Abstract:Developing flexible, stretchable, and self-healing wearable electronic devices with skin-like capabilities is highly desirable for healthcare and human-machine interaction. Hydrogels as a promising sensing material with crosslinked polymer networks have received widespread attention for decades. However, sensors based on hydrogels suffer from low sensitivity and stability due to their poor electrical conductivity or the movement of nanofillers in hydrogel networks. Herein, a stable, sensitive, and self-healing strain sensor is fabricated by the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel (T-hydrogel). The introduction of MXene increases the number of H-bonds in the PVA hydrogel network and enhances the conductivity, resulting in high sensitivity, stability, and self-healing character. The self-healing T-hydrogel-based strain sensor has a performance close to that of the original sensor. In addition, the device is capable of detecting bodily motions, indicating the potential application in the field of human health monitoring and human-computer interaction.

Abstract:The flourishing development in flexible electronics has provoked intensive research in flexible strain sensors to realize accurate perception acquisition under different external stimuli. However, building hydrogel-based strain sensors with high stretchability and sensitivity remains a great challenge. Herein, MXene nanosheets were composited into polyacrylamide-sodium alginate matrix to construct mechanical robust and sensitive double networked hydrogel strain sensor. The hydrophilic MXene nanosheets formed strong interactions with the polymer matrix and endowed the hydrogel with excellent tensile properties (3150%), compliant mechanical strength (2.03 kPa-1 in Young's Module) and long-lasting stability and fatigue resistance (1,000 dynamic cycles under 1,600% strain). Due to the highly oriented MXene-based three dimensional conductive networks, the hydrogel sensor achieved extremely high tensile sensitivity (18.15 in gauge factor) and compression sensitivity (0.38 kPa-1 below 3 kPa). MXene hydrogel-based strain sensors also displayed negligible hysteresis in electromechanical performance, typical frequent-independent feature and rapid response time to external stimuli. Moreover, the sensor exhibited accurate response to different scales of human movements, providing potential application in speech recognition, expression recognition and handwriting verification.

Abstract:The development of high-performance hydrogels with superior strength, stretchability, and conductivity is critical to the practical application of flexible sensors. In this study, we employed a strategy that involves introducing physical cross-linking points, creating a double network, and adding nanofillers. By utilizing a two-step method that involves thermal cross-linking and post-immersion cross-linking, and using two common metal ions to crosslink different polymer networks, we successfully developed a conductive composite dual-network hydrogel. In addition, the incorporation of modified MXene has significantly improved the strength and toughness of the hydrogel. The resulting hydrogel exhibits impressive mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 2.64 MPa and elongation at break of 689%, as well as high toughness of 10.25 MJ·m−3 and conductivity of 1.89 S/m. When applied as a flexible sensor in electronic skin, the sensor demonstrates a wide operating range (>300%), high sensitivity (GF = 4.64), and excellent linear detection ability (R2 = 0.99).

Abstract:Journal of Biomaterials Applications, Ahead of Print. The rapid development of flexible electronic technology has led to the in-depth study of flexible wearable sensors to achieve accurate sensing under different external stimuli. However, it is still a huge challenge to develop hydrogel-based wearable skin-like sensors with super ductility, high sensitivity, and self-healing properties. Herein, the Ti3C2 type of MXene was synthesized, and the Ag/MXene nanocomplexes were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol-borax matrix to construct a novel composite hydrogel as the multifunctional nanofillers, which could bring both improved properties and novel functionalities. The Ag/MXene-Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel displayed integrated merits of highly strain sensitive (GF = 3.26), self-healing (within 10 min, 91% healing efficiency), and excellent antibacterial activity. The hydrogel could be assembled into a wearable skin-like sensor to monitor human movement, including large deformations (finger, elbow, wrist, and knee bending) and tiny deformations (mouth's movement and throat vocalization) in real time. Therefore, this work shed a new light on the development of flexible wearable skin-like sensors for the personalized healthcare monitoring, human–machine interfaces, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Electronic skin is driving the next generation of cutting-edge wearable electronic products due to its good wearability and high accuracy of information acquisition. However, it remains a challenge to fulfill the requirements on detecting full-range human activities with existing flexible strain sensors. Herein, highly stretchable, sensitive, and multifunctional flexible strain sensors based on MXene- (Ti 3 C 2 T x -) composited poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone double-network hydrogels were prepared. The uniformly distributed hydrophilic MXene nanosheets formed a three-dimensional conductive network throughout the hydrogel, endowing the flexible sensor with high sensitivity. The strong interaction between the double-network hydrogel matrix and MXene greatly improved the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The