Abstract:This paper introduced the current situaton about the research of assembly model, analyzed several different kind of description method about assembly model and their advantage and disadvantage at first. Then the paper suggested an integrated design oriented product assembly model which is based on GL (Generalized Link) and hierarchical structure. It can not only describe the hierarchical relation information, position relation information, connection relation information, movement relation information, transmission relation information and matching relation information, but also describe non engineering semantic information such as design parameters and their constraint relation information, analyses feature information. The design system which is based on geometric model and the above assembly model can support the Top down, decomposition process and the concurrent design process.

Abstract:To build a top-down design supporting system, an effective assembly model for top-down design and its efficient algorithm of assembly planning were developed. After analyzing the process of top-down design, an approach to build the product model at multiple levels of detail (LOD model) for top-down design was presented. In this LOD model, the super-component model and the simplified-component model were the simplified representations of different complex assemblies. A novel approach was proposed to generate assembly sequences layer upon layer, and step by step. The computation complexity of assembly planning was reduced dramatically due to efficient simplification of the model and the obtained assembly sequences were more feasible and practical.

Abstract:The essence of product assembly modeling is how to express the external and internal relations of assembly unit.Analyzing geometric modeling information of assembly unit,matching and connecting information and the constraint law of design,this paper puts forward a kind of general assembly modeling.This method is based on hiberarchy information of assembly unit,which is related to topological connecting information of assembly unit.It is designed to supporting product of lifecycle engineering design(LCED).There are the following advantages of this method:(1)Its modeling corresponds to the conceptual modeling of designer in data structure,which is easy for the designer to understand;(2)supporting the top-down design and the whole process of product LCED.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of complex product,assembly modeling technology of complex product in virtual environment was proposed and analyzed, including model representation and assembly model.The model representation was carried out with hybrid form of accurate model and mesh model.Based on the unit classification,a four-leveled multi-hierarchical correlative model based on unit was built.With assembly modeling,the flow of virtual assembly simulation was established.It verifies the effectiveness of assembly modeling with a ship assembly modeling example.

Abstract:To overcome the drawbacks in current CAD system, the product data model based on hierarchical structure was built by using EXPRESS-G method. By using technique combined with the product functions representation with product definitions, the model clearly has defined the hierarchical relations of the product and the geometric and non-geometric relations among the components and assemblies (geometric position and assembly relations). The mechanism to represent explicitly design intentions and technical requirements was proposed, which provides the feasible way to integrate CAD with computer aided assembly process planning (CAAP) system. The model also gives supports for conceptual design of the product and representation of product design data in different abstract level in concurrent engineering.

Abstract:A method of abstracting disassembly information from generalized CAD assembly model of automobile product was presented,which can support all the processes in the product life cycle.Some assumed conditions about the disassemblability of product assembly body and the disassembling process,and the parts mergence theorem were proposed.The product disassemble sequence planning algorithm and the product path planning algorithm were designed applicable to the product model built by using the commercial CAD software,Pro/Engineer.Then an improved method for geometrical intervene inspecting(GII) was put forward to transform three-dimensional intervene inspecting into two-dimensional one using the projection principle.Consequently the practical disassembly path could be approximated by the combination of multiple lines.The final drive and drive axle of a heavyloaded off-road vehicle were taken as examples,through attaching constraints and definition to their three-dimensional models built using the Pro/Engineer platform,a generalized CAD model was established.The results show that the dynamical simulation and analysis of product assembly/disassembly can be realized in the analysis system of the generalized CAD model constructed with the secondary development based on Pro/Engineer CAD platform.

