Abstract:A large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been achieved in a rare-earth-free CoMnSb alloy at low magnetic field and intermediate temperature. It is interesting to note that a relatively large magnetic entropy change ∣ΔSM∣ of 2.06J∕kgK with ΔH=0.9T was obtained around 471K. Arrott plots at various temperatures reveal that a second order magnetic transformation occurs near the Curie temperature. The origin of the large ΔSM under the conditions of intermediate temperature and low field is attributed to the magnetic transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. These results suggest that CoMnSb alloy is a good candidate for large MCE when being utilized in intermediate temperature refrigeration systems for some special cases. This investigation demonstrates that some transition metal alloys with large magnetic moments may exhibit large MCE, which extends the region for exploring useful MCE materials.

Abstract:The magnetocaloric effect of Ni43Mn46-xVxSn11 (x = 0.00, 0.75, 1.25, 1.50) alloys has been investigated. It is revealed that partial substitution of V for Mn dramatically enhances themagnetic entropy change from 15.4 J/kg. K for x = 0 to 36.1 J/kg.K for x = 1.25 under a magnetic field of 3 T. A large refrigeration capacity up to 164.2 J/kg for x = 1.50 indicates that the V-doped Ni43Mn46Sn11 alloys are promising candidates for the application in magnetic refrigeration. The origin of large magnetic entropy change and the variation of phase transformation temperature were discussed in terms of electron density.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of controlling the magnetic phase transition of the heterointerface between a half-doped manganite La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and a multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) through magnetoelectric coupling. Using macroscopic magnetometry and element-selective x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Fe L edges, we discover that the ferroelectric polarization of BFO controls simultaneously the magnetization of BFO and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO). X-ray absorption spectra at the oxygen K edge and linear dichroism at the Mn L edge suggest that the interfacial coupling is mainly derived from the superexchange between Mn and Fe t(2g) spins. The combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and mean-field theory calculations reveals that the d-electron modulation of Mn cations changes the magnetic coupling in LCMO, which controls the enhanced canted moments of interfacial BFO via the interfacial coupling. Our results demonstrate that the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic instability can be modulated by an electric field at the heterointerface, providing another pathway for the electrical field control of magnetism.

Abstract:Manganites are an important class of materials that exhibit a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The large MCE is often accompanied by complex magnetic phase transitions associated with electronic phase separation (EPS) in manganites. In previous studies, the effect of EPS on MCE has been examined in chemically synthesized manganite nanoparticles, in which the EPS vanishes when the particle size is smaller than a few tens of nanometers. However, the surface area to volume ratio is high in these small nanoparticles and surface spin disordering can lead to controversial results for MCE measurements. In this study, we used La0.425Pr0.2Ca0.375MnO3 nanodisk arrays fabricated from epitaxially grown thin films as model systems to investigate how MCE changes during a clean transition from the EPS state in thin film and 2-mu m-sized disk arrays to a single ferromagnetic state in 500-nm-sized disk arrays. The MCE of the 500-nm-sized disk array is almost twice that of its parent film. Our results present an approach to improve the MCE in manganite systems for future magnetic refrigeration applications.

Abstract:Mesocrystal, a new class of crystals as compared to conventional and well-known single crystals and polycrystalline systems, has captured significant attention in the past decade. Recent studies have been focused on the advance of synthesis mechanisms as well as the potential on device applications. In order to create further opportunities upon functional mesocrystals, we fabricated a self-assembled nanocomposite composed of magnetic CoFe2O4 mesocrystal in Sr-doped manganites. This combination exhibits intriguing structural and magnetic tunabilities. Furthermore, the antiferromagnetic coupling of the mesocrystal and matrix has induced an additional magnetic perturbation to spin-polarized electrons, resulting in a significantly enhanced magnetoresistance in the nanocomposite. Our work demonstrates a new thought toward the enhancement of intrinsic functionalities assisted by mesocrystals and advanced design of novel mesocrystal-embedded nanocomposites.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is conceived as a promising alternative to the conventional gas compression/expansion technique. For potential applications, the magnetic refrigerants exhibiting high-performance at low field are in great need. In this work, we present large MCE obtained in a directionally solidified polycrystalline Ni50Mn18Cu7Ga25 alloy with the co-occurrence of magnetic transition and martensitic transformation. Such a strong magneto-structural coupling yields large magnetic entropy change of -12.8 Jkg(-1)K(-1) and adiabatic temperature variation of 1.6 K at an external magnetic field change of 1.5 T. It is demonstrated that the fabrication of Ni-Mn-Ga based alloys through composition tuning and directional solidification could be an economical processing route to improve magnetocaloric properties.

