Abstract:Two bis(tridentate) Schiff base ligands H2L(x) were used to construct three 2×2 grid-type tetranuclear Fe(II) complexes 1-3 to obtain polynuclear spin-crossover materials. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the spin states of the complexes are related to the substituents of H2L(x), and that spin transition occurs only in complexes 1 and 2, which are derived from a bulky ligand, whereas complex 3 is diamagnetic. The transition temperatures of complexes 1 and 2 are close to room temperature and are dependent on counteranions. The spin transition of complex 1 can be reversibly tuned by the dehydration and hydration process.

Abstract:We present the synthesis of two new novel tetradentate ligands based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 2-(2-pyridyl)-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L TetraPy-ODA ) and 2-phenyl-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L TetraPh-ODA ). The ligands were used to prepare six mononuclear complexes [Fe II (L TetraPy-ODA )(NCE)] (C1-C3) and [Fe II (L TetraPh-ODA )(NCE)] ( C4-C6 ) where E = S, Se or BH 3 . In addition, the ligand L TetraPy-ODA was employed in the synthesis of a new di-nuclear complex [Fe 2 II (L TetraPh )](ClO 4 )4·1 CH 3 NO 2 ·1.5 H 2 O ( C7 ). Characterization of all complexes was carried out using single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, performed in the temperature range of 2-300 K using a SQUID magnetometer, revealed spin crossover behaviour exclusively in the mononuclear complexes C3 and C6 , in which two monodentate NCBH 3 co-ligands coordinate. The presence of the lattice solvent was found to be crucial to the spin transition property, with complex C3 exhibiting a switching temperature (T 1/2 ) of approximately 165 K and C6 approximately 194 K. The other four mononuclear complexes C1, C2, C4, C5 , as well as the dinuclear complex C7 are locked in the high spin state over the measured temperature range. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed on complexes C1-C6 to rationalise the observed magnetic behaviour, demonstrating the significant effect of the NCS, NCSe and NCBH 3 co-ligands ligands on the spin-crossover behaviour of the [Fe II (L)(NCE)] complexes.

Abstract:Two mononuclear spin-crossover compounds Fe(L-1)(2) (1) and Fe(L-2)(2) (2) {HL1 = 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-N'-[1-(pyridine-2-yl)-butylidene]benzohydrazide, HL2 = 2-hydroxy-N'-[1-(pyridine-2-yl)butylidene]benzohydrazide} were successfully synthesized. The magnetic measurements of the compounds revealed different thermal magnetic behavior. Compound 1 undergoes a gradual complete thermal spin crossover (SCO) with T-1/2 up arrow/down arrow = 243/240 K and a hysteresis loop of 3 K. Compound 2 shows a gradual incomplete SCO during the measurable temperature region with T-1/2 approximate to 330 K. Through the comparison of the magnetic and structural results for 1 and 2 with previously reported related compounds, the alkyl substitutions of the ligand were considered to affect the ligand-field strength and hydrogen-bonding interactions. In addition, photomagnetism results showed an 87 % photoconversion and 36 K of T(LIESST) (LIESST = light-induced excited spin-state trapping) for compound 1. The results enrich the knowledge on how to control the spin-crossover behavior in the new system.

Abstract:Two mononuclear isomorphous complexes Fe(L1)(2)(SCN)(2) (1) and Fe(L2)(2)(SCN)(2) (2) [L1 = 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline; L2 = 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-imidazo [4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline] were obtained based on 1,10-plienanthroline derivatives. Abstract:A dinuclear Fe(II) compound has been prepared through the reaction of 2,5-dichloride-4-phenylimino-1,2,4-triazole (L) with Fe(BF4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, with the formula [Fe-2(L)(5)(SCN)(4)](H2O) (1). X-ray, magnetic, and Fe-57 Mossbauer characterizations showed that compound 1 exhibited a spin crossover (SCO) behavior with T-1/2 = 150 K. The study shows that introducing chloride groups on the ligand exerts a positive effect on increasing T-1/2 and making SCO more complete. A LIESST effect was also observed for 1 through a light irradiation experiment.

