Abstract:The image segmentation method we use for leucocytes is based on image distance transformation, combining the region and edge approach, taking full advantage of image information. According to the shape, texture and color appearance of cells, we select 22 feature values and measure them. The classifier is designed on the statistical classification. A test for recognizing 831 leucocytes in 560 images shows that the classification accuracy is 96%. Clinical experts confirm this system; for it can automatically recognize leucocytes by pattern recognition technique, and it is demonstrably valid in practice.

Abstract:The problem of image segmentation for automatic recognition of leukocyte image is solved by using the color parameters. Segmentation of leukocyte is accomplished by first applying the thresholding method to segment the nuclear and background region and then the region expanding method with the aggregation criterion is used based on color similarity and convexity criteria. Feasibility of this approach is validated by experiments.
A Method to Distinguish Leukocytes from Marrow Cell Images Based on Fuzzy Clustering

Abstract:A fuzzy clustering recognition method is proposed to identify cells from sliced marrow cell image. In our image processing, leukocytes can be distinguished against other cells like red cell, megakaryocyte, and cytoplasm. The leukocytes can be further distinguished into promyelocyte, myelocyte or metamyelocyte. Probably the ratio of the counts of these three kinds of leukocytes can be used as the indication of leukemia relapse. Previous work on this project involves the recognition using pixel distribution and probability lays the background of data processing and preprocessing. Constraints based on size, pixel distribution, and grayscale pattern are used for the successful counting and positioning of individual cells. This shape, pattern and color based method can reach satisfied counting and we hope it can be used to get the relative positions for the research of pro-ALIP structure.

Abstract:This paper present three characteristic functions which can express the luminance distribute characteristic much better. Based on these functions a region classification algorithm is presented. The algorithm can offer more information on regions' similarity and greatly improve the efficiency and performance of match seeking in fractal coding. It can be widely applied to many kinds of fractal coding algorithms. Analysis and experimental results proved that it can offer more information on luminance distribute characteristics among regions and greatly improve the decoding quality and compression ratio with holding the running speed.

Abstract:Objective: To develop and apply automatic recognition system of leukocyte images.Methods: Data mining,pattern recognition,artificial intelligence and other techniques were applied to design this new system.Its accuracy,repeatability error,omission error,reliability,detection rate and correlation coefficients were evaluated according to manual differential counts(reference method).Results: The accuracy is 94.9%;repeatability error is 0.1%;omission error is 0.6%;reliability is 97.6%and detection rate is below 5 minutes per slide respectively.The correlation coefficients are the highest for neutrophils(0.997 1),lymphocytes(0.994 2) and eosinophils(0.989 9).For monocytes,the correlation coefficient is 0.982 2.The lowest correlations are basophils(0.852 8) and other cells(0.979 8).Conclusion: The evaluation shows this system has performance at least equal to that of direct clinical microscopy and could meet the clinical demand.

Abstract:Region labeling for binary image is an important part of image processing. For the special use of small and multi-objects labeling, a new region labeling algorithm based on boundary tracking is proposed in this paper. Experiments prove that our algorithm is feasible and efficient, and even faster than some of other algorithms.

Abstract:In the detection of anemia, leukemia and other blood diseases, the number and type of leukocytes are essential evaluation parameters. However, the conventional leukocyte counting method is not only quite time-consuming but also error-prone. Consequently, many automation methods are introduced for the diagnosis of medical images. It remains difficult to accurately extract related features and count the number of cells under the variable conditions such as background, staining method, staining degree, light conditions and so on. Therefore, in order to adapt to various complex situations, we consider RGB color space, HSI color space, and the linear combination of G, H and S components, and propose a fast and accurate algorithm for the segmentation of peripheral blood leukocytes in this paper. First, the nucleus of leukocyte was separated by using the stepwise averaging method. Then based on the interval-valued fuzzy sets, the cytoplasm of leukocyte was segmented by minimizing the fuzzy divergence. Next, post-processing was carried out by using the concave-convex iterative repair algorithm and the decision mechanism of candidate mask sets. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing non-fuzzy sets methods. Among the methods based on fuzzy sets, the interval-valued fuzzy sets perform slightly better than interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets and intuitionistic fuzzy sets.

