stresses. Partial dislocation cores are initiated on the crystal surfaces due to high stresses, and then noticeable planar defects including stacking faults and twin boundaries on {111} close-packed planes are developed. Finally, only parallel twin boundaries are present in the nanorod, showing favorable agreement with the experimental observation.
Coherent Acoustic Phonon Dynamics of Gold Nanorods and Nanospheres in a Poly(vinyl Alcohol) Matrix and Their Temperature Dependence by Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:The ultrafast dynamics of photoexcited gold nanorods (Au NRs) and gold nanospheres (Au NSs) dispersed in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films were investigated at various temperatures. The extensional mode of the coherent acoustic phonon vibration for Au NRs and breathing mode for Au NSs were both observed. For Au NRs, the vibrational periods in PVA decreased, and those in aqueous solution increased compared to the estimated periods in vacuum. These phenomena were not observed for Au NSs. When the temperature decreased from 296 to 10 K, the vibrational period of Au NRs (9 nm diameter, 46 nm length) decreased by 15%, but the decrease was only 3% for that of Au NSs (108 nm diameter). The environmental effects on coherent acoustic phonon vibrations for Au NRs were discussed in terms of mechanical interaction with the polymer matrix and liquid-solid coupling with the solution. A simplified model for the coupling of a vibrating rod to a viscoelastic environment, called a pile-soil interaction, was introduced for Au NRs in a PVA matrix, and the calculated periods were in good agreement with the experimental data. Our results indicate that viscous effects dominate for nanorods in water, whereas elastic effects dominate in PVA, resulting in frequency shifts with opposite signs. Moreover, because of the different interaction for extensional and breathing modes, the environmental sensitivity of Au NRs is obviously higher than that of Au NSs, and this difference can provide guidelines for mechanical applications of metal-polymer nanocomposites.
Strengthening Modulus and Softening Strength of Nanoporous Gold in Multiaxial Tension: Insights from Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:The functionalized applications of nanoporous metals place clear requirements on their basic mechanical properties, yet there is a lack of research on the mechanical response under multiaxial loading conditions. In this work, the mechanical behaviors of nanoporous gold under multiaxial tension are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. The mechanical properties under different loading conditions are compared and the microstructure evolution is analyzed to clarify the deformation mechanisms of nanoporous gold in biaxial and triaxial tension. It is found that the modulus of nanoporous gold in multiaxial tension is strengthened and the strength is softened compared to uniaxial tension. The failure of nanoporous gold in multiaxial tension is dominated by the progressive yielding, necking, and rupture of ligaments along the multiple uniaxial loading directions. The dislocation activity under multiaxial loads is more intense and more prone to plastic deformation, ultimately resulting in lower strength and smaller failure strain. The findings provide more insight into the understanding of the deformation mechanisms of nanoporous metals under complex stress states.

Deformation and ductile fracture of nanocrystalline gold ultrathin nanoribbon: Width effect

Abstract:<p>Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the mechanical properties of finite‐width nanocrystalline gold nanoribbons with a thickness of one grain size under tensile strain. We find strong variations in the Young's modulus and flow stress especially for the sample with narrow width. With statistical analysis, Young's modulus has a trend of increase with the decrease of width. Flow stress does not follow this trend. Ductile fracture is observed at large strain in these nanocrystalline nanoribbons, but the fracture strain and mechanism are different from those of thick films as observed in existing experiments. For small widths below 80 nm, fracture is a necking effect, while for larger widths, shear bands and formation of nanovoids due to stress concentration are the main mechanism. Voids are mainly distributed in special GBs that are parallel to the direction of the maximum principal stress of the plastic deformation tensor. We find there is a width regime (about 80–130 nm) for the ultrathin nanoribbon gold, which have good ductility and large fracture strain.</p>

Abstract:Radial breathing mode (RBM) oscillation is the most characteristic vibration mode in carbon nanotubes. Here we investigate the intrinsic behavior of RBM oscillations of structurally defined single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by combining Raman-scattering and electron-diffraction techniques on the same suspended nanotubes. The independent determination of RBM frequencies and nanotube structures allows us to establish conclusively the perfect linear relation between RBM frequencies and inverse nanotube diameters, which has been long speculated to hold in pristine SWNTs. Understanding the intrinsic diameter dependence of SWNT RBM oscillation not only is crucial for reliable Raman characterization of carbon nanotubes, but also enables quantitative probing of SWNT-environment interactions through the RBM oscillation frequency shift.

