Abstract:Micro- and nanoresonators, which enable light trapping in small volumes for extended durations, play a crucial role in modern photonics. The optical response of these resonators is determined by their fundamental resonances, known as quasinormal modes (QNMs). Over the past decade, the electromagnetic theory of QNMs has undergone significant development and has now reached a level of maturity that allows its reliable application to numerous contemporary electromagnetic problems. In this review, we explore recent applications of QNM theory for designing and understanding micro and nanoresonators. We highlight why QNMs provide deep physical insights and enhance computational efficiency in scenarios involving mode hybridization and perturbation.

Abstract:Resonances, also known as quasi normal modes (QNM) in the non-Hermitian case, play an ubiquitous role in all domains of physics ruled by wave phenomena, notably in continuum mechanics, acoustics, electrodynamics, and quantum theory. In this paper, we present a QNM expansion for dispersive systems, recently applied to photonics but based on sixty year old techniques in mechanics. The resulting numerical algorithm appears to be physically agnostic, that is independent of the considered physical problem and can therefore be implemented as a mere toolbox in a nonlinear eigenvalue computation library.

Quasinormal-mode modeling and design in nonlinear nano-optics

Abstract:Based on quasinormal-mode theory, we propose a novel approach enabling a deep analytical insight into the multi-parameter design and optimization of nonlinear photonic structures at subwavelength scale. A key distinction of our method from previous formulations relying on multipolar Mie-scattering expansions is that it directly exploits the natural resonant modes of the nanostructures, which provide the field enhancement to achieve significant nonlinear efficiency. Thanks to closed-form expression for the nonlinear overlap integral between the interacting modes, we illustrate the potential of our method with a two-order-of-magnitude boost of second harmonic generation in a semiconductor nanostructure, by engineering both the sign of $\chi^{(2)}$ at subwavelength scale and the structure of the pump beam.

Abstract:We report a self-consistent quasinormal mode theory for nanometer scale electromagnetism where the possible nonlocal and quantum effects are treated through quantum surface responses. With Feibelman's frequency-dependent \textit{d} parameters to describe the quantum surface responses, we formulate the source-free Maxwell's equations into a generalized linear eigenvalue problem to define the quasinormal modes. We then construct an orthonormal relation for the modes and consequently unlock the powerful toolbox of modal analysis. The orthonormal relation is validated by the reconstruction of the full numerical results through modal contributions. Significant changes in the landscape of the modes are observed due to the incorporation of the quantum surface responses for a number of nanostructures. Our semi-analytical modal analysis enables transparent physical interpretation of the spontaneous emission enhancement of a dipolar emitter as well as the near-field and far-field responses of planewave excitations in the nanostructures.

Abstract:We develop a model for the coupling of quasi-normal modes in open photonic systems consisting of two resonators. By expressing the modes of the coupled system as a linear combination of the modes of the individual particles, we obtain a generalized eigenvalue problem involving small size dense matrices. We apply this technique to dielectric rod dimmer of rectangular cross section for Transverse Electric (TE) polarization in a two-dimensional (2D) setup. The results of our model show excellent agreement with full-wave finite element simulations. We provide a convergence analysis, and a simplified model with a few modes to study the influence of the relative position of the two resonators. This model provides interesting physical insights on the coupling scheme at stake in such systems and pave the way for systematic and efficient design and optimization of resonances in more complicated systems, for applications including sensing, antennae and spectral filtering.

Abstract:Any optical structure possesses resonance modes and its response to an excitation can be decomposed onto the quasinormal and numerical modes of discretized Maxwell's operator. In this paper, we consider a dielectric permittivity that is a N-pole Lorentz function of the pulsation $\omega$. We propose a common formalism and obtain different formulas for the modal expansion. The non-uniqueness of the excitation coeffcient is due to a choice of the linearization of Maxwell's equation with respect to $\omega$ and of the form of the source term. We make the link between the numerical discrete modal expansion and analytical formulas that can be found in the literature. We detail the formulation of dispersive Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) in order to keep a linear eigenvalue problem. We also give an algorithm to regain an orthogonal basis for degenerate modes. Numerical results validate the different formulas and compare their accuracy.
Quasinormal Mode Expansion Method for Resonators with Partial-fraction Material Dispersion

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish a Quasinormal Mode (QNM) solver for open resonators made of materials with general dispersion which can be modeled by partial fractions, and develop the corresponding analytical QNM expansion method (QNMEM) for both discrete and periodic resonant structures. When the response of the resonators is dominant by several leading QNMs, a simplified QNMEM can be used to analyze their spectra in a reasonable accuracy. The simplified QNMEM is used to analyze the spectra of the metal-dielectric-metal perfect absorber, which has the advantages of both high computation speed and clear physical insight.