Abstract:The metamagnetic transition, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance effects are investigated in polycrystalline Sm0.55(Sr0.5Ca0.5)0.45MnO3 (SSCMO) manganite. A sharp magnetization jump at Curie temperature (TC) 73.5K with large thermal hysteresis is observed. Magnetic measurements and Arrott plots analysis indicate that the transition is first order in nature. Under a low magnetic field change of 1T, the magnetic entropy change exhibits a peak value of −ΔSMmax(T)=4.01J/kg K with relative cooling power (RCP) value of 44.1J/kg in the vicinity of TC. The mechanism of charge conduction in insulator phase is polaron transport. Large negative magnetoresistance ratio with value of ~99% is obtained within a broad temperature range below metal insulator transition temperature under 1T magnetic field. These results indicate the potential applications of SSCMO in magnetic refrigeration and spintronics devices.

Abstract:The nano-structuring engineering and the introduction of magnetic scattering are effective ways to enhance the thermoelectric performance. In this work, we use the magnetic treatments on La0.4Pr0.225Ca0.375MnO3 to demonstrate that the electronic phase engineering can enhance the thermoelectric performance by simultaneously reducing the thermal conductivity and raising the power factor in a strongly correlated electron system. This study indicates that the magnetic treatment changes the phase separation state and impedes the growth of ferromagnetic metal (FMM) phase. The reduction of FMM phase suppresses the bipolar effect, which raises the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor, reduces the thermal conductivity, and therefore enhances the thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Bilayer films of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 and La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 with different layer thicknesses and stacking sequences were synthesized via pulsed laser deposition. The magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects were systematically investigated. We found that the phase transition associated with the layers tends to merge together at an optimal thickness and a stacking sequence. The operating temperature span of the entropy change broadens at the expense of its magnitude, leading to an enhancement of the refrigerant capacity by over 40%. The optimized bilayer film possesses a refrigerant capacity of similar to 6.0 mml:mspace width=".1em/mml:mspace> J / kg, compared to a value of similar to 4.2 mml:mspace width=".1em"mml:mspace> J / kg for the single-phase films. The phase transition broadening induced by epitaxial strain is responsible for the enhanced window of operating temperature as well as refrigerant capacity. The design principle developed here may be applied to ferroelastic and ferroelectric materials to enhance elastocaloric and electrocaloric effects.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration, resulting from the magnetocaloric effect of a material around the magnetic phase-transition temperature, is a topic of great interest as it is considered to be an alternate energy solution to conventional vapor-compression refrigeration. The viability of a magnetic refrigeration system for magnetic cooling can be tested by exploiting materials in various forms, from bulk to nanostrucutres. In this study, magnetocaloric properties of self-assembled Mn3O4-La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 nanocomposites, with varying doping concentrations of Mn3O4 in the form of nanocrystals embedded in the La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 matrix, are investigated. The temperatures corresponding to the paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions are higher, and the values of change in magnetic entropy under a magnetic field of 2 T show an enhancement (highest being ∼130%) for the nanocomposites with low doping concentrations of Mn3O4, compared to that of pure La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 thin films. Relative cooling power remain close to those of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. The enhanced magnetic phase-transition temperature and magnetocaloric effect are interpreted and evidenced in the framework of interfacial coupling between Mn3O4 and La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. This work demonstrates the potentiality of self-assembled nanostructures for magnetic cooling near room temperature under low magnetic fields.
Spatial Confinement Tuning of Quenched Disorder Effects and Enhanced Magnetoresistance in Manganite Nanowires

Abstract:Complex oxides have rich functionalities and advantages for future technologies. In many systems, quenched disorder often holds the key to determine their physical properties, and these properties can be further tuned by chemical doping. However, understanding the role of quenched disorder is complicated because chemical doping simultaneously alters other physical variables such as local lattice distortions and electronic and magnetic environments. Here, we show that spatial confinement is an effective approach to tuning the level of quenched disorder in a complex-oxide system while leaving other physical variables largely undisturbed. Through the confinement of a manganite system down to quasi-one-dimensional nanowires, we observed that the nature of its metal-insulator phase transition exhibits a crossover from a discontinuous to a continuous characteristic, in close accordance with quenched disorder theories. We argue that the quenched disorder, finite size, and surface effects all contribute to our experimental observations. Noticeably, with reduced nanowire width, the magnetoresistance shows substantial enhancement at low temperatures. Our findings offer new insight into experimentally tuning the quenched disorder effect to achieve novel functionalities at reduced dimensions.
On the magnetic-structure origin of giant magnetostrictive effect in MnCoSi-based metallic helimagnets