Abstract:Abstract Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool to determine the chemical structure of materials. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require complicated structural analysis. Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with ESR has been proven as a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here, we extend this technique to demonstrate ESR on single organic molecules - iron phthalocyanine (FePc) - and investigate the magnetic interactions between a molecular spin and either another molecular or atomic spin. We show that the molecular spin density is not only localized at the central Fe atom, but also distributed to the outer ligands, yielding a strongly anisotropic exchange coupling. Our work opens the door for using molecules in nanoscale ESR studies and promises tuning magnetic interactions between non-localized spins via tailoring ligand field symmetry and strength.

Abstract:The Fe-based spin-crossover (SCO) complexes, especially the ligand-driven light-induced spin-change (LD-LISC) systems with high spin-transition temperature, are considered as the most promising building blocks for designing molecular spintronic devices due to their bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. Here, we explore the transport properties of Fe(stpy)(4)(NCS)(2) LD-LISC SCO complexes with the trans and cis configurations sandwiched between Au electrodes by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function method. As for the trans configuration, the current through the molecular junction with the HS state is significantly larger than that of the LS state, which indicates that this Fe-based LD-LISC SCO complex with the trans configuration could act as a molecular switch when the spin transition is triggered by external stimuli. Remarkably, we observe the nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and obvious negative differential resistance feature in the Fe(stpy)(4)(NCX)(2) junctions with the trans and cis configurations, which is attributed by the dramatically different electronic structures of two spin channels and the bias-dependent transmission spectra, respectively. These obtained theoretical findings suggest that the examined Fe-based LD-LISC SCO complexes hold great potential in molecular spintronics.

Abstract:A solid solution of Fe(III) molecular species enables the precise adjustment of the spin transition temperature within a 45 K range and the OFF/ON switching of spin crossover. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the solid‐packing‐induced molecular distortion hinders spin crossover, whereas the loosely flexible packing brought about by chemical doping with fluorinated ligands triggers spin crossover. Comprehensive Summary Spin crossover (SCO), characterized by distinct high‐spin (HS) and low‐spin (LS) states, has potential applications in memory, electronic, and electroluminescent devices. The OFF/ON switching of SCO is crucial for obtaining bistable magnetic properties. However, there are few strategies for achieving this switching. Herein, based on a ligand chemical doping strategy, we report an Fe(III) solid solution that can be prepared using a ligand chemical doping strategy, enabling not only the OFF/ON switching of SCO but also the fine‐tuning of the spin transition temperature (Tc) within a 45 K range near room temperature. The experimental results show that when the polar ligand doping ratio reaches 20%, SCO behavior is triggered, and the crystal phase transforms significantly, becoming loose and flexible. Furthermore, Tc can be continuously regulated as the ligand‐doping ratio increases. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that solid packing‐induced molecular distortion blocks SCO, whereas loosely flexible packing triggers SCO via fluorinated ligand chemical doping.

Abstract:In 2019, our groups described a unique FeII complex, [Fe(2MeL)(NCBH3)2] (2MeL = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine) possessing a low-spin ground state that is not easily accessible due to the extremely slow dynamics of the high-spin to low-spin phase transition. Herein, we report the successful chemical manipulation of this spin-crossover (SCO) process through controlled metal-ion dilutions. The emergence or suppression of the thermally induced SCO behavior was observed depending on the radius of the metal ion used for the dilution (NiII or ZnII). Reversible photo-switching has been confirmed in all mixed-metal complexes whether the low-spin state is thermally accessible. Remarkably, the dilution with ZnII metal ions stabilizes HS FeII complexes with complete suppression of the thermally induced SCO process without destroying the reversible photoswitchability of the material.

