Abstract:For any subcritical index of regularity s > 3/2, we prove the almost global well posedness for the 2-dimensional semilinear wave equation with the cubic nonlinearity in the derivatives, when the initial data are small in the Sobolev space H s × H s−1 with certain angular regularity. The lifespan is known to be sharp in general. The main new ingredient in the proof is an endpoint version of the generalized Strichartz estimates in the space . In the last section, we also consider the general semilinear wave equations with the spatial dimension n ≥ 2 and the order of nonlinearity p ≥ 3.

Abstract:In this article, we study the existence of multiple solutions for the singular semilinear elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev-Hardy exponents -Δu-μu|x|2=α|u|2*(s)-2u|x|s+βα(x)|u|r-2u,x∈Rℕ. By means of the concentration-compactness principle and minimax methods, we obtain infinitely many solutions which tend to zero for suitable positive parameters α, β.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following semilinear elliptic equations of the formwhere ε is a small positive parameter, and where f and g denote superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity. Suppose that b(x) has at least one maximum. We prove that the system has a ground-state solution (ψε, φε) for all sufficiently small ε > 0. Moreover, we show that (ψε, φε) converges to the ground-state solution of the associated limit problem and concentrates to a maxima point of b(x) in certain sense, as ε → 0. Furthermore, we obtain sufficient conditions for nonexistence of ground-state solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an existence result for nonradial large solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation Delta u = p(x)f (u) in R-N (N >= 3), where f is assumed to satisfy (f(1)) and (f(2)) below. The asymptotic behavior of the large solutions at infinity are also studied in the sublineax case that f(u) behaves like u(gamma) at infinity for gamma is an element of (0, 1).

Abstract:The following semi-linear elliptic equations involving Hardy–Sobolev critical exponents −Δu−μux2=u2*s−2xsu+g(x,u),x∈Ω∖0,u=0,x∈∂Ω have been investigated, where Ω is an open-bounded domain in RNN≥3, with a smooth boundary ∂Ω, 0∈Ω,0≤μ<μ ̄:=N−222,0≤s<2, and 2*s=2N−s/N−2 is the Hardy–Sobolev critical exponent. This problem comes from the study of standing waves in the anisotropic Schrödinger equation; it is very important in the fields of hydrodynamics, glaciology, quantum field theory, and statistical mechanics. Under some deterministic conditions on g, by a detailed estimation of the extremum function and using mountain pass lemma with PSc conditions, we obtained that: (a) If μ≤μ ̄−1, and λ<λ1μ, then the above problem has at least a positive solution in H01Ω; (b) If μ ̄−1<μ<μ ̄,then when λ*μ<λ<λ1μ, the above problem has at least a positive solution in H01Ω; (c) if μ ̄−1<μ<μ ̄ and Ω=B(0,R), then the above problem has no positive solution for λ≤λ*μ. These results are extensions of E. Jannelli's research (g(x,u)=λu).

Sharp Global Existence for Semilinear Wave Equation with Small Data

Abstract:By using the Strichartz esitmate and Picard iteration, we prove the subcritical(critical in some cases) global solution in $C_t H_x^s\cap C_t^1 H^{s-1}_x$ with small data for semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity of type $(\partial u)^k$($k\ge 1+\frac{4}{n-1}\vee 2$ and $(n,k)\neq (3,3)$). For $(n,k)=(3,3)$, we get the almost global existence. In addition, we give the global existence with radial data when $k> 1+\frac{2}{n-1}\vee 2$.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:We consider the elliptic problem $$ -\Delta u-\lambda u=a(x) g(u), $$ with $a(x)$ sign-changing and $g(u)$ behaving like $u^p$, $p> 1$. Under suitable conditions on $g(u)$ and $a(x)$, we extend the multiplicity, existence and nonexistence results known to hold for this equation on a bounded domain (with standard homogeneous boundary conditions) to the case that the bounded domain is replaced by the entire space $\mathbb R^N$. More precisely, we show that there exists $\Lambda> 0$ such that this equation on $\mathbb R^N$ has no positive solution for $\lambda> \Lambda$, at least two positive solutions for $\lambda\in (0,\Lambda)$, and at least one positive solution for $\lambda\in (-\infty,0]\cup\{\Lambda\}$. Our approach is based on some descriptions of mountain pass solutions of semilinear elliptic problems on bounded domains obtained by a special version of the mountain pass theorem. These results are of independent interests.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the semilinear elliptic problem Δu=a(x)f(u), u⩾0 in Ω, with the boundary blow-up condition u|∂Ω=+∞, where Ω is a bounded domain in RN (N⩾2), a(x)∈C(Ω) may blow up on ∂Ω and f is assumed to satisfy (f1) and (f2) below which include the sublinear case f(u)=um, m∈(0,1). For the radial case that Ω=B (the unit ball) and a(x) is radial, we show that a solution exists if and only if ∫01(1−r)a(r)dr=+∞. For Ω a general domain, we obtain an optimal nonexistence result. The existence for nonradial solutions is also studied by using sub-supersolution method.

Abstract:We prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to the problem $-\Delta u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N_+ := \{(x',x_N)\in\mathbb{R}^N \mid x_N>0 \}$ under zero Dirichlet boundary condition with a possible singular nonlinearity $f$. In some situations, we can derive a precise estimate on the blow-up rate of $\frac{\partial u}{\partial\eta}$ as $x_N \to 0^+$, where $(\eta,e_N)>0$, and obtain a classification result. The main tools we use are the method of moving planes and the sliding method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following critical quasilinear problems in RN: −∑i,j=1NDj(bij(v)Div)+12∑i,j=1Nbij′(v)DivDjv+a(x)v=μ|v|qs−2v+|v|2*s−2v,inRN,v(x)→0 as|x| →∞, where N ≥ 4, bij(v) ∼ 1 + |v|2s−2, s ≥ 1, μ > 0 is a constant, q < 2*, 2*=2NN−2 is the Sobolev critical exponent for the embedding of H1(RN) into Lp(RN), and a(x) is a potential function which is finite and positive and satisfies some decay assumptions. We first use the truncation to overcome the difficulties caused by both the unbounded domain and the critical exponents. Then we perform a change of variables to overcome the difficulty caused by the unboundness of bij. Finally a regularization approach combined with a compact argument helps us to prove the existence of infinitely many solutions.

Abstract:This paper concerns positive solutions to the boundary value problems of the scalar field equation in the half space with a Sobolev supercritical nonlinearity and an inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, admitting a nontrivial nonnegative Radon measure as the boundary data. Under a suitable integrability assumption on the boundary data and the Joseph–Lundgren subcritical condition on the nonlinear term, we give a complete classification of the existence/nonexistence of a positive solution with respect to the size of the boundary data. Furthermore, we give a result on the existence of multiple positive solutions via bifurcation theory.

Abstract:We study the existence of infinitely many solutions for the following quasilinear elliptic equations with critical growth: where b_ij∈ C^1(ℝ,ℝ) satisfies the growth condition |b_ij(t)|∼ |t|^2s-2 at infinity, s≥ 1 , Ω⊂ℝ^N is an open bounded domain with smooth boundary, a is a constant. Here we use the notations: D_i=∂/∂ x_i, b'_ij(t)=db_ij(t)/dt. We will study the effect of the terms a|v|^2s-2v and b_ij(v) on the existence of an unbounded sequence of solutions for (P). Here, we do not assume the crucial global monotone condition. We overcome the difficulties caused by the lack of such monotone condition by performing various kinds of changes of variables.