Abstract:Extensive research has focused on Mie modes in dielectric nanoresonators, enabling the creation of thin optical devices surpassing their bulk counterparts. This study investigates the interactions between two fundamental Mie modes, electric and magnetic dipoles, and the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode. Analytical, simulation, and experimental analyses reveal that the presence of the ENZ substrate significantly modifies these modes despite a large size mismatch. Electric and magnetic dipole modes, both with ∼12 THz line widths, exhibit 21 and 26 THz anticrossings, respectively, when coupled to the ENZ mode, indicating strong coupling. We also demonstrate that this strongly coupled system yields notably large subpicosecond nonlinear responses. Our results establish a solid foundation for designing functional, nonlinear, dynamic dielectric metasurfaces with ENZ materials.

Abstract:We derive two methods for simultaneously controlling the resonance frequency, linewidth and multipolar nature of the resonances of radially symmetric structures. Firstly, we formulate an eigenvalue problem for a global shift in the permittivity of the structure to place a resonance at a particular complex frequency. Next, we employ quasi-normal mode perturbation theory to design radially graded structures with resonances at desired frequencies.

Abstract:Quasinormal modes (QNMs) are essential for understanding the stability and resonances of open systems, with increasing prominence in black hole physics. We present here the first study of QNMs of optical potentials. We show that solitons can support QNMs, deriving a soliton perturbation equation and giving exact analytical expressions for the QNMs of fiber solitons. We discuss the boundary conditions in this intrinsically dispersive system and identify novel signatures of dispersion. From here, we discover a new analogy with black holes and describe a regime in which the soliton is a robust black hole simulator for light-ring phenomena. Our results invite a range of applications, from the description of optical pulse propagation with QNMs to the use of state-of-the-art technology from fiber optics to address questions in black hole physics, such as QNM spectral instabilities and the role of nonlinearities in ringdown. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.053802 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:We develop a quasi-normal mode theory (QNMT) to calculate a system's scattering S matrix, simultaneously satisfying both energy conservation and reciprocity even for a small truncated set of resonances. It is a practical reduced-order (few-parameter) model based on the resonant frequencies and constant mode-to-port coupling coefficients, easily computed from an eigensolver without the need for QNM normalization. Furthermore, we show how low- Q modes can be separated into an effective slowly varying background response C , giving an additional approximate formula for S , which is useful to describe general Fano-resonant phenomena. Abstract:Although optical resonators are widely used for controlling and engineering thermal radiation, what has been lacking is a general theoretical framework to elucidate the thermal emission of optical resonators, and guide the design and application of thermally driven optical resonators. We developed a general and self-consistent formalism to describe the thermal radiation from arbitrary optical resonators made by lossy and dispersive materials like metals, with the only assumption that the resonators have a single predominant resonance mode. Our formalism demonstrates that the thermal emission of an optical resonator is maximized when the mode losses to the emitter and the absorber (or far-field background) are matched, and meanwhile the predominant resonant modes are electrically quasi-static. By efficiently calculating the resonant modes using the finite element methods, our formalism serves as a general principle of designing the arbitrary optical resonator thermal emitters with perfect or maximized emission.

Abstract:Coupled optical cavities are an attractive on-chip optical platform for realizing quantum mechanical concepts in electrodynamics and further developing non-Hermitian photonics. In such systems, an intercavity interaction is often considered as a key parameter to understand the system's behaviors but its estimation/calculation is typically limited for some simplified systems owing to extended complexities. For example, multi-coupled photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavities exhibiting strong resonances with a large free spectral range can serve as an excellent test-bed to study non-Hermitian optical properties when spatially non-uniform gain is introduced. However, the detailed quantitative analysis such as spectral tracing of cavity normal modes is often limited in commercially available numerical tools because of the required massive computation resources. Herein, we report on a concept of spatial overlap integrals (SOIs) between the eigenmodes in non-coupled PhC nanocavities and utilize them to obtain the intercavity interactions in passively coupled PhC nanocavity systems. With the help of coupling strength factors calculated from SOIs, we were able to fully exploit the coupled mode theory (CMT) and readily trace the detailed spectral behaviors of normal modes in various multi-coupled PhC nanocavities. Full-wave numerical simulation results verified the proposed method, revealing that the characteristics of original eigenmodes from non-coupled PhC nanocavities can act as key building blocks for analyzing the normal modes of multi-coupled PhC nanocavities. We further applied this SOI method to various multi-coupled PhC nanocavities with non-symmetric optical gain/loss distributions and successfully observed the unusual spectral evolution of normal modes and the correspondingly occurring unique non-Hermitian behaviors.

