Abstract:Langevin dynamics simulations are employed to explore the effects of chain stiffness and electrostatic interaction (EI) on the conformational behavior of a circular semiflexible polyelectrolyte (CSPE) in presence of trivalent counterions. We investigate the effect of bending energy b and the dimensionless Bjerrum length A on the conformational behaviour of the CSPE with a fixed chain length. The competition among the EIs, chain stiffness and entropy of the system leads to rich conformations for the CSPE. As the b is less than or equal to 50, The shape of the CSPE changes from a oblate ring to a rod at small A, then to a toroid at intermediate A, and finally to a globule at very large A. However, the globular conformation is not observed for large b. In addition, we find that the number of torus ring increases with A increase, while decreases with b increase. This study should be helpful in gaining insight into the conformational behaviour of charged biopolymer.

The self-assembly properties and research of hydrogen-bonded complexes are comprehensively reviewed. Meanwhile, theoretical studies on hydrogen-bonded complexes of our research group are introduced.
Perfect helical structure of semiflexible polyelectrolyte chain confined in a cylinder

Abstract:Conformations of a semiflexible polyelectrolyte (SPE) chain with neutralizing charged counterions confined in a cylinder have been investigated by off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Effects of electrostatic interactions of different Bjerrum length lB between PEs and counterions, PEs of different chain stiffness b, and cylindrical confinement of different radius R on the conformations of SPEs have been examined. At suitable combinations of the above parameters of lB, b, and R, perfect helical structures are observed, which can be well characterized by the tangent correlation function. The number of turns in perfect helix can be read accurately through counting the number of oscillation periods of correlation function. The expanded confined space with a larger cylindrical radius leads the helix phase region into a smaller range of b and lB. The physical mechanism for the formation of perfect helical structures is further explored by the distribution of chain monomers and counterions. Although helix formation has been associated with the electrostatic interactions and chain stiffness, the cylindrical confinement promotes the formation of perfect helical structures driven by entropy. This study can provide a deeper insight about mechanisms behind the conformation of biological macromolecules with oppositely charged counterions in confinement cavity.
Self-assembly of ultralong polyion nanoladders facilitated by ionic recognition and molecular stiffness.

Abstract:It is hard to obtain spatially ordered nanostructures via the polyion complexation process due to the inherent flexibility of polymers and isotropicity of ionic interactions. Here we report the formation of polyion assemblies with well-defined, periodically regular internal structure by imparting the proper stiffness to the molecular tile. A stiff bisligand TPE-C4-L2 was designed which is able to form a negatively charged supramolecular polyelectrolyte with transition metal ions. This supramolecular polyelectrolyte slowly self-assembled into polydispersed flat sheets with cocoon-like patterns. Upon the addition of an oppositely charged Ordinary polyelectrolyte, the polydispersed cocoons immediately transformed into ultralong, uniform nanoladders as a result of matched ionic density recognition. The supramolecular polyelectrolytes assembled side-by-side, and the negative charges aligned in an array. This structure forced the positively charged polymers to lie along the negative charges so that the perpendicular arrangement of the oppositely charged chains was achieved. Such precise charge recognition will provide insight into the design of advanced materials with hierarchical self-assembled structures.

Abstract:Abstract Supramolecular self-assembly of μm-to-mm sized components is essential to construct complex supramolecular systems. However, the selective assembly to form designated structures at this length scale is challenging because the short-ranged molecular recognition could hardly direct the assembly of macroscopic components. Here we demonstrate a self-sorting mechanism to automatically identify the surface chemistry of μm-to-mm components (A: polycations; B: polyanions) based on the A-B attraction and the A-A repulsion, which is realized by the additivity and the competence between long-ranged magnetic/capillary forces, respectively. Mechanistic studies of the correlation between the magnetic/capillary forces and the interactive distance have revealed the energy landscape of each assembly pattern to support the self-sorting results. By applying this mechanism, the assembly yield of ABA trimers has been increased from 30%~40% under conventional conditions to 100% with self-sorting. Moreover, we have demonstrated rapid and spontaneous self-assembly of advanced chain-like structures with alternate surface chemistry.