Tuning Metal-Metal Interactions Through Reversible Ligand Folding in a Series of Dinuclear Iron Complexes

Abstract:A dinucleating macrocyclic ligand with two redox-active, pyridyldiimine components was shown to undergo reversible ligand folding to accommodate various substitution patterns, metal ion spin states, and degrees of Fe-Fe bonding within the cluster. An unfolded-ligand geometry with a rectangular Fe2(μ-Cl)2 core and an Fe-Fe distance of 3.3262(5) Å served as a direct precursor to two different folded-ligand complexes. Chemical reduction in the presence of PPh3 resulted in a diamagnetic, folded ligand complex with an Fe-Fe bonding interaction (dFe-Fe = 2.7096(17) Å) between two intermediate spin (SFe = 1) Fe(II) centers. Ligand folding was also induced through anion exchange on the unfolded-ligand species, producing a complex with three PhS- ligands and a temperature-dependent Fe-Fe distance. In this latter example, the weak ligand field of the thiolate ligands led to a product with weakly coupled, high-spin Fe(II) ions (SFe = 2; J = -50.1 cm-1) that form a bonding interaction in the ground state and a nonbonding interaction in the excited state(s), as determined by SQUID magnetometry and variable temperature crystallography. Finally, both folded-ligand complexes were shown to reform an unfolded-ligand geometry through convergent syntheses of a complex with an Fe-Fe bonded Fe2(μ-SPh)2 core (dFe-Fe = 2.7320(11) Å). Experimentally validated DFT calculations were used to investigate the electronic structures of all species as a way to understand the origin of Fe-Fe bonding interactions, the extent of ligand reduction, and the nature of the spin systems that result from multiple, weakly interacting spin centers.

Abstract:The research on electron transfer coupled spin transition regulating the valence state and spin state transition of metal ions is promising and challenging. Herein, we report a cyano-bridged {FeIII2FeII2} molecular square complex, {[Fe(Tp)(CN)3]2-[Fe(bnbpen)]2}(ClO4)2·8CH3OH (1·8CH3OH, bnbpen = N,N'-bis-(2-naphthylmethyl)-N,N'-bis(2-picolayl)-ethylenediamine), and its free of solvents form (1). Combined single-crystal X-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectra, magnetic measurements, and Mössbauer spectra reveal that 1·8CH3OH and 1 exhibit reversible one-step and two-step electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with temperature change, between the low-temperature state {FeII,LS(μ-CN)FeIII,LS}2 (LS = low spin, HS = high spin) and the high-temperature state {FeIII,LS(μ-CN)FeII,HS}2, respectively.

Abstract:We report the syntheses, characterisations, and spin-crossover behaviours of four mononuclear trans-[Fe(L1-L4)2(NCS)2] complexes (L = 4-(p-R1-phenyl)-3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole and 4-(p-methylphenyl)-3-(p-R2-phenyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole, (1) R1 = Cl (L1); (2) R1 = Me (L2); (3) R2 = MeO (L3); (4) R2 = F (L4)). The X-ray single crystal structural analysis reveals that 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic space group P1, whereas 3·0.5H2O and 4 crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, and all complexes possess a similar distorted [FeN6] octahedron with two trans-positions NCS(-) anions. Changing of the distal substituent on the phenyl ring of the triaryltriazoles causes differences in the crystal packing of the complexes that are key to their magnetic properties. Magnetic measurements indicate that 1 shows an abrupt transition with T(1/2) = 235 K, 2 displays a 3 K hysteresis loop with T(1/2)(↓) = 217 K and T(1/2)(↑) = 220 K, 3 exhibits a gradual spin transition with T(1/2) = 156 K and 4 undergoes an incomplete (70%) spin transition with T(1/2) = 97 K. The substituted group effects and intermolecular interactions appear to be critical to spin transition modes and temperature in this family.