Abstract:A fundamental feature of the quasi-normal modes (QNMs), which describe light interaction with open (leaky) systems like nanoparticles, lies in the question of the completeness of the QNMs representation and in the divergence of their field profile due to their leaky behavior and complex eigenfrequency. In this article, the QNMs expansion is obtained by taking into consideration the frequency dispersion and the causality principle. The derivation based on the complex analysis ensures the completeness of the QNMs expansion and prevents from any divergence of the field profile. The general derivation is tested in the case of a one-dimensional open resonator made of a homogeneous absorptive medium with frequency dispersion given by the Lorentz model. For a harmonic excitation, the result of the QNMs expansion perfectly matches the exact formula for the field distribution outside as well as inside the resonator.

Observation of supercavity modes in subwavelength dielectric resonators

Abstract:Electromagnetic response of dielectric resonators with high refractive index is governed by optically induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances facilitating confinement of light with the amplitude enhancement. However, strong subwavelength trapping of light was associated traditionally only with plasmonic or epsilon-near-zero structures which however suffer from losses. Recently, an alternative localization mechanism was proposed to trap light in individual subwavelength optical resonators with a high quality factor in the regime of a supercavity mode. Here, we present the experimental observation of the supercavity modes in subwavelength ceramic resonators in the radiofrequency range. We demonstrate experimentally that the regime of supercavity mode can be achieved via precise tuning of the resonator's dimensions resulting in a huge growth of the quality factor reaching the experimental values up to 1.25x10^4, being limited only by material losses in dielectrics. We reveal that the supercavity modes can be excited efficiently by both near- and far-fields by means of dipole sources and plane waves, respectively. In both the cases, the supercavity mode manifests itself clearly via characteristic peculiarities of the Fano resonance and radiation patterns. Our work paves the way for future compact practical devices in photonics and radiophysics.

Modeling Dispersive Coupling and Losses of Localized Optical and Mechanical Modes in Optomechanical Crystals

Abstract:Periodically structured materials can sustain both optical and mechanical excitations which are tailored by the geometry. Here we analyze the properties of dispersively coupled planar photonic and phononic crystals: optomechanical crystals. In particular, the properties of co-resonant optical and mechanical cavities in quasi-1D (patterned nanobeam) and quasi-2D (patterned membrane) geometries are studied. It is shown that the mechanical Q and optomechanical coupling in these structures can vary by many orders of magnitude with modest changes in geometry. An intuitive picture is developed based upon a perturbation theory for shifting material boundaries that allows the optomechanical properties to be designed and optimized. Several designs are presented with mechanical frequency ~ 1-10 GHz, optical Q-factor Qo > 10^7, motional masses meff 100 femtograms, optomechanical coupling length LOM < 5 microns, and a radiation-limited mechanical Q-factor Qm > 10^7.

Abstract:We theoretically analyse the hybrid Mie-exciton optical modes arising from the strong coupling of excitons in organic dyes or transition-metal dichalcogenides with the Mie resonances of high-index dielectric nanoparticles. Detailed analytic calculations show that silicon--exciton core--shell nanoparticles are characterised by a richness of optical modes which can be tuned through nanoparticle dimensions to produce large anticrossings in the visible or near infrared, comparable to those obtained in plexcitonics. The complex magnetic-excitonic nature of these modes is understood through spectral decomposition into Mie-coefficient contributions, complemented by electric and magnetic near-field profiles. In the frequency range of interest, absorptive losses in silicon are sufficiently low to allow observation of several periods of Rabi oscillations in strongly coupled emitter-particle architectures, as confirmed here by discontinuous Galerkin time-domain calculations for the electromagnetic field beat patterns. These results suggest that Mie resonances in high-index dielectrics are promising alternatives for plasmons in strong-coupling applications in nanophotonics, while the coupling of magnetic and electric modes opens intriguing possibilities for external control.

Abstract:High index dielectric nanostructure supports different types of resonant modes. However, it is very challenging to achieve high-Q factor in a single subwavelength dielectric nanoresonator due to non-hermtian property of the open system. Here, we present a universal approach of finding out a series of high-Q resonant modes in a single nonspherical dielectric nanocavity by exploring quasi-bound state in the continuum. Unlike conventional method relying on heavy computation (ie, frequency scanning by FDTD), our approach is built upon leaky mode engineering, through which many high-Q modes can be easily achieved by constructing avoid-crossing (or crossing) of the eigenvalue for pair leaky modes. The Q-factor can be up to 2.3*10^4 for square subwavelength nanowire (NW) (n=4), which is 64 times larger than the highest Q-factor (Q=360) reported so far in single subwavelength nanodisk. Such high-Q modes can be attributed to suppressed radiation in the corresponding eigenchannels and simultaneously quenched electric(magnetic) at momentum space. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate the emergence of the high-Q resonant modes (Q=380) in the scattering spectrum of a single silicon subwavelength nanowire.
