Abstract:The Cryosphere is one of the major components of the climate system, its change and impacts have been paid much attention in recent years. This paper reveals the spatial and temporal change of cryosphere in the Northern Hemisphere over the past several decades, finds that the very low sea ice concentration occurred in the central Arctic Sea in summertime, states the influ-ence of glacier change on water resources, identifies the interactions between snow, sea ice, permafrost and cli-mate, and points out some questions which need to be studied in the future.
PROGRESS IN THE GLOBAL ANALYSIS TO THE ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICAL EQUATIONS

Abstract:The initial value problem weather prediction is a classical deterministic problem in classical physics,there are a lot of difficulties in the method of initial value problem to predict long range weather and short range climate.Three characteristics of atmospheric motion are very important:nonlinearity,being forced and dissipation. It is necessary to combine the dynamical and statistical methods.The prediction problem could be looked as the inverse problem of the initial value problem,i.e. an evolution problem,so the multiple time data in the past could be used to modify initial values and/or numerical prediction model.The inverse problems are divided into there kinds,there are corresponding solutions. After the inverse problem of the initial value problem is introduced,the global analysis to the atmospheric dynamical equations(ADE) are reviewed. The global analysis is another method of climate research different from the simple initial value problem. The global analysis is also called global asymptotic analysis.It is used to study the long range behavior of deterministic systems.It is unnecessary to solve the equations,the properties of ADE are researched by means of studying the equations themselves.With the aid of the direct geometric pictures(the concept of phase space is introduced),the qualitative global analysis to the limit solution set of ADE could be done.It is proved that ADE is a special operator equation in Hilbert Space.The properties of operators must be maintained when ADE is simplified or discretized.It is revealed that the nonlinear adaptation process of a system to external source,so the system could be described by a small number of degrees of freedom sustaining attractors because of dissipative process.Cell to cell mapping is a powerful tool to study nonlinear systems,by use of the concept and method of cell to cell mapping,the global analysis to the general characteristics of numerical model of atmospheric system could be done.The global analysis to round off errors and observational errors could be done.With the aid of the language of probability theory,the statistical description of the characteristics could be given.It is revealed that the indeterminacy of individual state and the determinacy of global state.The restrict mathematical definition of the vague concept of “CLIMATE”is:climate could be defined as probability distribution function of state variables in chaotic attractors determined by controlling variables,and it is proved that it exists chaotic state in climate system really.The approach of quantitative studies to the predictability of the atmosphere could be given,the predictability is the time before the state of a system arrive the probability distribution of chaotic attractors.

Abstract:In the past thirty years,climate change had become one of the most important issues in the world,and climate philosophy had become an important philosophy field.This article is to introduce the main issues in climate philosophy.Firstly,climate model is the core concept and fundamental tool in climate science,and the climate philosophy focused on the nature and test of climate model,the meaning of parameterization and tuning in climate modeling,the relation between climate model and experience,etc.Uncertainty climate science is the most important reason for the climate debate,so climate philosophy discusses a lot about the ontological and cognitive roots of uncertainty in climate science.The consensus in climate science is another hot point,so what is the meaning and significance of scientific consensus in climate science,and what is the meaning and significance of skeptic and denier of climate change,is another important philosophy issue.The politics of climate change is also a central issue in climate philosophy,we should discuss two of the most influencial political philosophy frames in the western world.

