Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated that the microsphere can discern the details of the object whose sizes are below the conventional diffractive limit and such super-resolution capability can be reinforced if semi-immersing the corresponding microspheres in liquid droplet, producing a sharper contrast and a comparatively smaller magnification factor. The microsphere is considered as a channel that connects the near-field evanescent wave and the transmission one in far field. A conjecture based on this is proposed to explain the mechanism of super-resolution and the corresponding phenomenon.

Abstract:Superscattering, theoretically predicted in 2010 and experimentally observed in 2019, is an exotic scattering phenomenon of light from subwavelength nanostructures. In principle, superscattering allows for an arbitrarily large total scattering cross section, due to the degenerate resonance of eigenmodes or channels. Consequently, the total scattering cross section of a superscatterer can be significantly enhanced, far exceeding the so-called single-channel limit. Superscattering offers a unique avenue for enhancing light-matter interactions and can enable numerous practical applications, ranging from sensing, light trapping, bioimaging, and communications to optoelectronics. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent progress and developments in the superscattering of light, with a specific focus on elucidating its theoretical origins, experimental observations, and manipulations. Moreover, we offer an outlook on future research directions in superscattering, including potential realizations of directional superscattering, scattering-free plasmonic superscattering, enhancement of free-electron radiation and the Purcell effect via superscatterers, inelastic superscattering, and superscattering of non-electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:A sub-wavelength particle with a total scattering cross section that exceeds the single channel limit is referred to as a superscatterer, which can provide ability to control light in nanoscale. A variety of superscatter structures have been suggested, most of them are typically constructed with strong forward scattering but minor backscattering. This unusual behavior can be attributed to the superposition of resonant modes in adjacent angular momentum channels. We reveal the mechanism of super backscattering for subwavelength column, which can be formed by recombining non-adjacent resonant modes, as confirmed by our numerical analysis.

Abstract:Superscattering, i.e., a phenomenon of the scattering cross section from a subwavelength object exceeding the single-channel limit, has important prospects in enhanced sensing/spectroscopy, solar cells, and biomedical imaging. Superscattering can be typically constructed only at a single frequency regime, and depends critically on the inescapable material losses. Under such realistic conditions, superscattering has not been predicted nor observed to exist simultaneously at multiple frequency regimes. Here we introduce multifrequency superscattering in a subwavelength hyperbolic structure, which can be made from artificial metamaterials or from naturally-existing materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (BN), and show the advantage of such hyperbolic materials for reducing structural complexity. The underlying mechanism is revealed to be the multimode resonances at multiple frequency regimes as appear in BN due to the peculiar dispersion of phonon-polaritons. Importantly, the multifrequency superscattering has a high tolerance to material losses and some structural variations, bringing the concept of multifrequency superscattering closer to useful and realistic conditions.

Abstract:Photonic and plasmonic quasicrystals, comprising well-designed and regularly-arranged patterns but lacking spatial translational symmetry, show sharp diffraction patterns resulting from their long-range order in spatial domain. Here we demonstrate that plasmonic structure, which is macroscopically arranged with spatial periodicity and microscopically constructed by random metal nanostructures, can also exhibit the diffraction effect experimentally, despite both of the translational symmetry and long-range order are broken in spatial domain simultaneously. With strategically pre-formed metal nano-seeds, the tunable macroscopically periodic (macro-periodic) pattern composed from microscopically random (micro-random) nanoplate-based silver structures are fabricated chemically through photon driven growth using simple light source with low photon energy and low optical power density. The geometry of the micro-structure can be further modified through simple thermal annealing. While the random metal nanostructures suppress high-order Floquet spectra of the spatial distribution of refractive indices, the maintained low-order Floquet spectra after the ensemble averaging are responsible for the observed diffraction effect. A theoretical approach has also been established to describe and understand the macro-periodic and micro-random structures with different micro-geometries. The easy fabrication and comprehensive understanding of this metal structure will be beneficial for its application in plasmonics, photonics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Inspired by the concept of superscattering in optics, we for the first time theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate the superscattering phenomenon in water waves. The subwavelength superscatterer is constructed by multi-layered concentric cylinders with an inhomogeneous depth profile. The superscatterer breaks the long-held single-channel scattering limit by several times and thus significantly enhances the total scattering strength. The underlying mechanism originates from the near degeneracy of the resonances of multiple channels. We fabricate the superscatterer prototype and experimentally measure the near-field patterns, which are consistent with theoretical prediction and numerical simulation. Our study opens a new avenue to strengthen water-wave scattering and deepen the understanding in water waves, which can be useful for ocean energy harvesting and harbor protection.

