Abstract:Quaternions, discovered by Sir William Rowan Hamilton in the 19th century, are a significant extension of complex numbers and a profound tool for understanding three-dimensional rotations. This work explores the quaternion's history, algebraic structure, and educational implications. We begin with the historical context of quaternions, highlighting Hamilton's contributions and the development of quaternion theory. This sets the stage for a detailed examination of quaternion algebra, including their representations as complex numbers, matrices, and non-commutative nature. Our research presents some advancements compared to previous educational studies by thoroughly examining quaternion applications in rotations. We differentiate between left and right rotations through detailed numerical examples and propose a general approach to rotations via a theorem, clearly defining the associated morphism. This framework enhances the understanding of the algebraic structure of quaternions. A key innovation is presenting a three-dimensional example illustrating the rotation of a frame with strings, connecting quaternions to the quaternion group, half-integer spin phenomena, and Pauli matrices. This approach bridges theoretical concepts with practical applications, enriching the understanding of quaternions in scientific contexts. We emphasize the importance of incorporating the history and applications of quaternions into educational curricula to enhance student comprehension and interest. By integrating historical context and practical examples, we aim to make complex mathematical concepts more accessible and engaging for students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our study underscores the enduring relevance of quaternions in various scientific and technological fields and highlights the potential for future research and educational innovations.

I will address the issue of why a theory of triplets (the original goal of Hamilton) could not be developed. Finally, I will discuss briefly the history of various attempts to define holomorphic functions on quaternionic variables.

Abstract:Quaternions were appeared through Lagrangian formulation of mechanics in Symplectic vector space. Its general form was obtained from the Clifford algebra, and Frobenius' theorem, which says that "the only finite-dimensional real division algebra are the real field ${\bf R}$, the complex field ${\bf C}$ and the algebra ${\bf H}$ of quaternions" was derived. They appear also through Hamilton formulation of mechanics, as elements of rotation groups in the symplectic vector spaces. Quaternions were used in the solution of 4-dimensional Dirac equation in QED, and also in solutions of Yang-Mills equation in QCD as elements of noncommutative geometry. We present how quaternions are formulated in Clifford Algebra, how it is used in explaining rotation group in symplectic vector space and parallel transformation in holonomic dynamics. When a dynamical system has hysteresis, pre-symplectic manifolds and nonholonomic dynamics appear. Quaternions represent rotation of 3-dimensional sphere ${\bf S}^3$. Artin's generalized quaternions and Rohlin-Pontryagin's embedding of quaternions on 4-dimensional manifolds, and Kodaira's embedding of quaternions on ${\bf S}^1\times {\bf S}^3$ manifolds are also discussed.

Abstract:Before we dive into the accessibility stream of nowadays indicatory applications of octonions to computer and other sciences and to quantum physics let us focus for a while on the crucially relevant events for todays revival on interest to nonassociativity. Our reflections keep wandering back to the $Brahmagupta$ $Fibonacc$ two square identity and then via the $Euler$ four square identity up to the $Degen$ $Ggraves$ $Cayley$ eight square identity. These glimpses of history incline and invite us to retell the story on how about one month after quaternions have been carved on the $Broughamian$ bridge octonions were discovered by $John$ $Thomas$ $Ggraves$, jurist and mathematician, a friend of $William$ $Rowan$ $Hamilton$. As for today we just mention en passant quaternionic and octonionic quantum mechanics, generalization of $Cauchy$ $Riemann$ equations for octonions and triality principle and $G_2$ group in spinor language in a descriptive way in order not to daunt non specialists. Relation to finite geometries is recalled and the links to the 7stones of seven sphere, seven imaginary octonions units in out of the $Plato$ cave reality applications are appointed . This way we are welcomed back to primary ideas of $Heisenberg$, $Wheeler$ and other distinguished fathers of quantum mechanics and quantum gravity foundations.

Abstract:Rotations on the 3-dimensional Euclidean vector-space can be represented by real quaternions, as was shown by Hamilton. Introducing complex quaternions allows us to extend the result to elliptic and hyperbolic rotations on the Minkowski space, that is, to proper Lorentz rotations. Another generalization deals with complex rotations on the complex-quaternion algebra. Appropriate quaternionic expressions of differential operators lead to a quaternionic form of Maxwell equations; the quaternionic expressions of an electromagnetic-field in two Galilean frames in relative motion are linked by a complex rotation; some relativistic invariants of electromagnetic waves are deduced, including their polarization states and their degrees of polarization. Quaternionic forms of proper Lorentz rotations are applied to polarization optics along with illustrative examples. Equivalences between relativistic effects and crystal optics effects are mentioned. A derivation of the triangle inequality on the Minkowski space is given; the inequality is illustrated by some properties of partially polarized lightwaves.

On quaternionic complexes over unimodular quaternionic manifolds

Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:Penrose's two-spinor notation for 4-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds is extended to two-component notation for quaternionic manifolds, which is a useful tool for calculation. We can construct a family of quaternionic complexes over unimodular quaternionic manifolds only by elementary calculation. On complex quaternionic manifolds as complexification of quaternionic Kähler manifolds, the existence of these complexes was established by Baston by using twistor transformations and spectral sequences. Unimodular quaternionic manifolds constitute a large nice class of quaternionic manifolds: there exists a very special curvature decomposition; the conformal change of a unimodular quaternionic structure is still unimodular quaternionic; the complexes over such manifolds are conformally invariant. This class of manifolds is the real version of torsion-free QCFs introduced by Bailey and Eastwood. These complexes are elliptic. We also obtain a Weitzenböck formula to establish vanishing of the cohomology groups of these complexes for quaternionic Kähler manifolds with negative scalar curvatures.