resulting nanocomposited hydrogels featured great tensile performance (2400%), toughness, and resilience. Particularly, the as-prepared flexible pressure sensor revealed ultrahigh sensitivity (10.75 kPa -1 ) with a wide response range (0-61.5 kPa), fast response (33.5 ms), and low limit of detection (0.87 Pa). Moreover, the hydrogel-based flexible sensors, with high sensitivity and durability, could be employed to monitor full-range human motions and assembled into some aligned devices for subtle pressure detection, providing enormous potential in facial expression and phonation recognition, handwriting verification, healthy diagnosis, and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels based on two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, MXene, have emerged as promising materials for flexible wearable sensors. In these applications, the integration of high toughness, ultrastretchability, low hysteresis, self-adhesiveness, and multiple sensory functions into one gel is essential. However, serious issues, such as easy restacking and inevitable oxidation of MXene nanosheets in aqueous media and weak interfacial bindings between MXene and the gel network, make it almost impossible to achieve the multiple performances mentioned above. Here we present a conductive MXene-composited polymer (MCP) hydrogel by incorporating gelatin-modified MXene into polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel for the fabrication of multifunctional sensors. The presence of gelatin not only greatly improves the stability of the MXene nanosheets by forming a protective sheath, but also largely enhances the interfacial interactions between the MXene and the hydrogel network as molecular glues. Thus, the MCP hydrogel exhibits a high strength (430 kPa), remarkable stretchability (1100%), low hysteresis (<10% at 500% cyclic tensile), and excellent repeatable adhesion. The resultant MCP hydrogel-based versatile sensors display a high strain sensitivity with a broad working range (gauge factor (GF) = 8.83, up to 1000%), realizing the detection of various human motions. Moreover, the prepared sensors possess superior thermosensitive capacities (1.110/°C) for the measurement of body temperature. This strategy opens horizons to designing high-performance MXene-based hydrogels for advanced sensing platforms.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based wearable sensors have received great attention owing to their potential applications in human health detection and identification of wearable devices. However, it is still a great challenge to integrate all the key functions (such as high stretchability, self-adhesive properties, excellent anti-freezing properties, and high conductivity) into a single hydrogel. In this study, MXene@cellulose nanofibers (MXene@CNFs) were added to polyacrylamide/gelatin (PG) dual-network hydrogels. Afterward, the hydrogels were immersed in different solutions for further crosslinking to explore the effect of different solutions and different immersion times on the degree of crosslinking. Finally, the PG/MXene@CNF/CaCl 2 composite hydrogel sensor exhibited an excellent stretchability of >1600%, a high strain sensitivity of 19.95 over a wide strain range, strong adhesion (17.4 kPa), excellent anti-freeze resistance, a fast response time of 150 ms, and high electromagnetic shielding capability. The hydrogel-based wearable sensor could accurately monitor various body movements, vocal cord articulation, letter recognition, heat source location, and human–computer interaction and had a wide range of applications for developing wearable electronic devices, intelligent soft robots, electronic skins, and human–computer interfaces.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely studied in many fields, such as wearable electronic materials, soft robotics, and human medical monitoring due to their good water retention, elasticity, softness, flexibility, and sensory properties. However, it is still a great challenge to make all-in-one hydrogels with good mechanical properties, rapid self-healing ability, self-adhesion, and sensitive sensing abilities like natural skin. Thus, a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/acrylic acid/acrylamide/tea polyphenol and Al3+ (HPMC/AA/AM/TP/Al3+) was prepared by a simple method. Owing to the multiple dynamic noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and metal coordination in the ionic conductive hydrogel network, the hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties (breaking stress: 0.032 MPa, toughness: 0.689 MJ/m3), skin-like elastic modulus (0.065 kPa), and stretchability (2225%). The electric conductivity could rapidly self-heal in a dramatically short period of time (5.1s). The stress and strain self-healing efficiencies reached 93.8% and 99.4% in 60 min, respectively. Its adhesion strengths on wood and pigskin were as high as 13.12 kPa and 9.98 kPa due to the phenolic hydroxyl groups in TP. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits good conductivity (3.03 Sm-1). Hence, the hydrogel was assembled as a human motion sensor and a high sensitivity (GF: 5.13) was obtained over the strain range of 200-1000% with a fast response/recovery time (response time: 0.4s, recovery time: 0.75s). Furthermore, the hydrogel sensor can also monitor various human movements, including joint movement and vocal cord vibration. The as-prepared hydrogel achieved multiple functions in a single hydrogel system (all-in-one) and has great potential for application in flexible wearable sensors.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising material candidates for epidermal sensors due to their similarity to biological tissues, good wearability, and high accuracy of information acquisition. