Abstract:This study was proposed to investigate the quality of silages of corn stover(CS) and rice straw(RS),and their digestion in sheep as influenced by adding cellulase-xylanase based enzyme and/or wheat bran(WB) in two experiments.In trial 1,the silages of CS and RS were prepared in experimental silos by setting four treatments for each:(1)no additive for control;(2)adding enzyme of 0.8,1.3 or 1.8 g per kg of straws dry matter(DM) for group Ⅰ,Ⅱ Ⅲ respectively.Addling enzyme had little effect on the sense quality of CS silage(CSS).The CSS of control was also of good quality due to higher water soluble carbonhydrate(WSC) in CS(12.9%).Significantly(P0.05 or 0.01) declining trends were found in the content of neutral detergent fiber(NDF),ratio of ammonia- to total- nitrogen(NH 3-N/TN) and pH value of the CSS with increased level of enzyme,wheras a significantly(P0.01) rising trend in the content of lactic and total acids.And the CSS of group Ⅲ had the greatest improved quality,with 31%(P0.01) and 8.5%(P0.01) lower in the NH 3-N/TN and pH value,and 33%(P0.01) higher in lactic acid than that of control.Significantly(P0.01) elevated trends occurred in the ruminal degradability of DM at 48 h(DMD (48)),in vitro digestibility of organic matter(OMD) and estimated metabolizable energy(ME) of CSS as level of enzyme increased.The OMD increased by 6.6(P0.01),8.5(P0.01) and 9.7%(P0.01) for the CSS of group Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ as compared with control.The addition of enzyme slightly improved smell and relieved moldiness in RS silage(RSS),and didn′t upgrade it away from poor quality owing to its low WSC(3.5%).However,adding enzyme over 1.3 g/kg significantly(P0.01) improved the fermentation quality of RSS,judged by a 8% lower pH value,decreased NH 3-N/TN by 16%,increased content of lactic acid by 26% relatively to control and undetected butyric acid.The response to adding enzyme was lower for the RSS than the CSS,assessed by a lower lactic acid(22 g/kg) and higher pH value(5).In trial 2,preparation of RSS was arranged according to a 2×4 two way factorial design in experimental silos.The WB was added into RS at levels of 0,3,6 or 9%(fresh basis) combined with adding enzyme of 0 or 1.3 g/kg.Adding WB of 6 to 9% markedly improved the sense quality of RSS based on the color,smell,tactility and grade,and significantly(P0.01) ameliorated the fermentation quality of RSS over control with no additives,appraised by lower values in the pH,NH 3-N/TN and content of butyric acid and NDF,and increased the content of lactic acid.And also the RSS with WB of 6 to 9% had significantly(P0.01) higher parameters of in vitro gas production(GP),DMD (48),OMD and ME by sheep than that of control.When adding enzyme of 1.3 g/kg combined with supplementary WB,the sense and fermentation quality of RSS were further significantly(P0.01) enhanced over the RSS with WB alone.And combination of enzyme with WB further significantly(P0.01) elevated GP parameters,DMD (48),OMD and ME of RSS also,with average increase by 5% and 8% in the OMD and ME.Furthermore,the RSS reached the best quality and highest digestion by combining enzyme of 1.3 g/kg with WB of 6% to 9%.It is inferred that adding enzyme may evidently improve the fermentation quality and digestion of CSS,but those of RSS can be effectively improved only by combining addition of enzyme with WB,not by adding enzyme alone.