Abstract:This work explores dual quaternions and their applications. First, a theoretical construction begins at dual numbers, extends to dual vectors, and culminates in dual quaternions. The physical foundations behind the developed theory lie in two important fundamentals: Chasles' Theorem and the Transference Principle. The former addresses how to represent rigid-body motion whereas the latter provides a method for operating on it. This combination presents dual quaternions as a framework for modeling rigid mechanical systems, both kinematically and kinetically, in a compact, elegant and performant way. Next, a review on the applications of dual quaternions is carried out, providing a general overview of all applications. Important subjects are further detailed, these being the kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies and mechanisms (both serial and parallel), control and motion interpolation. Discussions regarding dual quaternions and their applications are undertaken, highlighting open questions and research gaps. The advantages and disadvantages of using dual quaternions are summarized. Lastly, conclusions and future directions of research are presented.

Abstract:Over the past few years, the applications of dual-quaternions have not only developed in many different directions but has also evolved in exciting ways in several areas. As dual-quaternions offer an efficient and compact symbolic form with unique mathematical properties. While dual-quaternions are now common place in many aspects of research and implementation, such as, robotics and engineering through to computer graphics and animation, there are still a large number of avenues for exploration with huge potential benefits. This article is the first to provide a comprehensive review of the dual-quaternion landscape. In this survey, we present a review of dual-quaternion techniques and applications developed over the years while providing insights into current and future directions. The article starts with the definition of dual-quaternions, their mathematical formulation, while explaining key aspects of importance (e.g., compression and ambiguities). The literature review in this article is divided into categories to help manage and visualize the application of dual-quaternions for solving specific problems. A timeline illustrating key methods is presented, explaining how dual-quaternion approaches have progressed over the years. The most popular dual-quaternion methods are discussed with regard to their impact in the literature, performance, computational cost and their real-world results (compared to associated models). Finally, we indicate the limitations of dual-quaternion methodologies and propose future research directions.

In this paper, we define and study two new classes of split quaternions, namely balancing split quaternions and Lucas-balancing split quaternions. Moreover, well-known properties, e.g., Catalan, d'Ocagne, and Vajda identities, for these quaternions are also presented. We give matrix generators for balancing split quaternions and Lucas-balancing split quaternions, too.

Abstract:We give explicit bijective correspondences between three families of objects: certain pairs of quaternions, which we regard as spinors; certain flags in (1+4)-dimensional Minkowski space; and horospheres in 4-dimensional hyperbolic space decorated with certain pairs of spinorial directions. These correspondences generalise previous work of the first author, Penrose--Rindler, and Penner in lower dimensions, and use the description of 4-dimensional hyperbolic isometries via Clifford matrices studied by Ahlfors and others. We show that lambda lengths generalise to 4 dimensions, where they take quaternionic values, and are given by a certain bilinear form on quaternionic spinors. They satisfy a non-commutative Ptolemy equation, arising from quasi-Plücker relations in the Gel'fand--Retakh theory of noncommutative determinants. We also study various structures of geometric and topological interest that arise in the process.

Abstract:We apply the quaternionic Jordan form to classify the hypercomplex nilpotent almost abelian Lie algebras in all dimensions and to carry out the complete classification of 12-dimensional hypercomplex almost abelian Lie algebras. Moreover, we determine which 12-dimensional simply connected hypercomplex almost abelian Lie groups admit lattices. Finally, for each integer $n>1$ we construct infinitely many, up to diffeomorphism, $(4n+4)$-dimensional hypercomplex almost abelian solvmanifolds which are completely solvable. These solvmanifolds arise from a distinguished family of monic integer polynomials of degree $n$.

Abstract:This paper establishes the basis of the quaternionic differential geometry ($\mathbbm H$DG) initiated in a previous article. The usual concepts of curves and surfaces are generalized to quaternionic constraints, as well as the curvature and torsion concepts, differential forms, directional derivatives and the structural equations. The analogy between the quaternionic and the real geometries is obtained using a matrix representation of quaternions. The results evidences the quaternionic formalism as a suitable language to differential geometry that can be useful in various directions of future investigation.

Abstract:We study application of the Clifford algebra and the Grassmann algebra to image recognitions in $(3+1)D$ using quaternions. Following S.L.Adler, we construct a quaternion-valued wave function model with fermions and bosons of equal degrees of freedom, similar to Cartan's supersymmetric model. The Clifford algebra ${\mathcal A}_{3,1}$ is compared with ${\mathcal A}_{2,1}$ and the model applied to the $(2+1)D$ non-destructive testing is extended. The fixed point lattice actions are calculated for 7 paths in $(3+1)D$ space with lengths less than or equal to 8 lattice units. Comparison with the quaternion time approach of Ariel, quaternion Fourier transform of Hitzer and the tensor renormalization group approach to classical lattice models are also discussed.