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve conductive hydrogel-based epidermal sensors with reliable healability for long-term usage, robust mechanical property, environmental degradability for decreased electronic waste, and sensing capability of the physiological stimuli and the electrophysiological signals. Herein, we propose the synthesis strategy of a multifunctional epidermal sensor based on the highly stretchable, self-healing, degradable, and biocompatible nanocomposite hydrogel, which is fabricated from the conformal coating of a MXene (Ti3C2Tx) network by the hydrogel polymer networks involving poly(acrylic acid) and amorphous calcium carbonate. The epidermal sensor can be employed to sensitively detect human motions with the fast response time (20 ms) and to serve as electronic skins for wirelessly monitoring the electrophysiological signals (such as the electromyogram and electrocardiogram signals). Meanwhile, the multifunctional epidermal sensor could be degraded in phosphate buffered saline solution, which could not cause any pollution to the environment. Abstract:MXene-based conductive hydrogels have emerged as a new type of soft materials in flexible electronics. Herein, metal coordination is introduced into MXene-based conductive hydrogels to synchronously enhance the mechanical and self-healing properties. MXene-based conductive hydrogels are made up of polyacrylic acid (PAA), sium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC), Ti 3 C 2 T X and metal ions (Ni 2+ , Al 3+ or Sn 4+ ). PAA/SCMC/Ti 3 C 2 T X /Sn 4+ hydrogel is found to have excellent mechanical (stress: 122 kPa; strain: 1688 %; toughness: 0.95 ± 0.12 MJ m −3 ) and self-healing (self-healing efficiency: 99.27 % (conductivity); 81.16 % (stress); and 83.13 % (strain)) properties due to the metal coordination and H-bonding. The hydrogel has also good conductivity of 0.82 S m −1 and adhesion of 38.94 kPa. The flexible sensors based on this hydrogel can efficiently detect human motions, electromyography (EMG), electrocardiography (ECG) and handwriting signals. Furthermore, a supercapacitor assembled from this hydrogel has a high specific capacitance of 118.66 F g −1 and good stability (15000 charge-discharge cycles). This work provides an effective strategy for exploiting mechanically tough and self-healing MXene-based conductive hydrogels with prospective applications in flexible electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based functional materials had attracted great attention in the fields of artificial intelligence, soft robotics, and motion monitoring. However, the gelation of hydrogels induced by free radical polymerization typically required heating, light exposure, and other conditions, limiting their practical applications and development in real-life scenarios. In this study, a simple and direct method was proposed to achieve rapid gelation at room temperature by incorporating reductive MXene sheets in conjunction with metal ions into the chitosan network and inducing the formation of a polyacrylamide network in an extremely short time (10 s). This resulted in a dual-network MXene-crosslinked conductive hydrogel composite that exhibited exceptional stretchability (1350 %), remarkably low dissipated energy (0.40 kJ m −3 at 100 % strain), high sensitivity (GF = 2.86 at 300–500 % strain), and strong adhesion to various substrate surfaces. The study demonstrated potential applications in the reliable detection of various motions, including repetitive fine movements and large-scale human body motions. This work provided a feasible platform for developing integrated wearable health-monitoring electronic systems.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels integrate the conductive performance and soft nature, which is like that of human skin. Thus, they are more suitable for the preparation of wearable human-motion sensors. Nevertheless, the integration of outstanding multiple functionalities, such as stretchability, toughness, biocompatibility, self-healing, adhesion, strain sensitivity, and durability, by a simple way is still a huge challenge. Herein, we have developed a multifunctional chitosan/oxidized hyaluronic acid/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/poly(acrylic acid)/tannic acid/Al3+ hydrogel (CS/OHA/HPMC/PAA/TA/Al3+) by using a two-step method with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), acrylic acid (AA), tannic acid (TA), chitosan (CS), oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA), and aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl3·6H2O). Due to the synergistic effect of dynamic imine bonds between CS and OHA, dynamic metal coordination bonds between Al3+ and -COOH and/or TA as well as reversible hydrogen, the hydrogel showed excellent tensile property (elongation at break of 3168%) and desirable toughness (0.79 MJ/m3). The mechanical self-healing efficiency can reach 95.5% at 30 min, and the conductivity can recover in 5.2 s at room temperature without stimulation. The favorable attribute of high transparency (98.5% transmittance) facilitates the transmission of the optical signal and enables visualization of the sensor. It also shows good adhesiveness to various materials and is easy to peel off without residue. The resistance of the hydrogel-based sensors shows good electrical conductivity (2.33 S m-1), good durability, high sensing sensitivity (GF value of 4.12 under 1600% strain), low detection limit (less than 1%), and short response/recovery time (0.54/0.31 s). It adhered to human skin and monitored human movements such as the bending movements of joints, swallowing, and speaking successfully. Therefore, the obtained multifunctional conductive hydrogel has great potential applications in wearable strain sensors.

