Abstract:Abstract: This article takes up the question of how material objects convey meanings across time by examining James’s responses to several Civil War monuments and memorials in The American Scene. Drawing on Edward S. Casey’s analysis of commemoration as a set of practices of public remembering and Paul Ricoeur’s schema of the cycle of mimesis—prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration—as frames within which to understand both the experience of encounters with objects having historical value and the rendering of that experience in writing, Haviland shows how the meanings of those objects travel across time via transformative individual and collective engagements.

Abstract:As an atrocity heritage site, the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site is a liminal place partitioned from the everyday by its “sacredness through desecration” (Sion) and by the “gaze-intent” of the dark heritage visitor (Urry and Larsen). The meanings and interpretations of Sand Creek site are multifaceted, contested, and ever changing and the massacre remains extremely emotionally charged. For the descendants of the tribes involved, the contested site has always been sacred and an intrinsic part of tribal identity and culture. This case study evaluates the interpretive methodologies at the site and interrogates the relative importance of interpretation and memorialization within this atrocity heritage space. Further, Spencer seeks to assess critically the notion of interpretation (as commodified by NPS— National Park Service) and its ability to facilitate individual meaning-making and construct subjective narrations within the visit.

This study examines how traditional memorials and counter-memorials shape geopolitical storytelling and public sentiment. Through text analysis of over 158,000 online reviews, we compare emotional responses elicited by these memorial types. Our findings reveal distinct differences in reactions, with traditional memorials evoking pride and heroism, while counter-memorials prompt reflection on loss and historical trauma. These results contribute to understanding how memorials influence political perceptions and collective memory, offering insights into the psychological mechanisms behind geopolitical engagement with historical events.

Abstract:War memorials are a significant feature of the Australian landscape. Thousands were erected after the First World War in towns and suburbs across the nation as a community focus for memory, grief, and pride of their soldiers lost in the war. The Victoria Park memorial in Perth, Western Australia, originally constructed in 1917, before the war ended, and replaced in 1957, was a small suburban memorial that was born in the enthusiasm of Empire and the growing concept of Anzac. The biography of this memorial reveals a chequered and contested history typical of many local memorials in Western Australia. Concentrating on the Victoria Park memorial this article seeks to explore the relationships between its physical aspects and setting, its meaning to the community and the linkages between objects and memory.

Abstract:Memorials are cultural artifacts constructed to mediate memory for a shared past. But as such, they require people’s active engagement with them, which can generate divergent experiences and interpretations. The present study compares how different memorial forms both enable and constrain people’s relating to the sites and what they are meant to represent. The comparison hinges on the difference between traditional memorials (imposing, vertical, and focused on heroes) and counter-memorials (engaging, horizontal, and focused on victims). The Valley of the Fallen is in central focus as a prime example of a traditional memory, which is currently in the process of being re-signified. Our study compares participants’ experience of this site with the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the National 9/11 Memorial (both celebrated counter-memorials), using an innovative method combining interviews and a subjective camera that captures participants’ ongoing experience from the first-person perspective. Results show a manifold of ways in which people appropriate and make sense of memorials through different associations and personal memories while moving through them.

Abstract:Pierre Berton writes that “Canada, more than most countries, is a nation of ... memorials”. Yet, with the passage of time, war memorials inevitably tend to lose their original significance, becoming altogether ‘invisible’ for historically-estranged generations. Hence the need for re-remembering war memorials and monuments for the purposes of consolidating a (national) collective memory. The aim of this paper is a comparative analysis of Fields of Sacrifice (1963, dir. Donald Brittain), Herbert Fairlie Wood’s and John Swettenham’s Silent Witnesses (1974), Robert Shipley’s To Mark Our Place (1987), and Robert Konduras’s and Richard Parrish’s World War I: A Monumental History (2014) within the context of the theoretical distinction between memorial and monument cultures in order to discuss the defining ideological tropes of ‘Canadianness’.

Abstract:The centennial anniversary of the end of World War I brought leaders of tens of countries together in Paris. Despite the unity with which the commemorations were carried out, war memorials in different states have often accomplished various goals. This paper will focus on how WWI memorials have aided in the building of national collective memories in Britain, France, and Germany, and will assess their role in the creation and replication of national identities. Memorials evoking 'modes of collectivity' as well as 'atmospheres of remembrance' will be discussed to show the prevalence of commemorations in the victorious states.

