Abstract:There exist very twisting families of lines on Grassmannians and isotropic Grassmannians. This is a key step in proving existence of a rational section of a family of isotropic Grassmannians over a surface with vanishing Brauer obstruction.

Abstract:Further geometry and topology for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex Grassmannians Gn(CN) are studied. Some curvature pinching theorems for pseudo-holomorphic curves with constant Kahler angles in G(m)(C-N) are obtained, so that the corresponding results for pseudo-holomorphic curves in complex projective spaces are generalized.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.
On Varieties of Lines on Linear Sections of Grassmannians

Abstract:General linear sections of codimension 2 of the Grassmannians G(1,4) and G(1,5) appear in the classification of Fano manifolds of high index. Unlike Grassmannians, these manifolds are not homogeneous. Nevertheless, their automorphisms groups have finitely many orbits. In this work we first compute the orbits of these actions. Then we give a description of the variety of lines (under the Plücker embedding) passing through a fixed point in each orbit of the action. As an application we show that these Fano manifolds are not weakly 2-Fano, completing the classification of weakly 2-Fano manifolds of high index, initiated by Carolina Araujo and Ana-Maria Castravet.

On the Twistor Theory of Almost-Grassmannian Manifolds

Abstract:In this document we present a twistor correspondence for half-flat almost-Grassmannian structures on real and complex manifolds. We provide foundational results regarding local theory in the complex setting and a global correspondence when the underlying manifold is a real Grassmannian of 2-planes. Whereas twistor constructions typically involve moduli of closed curves in a complex manifold, we utilize and expand upon the more flexible approach pioneered by LeBrun and Mason using moduli of curves-with-boundary.

Abstract:We introduce and study the analytic relative Jacobian sheaf for a Lagrangian fibration of a hyperkähler manifold. When the fibration has irreducible fibers in codimension 1 and a relative principal polarization, we show that it is isomorphic to the relative Albanese sheaf which acts on the Lagrangian fibration. We apply this to OG10 Lagrangian fibrations associated to a smooth cubic fourfold constructed by Laza-Saccà-Voisin and Saccà. For sufficiently general cubic fourfolds, we compute the Tate-Shafarevich group parametrizing twists of the original Lagrangian fibration in terms of certain degree twists and Brauer twists. Among the main tools we use are perverse sheaves, decomposition theorem, Hodge modules and Deligne cohomology.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard variety of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. Specifically, we prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard variety come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety.

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0407496" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0407496">math.AG/0407496</a>, a new construction of limit linear series is presented which functorializes and compactifies the original construction of Eisenbud and Harris, using a new space called the linked Grassmannian. The boundary of the compactification consists of crude limit series, and maps with positive-dimensional fibers to crude limit series of Eisenbud and Harris. In this paper, we carry out a careful analysis of the linked Grassmannian to obtain an upper bound on the dimension of the fibers of the map on crude limit series, thereby concluding an upper bound on the dimension of the locus of crude limit series, and obtaining a simple proof of the Brill-Noether theorem using only the limit linear series machinery. We also see that on a general reducible curve, even crude limit series may be smoothed to nearby fibers.

Abstract:Tractors and Twistors bundles both provide natural conformally covariant calculi on $4D$-Riemannian manifolds. They have different origins but are closely related, and usually constructed bottom-up from prolongation of defining differential equations. We propose alternative top-down gauge theoretic constructions starting from the conformal Cartan bundle and its vectorial and spinorial associated bundles. Our key ingredient is the dressing field method of gauge symmetry reduction, which allows to exhibit tractors and twistors and their associated connections as gauge field of a non-standard kind as far as Weyl rescaling symmetry is concerned. By which we mean that they implement the gauge principle but are of a different geometric nature than the well known differential geometric objects usually underlying gauge theories. We provide the corresponding BRST treatment. The present paper deals with the case of tractors while a companion paper deals with twistors.

Ranks of abelian varieties in cyclotomic twist families

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $F$, and suppose that $\mathbb Z[\zeta_n]$ embeds in $\mathrm{End}_{\bar F} A$, for some root of unity $\zeta_n$ of order $n = 3^m$. Assuming that the Galois action on the finite group $A[1-\zeta_n]$ is sufficiently reducible, we bound the average rank of the Mordell--Weil groups $A_d(F)$, as $A_d$ varies through the family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists of $A$. Combining this with the recently proved uniform Mordell--Lang conjecture, we prove near-uniform bounds for the number of rational points in twist families of bicyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x^2)$, as well as in twist families of theta divisors of cyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x)$. Our main technical result is the determination of the average size of a $3$-isogeny Selmer group in a family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists.

