Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effects of intravenous magnesium sulfate(MgSO4) administration on ischemia-reperfusion injury of the spinal cord.Method:The model of spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion in rabbits was established according to the description of Tetik.New Zealand White rabbits(n=27) were randomly and blindly assigned to 3 groups:group A(0.25ml/kg·h MgSO4),group B(saline water) and group C(sham operation). The change of somatosensory evoked-potentials(SEP),neurological scoring and histopathological examination were observed.Result:SEP amplitudes and latencies in group C did not change during the procedures and all the animals recovered without neurological deficits at the end of ischemia period. The waves of group B disappeared and waves of group A reduced to (29.3±1.9)% of the base line. This was followed by a gradual return to (74.5±2.3)% and (49.2±2.1)% of the initial amplitude after 60min reperfusion in group A and group B correspondingly(P<0.01).The recovery of SEP(N1,P1) latency was better in group A than in group B(P<0.05).The average motor function score was significantly higher in group A than in group B at 24h and 48h after the reperfusion(P<0.05). The number of normal neurons in the anterior spinal cord was significantly more in group A than in group B at 48h after reperfusion(P<0.01).Conclusion:The results suggest that MgSO4 may reduce spinal cord injury and preserve neurological function in transient spinal cord ischemia in rabbits.