Abstract:Journal of Material Culture, Ahead of Print. Memorials and monuments often shape the narratives of public memory surrounding key events and figures, even as they help process and represent the trauma and remembered emotions that those subjects evoke. This essay develops a schema of four types of memorial ambiguity in order to provide more precise analytic tools for understanding memorials. Ambiguous physical representation, ambiguous messages, ambiguous emotions, and ambiguous political responses interrelate as parts of the rhetorical interpretation of memorials. Examples draw from national memorials such as the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, DC, and the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawai'i as well as regional examples like Oklahoma's Yellow Ribbon Memorial commemorating a 1986 postal mass shooting and The Guardian atop Oklahoma's state capitol. This typology matters to memorial scholars and memorial designers alike: those who seek to theorize memorials ought to have a more developed sense of the rhetorical nature of ambiguity, and those who seek to construct memorials ought to consider the possibly ambiguous effects of their design. Failure to understand memorial ambiguity can lead to forgotten or ineffective memorials.

Abstract:The events of the russian-Ukrainian war, especially the last year and a half of its active phase, show how death and dying strongly fixed in space and place. The ability of spaces and places associated with death (cemeteries) and dying (places of death – spontaneous memorials) to evoke the deepest memories and intense emotions are a testament to the power of place and a reminder that the power of symbolic space is in emotion, not function. One of the expressions of collective grieving is memorial sites, whose choice has a deep symbolic meaning. Through careful anthropological analysis of burial sites and memorial sites, the intense emotional experiences associated with death, including grief, bereavement, and reminiscence, can be understood. Funeral and memorial practices are mediated by several spaces – the body (corporeal), the place of death/dying, the morgue, the cemetery, the crematorium, the memorial of memory, the virtual space of the cyber world – the networked martyrologists. The conflict arising from the ongoing performance and recording of memory in public space is reflected in debates about expressions and markers of private grief in public spaces and related disputes about what constitutes a ‹sacred› place. The tragedies of civilian deaths during shelling are part of what are becoming new ritual forms and memorials, constructing a permanent memory of the dead in the material landscape of lived space. The tradition of designing memorials during the russian-Ukrainian war creates a «register of sacred history» – a set of shared historical experiences and views that define and unite the community. Processes of memorialization after a tragic death, which are increasingly taking place in public, are becoming medialized and are used by the state as a political tool. The nature of the memorial landscape creates a specific style of communication, in which the entire society is engaged in spatial dialogue.

Abstract:The undertaken thorough historical and literary analysis of A. S. Pushkin’s poem “When lost in thought I wander beyond the town...” (“Kogda za gorodom zadumchiv ia brozhu...”, 1836) reveals its pretexts and likely sources among which the most important ones are G. G. Byron’s epigram “On Lord Elgin”, the 5th, 8th and 11th letters of A. Pichot’s “Voyage historique et littéraire en Angleterre et en Ecosse” and the 1st part of W. Wordsworth’s «Essay upon Epitaphs». Meanwhile, the article outlines a broader representative spectrum of sociocultural, psychological and aesthetical ideas which determine how the authors of the end of the 18th—the first third of the 19th century deal with funerary and memorial topics. The article shows how medical and healthcare attitudes of the epoch, as well as some ideological shifts, which paved the way for European cemetery reform, filter the choices and the ways of textual representations of traditional literary rhetorics (Horatian topos of beatus ille in particular). On the other hand, the study demonstrates how narrative models conventional for the first third of 19th century function as the universal language suitable for describing utterly different graveyard spaces. The important research subject is the authors’ critical attitude to the official state commemorative politics, which involved a major change in aesthetic trends of the epoch. Development of associanist perception and sentience theory constitutes new demands for funerary and commemorative material culture and, in the case of Pushkin’s poem, stimulates the rethinking and transformation of well-established elegiac figurative and narrative patterns.
Enacting remembrance: turning toward memorializing September 11th

Abstract:The memorial at the site of the former World Trade Center will open on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 to help us commemorate, honor, educate, and mourn. Memorializing is an act that involves shared memory and collective grieving-aiming also to restore severed communal bonds and dismantled cultural ideals. As such, it is a form of cultural renewal that can transform traumatized mourners into an ethical community of memory. The active rituals of memorial activity utilize both inscribed and non-inscribed practices to help survivors of mass trauma manage fear, disorganization, and helplessness as well as sorrow. To bear witness to horrific events and the suffering they induced is a moral act. To do so together with people who may have seen the events of 9/11 from other perspectives, while also remembering one's own vision of what mattered, may mean learning to tolerate multiple conflicting narratives about the events' meanings. It is time to turn our attention from the memorial to memorializing.