Abstract:We provide a theoretical discussion of the scattering cross section of individual subwavelength structures. We show that, in principle, an arbitrarily large total cross section can be achieved, provided that one maximizes contributions from a sufficiently large number of channels. As a numerical demonstration, we present a subwavelength nanorod with a plasmonic-dielectric-plasmonic layer structure, where the scattering cross section far exceeds the single-channel limit, even in the presence of loss.

Abstract:Superscatterer is an intriguing electromagnetic device, which can enhance the wave scattering of a given object with an arbitrary magnification factor in principle. However, observing the transient buildup of a superscatterer in numerical time domain still has not been investigated yet. In this paper, by using the dispersive finite difference time domain method, the transient response of a dispersive superscatterer created with monotonic optical transformation function is studied. We find that the time delay grows dramatically when the magnification factor increases. In addition, we notice an interesting phenomenon that, placing a scattering body with more complicated structure leads to longer time delays. These findings are very useful to reveal the physics behind the superscatterer. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Recently, a special scattering phenomenon due to nanostructured metallic-dielectric particles was reported. With the plasmonic dispersion of metals at optical frequencies, these nanoparticles can exhibit a "scattering dark state," showing a theoretically zero Rayleigh scattering. In this paper, aiming to implement such particles at microwave frequencies, we explain this scattering state using antenna theory. The analytical result shows that when the distance between two short dipoles approaches zero, their far-field radiations can be mutually canceled at the frequency where the derived condition is satisfied. Furthermore, simulation and experiments are performed to verify that either a single particle or a random collection of such particles could have omnidirectional invisibility. The derived theory also provides a new understanding to conventional microwave structures such as frequency-selective surfaces. Our method can be applied to a broad spectrum from radio frequency to optical regime, and can potentially inspire new applications such as perfect antenna radomes.

We show that the scattering cross section of such a particle can be significantly enhanced by employing multiple resonances with different total angular momenta, and by ensuring that all these resonances have almost the same frequency and operate in the overcoupling region.

Abstract:Superscattering, corresponding to the scattering cross section of a scatterer being significantly larger than its single-channel limit, has attracted increasing attention due to its huge potential for practical applications. The realization of superscattering relies on the overlapping of multiple resonance modes in a scatterer. Accordingly, superscattering phenomena have been observed primarily in alternating plasmonic/dielectric layered structures which support surface plasmons. However, such systems suffer from high Ohmic loss due to the excitation of surface plasmons, hindering broader application of the plasmonic/dielectric hybrid systems. On the other hand, subwavelength structures based on high permittivity dielectric materials (such as ferroelectric ceramics) offer expansive opportunities to realize electric and magnetic resonances at microwave and THz frequencies. Here, based on optimization methods involving mode analysis, we numerically demonstrate superscattering from individual multilayered dielectric cylinders. The maximum scattering cross section achieved is determined by the collective contributions from several resonance modes excited in a complex cylinder. Our results reveal that a combination of mode analysis and a custom optimization method can enable efficient designs of complex dielectric structures exhibiting exotic scattering responses.

Abstract:Enhancing the scattering of light from subwavelength structures is of both fundamental and practical significance. While the scattering cross section from each channel cannot exceed the single-channel limit, it is recently reported that the total cross section can far exceed this limit if one overlaps the contribution from many channels. Such a phenomenon about enhancing the scattering from subwavelength structures in free space is denoted as the superscattering in some literature. However, the scatterer in practical scenarios is not always in free space but may be embedded in environments with non-unity refractive index n. The influence of environments on the superscattering remains elusive. Here the superscattering from subwavelength structures in the isotropic environment with near-zero index are theoretically investigated. Importantly, a smaller n can lead to a larger total cross section for superscattering. The underlying mechanism is that a smaller n can give rise to a larger single-channel limit. Our work thus indicates that the scattering from subwavelength structures can be further enhanced if one simultaneously maximizes the single-channel limit and the contribution from many channels.