Abstract:The climate system is composed of five spheres in the earth system,i.e.,atmosphere,hydrosphere,cryosphere,lithosphere and biosphere.The interaction among these spheres of climate system determines the natural climate variability.As the human activities increase,more and more influence has exerted on the climate system.Both natural and anthropogenic climate changes have influenced greatly on the society,the economics and the human life,and have led to the arousing of the issues on the national security,the environmental diplomacy and the sustainable development,etc.In order to understand the climate change and its forcings,and forecast the future climate change,the basic need is to set up a comprehensive climate observing system dealing with the five spheres in the earth system.The detailed information on the variation of the climate system can be provided by the high quality climate data and related products obtained from the climate observing system.The development of designing a climate observing system in China is reviewed,especially the role played by the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences.Based on the analysis of the climate observing system,some crucial issues concerning the setting up of the climate observing system are discussed.These issues include the scientific requirements to the climate observing system,its representativeness,comprehensiveness,standard,supportiveness to the climate prediction and projection and to the climate model development,application to the interdisciplinary,social and economical application,data opening and sharing,assimilation and reanalysis of the climate system data,and the rescue of the historical data.

Abstract:In recent years,with the increasing impacts of climate change,climate change has become important social issue,economic issue and issue of international conflict from subject of natural sciences,which draws great concern of public. We should correctly understand and treat the IPCC report and its different opinions,adhere to the national policy of energy saving and emission reduction,adjust the industrial structure and eliminate backward industries. Internationally,China must strive to have our rights of necessary emission and development. We must strengthen our scientific research on climate change and enhance the ability to respond to climate change.

Abstract:Climate change is an important current issue and there is much debate about the causes and effects. This article examines the changes in our climate, comparing the recent changes with those in the past. There have been changes in temperature, resulting in an average global rise over the last 300 years, as well as widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level. There are many theories for the causes of the recent change in the climate, including some natural and some human influenced. The most widely believed cause of the climate change is increasing levels of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and as the atmosphere plays an important role in making our planet inhabitable, it is important to understand it in order to protect it. However, there are other theories for the cause of climate change, the Sun and cosmic rays, for example, are felt by some to have a significant role to play. There is also well-established evidence that the three Milankovitch cycles change the amount and alter the distribution of sunlight over the Earth, heating and cooling it. There are many influences on our planet and they all have differing levels of impact. The purpose of this article is to review the present overall position and urge open, reasoned discussion of the problem.

Abstract:Introductions and discussions are made in this paper on the modeling and problems of the regional climate changes in China. It is pointed out that the regional climate models are necessary to be developed in order to study the mechanisms of the regional climate changes and to predict these changes because the large scale general circulation models and the coupled atmosphere ocean models have uncertainties in their modeling results. The simulation results of the floods in 1991 happened in the Changjiang and Huaihe Basins are introduced, and it is found that the capacities of the regional climate models are fairly good and they have promising prospects. It is further discussed of the treatment schemes of the lateral boundary conditions and their impacts on the modeling results. At last, the problems in the regional climate modeling at the present and the possible solutions of those problems are necessarily discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The spatial and temporal characteristics and dynamic mechanism of arid and semi-arid climate change have been reviewed in this paper.Recently,most of the research on the arid and semi-arid regions climate change mainly focused on the specific regions.However,there are less systematic studies for the relationship of climate change on the different global arid and semi-arid regions.The understanding of the mechanism of land surface process model development is another shortage on the climate change studies because the experiments are limited to work on it.Finally,the questions in arid and semi-arid climate change studies and future research direction are proposed.