Abstract:Most basic fractal compression classification algorithms are classified by a single feature,and they all involve a huge amount of machine operation in the matching search.An algorithm of fractal compression based on irregular region segmentation and gray sort classification was put forward.In order to reduce the search range,the image blocks were classified according to the gray scale values of the binary images between the original image and the one obtained by dividing the original image with the method of irregular region segmentation.Experiment results show that the algorithm can significantly reduce the coding time without sacrificing the quality of decoding.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose using the multiresolution method to enhance the speed of the fractal image compression First, we apply the wavelet decomposition to the domains and the ranges to obtain their multiresolution representation Then, irt the searching process, compute the matching error from the lowest resolution to the highest, Once the matching error for a domain is bigger than the current minimal error in one level, the domain is refused. Since most domains consist primarily of low frequency component, it is often that unsuitable domains are refused in the low resolution. in cooperation with the quadtree partition, our method greatly reduce the encoding time Moreover, we adopt a new transforming form to speed up decoding.

Abstract:To extract texture features from medical images, the approaches for multi-scale complexity and multi-scale fractal dimension were proposed in this paper. The extracted texture features were used in the medical image retrieval experiments. The complexity measurements used include permutation entropy and 2D-C0 complexity. The former is used to analyze one dimensional signal, and the latter is used to analyze two dimensional one. Comparison experiments were carried out between our approaches and others' approaches in some literatures. Preliminary experimental results show that our approaches can effectively describe the texture information of medical images. Furthermore, the image retrieval results are encouraging.

Abstract:Digital pathology and microscope image analysis is widely used in comprehensive studies of cell morphology. Identification and analysis of leukocytes in blood smear images, acquired from bright field microscope, are vital for diagnosing many diseases such as hepatitis, leukaemia and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The major challenge for robust and accurate identification and segmentation of leukocyte in blood smear images lays in the large variations of cell appearance such as size, colour and shape of cells, the adhesion between leukocytes (white blood cells, WBCs) and erythrocytes (red blood cells, RBCs), and the emergence of substantial dyeing impurities in blood smear images. In this paper, an end-to-end leukocyte localization and segmentation method is proposed, named LeukocyteMask, in which pixel-level prior information is utilized for supervisor training of a deep convolutional neural network, which is then employed to locate the region of interests (ROI) of leukocyte, and finally segmentation mask of leukocyte is obtained based on the extracted ROI by forward propagation of the network. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the propose method and both the quantitative and qualitative comparisons with existing methods indicate that LeukocyteMask achieves a state-of-the-art performance for the segmentation of leukocyte in terms of robustness and accuracy.

Abstract:Automated fundus screening is becoming a significant programme of telemedicine in ophthalmology. Instant quality evaluation of uploaded retinal images could decrease unreliable diagnosis. In this work, we propose fractal dimension of retinal vasculature as an easy, effective and explainable indicator of retinal image quality. The pipeline of our approach is as follows: utilize image pre-processing technique to standardize input retinal images from possibly different sources to a uniform style; then, an improved deep learning empowered vessel segmentation model is employed to extract retinal vessels from the pre-processed images; finally, a box counting module is used to measure the fractal dimension of segmented vessel images. A small fractal threshold (could be a value between 1.45 and 1.50) indicates insufficient image quality. Our approach has been validated on 30,644 images from four public database.

Abstract:To analyze the development of leukemia in bone marrow, a C-Mean fuzzy clustering recognition method is proposed to identify cells from sliced marrow images so that the movement of promyelocytes to the blood can be tracked. In our image processing, red cells, leukocytes, megakaryocyte, and cytoplasm carry the same color because of the failure of staining. We use the gray value distribution, the texture patterns to construct a cluster based evaluation groups to establish the minimum object function value which when it fall in the desired category, indicates the matching of the objects and thus we can obtain the number of the specific cells in the picture. Multiple pictures are tested using this method. The 80% recognition rate can be easily reached. There are cases when the pictures are poorly illuminated or blurred which can hardly be recognized, these kinds of pictures are manually removed because of the limitation of digital picture processing.

Abstract:Based on the concept of lacunarity in fractal geometry, we developed a statistical approach to texture description, which yields highly discriminative feature with strong robustness to a wide range of transformations, including pho- tometric changes and geometric changes. The texture feature is constructed by concatenating the lacunarity-related parameters estimated from the multi-scale local binary patterns of image. Benefiting from the ability of lacunarity analysis to distinguish spatial patterns, our method is able to characterize the spatial distribution of local image structures from multiple scales. The proposed feature was applied to texture classification and has demonstrated excellent performance in comparison with several state-of-the- art approaches on four benchmark datasets.

