Abstract:Spatial variability of nutrients in the plough layer (020 cm) of paddy soils from Pinghu City in the Taihu lake region in China was studied using GIS technique and geostatistical analysis. Six hundreds and seventeen soil samples were collected and analyzed in turns of its organic matter, total nitrogen(N), available phosphorus(P) and available potassium(K) content. Semivariograms for soil organic matter and total N were well fitted by spherical model, while semivariogram for logarithm conversion value of available P and semivariogram for available K were fitted by spherical model and exponential model, respectively. The spatial variabilities of organic matter, total N and available P were primarily controlled by structural factors of parent material, relief and soil types, whereas variability of available K were greatly affected by random factors such as fertilization, crop system and soil management. It was found that spatial heterogeneity of organic matter, total N and available P was great, but that of available K was small. In view of the lighttexture of soils in southeast Pinghu city, heavy fertilization in this region for high yield was liable to bring about nonpoint source pollution.
