Abstract:The emerging development of connected and automated vehicles imposes a significant challenge on current vehicle control and transportation systems. This paper proposes a novel unified approach, Parallel Driving, a cloud-based cyberphysical- social systems (CPSS) framework aiming at synergizing connected automated driving. This study first introduces the CPSS and ACP-based intelligent machine systems. Then the parallel driving is proposed in the cyber-physical-social space, considering interactions among vehicles, human drivers, and information. Within the framework, parallel testing, parallel learning and parallel reinforcement learning are developed and concisely reviewed. Development on intelligent horizon (iHorizon) and its applications are also presented towards parallel horizon. The proposed parallel driving offers an ample solution for achieving a smooth, safe and efficient cooperation among connected automated vehicles with different levels of automation in future road transportation systems.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed exciting developments in our transportation system with increasingly intelligent vehicles and infrastructure. The transportation system is envisioned to be highly heterogeneous, consisting of diverse participants with mixed intelligence and connectivity. Among them, autonomous vehicles have the highest intelligence and connectivity level and could contribute greatly to the operation of the transportation system in an efficient and reliable manner. However, the current design of autonomous driving techniques is mostly concerned with the autonomous vehicle at the individual level, and the overall transportation system does not provide proactive support to autonomous driving. In fact, the increasing intelligence and connectivity in transportation could be leveraged to significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of individual vehicles and the entire system. To facilitate this, vehicles need to interact and cooperate both among themselves and with the transportation infrastructure and management. In this article, we propose the societal intelligence (SI) framework. Different from the existing multientity intelligence frameworks, SI allows for much diverse interactions among the multiple entities at different levels and is thus suitable for transportation. In addition, we also render the driving process into four functional layers and demonstrate how the social intelligence framework can adapt to these layers, respectively.

Abstract:On June 11th, 2017, the 28th IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV'2017) was held in Redondo Beach, California, USA. As one of the 8 workshops at IV'2017, the cyber-physical-social systems (CPSS)-based parallel driving (WS'08), organized by the State Key Laboratory for Management and Control of Complex Systems (SKL-MCCS), Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, Tsinghua University, China, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, USA, and Cranfield University, U.K, has attracted both researchers and practitioners in intelligent vehicles. About 60-70 participants from various countries had extensive and deep discussions on definition, challenges and alternative solutions for CPSS-based parallel driving, and widely agreed that it is a novel paradigm of cloud-based automated driving technologies. Six speakers shared their ideas, studies, field applications, and vision for future along these emerging directions from software-defined vehicles to self-driving vehicles.

Abstract:Digital quadruplets aiming to improve road safety, traffic efficiency, and driving cooperation for future connected automated vehicles are proposed with the enlightenment of ACP-based parallel driving. The ACP method denotes artificial societies, computational experiments, and parallel execution modules for cyberphysical-social systems. Four agents are designed in the framework of digital quadruplets: descriptive vehicles, predictive vehicles, prescriptive vehicles, and real vehicles. The three virtual vehicles (descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive) dynamically interact with the real one to enhance the safety and performance of the real vehicle. The details of the three virtual vehicles in the digital quadruplets are described. Then, the interactions between the virtual and real vehicles are presented. The experimental results of the digital quadruplets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Abstract:The service life and service quality of transportation infrastructures are crucial for the regular function and public safety of transportation systems. Thus, the intelligent and accurate evaluation, prediction, and analysis of transportation infrastructure service conditions have always been hot topics for transportation engineers, where such problems are sometimes hard to be solved using traditional approaches, considering different factors including complex traffic conditions, severe environmental conditions, etc. In recent years, intelligent technologies, including advanced sensors, novel artificial intelligent approaches (deep learning, etc.), the IoT-based monitoring and analysis platform, auto piloting, green energy, synergistic technologies, and systems integrating both traffic and infrastructures monitoring, have emerged as powerful tools in transportation engineering area. These efforts have greatly advanced the service convenience of public transportation, prolonged the service life of transportation infrastructures, and improved the efficiency and safety of transportation systems.

Abstract:With the breakthroughs in deep learning, recent years have witnessed a booming of artificial intelligence applications and services designed for vehicles. More recently, with the proliferation of vehicular networks, edge computing, and digital twin, billions of vehicular end devices (e.g., autonomous vehicles, roadside equipments) with high level of intelligence are interconnected and are promoted into the cyberspace or digital twin. Driving by this trend, there is an urgent need to push individual vehicular intelligence to collective vehicular intelligence so as to fully unleash the potential of AI. The resulting new interdiscipline, the internet of vehicular intelligence (IoVI), is beginning to receive a tremendous amount of interest. However, research on IoVI is still in its infancy stage, and the architecture and key features of IoVI are highly desired. To this end, we held a Distributed/Decentralized Hybrid Workshop on Intelligent Vehicles for Social Transportation (DHW-IVST), and this letter summarizes the outcomes of our discussion. Here, we present an overview of the IoVI architectures, frameworks, and virtual vehicle that counts for the features and characteristics of both driver and vehicle in the digital twin.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed numerous technical breakthroughs in connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). On the one hand, these breakthroughs have significantly advanced the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs); on the other hand, these new traffic participants introduce more complex and uncertain elements to ITSs from the social space. Digital twins (DTs) provide real-time, data-driven, precise modeling for constructing the digital mapping of physical-world ITSs. Meanwhile, the metaverse integrates emerging technologies such as virtual reality/mixed reality, artificial intelligence, and DTs to model and explore how to realize improved sustainability, increased efficiency, and enhanced safety. More recently, as a leading effort toward general artificial intelligence, the concept of foundation model was proposed and has achieved significant success, showing great potential to lay the cornerstone for diverse artificial intelligence applications across different domains. In this article, we explore the big models embodied foundation intelligence for parallel driving in cyber-physical-social spaces, which integrate metaverse and DTs to construct a parallel training space for CAVs, and present a comprehensive elucidation of the crucial characteristics and operational mechanisms. Beyond providing the infrastructure and foundation intelligence of big models for parallel driving, this article also discusses future trends and potential research directions, and the "6S" goals of parallel driving.