Abstract:Investigating coherent acoustic vibrations in nanostructured materials provides fundamental insights into optomechanical responses and microscopic energy flow. Extensive measurements of vibrational dynamics have been performed for a wide variety of nanoparticles and nanoparticle assemblies. However, virtually all of them show that only the dilation modes are launched after laser excitations, and the acoustic bending and torsional motions, which are commonly observed in photoexcited chemical bonds, are absent. Unambiguous identification and refined characterization of these "missing" modes have been a long-standing issue. In this report, we investigated the acoustic vibrational dynamics of individual Au nanoprisms on free-standing graphene substrates using an ultrafast high-sensitivity dark-field imaging approach in four-dimensional transmission electron microscopy. Following optical excitations, we observed low-frequency multiple-mode oscillations and higher superposition amplitudes at nanoprism corners and edges on the subnanoparticle level. In combination with finite-element simulations, we determined that these vibrational modes correspond to out-of-plane bending and torsional motions, superimposed by an overall tilting effect of the nanoprisms. The launch and relaxation processes of these modes are highly pertinent to substrate effects and nanoparticle geometries. These findings contribute to the fundamental understanding about acoustic dynamics of individual nanostructures and their interaction with substrates.
Mechanical Wave Propagation within Nanogold Granular Crystals

Abstract:We computationally investigate the wave propagation characteristics of nanoscopic granular crystals composed of one-dimensionally arrayed gold nanoparticles using molecular dynamics simulation. We examine two basic configurations, i.e. homogeneous lattices and diatomic lattices with mass-mismatch. We discover that homogeneous lattices of gold nanospheres support weakly dissipative and highly localized solitary wave at 300 K, while diatomic lattices have a good tuning ability of transmittance and wave speed. We establish a validated nonlinear spring contact model with the consideration of complex interactions between gold nanospheres which reveals the physical nature of wave behaviors at nanoscale. This work sheds light on the application of nanogold as a novel mechanical wave tuner, qualitatively and fundamentally different from its counterpart granular materials at meso- and macroscale.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and breaking behaviors of the [100]-oriented single-crystal gold nanowires containing a set of defect ratios have been studied at different temperatures using molecular dynamics simulations. The size of the nanowire is 10a × 10a × 30a (a stands for lattice constant, 0.408 nm for gold). The mechanical strengths of the nanowires decrease with the increasing temperature. However, the defects that enhance the local thermal energy have improved the nanowire mechanical strength under a wide range of temperature. Comparing to the single-crystal nanowire, the existence of the atomic defects extends the elastic deformation showing a larger yield strain. By summarizing 300 samples at each temperature, the statistical breaking position distribution shows that the nanowire breaking behavior is sensitive to the atomic defects when the defect ratio is 5 % at 100 K, whereas the ratio is 1 % when temperatures are 300 and 500 K.

Abstract:It has been known for decades that nanopores produced by selective leaching during galvanic corrosion can lead to dramatic loss of materials ductility and strength under tension. However, the underlying atomic mechanisms of the nanopore induced embrittlement remain to be poorly known. Here we report in situ observations of the deformation and failure of dealloyed nanoporous gold by utilizing the state-of-the art aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and fast direct electron detection camera. Our time-resolved atomic observations reveal that the brittle failure of the nanoporous gold originates from plastic instability of individual gold ligaments by the interplay between dislocation plasticity and stress-driving surface diffusion.