Abstract:A new family of neutral mononuclear iron(II) spin crossover (SCO) compounds, Fe(L¹⁻⁶)₂ (L¹⁻⁶ = N'-((pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL¹), N'-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)-benzohydrazide (HL²), N'-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL³), 2-hydroxy-N'-((pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL⁴), 2-hydroxy-N'-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (HL⁵), 2-hydroxy-N'-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)benzohydrazide (HL⁶)) with N₄O₂ donor sets have been synthesized from series tridentate Schiff base ligands with N,N,O donor sets. The investigation of magnetic properties of these compounds reveal that in the measured temperature range, compound 1 is in the high-spin (HS) state, and compound 3 and 6 are mainly in the low-spin (LS) state, whereas the other compounds exhibit various SCO properties: compound 2 undergoes a gradual incomplete SCO with characteristic temperature T(1/2) higher than 350 K; compound 4 exhibits a special stepwise thermally induced SCO occurring at ~150 K (smooth) and 200 K (two-steps, with T(S1↑/↓) = 204/202 K and T(S2↑/↓) = 227/219 K) with a mixture of the HS and LS states yielded below 100 K; compound 5 shows a gradual and complete LS↔HS SCO with characteristic temperature T(1/2) = 273 K. All the three SCO compounds show the LIESST (light induced exited spin state trapping) effect with different levels of photoconversion. To thoroughly analyze these behaviours, Mössbauer spectra and DSC of 4 and 5, crystal structures of all the compounds at 290 K and 5 in the LS state at 110 K were carried out, which confirmed the structural changes accompanying the spin transition. In addition, alkyl substitution effect on the ligand field was suggested for this system.
Spin-Crossover and Coherent Transport Behaviors of a Six-Coordinate Iron(II) Complex with a N4O2 Donor Set

Abstract:Single-molecule spin-crossover (SCO) complexes have been considered to be the promising candidates to design molecular spintronic devices due to their magnetic bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. By performing extensive density functional theory calculations in combination with the nonequilibrium Green function method, we explore the SCO and coherent transport behaviors of a six-coordinate Fe(II) complex with a N4O2 donor set. The calculated relative total electronic energies imply that the spin transition between the HS and LS states can be achieved by external stimuli in experiments via changing the metal-ligand bond lengths. Based on the calculated transport results, we find that the current through the six-coordinate Fe(II) complex with the LS state sandwiched between gold electrodes is significantly less than that of the HS state due to their significantly different electronic structures. Moreover, the molecular junction with the HS state displays a robust spin-filtering effect, and the current under the small bias voltage is dominated by the spin-down electrons. Interestingly, we observe that the transport properties of this examined Fe(II) complex with the HS and LS states are not sensitive to the detailed anchoring configuration, which is highly desirable in molecular spintronics. These theoretical findings suggest this Fe(II) SCO complex holds great potential in molecular spintronic devices.
Substituent effects on spin-crossover Fe(II)N4O2 pyrenylhydrazone complexes

Abstract:Multifunctional magnetic materials have broad application prospects in molecular switches and information storage. In this study, four mononuclear Fe(II) complexes are synthesized using a series of pyrenylhydrazone ligands HL1-4. Two deprotonated ligands are coordinated to the iron(II) ions in an enolic form, leading to neutral complexes FeII(Lx)2·xsol with a FeIIN4O2 octahedral coordination environment. Magnetic measurements suggest that complex Fe(L1)2·2ACE (1·2ACE, ACE = acetone) is mainly low spin below 300 K and complex Fe(L3)2·ACE (3·ACE) is high spin, whereas complexes Fe(L2)2 (2) and Fe(L4)2·6H2O (4·6H2O) exhibit gradual spin crossover behavior. The spin states of complexes 1-4 are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The substituent effect on the magnetic properties of the complexes is significant in this system. Temperature-dependent fluorescence emission spectra show the coexistence but no coupling effect of spin crossover and fluorescence for complexes 2 and 4·6H2O.