Abstract:Based on the concept of complementary media, we propose a novel design which can enhance the electromagnetic wave scattering cross section of an object so that it looks like a scatterer bigger than the scale of the device. Such a "superscatterer" is realized by coating a negative refractive material shell on a perfect electrical conductor cylinder. The scattering field is analytically obtained by Mie scattering theory, and confirmed by full-wave simulations numerically. Such a device can be regarded as a cylindrical concave mirror for all angles.

Abstract:The energy-momentum dispersion relation is a fundamental property of plasmonic systems. In this paper, we show that the method of dispersion engineering can be used for the design of ultracompact graphene-based superscatterers. Based on the Bohr model, the dispersion relation of the equivalent planar waveguide is engineered to enhance the scattering cross section of a dielectric cylinder. Bohr conditions with different orders are fulfilled in multiple dispersion curves at the same resonant frequency. Thus, the resonance peaks from the first-and second-order scattering terms are overlapped in the deep-subwavelength scale by delicately tuning the gap thickness between two graphene layers. Using this ultracompact graphene-based superscatterer, the scattering cross section of the dielectric cylinder can be enhanced by five orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Abstract We study the Mie-like scattering from an open subwavelength resonator made of a high-index dielectric material, when its parameters are tuned to the regime of interfering resonances. We uncover a novel mechanism of superscattering, closely linked to strong coupling of the resonant modes and described by the physics of bound states in the continuum (BICs). We demonstrate that the enhanced scattering occurs due to constructive interference described by the Friedrich-Wintgen mechanism of interfering resonances, allowing to push the scattering cross section of a multipole resonance beyond the currently established limit. We develop a general non-Hermitian model to describe interfering resonances of the quasi-normal modes, and study subwavelength dielectric nonspherical resonators exhibiting avoided crossing resonances associated with quasi-BIC states. We confirm our theoretical findings by a scattering experiment conducted in the microwave frequency range. Our results reveal a new strategy to boost scattering from non-Hermitian systems, suggesting important implications for metadevices.

From Fano-like interference to superscattering with a single metallic nanodisk.

Abstract:Superscattering was theoretically proposed to significantly enhance the scattering cross-section of a subwavelength nanostructure, far exceeding its single-resonance limit by employing resonances of multiple plasmonic modes. By numerical simulation, we design a subwavelength nanodisk as a simple candidate to achieve superscattering. Due to the phase retardation, the subradiant mode can be excited and interact with the superradiant mode in both spatial and frequency domains. By changing the height and diameter of the nanodisk, we show high tunability of the mode interaction and evolution of the resulting spectral features from Fano-like resonance to superscattering. A model of two-driven coupled oscillators is proposed to quantitatively analyze the spectral evolution. We find that the evolution is caused by not only alignment of the resonant wavelengths of related plasmonic modes, but also reasonably high loss. We show that superscattering doubles the near-field intensity, potentially enhancing the signal 16 times for SERS and 4 times for SEIRS, and doubles the far-field intensity and decreases the peak linewidth, improving the figure of merit for plasmonic refractometric sensing. Our study provides quantitative physical insight into understanding superscattering and Fano-like resonances in a single nanoparticle.

Abstract:We realize collective enhancement and suppression of light scattered by an array of tweezer-trapped Rb87 atoms positioned within a strongly coupled Fabry-Pérot optical cavity. We illuminate the array with light directed transverse to the cavity axis, in the low saturation regime, and detect photons scattered into the cavity. For an array with integer-optical-wavelength spacing each atom scatters light into the cavity with nearly identical scattering amplitude, leading to an observed N2 scaling of cavity photon number as the atom number increases stepwise from N=1 to N=8 . By contrast, for an array with half-integer-wavelength spacing, destructive interference of scattering amplitudes yields a nonmonotonic, subradiant cavity intensity versus N . By analyzing the polarization of light emitted from the cavity, we find that Rayleigh scattering can be collectively enhanced or suppressed with respect to Raman scattering. We observe also that atom-induced shifts and broadenings of the cavity resonance are precisely tuned by varying the atom number and positions.