Abstract:Climate change is one of the biggest risks of our time for human society.Anticipating the future under the climate change and identifying effective climate mitigation strategies are very challenging tasks.Integrated assessment model (IAM) is the mainstream methodological approach in climate change research.IAMs simulate the complex relations between earth, social and economic systems that determine future climate change, and they require input from atmospheric scientists, oceanographers, ecologists, economists, policy analysts, and others.China has become the world's largest carbon dioxide emitter as from 2017.This special issue on Integrated Assessment Model Analysis of Climate Change in China focuses on the current state of knowledge about the effects of climate change on natural and socioeconomic systems in China and how to mitigate or adapt to climate change; meanwhile with particular emphasis on how to narrow down the uncertainty of possible outcomes caused by IAM methods and so many climate-sensitive factors, such as energy technology innovation, land use transformation, socioeconomic development, domestic and international market fluctuation, earth system evolution, and so on.Four papers focus on past and future impacts of climate change and techniques that researchers are using to study them.Yuan and Sun investigate the potential human damage and economic losses in China from weather-related events (including rainfall-related events, drought events and cold-related events) under future climate conditions explained by representative concentration pathways (RCPs).Considering the climate change has led to significant temperature rise, Zhang et al. profile an effort to estimate the changes in electricity consumption due to temperature fluctuation resulted from climate change at the county scale in rural China.Xie et al. use a global computable general economic model to assess the role of the domestic market and international trade on food production under extreme drought and heat due to climate change.Zang et al. simulate the influence of the urbanization on hydrological processes under different precipitation conditions and land use scenarios, which are likely to occur with climate change.Two papers try to draw a picture of the pathway for achieving the short-, mid-and longterm climate mitigation targets.Jiang et al. explore the required energy transition pathway for achieving the long-term global 2 °C and 1.5 °C targets and meanwhile meeting the targets of air pollutants reduction and energy security in China, based on the IPAC model.

Abstract:The working group 1 of IPCC has published the fifth science assessment report in 2013.Based on lots of evidences of observations and simulations by climate models,it continues to emphasize the key point that the global is warming at the present time and continues to warm in the future due to increasing human emissions.Several sci-entific issues of global warming in this paper will be summarized,such as differences among several datasets of ob-served global surface air temperature,effects of different basic climate periods,detection and attribution of global warming during the 20th century,and the trends of global temperature change in the 21st century.It raises the fur-ther research issues of global warming in the future.The key points are:the qualities of the observed data should be raised;it should be noticed that the different basic climate periods have various values;the capabilities of both dec-adal and interdecadal variabilities as simulated by the climate models would be improved,and the reasons of the hi-atus in global mean surface warming of the past 15 years have to be studied,therefore to revise the climate models;the uncertainties of projected the global climate change in future are from climate model differences,and various anthropogenic emission scenarios,as well as impacts of internal variability of climate system and actions of the nat-ural external forcing.

Abstract:Climate change communication is a crucial strategy for addressing the major challenges of climate change, and the knowledge mapping analysis and overview of it helps to clarify research progress. Based on CiteSpace, 428 pieces of domestic and foreign literature are collected to clarify the basic status of climate change communication research and summarize research hotspots and prospects. The study found that: (1) The earliest traceable English literature on climate change communication appeared in 2000. The number of articles published has risen steadily since 2008, reaching its first peak in 2015. (2) In contrast, research into Chinese climate change communication began late and progressed slowly. The Chinese literature on climate change communication first appeared in 2009. Although domestic research generally continues to pay attention to this phenomenon, there is still room for development compared with international research. (3) The research hotspots for climate change communication are obtained through keyword co-occurrence analysis. Public perceptions of climate change are strongly influenced by political ideology. Since climate change has political attributes, people from different political parties or groups form their views on climate change through identity protection. (4) The research content on climate change communication can be summarized into the following six aspects: the development of climate change communication research; differences in public perceptions of climate change; factors influencing climate change communication; key elements of the climate change communication process; the important role of the media in climate change communication; and effective strategies for climate change communication. Finally, the shortcomings of this study are summarized and future research prospects on climate change communication are put forward from the perspectives of research methods, research contexts, and research paradigms.

Abstract:The economics of climate change is based on the analysis methods of economics,and is combined with the characteristics of climate change such as externalities,risk and uncertainties. It focuses on the economic effects of climate change and the comparison of various kinds of programs on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and their policy instruments in terms of efficiency and fairness,so as to make international climate systems meet the requirements of fairness,efficiency and sustainability. In five aspects,namely the origin and attribute of the subject,the economic characteristics of climate change,the comparison of different policy instruments,climate policy assessment models and emissions abatement programs,this paper presents the history and the latest achievements of the economics of climate change and points out the inadequacies of the subject at this stage and the future research direction.