Supramolecular Assemblies of A Semirigid Polyanion in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:In this article, we report the supramolecular assemblies of a semirigid polyelectrolyte, poly(2,2'-disulfonyl-4,4'-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT) in water. Cryo-TEM observation and SAXS measurement reveal that PBDT forms bundle-like structure even in very dilute concentration, C-p, of 0.02 wt %. These bundle-like assemblies serve as new primary building blocks and self-assemble further as C-p increases, to form large associations with or without long-range orientation. When 2 wt % < C-p < 6 wt %, liquid liquid phase separation occurs. Some of the supramolecular associations form bipolar liquid crystalline (LC) droplets via a typical nucleation and growth process. The droplets grow up by the coalescence of small ones and sediment under the gravity and coalesce to form a bottom nematic phase. When C-p 6 wt %, the solutions are in a uniform nematic phase. The existence of these preliminary supramolecular assemblies of PBDT in aqueous solutions should be crucial for the formation of nematic LC phase at a significantly low C-p, as well as the formation of macroscopic ordered structures in hydrogels via electrostatic interaction between PBDT and oppositely charge multivalent metallic ion or polycation.
Effect of chain conformational change on micelle structures: experimental studies and molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:The effect of chain conformation change on the self-assembly behavior of poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG-b-PEG) was studied both experimentally by transmission electron microscopy, laser light scattering, and circular dichroism and computationally using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It was found that, by introducing trifluoroacetic acid to the PBLG-b-PEG solution, the conformation of the PBLG chain transforms from a-helix to random coil, which results in a change of the micelle structures formed by PBLG-b-PEG from rod to sphere. Meanwhile, the MD simulations were performed by using Brownian dynamics on the self-assembly behavior of model AB-type diblock copolymers with various chain rigidities of the A-block. The results show that, by decreasing the fraction of rigid chain conformation of the A-block, which corresponds to the helix-coil transition in the PBLG-b-PEG sample, the aggregate structure transforms from rod to sphere. The MD simulations also provide chain packing information in the micelles. On the basis of both experimental and MD simulation results, the mechanism regarding the effect of the conformation change of the polypeptide block copolymer on its self-association behavior is suggested.

Abstract:Understanding the conformation of a polyelectrolyte (PE) is not only a fundamental challenge in polymer science but also critical for understanding the folding and aggregation of proteins. Here, we develop a theory by systematically including the electrostatic interactions into the self-consistent field theory for polymers to study the conformational behaviors of a single PE in poor solvents. As the backbone charge fraction of the PE increases, our theory predicts that the spherical globule (Sph) can either be elongated to a series of pearl-necklace (PN) structures or be flattened to two novel structures that have not been reported before: biconcave red cell and toroid. While the PN structures are stable conformations, the two fattened structures are metastable. We find that the cylindrical globule, the stability of which is under debate, is an unstable structure. The signature of the PN structures obtained by our calculation is less pronounced than that reported by other theoretical works due to the continuous change in the curvature from the pearl to the necklace, which, however, is in good agreement with the results from molecular simulations and neutron scattering experiments. In addition, our theory reveals different characteristics of the globule to PN transition: the transition from the Sph to the PN with double pearls is discontinuous, whereas those from adjacent PN structures are continuous at finite salt concentrations. Furthermore, we observe different scaling behaviors: the string width is not a constant as a thermal blob but decays as the backbone charge fraction increases.