Abstract:Giant magnetostrictive effect, the huge volume and/or shape change of a material under an external magnetic field, is recently discovered in helimagnets with large magnetoelastic interactions. Here we revisit this effect in MnCoSi, a helical metamagnet with a unique Lifshitz tricritical point. By introducing minimal amount of Ni, the modified competing exchange interaction simultaneously lowers the tricritical temperature and even critical field of metamagnetism, leading to a giant, reversible, low-field magnetostrictive effect at ambient temperature. When applying a cyclic low field of 0.5 T, a giant reversible magnetostriction of 550 ppm can be achieved and maintained at 300 K. Interestingly, by advanced 3D-vector magnetic field measurement, a strong relation is found between magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the critical field of magnetostrictive effect. In-situ neutron powder diffraction results further reveal that the incommensurate helical antiferromagnetic structure with moment lying in ab plane transits into a ferromagnetic structure along b axis with increasing magnetic fields. During this metamagnetic transition, dramatical spin rotation triggers sharp anisotropic lattice change via strong magnetoelastic coupling, resulting in giant magnetostrictive effect. The saturated magnetostriction value is closely related with the amplitude of spin rotations. These findings not only design of a potential MnCoSi-based magnetostrictive material but also uncover the specific evolution of magnetic structures in the metamagnetic transition and the possible mechanism behind the macroscopic size change.

Abstract:By soft chemical processing several lanthanum manganite nano- and micron-sized granular composites have been fabricated,including μm/nm La2/3Sr1/3MnO\-3,CoFe\-2O\-4/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3,Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO\-3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO\-3 and La2/3Ca1/3MnO\-3/PPP(poly para-phenyl) combined systems.Enhancement in magnetoresistance is observed in all these composites.Different compounds embedded in the granular manganites result in different temperature ranges where the enhancement occurs.It is believed that the phenomenon is associated with tunneling between various of grains and spin-dependent scattering.

Abstract:Electric field control of dynamic spin interactions is promising to break through the limitation of the magnetostatic interaction based magnetoelectric (ME) effect. In this work, electric field control of the two-magnon scattering (TMS) effect excited by in-plane lattice rotation has been demonstrated in a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO)/Pb(Mn2/3Nb1/3)-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) (011) multiferroic heterostructure. Compared with the conventional strain-mediated ME effect, a giant enhancement of ME effect up to 950% at the TMS critical angle is precisely determined by angular resolution of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurement. Particularly, a large electric field modulation of magnetic anisotropy (464 Oe) and FMR line width (401 Oe) is achieved at 173 K. The electric-field-controllable TMS effect and its correlated ME effect have been explained by electric field modulation of the planar spin interactions triggered by spin-lattice coupling. The enhancement of the ME effect at various temperatures and spin dynamics control are promising paradigms for next-generation voltage-tunable spintronic devices.
In-plane ordered grain boundaries inducing enhanced magnetoresistance in epitaxial manganite films

Abstract:La 5/8Ca 3/8MnO 3 (LCMO) films with [1 1 0]-orientation were epitaxially grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia (1 1 1) [YSZ (1 1 1)] single crystal substrates. The results of X-ray diffractions confirmed that these LCMO/YSZ films show in-plane ordered grain boundaries, which are attributed to the symmetry mismatch between the films and the substrates. It is striking that the films exhibit large magnetoresistance (MR) over a broad temperature range due to the grain boundary effects. The similar feature was observed in polycrystalline manganites. However, it should be noted that our samples are epitaxial in nature. These results indicate that this approach is promising for the fabrication of large area MR devices with controlled grain boundaries. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect(MCE)is a novel refrigeration technology that will replace traditional vapor-compression refrigeration in the future.Improvement in the performance of MCE materials is crucial for the development of magnetic refrigeration technology.This study presents a new method that enhances the MCE performance of(Sc,Ti)Fe2 via magnetic phase separation.The max-imum magnetic entropy change induced by the coexistence of an in-plane ferromagnetic phase(FMab)and a canting antiferromagnetic phase(CAFM)in Sc0.3Ti0.7Fe2 is twice that found in other(Sc,Ti)Fe2 com-pounds.Variable-temperature neutron diffraction experiments directly reveal that the large magnetic en-tropy change in Sc0.3Ti0.7Fe2 is dominated by the transformation from a highly ordered FMab state to a CAFM state with a lower magnetic order.The magnetic phase separation is a direct transition from a higher-ordered state with a larger lattice to a lower-ordered state with a smaller lattice that induces a large magnetic order change and lattice contraction.The combination of the metamagnetic transition and negative thermal expansion leads to enhanced MCE.This study suggests the possibility that mag-netic phase separation can be an effective approach to achieving and controlling a large MCE in magnetic materials.