Abstract:This study is to investigate a new representation of a partition of an image domain into a number of regions using a level set method derived from a statistical framework. The proposed model is composed of evolving simple closed planar curves by a region-based force determined by maximizing the posterior image densities over all possible partitions of the image plane containing three terms: a Bayesian term based on the prior probability, a regularity term adopted to avoid the generation of excessively irregular and small segmented regions, and a term based on a region merging prior related to region area, which is applied to allow the number of regions to vary automatically during curve evolution and therefore can optimize the objective functional implicitly with respect to the number of regions. This formulation leads to a system of coupled curve evolution equations, which is easily amenable to a level set implementation, and an unambiguous segmentation because the evolving regions form a partition of the image domain at all times during curve evolution. Given these advantages, the proposed method can get good performance and experiments show promising segmentation results on both synthetic and real images.

Abstract:In order to explore the leukocyte distribution of human being to predict the recurrent leukemia, the mouse marrow cells are investigated to get the possible indication of the recurrence.This paper uses the C-mean fuzzy clustering recognition method to identify cells from sliced mouse marrow image.In our image processing, red cells, leukocytes, megakaryocyte, and cytoplasm can not be separated by their staining color, RGB combinations are used to classify the image into 8 sectors so that the searching area can be matched with these sectors.The gray value distribution and the texture patterns are used to construct membership function.Previous work on this project involves the recognition using pixel distribution and probability lays the background of data processing and preprocessing.Constraints based on size, pixel distribution, and grayscale pattern are used for the successful counting of individual cells.Tests show that this shape, pattern and color based method can reach satisfied counting under similar illumination condition.
Improved multifractal algorithm for analyzing image singularity

Abstract:In order to analyze image singularity and the features of the different sections,a new multifractal algorithm based on sub-pixel edge measure is proposed.The greylevel gradient area density function and edge-measure of random subsets(radii can reach the precision of sub-pixel) were obtained by the square aperture sampling law on the position of sub-pixel.Utilized the multifractal frame,the image could be segmented into a series of fractal sets of the different singularity exponents.At the same time,the reconstruction algorithm was presented by using the different information content of multifractal subset.So the image could be divided from texture to edge precisely.At last,the algorithm was analyzed and examined.The data showed that the reconstruction PSNR was 14.76dB from the edge extracted by 3×3 sub-pixels method.The results show that the peak signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstruction image depends on the extracted image edge quality and the coefficient ratio of the reconstruction and the information of the different layers of the image are identical with the important information from the human visual reception.
A method for image segmentation based on fractal theory

Abstract:Based on fractal characters, a method for segmenting man-made objects is presented, in which fractal model is used to describe the natural background. The difference between man-made objects and the natural scene in fractal characters is enhanced by using the probabilistic relaxation, and the difference is also employed to segment man-made objects adaptively. Experiments have shown the effectiveness and feasibility of the approach.

Abstract:Recently, the clinical role of image processing has been developed considerably. The resources of this new technology were exploited for the needs of doctors in their practice. In this study, we propose a computer vision for tracking the uterine collar cancer. Here, we present three stages: preprocessing, segmentation, and classification. The segmentation stage uses a multifractal algorithm based on the computation of the singularity exponents; its role is separating each cell on its core and its cytoplasm, which permits the analysis of each one in the recognition stage for deducing a response about the malignity of the cell. However, the classification is performed by an algorithm of area growth. Knowing that there are four layers in the epithelium, the classification allows for learning the type of each cell in an image for organizing the research in the recognition stage. Thus, we contribute to the creation of a database for the recognition stage. This base contains the core and cytoplasm images with information about the type of each cell. Promising results were obtained with a short execution time that permits the start of the recognition stage. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The analysis of erythrocyte morphology is an important determinant in the diagnosis of many diseases. The development of more reliable and automated image analysis techniques for Red Blood Cells (RBCs) image remains an important goal in computational molecular biology. Due to the characteristic of RBCs image which captured by electron microscope (EM), a novel cascading red blood cells segmentation method is proposed. Firstly the feasibility of threshold segmentation has been analyzed and a method based on the number of connected component for coarse segmentation is put forward, successfully extracts the RBCs areas from the images with accuracy 97.52%. Then an marked watershed algorithm bases on random Hough circle detection and Mathematical Morphology is proposed for overlapped RBCs in original image. Compared to the widely used method, the accuracy of this method has improved obviously. The experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to different RBCs images in automatically separating RBCs, the extraction rate reached 82.17%. At the same time, the automatic counting accuracy up to 96.24%.