Abstract:The aggregation behavior and solid-state microstructures of conjugated polymers play an important role in optoelectronic properties and device performances. Adaption of classical polymer theory and phenomenological discussion of the structure were commonly applied to unravel the nature of aggregation. However, the broadened molecular weight distribution and the discrepancy in interactions between polymer backbones and alkyl chains increase the difficulty in pinpointing the nature of the aggregation mechanism and behavior. Here, four conjugated polymers were developed to construct the relationship between the polymer conformation and the aggregation behavior. The effect of the interunit torsion and the flexibility differences of the conjugated chains on the aggregation behaviors in solutions was investigated in detail. On this basis, a model combined with supramolecular polymerization and classical polymer theory brought a new perspective of thermodynamics to unravel the aggregation process in solution. The aggregation equilibrium inclined toward short-range/long-range pi-stacks with planar/torsional units, and the disaggregated species inclined toward dispersed chains/coils with a rigid/flexible backbone. Furthermore, the aggregation structures were inherited to the solid phase, resulting in excellent electronic properties for the planar and rigid polymers and strong domain-regulation ability for the torsional and flexible polymers. Our investigation pioneers the introduction of supramolecular aggregation theory into the study of the aggregation behavior of conjugated polymers in solution, which sheds light on the nature of the aggregation of conjugated polymers from a thermodynamic perspective, constructs a landscape for the aggregation process, and also provides guidance for the structure design and the selection of modulation methods matching the structure and performance requirements.

Abstract:The self-assembled nanostructures of a high-molecular-weight rod-coil block copolymer, poly(styrene-block-(2,5-bis[4-methoxyphenyl]oxycarbonyl)styrene) (PS-b-PMPCS), in p-xylene are studied. The cylindrical micelles, long segmental cylindrical micelle associates, spherical micelles, and spherical micelle associates are observed with increased copolymer concentration. The high molecular weight of PS leads to the entanglement between PS chains from different micelles, which is the force for supramolecular interactions. Short cylindrical micelles are connected end-to-end via this supramolecular chemistry to form long segmental cylindrical micelle associates, analogue to the condensation polymerization process, with direction and saturation. On the other hand, spherical micelles assemble via supramolecular chemistry to form spherical micelle associates, yet without any direction due to their isotropic properties.
Self-Assembly of Star-Polyelectrolytes in Various Solution Conditions

Abstract:The topological complexity of star-polyelectrolytes provides a larger probability for controlling self-assembly behaviors in solution to obtain plentiful morphologies. Therefore, we study the charge-driven self-assembly of oppositely charged star-polyelectrolytes with different arm numbers in solution with various ionic strengths and temperatures by performing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Morphological phase diagrams are constructed, and a rich variety of morphological structures are obtained with a sequence of unimolecular micelle, loose aggregate, amorphous aggregate, and cross-linked structure as the solution ionic strength decreases. The structural transitions of self-assembly depend on both the strength of electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged groups and long-range repulsion between the same charged groups, which increases the energy barriers for further aggregation. The competition of various interactions results in the alternating connection of polycations and polyanions. The tendency of the transition is also exhibited by increasing the arm numbers or lowering the temperatures, which increase the local charge density and reduce the thermal fluctuation, respectively. The potential of mean force analyses reveals that the complexation thermodynamics and structural transitions between opposite star-polyelectrolyte depend mainly on ionic strength. The formation pathways of amorphous and cross-linked aggregates show similar initial short worm-like structures with some cross-links; then, the different pathways are observed due to multiple free energy minima for the association of the worm-like structures. The simulation results may help to understand the self-assembly mechanism of star-polyelectrolytes in various conditions and provide useful references for fabricating target aggregate morphologies in potential applications.

Abstract:The molecular design of peptide-assembled nanostructures relies on extensive knowledge pertaining to the relationship between conformational features of peptide constituents and their behavior regarding self-assembly, and characterizing the conformational details of peptides during their self-assembly is experimentally challenging. Here, we demonstrate that a hybrid-resolution modeling method can be employed to investigate the role that conformation plays during the assembly of terminally capped diphenylalanines (FF) through microsecond simulations of hundreds or thousands of peptides. Our simulations discovered tubular or vesicular nanostructures that were consistent with experimental observation while reproducing critical self-assembly concentration and secondary structure contents in the assemblies that were measured in our experiments. The atomic details provided by our method allowed us to uncover diverse FF conformations and conformation dependence of assembled nanostructures. We found that the assembled morphologies and the molecular packing of FFs in the observed assemblies are linked closely with side-chain angle and peptide bond orientation, respectively. Of various conformations accessible to soluble FFs, only a select few are compatible with the assembled morphologies in water. A conformation resembling a FF crystal, in particular, became predominant due to its ability to permit highly ordered and energetically favorable FF packing in aqueous assemblies. Strikingly, several conformations incompatible with the assemblies arose transiently as intermediates, facilitating key steps of the assembly process. The molecular rationale behind the role of these intermediate conformations were further explained. Collectively, the structural details reported here advance the understanding of the FF self-assembly mechanism, and our method shows promise for studying peptide-assembled nanostructures and their rational design.