Abstract:This work develops a dynamic boronic-ester-bond-based hydrogel system for self-healing and simultaneously achieves MXene’s antioxidant protection with polyanionic salt of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). By cross-linking poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) to obtain a polymer backbone, and using CMC and borate modified MXene (MCB) as nanometer fillers, the as-prepared PPMCB hydrogel can heal automatically in 6 h. Owing to the edge-wrapping of MXene with CMC, the disadvantage of easy oxidation of MXene is circumvented. Such excellent antioxidant properties can ensure that the hydrogel maintains more than 90% of its mechanical properties and sensing capabilities after 45 days of oxidation treatment. Moreover, the hydrogel shows strong adhesion to different materials. Based on these unique characteristics of PPMCB, flexible sensors with self-healing and long-term durability are assembled. This study provides a new strategy for preparing self-healing conductive MXene-filled hydrogels that can be applied to flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:Flexible sensors are attracting tremendous interest in electronic skins and human detection. It is highly desirable yet challenging to incorporate self-healing, high sensitivity, and large stretchability into strain sensors due to their internal contradiction and complex manufacturing process. Herein, we fabricate such a sensor with a unique multiscale conductive layer structure by simply spraying conductive substances to the elastomer with dynamic Diels-Alder (DA) bonds. The multiscale structure consists of 1D semi-embedded silver nanowire (AgNW) and 2D transition metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) nanosheets. Meanwhile, the AgNW does not merely provide stable conductivity as well as a robust interface bonding with the substrate under considerable strain. While MXene is tightly coated on the AgNW skeleton, the intrinsic brittleness of MXene supports a significant resistance variation when stretching. The obtained sensor can simultaneously achieve highly sensitive, a wide sensitivity range (0.5%∼ 96%), excellent durability, fast response (71 ± 4.9 ms), and relaxation (138 ± 5.8 ms). Interestingly, it can also detect pressure over a wide range (183–2260 kPa) and even withstand human walking and hand touching. Moreover, benefiting from the dynamic and designability crosslink network, the mechanical and electrical properties can be restored. This excellent sensor provides an approach for next-generation wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible hydrogel sensors have attracted significant attention due to their broad applications in soft robots, healthcare monitoring, and electronic skins. However, the development of super-tough hydrogel-based sensors that combine self-healing, self-adhesiveness, and drift-free sensing while maintaining long-lasting stability is a critical challenge. This work presents a multifunctional hydrogel (P/M-Ag/S) composed of Ti3C2Tx MXene-Ag nanoparticles (MXene-Ag), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax and sucrose. Compared to MXene hydrogel and MXene-Ag hydrogel, P/M-Ag/S showed excellent self-adhesion (repeatable adhesion) and rapid self-healing ability (>94%) due to increased hydrogen bond density. Additionally, the P/M-Ag/S hydrogel exhibited outstanding mechanical properties include the largest tensile strength, toughness, Young's modulus, resilience, anti-fatigue properties, and little energy dissipation. Both MXene-Ag and sucrose endow hydrogel antibacterial ability with great potential in flexible sensor even when in contact with human skin. The hydrogel strain/pressure sensor shows a high sensitivity, fast response (<28.8 ms), ultra-durability (6000 cycles), and rapid self-healing ability. It is successfully applied for real-time human motion detection, writing encryption, and human-computer information output for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. This work demonstrates that flexible, self-healing, super-stable conductive hydrogel has broad application prospects as sensors in the field of national defense information encryption transmission and for portable healthcare.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for the construction of skin-like mechanical sensors. The common design of hydrogel-based artificial skin requires a dielectric sandwiched between two hydrogel layers for capacitive sensing. However, such a planar configuration limits the sensitivity, stretchability and self-healing properties. Here, we report the design of single-layer composite hydrogels with bulk capacitive junctions as mechanical sensors. We engineer dielectric peptide-coated graphene (PCG) to serve as homogenously dispersed electric double layers in hydrogels. Any mechanical motions that alter the microscopic distributions of PCG in the hydrogels can significantly change the overall capacitance. We use peptide self-assembly to render strong yet dynamic interfacial interactions between the hydrogel network and graphene. The resulting hydrogels can be stretched up to 77 times their original length and self-heal in a few minutes. The devices can effectively sense strain and pressure in both air and aqueous environments, providing tremendous opportunities for next-generation iontronics.