Abstract:Despite extensive research on manganites owing to their potential use in modern technologies, some aspects of their behaviour associated with changes in spin, valence, and charge states remain unclear. In this work, we investigated the structural, magneto-transport, and magnetocaloric properties of La0.8- x □ x Na0.2Mn1+ x O3-Δ manganite nanoparticles with strong spin-electron coupling. It was found that the perovskite structure contained different valence manganese ions, Mn B 3+, Mn B 4+, and Mn A 2+, even in the pristine compound. With an increase in x, increases in the Curie temperature T C, spontaneous magnetization, and magnetic entropy change ΔS M, as well as a decrease in the metal-semiconducting temperature T ms, were detected. The change in the spin value of Mn ions during the transition from ferromagnetic-metallic (μ FM exp < μ FM theor) to the paramagnetic-semiconducting (μ PM exp > μ PM theor) state owing to the localization–delocalization process of e g-electrons on the Mn sites was found to indicate spin-dependent magnetism. The complex critical behaviour is manifested near T C with a second-order phase transition. An additional influence of the super-paramagnetism of nanoparticles on the magnetocaloric effect was determined.

Abstract:Manipulating magnetic anisotropy in complex oxide heterostructures has attracted much attention. Here, three interface‐engineering approaches are applied to address two general issues with controlling magnetic anisotropy in the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 heterostructure. One is the paradox arising from the competition between Mn3d–O2p orbital hybridization and MnO6 crystal field. The other is the interfacial region where the nonuniform MnO bond length d and MnOMn bond angle θ disturb the structural modulation. When the interfacial region is suppressed in the interface‐engineered samples, the lateral magnetic anisotropy energy is increased eighteen times. The d‐mediated anisotropic crystal filed that overwhelms the orbital hybridization causes the lateral symmetry breaking of the Mn 3dx2−y2 orbital, resulting in enhanced magnetic anisotropy. This is different from the classic Jahn–Teller effect where the lateral symmetry is always preserved. Moreover, the quantitative analysis on X‐ray linear dichroism data suggests a direct correlation between Mn 3dx2−y2 orbital symmetry breaking and magnetic anisotropy energy. The findings not only advance the understanding of magnetic anisotropy in manganite heterostructures but also can be extended to other complex oxides and perovskite materials with correlated degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Nanoscale magnetism in oxides with the lateral size down to 300 nm is critical for scientific investigation and advanced technological applications such as spintronics, but often complicated to fabricate. Specifically, the emergent magnetic phenomena induced by the size effect attract tremendous attention. In this situation, fabrication of self-assembled nanoarchitectures in complex oxides and strategically modulating their properties are urgently needed. Here, we report the emerging single ferromagnetic phase state in self-assembled nanowires on the thin film surface of mixed valence manganite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3, by using low temperature magnetic force microscopy. The ferromagnetic state can be reversely switched in the presence of an external magnetic field. This work paves the way for manipulating the phase coexistence state without an external field and provides insight into the size limitation for designing next generation electronic and spintronic devices in complex oxide systems.

Abstract:We present resonant soft x-ray scattering results from small bandwidth manganites (Pr,Ca)MnO(3), which show that the CE-type spin ordering (SO) at the phase boundary is stabilized only below the canted antiferromagnetic transition temperature and enhanced by ferromagnetism in the macroscopically insulating state (FM-I). Our results reveal the fragility of the CE-type ordering that underpins the colossal magnetoresistance effect in this system, as well as an unexpected cooperative interplay between FM-I and CE-type SO which is in contrast to the competitive interplay between the ferromagnetic metallic state and CE-type ordering.