Abstract:We investigate the solution self-assembly of a mixture of positively charged homopolymers and AB diblock copolymers, in which the A blocks are negatively charged, and the B blocks are neutral. The electrostatic complexation between oppositely charged polymers drives the formation of many ordered phases. The microstructures and phase diagrams are calculated using self-consistent field theory (SCFT) based on an ion-pair model with an equilibrium constant K to characterize the strength of binding between positively and negatively charged monomers. The effects of the charge ratio, representing the ratio of charges from the homopolymer over all charges from polymers in the system, on the ordered structure are systematically studied, both for hydrophobic and hydrophilic A blocks. The charge ratio plays an important role in determining the phase boundaries in the phase diagram of salt concentration versus polymer concentration. We also provide information about the varying tendency of the domain spacing and core size of the spherical phase when the charge ratio is changed, and the results are in good agreement with experiments. These studies provide a deep understanding of the self-assembled microstructures of oppositely charged diblock copolymer-homopolymer systems.
Visualizing the multi-level assembly structures of conjugated molecular systems with chain-length dependent behavior

Abstract:Abstract It remains challenging to understand the structural evolution of conjugated polymers from single chains to solvated aggregates and film microstructures, although it underpins the performance of optoelectrical devices fabricated via the mainstream solution processing method. With several ensemble visual measurements, here we unravel the morphological evolution process of a model system of isoindigo-based conjugated molecules, including the hidden molecular assembly pathways, the mesoscale network formation, and their unorthodox chain dependence. Short chains show rigid chain conformations forming discrete aggregates in solution, which further grow to form a highly ordered film that exhibits poor electrical performance. In contrast, long chains exhibit flexible chain conformations, creating interlinked aggregates networks in solution, which are directly imprinted into films, forming interconnective solid-state microstructure with excellent electrical performance. Visualizing multi-level assembly structures of conjugated molecules provides a deep understanding of the inheritance of assemblies from solution to solid-state, accelerating the optimization of device fabrication.

Construction of Supramolecular Assemblies from Self-Organization of Amphiphilic Molecular Isomers.

Abstract:Amphiphilic coil-rod-coil molecules, incorporating flexible and rigid blocks, have a strong affinity to self-organize into various supramolecular aggregates in bulk and in aqueous solutions. In this paper, we report the self-assembling behavior of amphiphilic coil-rod-coil molecular isomers. These molecules consist of biphenyl and phenyl units connected by ether bonds as the rod segment, and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a degree of polymerization of 7 and 12 as the flexible chains. Their aggregation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermal optical polarized microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results imply that the molecular structure of the rod building block and the length of the PEO chains dramatically influence the creation of supramolecular aggregates in bulk and in aqueous solutions. In the bulk state, these molecules self-organize into a hexagonal perforated lamellar and an oblique columnar structure, respectively, depending on the sequence of the rod building block. In aqueous solution, the molecule with a linear rod segment self-assembles into sheet-like nanoribbons. In contrast, its isomer, with a rod building block substituted at the meta-position of the aryl group, self-organizes into nanofibers. This is achieved through the control of the non-covalent interactions of the rod building blocks.