Abstract:Maintaining low modulus while endowing the wide-range linear stretchability to wearable or implantable devices is crucial for these devices to reduce the mechanical mismatch between the devices and human skin/tissue interfaces. However, improving linear stretchability often results in an increased modulus of stretchable electronic materials, which hinders their conformability in long-term quantifiable monitoring of organs. Herein, we develop a hybrid structure involving interlocking low-modulus porous elastomers (Ecoflex-0030) and MXene-based hydrogels with crosslinking networks of polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, and MXene. This hydrogel–elastomer structure exhibits superior performance compared with previous reports, with a wide linear stretchability strain range from 0 to 1000% and maintaining a low modulus of 6.4 kPa. Moreover, the hydrogel–elastomer hybrids can be utilized as highly sensitive strain sensors with remarkable characteristics, including high sensitivity (gauge factor ∼3.52), a linear correlation between the resistance and strain (0–200%), rapid response (0.18 s) and recovery times (0.21 s), and excellent electrical reproducibility (1000 loading–unloading cycles). Those electrical and mechanical properties allow the sensor to act as a suitable quantifiable equipment in organ monitoring, human activities detecting, and human–machine interactions.

Abstract:Conductive gels have received extensive attention in flexible electronics due to their diverse characteristics. The requirement for versatility and incompatibility of the conductive fillers with the hydrogel matrix remain a challenge for hydrogels. Herein, the cellulose nanofiber stabilized liquid metal droplets are utilized to initiate the polymerization and simultaneously serve as solid conductive fillers to construct the polyacrylamide/MXene/glycerol hydrogel with eligible stretchability (1000%) and high environmental adaptability (-25-80 °C) for multifunctional sensing. The hydrogel is utilized as a flexible electrode to construct the triboelectric nanogenerator for mechanical energy harvesting and conversion as well as self-powered sensing. Importantly, as a versatile sensor, it combines temperature sensing and deformation sensing with a wide range of stimulus responses and exceptional sensing performance. The flexible temperature and strain sensors are realized with superior thermosensitivity and strain sensitivity. In addition, the hydrogel exhibits favorable photothermal antibacterial ability. This work opens new avenues for the preparation of photothermal, conductive, stress and thermal sensitive hydrogels for multimodal sensors, sketching a promising future for them in flexible and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely studied for the potential application as wearable sensors due to their flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, conductivity, self-healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel with self-adhesion, self-healing, conductivity, and mechanical properties was fabricated by ion cross-linking chitosan (CS), acrylic acid (AA) polymer, and tea polyphenols (TP) in the presence of graphitized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in this work. The resultant hydrogel has a unique self-healing property (94.11% for strain self-healing and 90.60% for stress self-healing) and mechanical properties. The fracture stress was 0.075 MPa with the strain was 1184%, and the toughness reaches 0.48 MJ/m3. The synergistic effect of free ions and CNTs endows the hydrogel excellent electrical conductivity (6.67 S·m-1). Moreover, the hydrogel can adhere to various organic and inorganic materials. It exhibits repeatable self-adhesion to human skin and can be peeled off completely without any residual, irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, the hydrogel also has good strain sensitivity and stable output signals in motion monitoring of human body as biosensor. Therefore, this work provides a new prospect for the design of multifunctional hydrogels for potential applications in wearable biosensors.