Abstract:A bibliometric analysis of climate change research was conducted to evaluate the current trends,using the 7606 literatures in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database for the period 1993-2012.Statistics showed that the number of climate change related papers and journal increased significantly,the papers mainly related to basic science,the Chinese Academy of Sciences published the most papers in all institutions,Beijing published the most papers in all regions,the focus of research are climate change,global warming and global climate change,the hot research were greenhouse gas emissions,developing countries.This paper concluded a widespread interest in climate change research.

Abstract:Technoscience-science under influence of society,politics and economy-is a kind of constructive practical activity in a seamless network of dynamic forces coming from human factors and non-human factors.The factors such as politics,science,technology,society and nature,etc are intertwined inseparably.The goal of Copenhagen Climate Change Conference is to reach a new agreement or establish a network or coalition of working countries based on the game playing of the so called "scientific evidences".However,scientific "evidences" from each party differed greatly,a coalition could not be established and the conference almost failed.Though there are principles of fairness between the developed and developing academics,the gap of climate research leads to extremely unfair political and economic consequences.In order to enhance the asymmetric bargaining position,China has to strengthen independent scientific research on climatology to strive for more discourse power.

Abstract:In recent decades, the damage and economic losses caused by climate change and extreme climate events have been increasing rapidly. Although scientists all over the world have made great efforts to understand and predict climatic variations, there are still several major problems for improving climate prediction. In 2020, the Center for Climate System Prediction Research (CCSP) was established with support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. CCSP aims to tackle three scientific problems related to climate prediction -namely, El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) prediction, extended-range weather forecasting, and interannual-to-decadal climate prediction -and hence provide a solid scientific basis for more reliable climate predictions and disaster prevention. In this paper, the major objectives and scientific challenges of CCSP are reported, along with related achievements of its research groups in monsoon dynamics, land-atmosphere interaction and model development, ENSO variability, intraseasonal oscillation, and climate prediction. CCSP will endeavor to tackle key scientific problems in these areas.

Abstract:The effects of the land-sea contrast and the topography on the climatic properties are simulated rn this paper by use of a p- a incorporated coordinate system mode! in a zonal domain.In this paper we firstly discuss the statistical features of the model and find that the capability of the model is stable,with the same land-sea distribution and topography seven monthly mean climate states are close to one another,their variance is even less than the initial one.Secondly,we focally discuss the effects of the land-sea contrast and the topography on the modeled climate fields.It is pointed out that the land-sea contrast and the topography influence the atmosphere mainly through the heating ef-fect and the former has larger influences on the simulated large scale climate fields than the latter.

Abstract:Climate and climate change have always been a research focus of atmospheric sciences. This paper summaries research efforts, achievements and international contributions of the Chinese scientific community on climate and climate change over the past 70 years. The review is based on papers published officially in national or international scientific journals,and is organized to cover six aspects:(1) general climate studies;(2) impact of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau;(3) impact of the East Asian monsoon;(4) influences of teleconnection oscillation and westerlies;(5) climate dynamics and development of climate models; and(6) climate change. It is, however, to be noted that the present review can not be considered as an exhaustive one, since there is a huge body of literature in the field.

Abstract:Based on the Web of Science,by using the key words of“climate change”,this paper retrieves research articles on climate change published in the journal of ,and analyzes these articles from several aspects such as article types, publication year, country/region distributions, authors’ background, publication agencies and research topics, so as to reflect the research status of climate change in the field of science communication through quantitative research. The study shows that the number of papers on climate change published in the journal of is relatively few,and there are 33 papers. Secondly,the distribution of climate change studies in the world is un even. The number of papers from Europe and the United States accounts for 90.9%of the total. Finally,the research horizon of climate change studies in science communication is very extensive. In addition to social science,it also covers environmental science and health science,showing strong interdisciplinary characteristics.