Secant varieties of generalised Grassmannians

Abstract:The secant varieties to flag varieties $G/P$ are central objects in Tensor Decomposition. The natural group action they inherit allows one to reduce the study of local geometric properties to $G$--orbit representatives. The case of secant varieties of lines is particularly elegant as their $G$--orbits are induced by $P$--orbits in both $G/P$ and $\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{p}$. Parabolic orbits are a classical problem in Representation Theory, well understood for generalised Grassmannians. Exploiting such orbits, we provide a complete and uniform description of both the identifiable and singular loci of the secant variety of lines to any cominuscule variety, as well as of the second Terracini locus. We also show that non-cominuscule varieties behave differently.

Abstract:The Grassmannian admits an action by a finite cyclic group via the cyclic shift map. We give a simple description of the points fixed by each element of this cyclic group, extending Karp's description of the points fixed by the cyclic shift itself. We give a cell decomposition of the set of totally nonnegative points in each cyclic symmetry locus and describe efficient total positivity tests, extending results of Postnikov to the cyclically symmetric setting. We describe a conjectural generalized cluster structure on cyclic symmetry loci provided the order of the orbifold point is sufficiently large. The generalized exchange relations we find should be a Higher Teichm\"uller analogue of the relations Chekhov and Shapiro used to study Teichm\"uller theory of orbifolds.

Abstract:The real Grassmannian is both a projective variety (via Plücker coordinates) and an affine variety (via orthogonal projections). We connect these two representations, and we develop the commutative algebra of the latter variety. We introduce the squared Grassmannian, and we study applications to determinantal point processes in statistics.

Abstract:In their solution to the orchard-planting problem, Green and Tao established a structure theorem which proves that in a line arrangement in the real projective plane with few double points, most lines are tangent to the dual curve of a cubic curve. We provide geometric arguments to prove that in the case of a simplicial arrangement, the aforementioned cubic curve cannot be irreducible. It follows that Grünbaum's conjectural asymptotic classification of simplicial arrangements holds under the additional hypothesis of a linear bound on the number of double points.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to clarify the connection between certain structures from the theory of totally nonnegative Grassmannians, quiver Grassmannians for cyclic quivers and the theory of local models of Shimura varieties. More precisely, we generalize the construction from our previous paper relating the combinatorics and geometry of quiver Grassmannians to that of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The varieties we are interested in serve as realizations of local models of Shimura varieties. We exploit quiver representation techniques to study the quiver Grassmannians of interest and, in particular, to describe explicitly embeddings into affine flag varieties which allow us to realize our quiver Grassmannians as a union of Schubert varieties therein.

Abstract:For an abelian variety A over a number field F, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of A is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3-isogeny on A factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over F. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety A of dimension greater than 1. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension 1, we deduce that if E/F is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded. If F is totally real, we moreover show that a positive proportion of twists have rank 0 and a positive proportion have 3-Selmer rank 1. These results on bounded average ranks in families of quadratic twists represent new progress toward Goldfeld’s conjecture—which states that the average rank in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over Q should be 1/2—and the first progress toward the analogous conjecture over number fields other than Q. Our results follow from a computation of the average size of the ϕ-Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of an abelian variety admitting a 3-isogeny ϕ.

Flow lines on the moduli space of rank $2$ twisted Higgs bundles

Abstract:This paper studies the gradient flow lines for the $L^2$ norm square of the Higgs field defined on the moduli space of semistable rank $2$ Higgs bundles twisted by a line bundle of positive degree over a compact Riemann surface $X$. The main result is that these spaces of flow lines have an algebro-geometric classification in terms of secant varieties for different embeddings of $X$ into the projectivisation of the negative eigenspace of the Hessian at a critical point. The compactification of spaces of flow lines given by adding broken flow lines then has a natural interpretation via a projection to Bertram's resolution of secant varieties.

Abstract:Given integers $n \geq k \geq d$, let $X_{n,k,d}$ be the moduli space of $n$-tuples of lines $(\ell_1, \dots, \ell_n)$ in $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $\ell_1 + \cdots + \ell_n$ has dimension $d$. We give a quotient presentation of the torus-equivariant cohomology of $X_{n,k,d}$. The form of this presentation, and in particular the torus parameters appearing therein, will arise from the orbit harmonics method of combinatorial deformation theory.

Torsion and twists of abelian varieties

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:In projective space over fields of characteristic different from 2, the normal bundle of a general nondegenerate rational curve is balanced. The corresponding statement for rational curves in other Grassmannians can fail. Nevertheless, we prove that the normal bundle of a general rational curve in a Grassmannian decomposes into a direct sum of line bundles whose degrees are at most 2 apart.