Abstract:Purpose Three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) assembly model has become important resource for design reuse in enterprises, which implicates plenty of design intent, assembly intent, design experience knowledge and functional structures. To acquire quickly CAD assembly models associated with specific functions by using product function requirement information in the product conceptual design phase for model reuse, this paper aims to find an approach for structure-function correlations analysis and functional semantic annotation of mechanical CAD assembly model before functional semantic-based assembly retrieval. Design/methodology/approach An approach for structure-function correlations analysis and functional semantic annotation of CAD assembly model is proposed. First, the product knowledge model is constructed based on ontology including design knowledge and function knowledge. Then, CAD assembly model is represented by part attributed adjacency graph and partitioned into multiple functional regions. Assembly region and flow-activity region are defined for structure-function correlations analysis of CAD assembly model. Meanwhile, the extraction process of assembly region and flow-activity region is given in detail. Furthermore, structure-function correlations analysis and functional semantic annotation are achieved by considering comprehensively assembly structure and assembled part shape structure in CAD assembly model. After that, a structure-function relation model is established based on polychromatic sets for expressing explicitly and formally relationships between functional structures, assembled parts and functional semantics. Findings The correlation between structure and function is analyzed effectively, and functional semantics corresponding to structures in CAD assembly model are labeled. Additionally, the relationships between functional structures, assembled parts and functional semantics can be described explicitly and formally. Practical implications - The approach can be used to help designers accomplish functional semantic annotation of CAD assembly models in model repository, which provides support for functional semantic-based CAD assembly retrieval in the product conceptual design phase. These assembly models can be reused for product structure design and assembly process design. Originality/value The paper proposes a novel approach for structure-function correlations analysis and functional semantic annotation of mechanical CAD assembly model. Functional structures in assembly model are extracted and analyzed from the point of view of assembly structure and function part structure. Furthermore, the correlation relation between structures, assembled parts and functional semantics is expressed explicitly and formally based on polychromatic sets.

Abstract:The product design of current CAD software system hasn’ satisfied the design requirements in new fields of concurrent engineering and CIMS. This paper introduces a new product assembly modeling system based on Pro/E which is supported by product assembly model.In support of product assembly model,this system can effectively improve the quality of product design, support product concurrent design and satisfy the product market requirments which change more quickly. The authors not only present the basic conception of product assembly model and its features, but also introduce its general design, system function modules and system interface in product assembly modeling system. Now this system has been effectively realized on SUN workstation. We have acquired a lot of pleasure results.

Abstract:An assembly process and quality check integrated product type assembly configuration data network model is proposed to formalize interrelationship among engine, assembly task, assembly process, assembly procedure and check items. An engine assembly configuration data network model is suggested. It can be used not only to describe instance relationship between engines and product type assembly configuration data templates, but also to maintain engine assembly configuration after component exchange. Correspondent searching algorithms are designed to compare assembly configuration between engines, and to output procedure and check items mixed on-spot process guide card content dynamically.

Abstract:Nowadays, there are abundant product models in existence that contain plenty of design knowledge in various disciplines. As an approach to taking full advantages of the existing design knowledge, model reuse plays a more and more important role in complex product design due to the enormous time and cost saving it could bring. To help designers find the right models for reuse quickly and exactly, the content-based assembly retrieval is a promising but still immature way at present. In this paper we present a novel assembly interface representation which captures much more design knowledge in assembly interfaces than plain geometric-matings used most in current CAD models. Then the hierarchical assembly descriptor based on the presented assembly interface representation is described and compared to assembly descriptors in other work. Furthermore, the corresponding similarity assessment method is given to evaluate the distances among assemblies and a complete assembly retrieval method is also described. Finally, an assembly retrieval prototype system is implemented, based on which assembly search samples are analyzed to demonstrate the improved effectiveness brought into the assembly retrieval.

Abstract:Aiming at product assembly design and optimization in concurrent engineering, we present an integrated product assembly analysis system of assembly sequences planning(ASP)and design for assembly(DFA). The assembly modeling method suitable for this integrated system is studied. A more complete assembly model is designed. Apart from the assembly draft and liaisons diagram information, the assembly tree structure, parts parameters and liaisons parameters, etc.,are also included in this assembly model.An example is given to illustrate the computerization of this modeling method.

Abstract:In order to comprehensively analyse and evaluate the assembly process of a worm-gear reducer, a data structure which can integrallty describe the assembly information of the worm-gear reducer is developed. Description of assmebly character of part,establishing tree-structure of assembly of product, establishing generalized matrix saved assembly relationship and the language description of assembly model are introduced.By means of the data structure, computer can chart form tree-structure diagram of assembly, and save assembly relationship and assembly information of each of part.Assembly relationship and assembly information are saved in the node of tree-assembly, and every data of tree-assembly can be queried, deleted, inserted and modified through pointer or chain. This method can availably analyse and evaluate the assembly process of parts and assembly. A worm-gear reducer is taken as an example to validate the data structure.

Abstract:Aimed at the issue of dimensional constraint in the process of assembly variant design,a part information model of assembly was presented.The basic principle of assembly variant design was researched.A set of basic constraint groups were defined according to the mating relationship type among constituent parts of assembly,and the dimensional relationship model reflecting the relationship among constituent parts of each constraint group was established.With the help of tabular layouts of article characteristics technology,the top-down variant design process of assembly was realized.The feasibility of the model was verified through the variant design case of assembly trolley.The results show that the part information model and dimensional relationship model among constituent assembly parts can satisfy the requirement of dimensional transferring during variant design process,and support the variant design of assembly.