Abstract:Abstract This study introduces the concept of “self-authorized commemorative practices” to the analysis of semiotic landscapes. It aims to draw attention to commemorative practices by which individuals assert their presence within the semiotic landscape, beyond the influence of powerful authorities that typically determine the visible commemorative aspects of public space. The multimodal practices employed include the use of language, images and artefacts, and their emplacement in the semiotic landscapes. The study is based on two complete photographic inventories of all signage in public space in a rural community in northwest Germany, taken over a ten-year period, in addition to more than twenty years of participant observation. The findings reveal layers of self-authorized commemorative practices, often concealed in plain sight but discernible to the trained eye, interwoven with the local narratives associated with the semiotic landscape. Individuals, through their own means, leave lasting marks that commemorate their existence, achievements, deceased loved ones, or social traditions. These self-authorized practices contribute to the rich tapestry of the semiotic landscape, challenging and expanding our understanding of commemoration beyond the influence of traditional authorities.

Challenging Narratives: Arthur Ashe and the Practice of Counter-Monumentality on Richmond’s Monument Avenue

Abstract:Monument Avenue, a national historic landmark in Richmond, Virginia, has long been famous for its grand portrait monuments honouring local Civil War “heroes.” In 1996, the memorial landscape changed radically with the addition of a bronze portrait statue of Arthur Ashe, a black American who was honoured for his accomplishments as an international tennis star, an author, and a humanitarian. The location and the design of Ashe’s portrait monument generated heated debate, and its ultimate inclusion on Monument Avenue was an attempt to challenge the traditional meaning of the space as a memorial to the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. In this article I trace how the racialised narrative of Monument Avenue has been constructed, challenged, upheld, and mediated throughout its long and troubled history. I begin by looking to antiquity both as a framework for understanding how statues have historically worked to construct and challenge cultural narratives and as a means of placing viewer reactions to portrait monuments in a broader historical context. Against this background, I argue that the portrait statue of Arthur Ashe ultimately failed to establish an effective counter-narrative to the traditional interpretation of Monument Avenue as a celebration of a white, Confederate past. Finally, I suggest that repeated small-scale interventions, often in the form of graffiti, have been more successful in confronting, mediating, and challenging the visual message Confederate monuments continue to embody.

Abstract:The present article investigates the function of ritual acts as a form of communication vis-à-vis cultural meaning in the life of the Teutonic Knights. As a condensed form of communal expression, rituals exhibit an acute potential to render present collective identity and shape the lives of the communities that practice them. Such potential is manifest in the institutional arrangement of the Teutonic Order in various forms with particular reference to their dual standing in society, insofar as they drew upon the societal models of the oratores and the bellatores. Particularly relevant to the current study, considerations of cultural historian and social analyst Jan Assmann regarding symbolic acts and collective living memory assist in creating the theoretical framework for the study’s deliberations. With Assmann’s insights in mind, ritual is understood as a communicative vector of cultural meaning – so to speak – of living memory. The analysis then turns to an examination of select representative examples from diverse scenarios in the existence of the Teutonic Knights, thereby taking into account internal, public, and participatory contexts of symbolic moments. The study thus explores how, while rituals can commemorate memorialised events from the past, they are also able to enact the living memory of a collective entity, ultimately claiming that the examined symbolic acts exhibited both communicative and transformative potential.

Abstract:The National War Memorial in Ottawa, Canada, occupies a central ceremonial square in the capital city. Placed in 1939 to commemorate Canada’s involvement in World War I, the monument is the featured element of the national Remembrance Day services, and it is often visited by dignitaries and bestowed wreaths. In this article, I suggest that beyond offering mere instruction in the history of Canada’s World War I involvement, the National War Memorial produces potent lessons in how to feel about being Canadian, and how to mourn as a Canadian. In particular, the National War Memorial has become a conduit for articulations of imperial nostalgia; it compels persuasive, ritual allegiance to Canada’s imperial White settler past. These affective relationships are produced with such success that other identifications—or the proposal of alternative meanings of the monument—are understood as acts of deviance.

Abstract:Abstract This article argues that the so-called ‘countermonuments’ which emerged in West Germany as of the 1980s are not as pathbreakingly new, in terms of their intentions, as has hitherto been thought. It examines post-1945 West German memorials to Jewish victims of Nazism to demonstrate this point. At the same time it seeks to define exactly what it was that was new about the ‘countermonuments’. It concludes by identifying a new breed of memorials which developed out of, and to an extent contemporaneously with the countermonuments, and which this article terms ‘combimemorials’ to designate their integration of memorial, archival, and exhibition elements.

Abstract:Based on a decade of work at my home campus, I argue that a counter-memory campus tour answers Ersula Ore and Matthew Houdek's call for rhetorical storytelling of experiences and places related to race, violence, and white supremacy. I recount ways that counter-memory campus tours can "breathe life into memory" of first Black students and resuscitate their lived experience in profound ways for contemporary audiences. Amid campus landscapes marked by "white memorial time," I argue that counter-memory tours resist that linearity, attend to the spatio-temporal politics of race and trauma, and honor our Black pioneers in higher education.
