Abstract:The power load is a significant and important factor to the power system which can provide secure power supply and reliable power system. In this paper, we focus on the approximation and forecasting of the power load profiles based on the Gaussian mixture model. In order to infer the parameters of each component of GMM, we employ the joint maximum a posterior and maximum likelihood algorithm (JMAP-ML). Given the approximation of the power load, the Gaussian process regression method are utilized to forecast the power load in the time sequence. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can closely approximate the power load profiles and forecast the power load with lower errors.

Abstract:Load forecasting is a heated discussion point in power system, especially in the field of energy management. There are plenty of researches focusing on the improvement of forecasting algorithm. However, these algorithms are confronted with the computational burden caused by the complex forecasting verification process, as the traditional accuracy verification process is based on the stable relative error between forecasting data and history data. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a weather concerning load forecasting method combining with factor analysis feedback, tendency analysis feedback and multivariate nonlinear regression analysis algorithms. The proposed method can reduce the computational burden in forecasting. Tendency analysis about load indexes is demonstrated, and the relationship between weather and load indexes are evaluated by factor analysis. The forecasting equations are calculated by multivariate nonlinear regression analysis algorithm. We apply the variable relative error between the forecasting data and history data as the accuracy verification principle in forecasting verification process. The variable relative error can be calculated by the variable accuracy feedback of tendency analysis and factor analysis. Based on the proposed method, a more effective and convenient accuracy verification process is designed. Case studies are conducted to verify the proposed method.

Abstract:Load forecasting has long been recognized as an important building block for all utility operational planning efforts. Over the recent years, it has become ever more challenging to make accurate forecasts due to the proliferation of distributed energy resources, despite the abundance of existing load forecasting methods. In this paper, we identify one drawback suffered by most load forecasting methods: neglect to thoroughly address the impact of input errors on load forecasts. As a potential solution, we propose to incorporate input modeling and uncertainty quantification to improve load forecasting performance via a two-stage approach. The proposed two-stage approach has the following merits. (1) It provides input modeling and quantifies the impact of input errors, rather than neglecting or mitigating the impact, a prevalent practice of existing methods. (2) It propagates the impact of input errors into the ultimate point and interval predictions for the target customer's load to improve predictive performance. (3) A variance-based global sensitivity analysis method is further proposed for input-space dimensionality reduction in both stages to enhance the computational efficiency. Numerical experiments show that the proposed two-stage approach outperforms competing load forecasting methods in terms of both point predictive accuracy and coverage ability of the predictive intervals.

Abstract:To implement deterministic short-range numerical weather forecast error correction, this study develops a novel approach using the variational method and historical data. Based on time-dependency characteristic of nonsystematic forecast error, variational approach is adopted to establish the mapping relation between nonsystematic error series and the prior period nonsystematic error series, so as to estimate nonsystematic error in the future and revise the forecast under the premise of the revision for forecast systematic forecast error. According to the hindcast daily data of geopotential height on 500hPa generated by GRAPES model on January and July from 2002 to 2010, preliminary analysis is carried out on characteristics of forecast error in East Asia. Further estimation and forecast correction test are conducted for nonsystematic error. The result shows that the nonsystematic forecast error in the GRAPES model has obvious characteristic of state dependency. Nonsystematic forecast error changes along season and the state of weather and accounts for great proportion in total forecast error. Nonsystematic forecast error estimated by variational approach is relatively close to the real forecast error. After nonsystematic correction, the corrected 24h and 48h forecast of majority samples has a smaller RMSE. Further study on temperature shows a similar result, even comparing to the observational upper air MICAPS data.

Abstract:To tackle the challenges of high variability and low accuracy in short-term electricity load forecasting, this study introduces an enhanced prediction model that addresses overfitting issues by integrating an error-optimal weighting approach with an improved ensemble forecasting framework. The model employs a hybrid algorithm combining grey relational analysis and radial kernel principal component analysis to preprocess the multi-dimensional input data. It then leverages an ensemble of an optimized deep bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU), an enhanced long short-term memory (LSTM) network, and an advanced temporal convolutional neural network (TCN) to generate predictions. These predictions are refined using an error-optimal weighting scheme to yield the final forecasts. Furthermore, a Bayesian-optimized Bagging and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) ensemble model is applied to minimize prediction errors. Comparative analysis with existing forecasting models demonstrates superior performance, with an average absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 1.05% and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9878. These results not only validate the efficacy of our proposed strategy, but also highlight its potential to enhance the precision of short-term load forecasting, thereby contributing to the stability of power systems and supporting societal production needs.

Abstract:Short-term probabilistic wind power forecasting can provide critical quantified uncertainty information of wind generation for power system operation and control. It would be difficult to develop a universal forecasting model dominating over other alternative models because of the inherent stochastic nature of wind power. Therefore, a novel multi-model combination (MMC) approach for probabilistic wind power forecasting is proposed in this paper to exploit the advantages of different forecasting models. The proposed approach can combine different forecasting models those provide different kinds of probability density functions to improve the performance of probabilistic forecasting. Three probabilistic forecasting models based on the sparse Bayesian learning, kernel density estimation, and beta distribution fitting are used to form the combined model. The parameters of the MMC model are solved by two-step optimization. Comprehensive numerical studies illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed MMC approach.