Abstract:Product modeling is one of the key factors influencing industrial completeness,including part modeling and assembly modeling in the mainstream computer-aided design (CAD) systems.However,when creating a part solid model at part modeling stage,the information of how it will interface with other parts assembly design intent (ADI),which is known by the designer,is not stored in the part model.As a result,the ADI has to be implemented again at assembly modeling stage,through numerous tedious and error-prone operations such as picking up geometry elements and inputting constraint commands.To alleviate these problems,firstly,the transmission process of the ADI in product modeling is systematically analyzed,revealing the principle of ADI modeling.Then,a previously developed concept of assembly feature pair (AFP) is used to model the abstract ADI (consisted of mating structure and mating behavior) merely known by the designer.Finally,the paradigm of transmitting ADI in product modeling and assembly process simulation based on AFP is demonstrated,and a gear bump sample is analyzed to validate the feasibility of modeling ADI and integrating the two stages through AFP,indicating that the proposed method may have the potential to make the ransmission of ADI in a consistent and simple way,and further to enrich and facilitate the development of CAD modeling theory and technology systems.

Abstract:Assembly process modeling mechanism, which contains all the process elements, is crucial for assembly process planning. This study proposes an assembly process modeling mechanism based on the product hierarchy, and the assembly-by-disassembly approach is used for constructing the assembly process model. Firstly, three stage for process models called disassembly process model (DPM), rough assembly process model (RAPM), and finish assembly process model (FAPM) are presented, and the process information, such as the motion information, process marks is given. Secondly, the operation semantics for assembly process model is proposed to describe the physical constraints between parts and components. Thirdly, the establishing procedure of assembly process model is given, which includes establishing process of disassembly task tree, design process of disassembly process node, mapping process from DPM to RAPM, and mapping process from RAPM to FAPM four subprocesses. At last, a prototype assembly process planning system, called AMTProcesser, is developed based on the proposed modeling mechanism.
AutoAssem: An Automated Assembly Planning System for Complex Products

Abstract:To automate assembly planning for complex products such as aircraft components, an assembly planning and simulation system called AutoAssem has been developed. In this paper, its system architecture is presented; the main components and the key technologies in each component are discussed. The core functions of the system that have been focused include Digital Assembly Modeling, Assembly Sequence Planning (ASP), Path Planning, Visualization, and Simulation. In contrast to existing assembly planning systems, one of the novelties of the system is it allows the assembly plans be automatically generated from a CAD assembly model with minimal manual interventions. Within the system, new methodologies have been developed to: (i) create Assembly Relationship Matrices; (ii) plan assembly sequences; (iii) generate assembly paths; and (iv) visualize and simulate assembly plans. To illustrate the application of the system, the assembly of a worm gear reducer is used as an example throughout this paper for demonstration purpose. AutoAssem has been successfully applied to virtual assembly design for various complex products so far.

Abstract:To develop a highly effective and efficient assembly system for small and medium-sized enterprises,a multi-layer and multi-dimensional assembly integrated model was defined.To realize each assembly design function effectively,a set of assembly application models were proposed to model assembly topological structure,assembly relationship,assembly process and simulation respectively.The dimension chain,assembly relationship matrix,electronic technical documents and so on were generated automatically.The assembly domain model was used to express assembly public semantic structure and domain knowledge,and single data source of assembly which supported data reuse and sharing was established.Furthermore,the assembly data transformation and derivation methods were studied to realize automatic development of model data oriented to structure,semantic and procedure.This modeling approach was validated in AeroAssem assembly design system's design and development.

Abstract:To implement the top-down design method supported by the bottom-up design method,the paper proposed a hybrid assembly model based on product family,which is made up of assembly framework model,assembly hierarchical model,constraint relational model,part attribute model and parametric design model.The high-level assembly framework model was introduced to represent a designer′s intention and automatically transfer assembly constraints to the downstream phase,thus implementing the process-oriented top-down design method;the low-level constraint relational model was introduced to record various constraint relations among parts and to check,improve and complete the reconstruction of the final assembly model,executing the result-oriented bottom-up design method;the parametric!design model was imported to accomplish the variant design of an assembly body,reusing the previous knowledge.Finally,an oil pump was used to illustrate the effectiveness of the hybrid assembly model.