Abstract:The mesomorphic behaviors of two rod-coil molecules containing poly(ethylene oxide)s with degree of polymerization of 12 (12-4) and 16 (16-4) and their complexes with LiCF3SO3 are discussed. Both rod-coil molecules discussed in this paper exhibits a microphase separated lamellar crystalline phase as well as a layered smectic mesophase. The complexation with LiCF3SO3 induced a cylindrical micellar mesophase from a smectic phase of uncomplexed molecule. These results characterized by a combination of techniques by DSC, optical polarized microscopy and X-ray scattering experiments are discussed in terms of the change of the relative volume fraction of coil to rod segments through complexation with LiCF3SO3.
Complexation between Oppositely Charged Polyelectrolytes in Dilute Solution: Effects of Charge Asymmetry

Abstract:We use dissipative particle dynamics to study polyelectrolyte complexation in dilute solutions under conditions of either chain-length or concentration asymmetry between the polycation and the polyanion, characterized by the macromolecular charge ratio of the minor component to the major component. Our results show that generally the systems form clusters carrying net macromolecular charges. The stoichiometry of these net-charged macromolecular clusters depends on the overall charge asymmetry, and clusters with certain stoichiometry can dominate the cluster population under a wide range of chain-length and concentration asymmetry. The morphology and stability of these net-charged clusters are closely related to their stoichiometry. When the charge ratio reaches a threshold value, the polyions condense into a single large coacervate cluster, signaling the onset of macroscopic coacervation. The threshold value is less for concentration asymmetry systems than for chain-length asymmetry systems at the same salt concentration. This threshold value decreases with added salt, as salt ions cause merging of small clusters into larger ones, eventually leading to the dominance of a single large cluster. This “salting-out” phenomenon is followed by a “salting-in” behavior, as further addition of salt dissolves the large cluster. The preferred size and composition of the net-charged clusters observed in the simulation highlight the significant role of length and concentration asymmetry on polyelectrolyte complex coacervation and hint at the possibility of a microstructured liquid.

Abstract:Semiconducting polymers are a versatile class of materials that are used in many (opto)electronic applications, including organic photovoltaics. However, they are inherently disordered and suffer from poor conductivities due to bends and kinks in the polymer chains along the conjugated backbone, as well as disorder at grain boundaries. In an effort to reduce polymer disorder, we developed a method to straighten polymer chains by creating amphiphilic conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) that self-assemble in water into worm-like micelles. The present work refines our design rules for self-assembly of CPEs. We present the synthesis and characterization of a straight, micelle-forming polymer, a derivative of poly(cyclopentadithiophene-alt-thiophene) (PCT) bearing two ammonium-charged groups per cyclopentadithiophene unit. Solution-phase self-assembly of PCT into micelles is observed by both small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), while detailed SAXS fitting allows for characterization of intra-micellar interactions and inter-micelle aggregation. We find that PCT displays significant chain straightening thanks to the lack of steric hindrance between its alternating cyclopentadithiophene and thiophene subunits, which increases the propensity for the polymer to self-assemble into straight rod-like micelles. This work extends the availability of micelle-forming semiconducting polymers and points to further enhancements that can be made to obtain homogeneous nanostructured polymer assemblies based on cylindrical micelles.

Abstract:Self-assembly of matter in solution generally relies on attractive interactions that overcome entropy and drive the formation of higher-order molecular and particulate structures. Such interactions play key roles in a variety of contexts, e.g., crystallisation, biomolecular folding and condensation, pathological protein aggregation, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. The electrosolvation force entails a new conceptual paradigm in the known palette of interactions that drive the spontaneous accretion and organisation of matter. However, an understanding of the underlying physical chemistry, and therefore the ability to exert control over and tune the interaction, remains incomplete. Here we demonstrate that this force arises from the structure of the interfacial electrolyte. Neutral molecules such as a different solvent, osmolytes or surfactants, can - even at very low concentrations in the medium - disrupt or reinforce pre-existing interfacial solvent structure, thereby furnishing unanticipated chemical tuning of the ability of matter to self-assemble. The observations further present unexpected mechanistic elements that may explain the impact of co-solvents and osmolytes on protein structure, stability and pathological protein condensation. Our findings shed new light on microscopic mechanisms that drive the emergence of order and structure from molecular to macroscopic scales in the solution phase.
